• Will Intel HD 3000 serve my needs, or should I opt for AMD Radeon 6650G?

  I am going to be purchasing a new laptop soon, and have several models in mind at the moment. The really difficult part has been trying to determine whether or not Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics will meet my needs/desires (Unity 3D, use of Netflix via a virtualbox installation of Windows 7, and possibly Compiz effects) or if I should opt for one of the models with a dedicated GPU. So basically, what are the capabilities of the Intel HD 3000, and are they up to snuff?

• Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  After I published part 1 of this series, the first external contribution (i.e., not by me) to the NetBeans plugin for Play Framework 2 was committed today. Yann D'Isanto added support for creating new Play projects: That completely solves a problem I was working on, in a different way altogether. I was working on creating a new wizard that would call "play new" on the command line and pass into the command line the entered name and application type (1 for Java and 2 for Scala). However, Yann's solution is better, at least in the sense in that it works, as opposed to mine which didn't, because of problems I continually had with the command line, since one needs to press Enter multiple times on the Play command line when creating new projects, which I wasn't able to simulate in my new wizard. Yann's approach is simply to follow the approach taken in the Project Type Module Tutorial, which explains how to register a project sample in the IDE. I was inspired by Yann's contribution, especially when he mentioned that one needs to build Play projects on the command line. So, I added a new menu item on the right-click of a project for building Play projects, which simply passes "play compile" to the command line for the current project: Via the IDE's main menu bar, you can also Build and Run the application, though the code for the Clean function needs to be added still, which would be a cool thing for anyone out there to add, by using all the existing code and then passing "play clean compile" to the command line. Something else that Yann added is an Options Window extension, thanks to the Options Window Module Tutorial, for registering the Play installation, which is a step forward from my hard coded solution. I changed things slightly so that, when Build or Run are selected, without a Play installation being defined, the Options window opens, displaying the tab that Yann created, shown below. Notice that there's no Browse button, which would be a simple next step for anyone else to contribute. A small tip is to use the FileChooserBuilder from the NetBeans IDE APIs when working on the Browse button: Looking forward to more contributions to the Play Framework 2 plugin for NetBeans IDE. • How do I get a TP-LINK WN723N wireless USB adapter working?

  I am having trouble using a TP-LINK WN723N wireless USB adapter on my computer which is running Ubuntu 12.04. When I plug the adapter in, the computer automatically picks up a signal from my wireless router but only connects to the internet for a short amount of time before losing the connection. I have searched for additional drivers and have tried running the .exe installation file on the WINE drive with no such luck... Am very new to Ubuntu would love some help! Thanks :-)

Am I doing something terribly wrong?

  there are obviously various 'canned' configuration options in oracle's weblogic server console for setting up data sources, jms queues, ldap servers etc, etc. What i want however is a way to configure other servers, mostly server urls, etc, in the console as well, and allow web applications running on the web server to access those configuration settings at runtime, probably through jndi names. Things like a document management server, a workflow server, etc. However I'm at a loss for how to configure custom jndi 'data sources' within wls' console. Is this possible?

However, I read in many places that Windows 8 causes many new problems with the installation through WUBI, and doesn't work on computers pre-installed with Windows 8 because of a problem in the BiOS or something of that sort. • Dual displays not working with Xinerama in Ubuntu 12.04

  I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04. I had been using a display configuration just like the one described at http://bitkickers.blogspot.com/2009/08/rotate-just-one-monitor-with.html without any problems under 10.10. I have an nvidia Quadro FX 380 and have upgraded to the latest drivers (295.49). Everything appears to be fine when the system first boots up. However, after logging in, the left screen goes black, and the right screen displays what should be displayed on the left screen. Logging into Ubuntu 2D somewhat improves things. The left screen correctly displays the left portion of the desktop but the right screen contains a duplicate view of the left screen. Turning off Xinerama and enabling TwinView appears to fix the issues but does not allow the right monitor to be rotated. Since the display problems start to occur only after logging on, I thought it might have to do with carryover user configuration from 10.10 but the problems persist even when logging in as a guest. Clicking on System Settings - Displays results in the error message "Could not get screen information - RANDR extension is not present." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I make my PHP development environment more efficient?

  I want to start a home-brew pet project in PHP. I've spent some time in my life developing in PHP and I've always felt it was hard to organize the development environment efficiently. In my previous PHP work, I've used a windows desktop machine and a linux server for development. This configuration had it's advantages: it's easy to configure Apache (and it's modules)/PHP/MySql on a linux box, and, at the time, this configuration was the same like on production server. However, I never successfully set up a debug connection between my Eclipse install and X-debug on server. Transferring files from my local workspace to the server was also very annoying (either ftp or Bazaar script moving files from repository to web root). For my new setup, I'm considering installing everything on my local machine. I'm afraid that it will slow down workstation performance (LAMP + Eclipse), and that compatibility problems will kick-in. What would you recommend? Should I develop using two separate machines? On one? Do you have experience using one of above configurations in your work?

My question is, if I choose to let Wubi install Ubuntu on my D: drive (HDD), thus creating the root.disk-file on D:, would I need to worry about TRIM in any way?
