• Win 2008 single server development environment (architecture)

  I have a few questions about a test development environment that I’m setting up on this server: Intel Core i7-920 Quadcode incl. Hyper Threading 8 GB DDR3 RAM 2x 750 GB SATA-II (probably software RAID 1) The server is going to support max 5 users, maybe 10 when stressed. I was hoping that I could run all the following products on the same server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ IIS SQL Server 2008 x64 (R2 when released) Team Foundation Server 2010 Sharepoint Foundation 2010 I know this sounds overkill, but remember that this is for development purpose and testing. This is not a production environment. My question if this will be possible at all? Should I run it all on one Windows 2008 installation, or should I run it in multiple virtual environments using Hyper-V? What do you think?

• Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM [closed]

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   Hi, I want to expose my sql server instance via the internet. I've been programming asp.net to sql server for a long time, but for the first time i'm hosting the sql server myself instead of the clients server. So what i want to do is move my sql server from my dev machine at home to a virtual server (yet to hire). But of course i don't want anyone to just enter my sql server but just a few persons. So what i was thinking was to allow only a few ip addresses to the sql server instance. Can anyone tell me how i can expose my sql server to the internet and limit the access to the instance to only a few ip addresses? And ehm, if you know even better ways to secure it, i'd be happy, because this is the first time for me :) Michel

• Apache2 conditional section based on port

  I don't know much about if statements in apache configuration, and I'm wondering if I can have a section of the configuration applied only if the request is received on a certain port. In short, this is about SSL. I have name based virtual hosts, I can make a configuration for port 80, then duplicate it all for port 443, and add the relevant SSL configurations. But this seems redundant. I was wondering if i can have something like: <VirtualHost *:80 *:443> and then I can put: <IfModule mod_ssl.c> SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ... SSLCertificateKeyFile ... SSLCACertificateFile ... </IfModule> inside an if statement that checks if connection is on port 443... or is such thing impossible? the server supports SNI, and I don't have any worries from non-SNI compliant browsers.

• Force Steam (and other programs that do not specify proxy settings) to use a proxy

  My school requires a proxy for all internet access. If you want to use the internet, it is impossible to not use a proxy. This makes it a problem for many programs that don't seem to let you enter proxy settings. How can I use Steam when I am behind a proxy? Is it possible to somehow enter the details into a configuration file, or force it to get the settings from Internet Explorer? If not, does software exist for creating a 'virtual' network adapter which will pass all traffic (or all protocol x traffic) through the proxy? Although I am facing this specific problem on Windows 7, solutions for all operating systems are welcome.

• Properly Hosting Multiple Sites on VDS

  I'm going to be moving about 7-10 websites (5-8 with Databases - MySQL) onto our new Virtual Private Server. I'm curious what the best way to host many sites on a single server is though. Do I create a directory for each site immediately within my root directory, and then point the domain names for each site to http://123.123.123.123/siteDirectory - or is there a more appropriate way to do this? I'm very interested in maintining control over how many concurent connections each site can have at any given time - would I be able to do that on the directory-level, or am I required to limit the concurrent-connections to the VPS itself?

• Why does the CentOS 5.8 install give an error about CD-ROM drive when using HP ILO?

  CentOS 5.8 I'm trying to install CentOS 5.8 on a box. I'm connecting the ISO to the server via a virtual disk using HP ILO. It initially seems to boot fine but in the middle of the anaconda text-mode package installation, it gives the following error: CD Not Found CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry. If I click OK, it gives me the same error. I don't understand how it could get this far and then complain about the CD-ROM drive. Any thoughts?

• No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

  (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). • Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, the virtual terminals are not accessible, ie, c+a+F1 etc does nothing, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console by booting off the installation cd, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! Additional Details on my blog and my first attempt at asking for help Update: I can reasonably say it is not a hardware fault, as a full install of 9.10 with dual screen nvidia xinemara indicate that nothing is wonky

I need to have email setup just to send out registration confirmations and new password requests. No one will have a mailbox on this server. It seems this means that I want to setup Postfix as SMTP only. I've also read about configuring Postfix null clients for simular needs. What is the difference between Postfix null client and SMTP only?

