  We are about to deploy a bunch of sites to some new servers. I have the following questions about application pools: 1) It seems advisable to have an application pool per website. Are there any caveats to this approach? Can one application pool, for example, hog all the CPU, Memory, Etc...? 2) When should you allow multiple worker processes in an application pool. When should you not? 3) Can private memory limit be used to prevent one application pool from interfering with another? Will setting it too low cause valid requests to recycle the application pool without getting a valid response? 4) What is the difference between private and virtual memory limits? 5) Are there compelling reasons NOT to run one application pool per site? • How Can I Restrict VSFTPD to a Particular Local Group?

  I'd like to control VSFTPD access by adding users to a group such that only members of the defined group can access the FTP services. I am thinking I can do this by modifying /etc/pam.d/vsftpd, but am not sure how to get started. Or is this only for virtual users in VSFTPD? I am aware of user_list and this does not seem to support groups. This doesn't provide the function I am looking for which is described above. If I am mistaken though this would be great. • How to setup a django site with Cherokee, DynDNS and virtual_env?

  I have a django project running with the dev server, and would like to try run it in a production environment. I wanted to try Cherokee for a change, so I installed it. We don't have a domain name yet, so I set up a DynDNS looking like stuff.gotdns.org. It works fine, I can see the Cherokee welcome page (so red, I first believed I got an error :-p). I ran the wizard to create a new virtual server for Django. No everything is setup, but I have nothing. Still the default Cherokee welcome page. What should I do now if I want to go to "http://stuff.gotdns.org" and see my website? What should I do now if I next want to make it available only at "http://project.stuff.gotdns.org"? Important fact, I use virtual_env, so your can call Python directly, you have to activate it first.

I think, maybe this error about SeLinux and disable it. But not working. Still same error. How can I fix this problem?

• MacBook Pro for Windows development via virtualization. Performance?

  I am a Windows/Web developer by profession and I have been considering a MacBook Pro as a replacement for my current development machine. I am impressed by the build quality, the uni-body construction and performance specs of the MacBook Pro. I am specifically interested in the 13.3" MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor with 4 GB RAM. What I am wondering is this ... what performance can I expect running SQL Server 2008, IIS, and Visual Studio 2010 within a virtual environment (VMWare Fusion and Windows 7) on the above mentioned MacBook Pro? I like the 13.3" model as the size is more portable, but am I expecting to much from a core 2 duo processor? Would I need to look at the next step up