• How to Shrink large Hyper-V VM

  Using Disk2VHD utility I converted my bare-metal OS into Hyper-V VHD - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx And I could obtain a huge 190GB VHD file. Apart from performance issues, this VHD worked fine as guest when hosted on Windows Server 200 R2, Hyper-V. Having realized need to keeping only system files and application installations on VHD. I have deleted most of the junk data from this VHD and now it contains only 20-25 GB. But I am not able to shrink the VHD VM. Having done some research, I came to know, this as a limitation of .VHD files. Subsequently I followed these two step using Edit Virtual Hard Wizard on Windows 2012 Box. Convert from VHD to VHDX (took close to 3 hrs.) Compact (Another 4 hrs.) This did not ever shrink the VHDX either. Does Hyper-V does not provide proper support to handle large VHDs or VHDXs whose size are the range of 200GB.

  Hello, I have an win 2008 R2 machine (a home machine of mine) that I am messing around with and learning the server technologies. I also wanted to try out oracle, and was wondering if its possible to setup a LINUX machine with Oracle, and have the two interoperate. What I mean by that is if I setup the server and my laptop on a domain, would it be possible to communicate to that LINUX machine and thus the Oracle database, and if so, are there any good resources on the setup? I was going to create a LINUX hyper v virtual... Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

• Type Chinese with French keyboard

  I use a Mac with French keyboard, and I have installed a Windows 7 as virtual machine. Now I would like to type Chinese in this Windows 7. The normal input method for Chinese within Windows 7 allows me to input Chinese, but does not work perfectly, because it does not recognize I am using a French keyboard - it presumes I am using a English keybord... So for some keys, what I type on the keybord is not what the input method gives on the screen... Could anyone help on this?

• Snapshot/rollback for libvirt+KVM?

  I've recently begun using KVM for my development/test environment on a Linux host system with 8G memory. Prior, I was using VMware Fusion for my virtual environment, but my Macbook only has 2G memory. I tried VMware Server and ESX on the host instead of KVM, but the webUI doesn't run on Mac OSX's Firefox, and we're going to be doing more with KVM anyway. The main feature of VMware I miss is robust snapshot/rollback, but I'm missing this in KVM. I understand the snapshot command, but it shuts down the guest OS when complete, and then copying the disk image to preserve its state is cumbersome. Is this really the best way to manage snapshots on KVM?

• File downloaded from IIS6/Win2003 server to a Mac (and not PCs) is incredibly slow

  We have a test zip file on our customers server that we host for him that when downloading to a Mac is incredibly slow. On a Mac - trying the download via Safari 5.0.3 and Chrome 8.0.552.231 results in a quick burst of normal download speed then plummets to almost no speed at all after 1 or 2 meg (between 1 and 5 Kb/s - yes, KiloBITS per second! According to the network monitor). Downloading via Windows was fine and speedy. Tested via; IE7 7.0.5730.13 and Chrome Portable 8.0.552.224 On Windows XP Pro, and; IE8 8.0.7600.16385 in a Windows 7 virtual machine running via VirtualBox 4.0.0 r69151 on the same Mac mention above Google hasn't helped us out on this occasion, possibly because the search terms I'm having to use are quite generic. Has anybody ever experienced this and if so how do we fix it? Thanks in advance

  I am in the process of upgrading my Windows SBS 2008 server running Exchange, Active Directory and as a File server to Windows Server 2012 essentials. Now I know that Windows Server 2012 essentials does not have exchange, thus I was looking to migrate the Active directory and the file server to Windows Server 2012 essentials, Then I would have a separate Virtual machine running Windows server 2012 standard with Exchange 2013. Now my question is, what should I do first? Migrate the AD and File server to Windows 2012 essentials and then after the migration is finished, I create a local move of the mailboxes from SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 standard running exchange 2013? or should this be the other way round?

• .NET Framework 4.0 installation is very slow

  On my Windows Vista, it takes a full 12 minutes to install the .NET Framework 4.0. a) Is this normal? b) If not, can something be done about it? The reason I'm concerned about the speed is because it slows down the testing of our product installer considerably. Testing an installer is time consuming already, but this new .NET Framework installer makes it almost undoable. Detail: I did the test on a clean Vista inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. This setup does not show any performance issues in other situations. I tried both dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe and dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. They both take approximately the same time to install.

• smartctl or hddtemp for xvda [on hold]

  I'm trying to check the state of the drives on a remote server running Debian wheezy. I'm using a software RAID10 on top of, I guess, xen, since the entries in /dev are /dev/xvda and /dev/xvdb But it I try smartctl -a /dev/xvda I get /dev/xvda: Unable to detect device type Smartctl: please specify device type with the -d option. I've tried various device type guesses, none work Similar problem with hddtemp, which reports ERROR: /dev/xvda: can't determine bus type (or this bus type is unknown) I've searched the smartmontools documentation, but can't find any discussion of virtual disks. . . How do I get behind the virtualisation to something smart tools or hddtemp can work with?

• Moving VMWare Fusion image to Boot Camp

  I have Windows 7 64-bit running in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, but am disappointed with the performance, and so I want to try Boot Camp. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my applications; I just want to somehow copy my VMWare Fusion "disk image" to a Boot Camp partition. My initial thoughts are that I should be able to run a Windows backup program in VMWare Fusion to back up the entire virtual disk, then set up Boot Camp and restore from that backup. However, Googling finds a few posts by people who have tried that and have encountered problems. So, is there a "known good" procedure for doing this?

  I have 2 Dell R710 servers (intended to set up HyperV cluster) and a MD3000i SAN set up: Server1/Server2: NIC 1: connected to company LAN NIC 2: crossover to the other server's NIC 2 NIC 3: crossover to iSCSI port of SAN controller 1 NIC 4: crossover to iSCSI port of SAN controller 2 I have both servers setup as diskless servers with iSCSI boot from SAN without problem. But how can I access iSCSI from within the VM such that I can set up clustering inbetween the VMs? I can ping from the host to the SAN but found that NIC3/4 cannot be used for virtual network in HyperV? What am I doing wrong?

  Not sure the title is right. I have my site configured in IIS7 and I have another partner site which runs on a different port eg. http:// localhost:1234 /mysite. Can I have my parent site to have a virtual site http:// localhost /mysite to route requests to the partner site http://localhost:1234 /mysite. I should not redirect but I should basically proxy the requests. Any help here is appreciable. Thanks in advance.

• Simple, user friendly and strong file encryption in Windows

  I want a colleague of mine to send me a sensitive MS-Word document via e-mail. Since Word's encryption is questionable, I would like to encrypt the file using a passphrase. Do you know of any user-friendly encryption tool that a novice user can easily use? I wouldn't like to prompt for keys or anything like this - just provide simple interface for single file encryption. EDIT: I have solved this using Putty Secure Copy, through a Linux box I have somewhere. The user downloaded scp to the same directory where the file was, and I have send him the exact scp command by mail. Nice! • Confusion about HSRP Groups

  If I have a router that has several LANs on it, and each of these LAN is attached to a second router, do I need to use different HSRP groups for each LAN? With this set up, each virtual gateway will be on a Layer 2 segment. And within a router, no interface will have multiple gateways. So, For example: Router 1: F0/0: ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 standby ip 192.168.1.1 F2/0: ip address 192.168.2.2 255.255.255.0 standby ip 192.168.2.1 Router 2: F0/0: ip address 192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0 standby ip 192.168.1.1 F2/0: ip address 192.168.2.3 255.255.255.0 standby ip 192.168.2.1 Will this work, or do I need standby 1 ip 192.168.2.1 on the F2/0 interfaces? Since according to the RFC, the group number of the packet is in the HSRP multicast packets, my guess is that I don't need different groups, and that multiple groups are only needed when they are all on the same Layer 2 segment. However, I haven't been able to find this setup....

• Multiple WAN interfaces in same subnet on Sonicwall NSA220?

  (eta salutation, which keeps getting eaten.) Hi, all. I see a bunch of related questions, so I'm hesitant to ask, but: I have a situation where I have a Sonicwall NSA220 serving as firewall/router for two internal subnets to two external WAN connections. In some locations this is two separate ISPs. In others, it's the same ISP but with multiple circuits. The problem is that one ISP has been unable to provide unique subnets for each WAN interface. Is there any possibility that I might be able to bond the two WAN interfaces into a single virtual interface, and then use source-routing to get internal subnets communicating out the appropriate physical interface? Or even just use traffic-shaping to give each internal network appropriate shared bandwidth? I haven't found anything in the docs, but it seemed like it might be worth asking.   We are about to deploy a bunch of sites to some new servers. I have the following questions about application pools: 1) It seems advisable to have an application pool per website. Are there any caveats to this approach? Can one application pool, for example, hog all the CPU, Memory, Etc...? 2) When should you allow multiple worker processes in an application pool. When should you not? 3) Can private memory limit be used to prevent one application pool from interfering with another? Will setting it too low cause valid requests to recycle the application pool without getting a valid response? 4) What is the difference between private and virtual memory limits? 5) Are there compelling reasons NOT to run one application pool per site?
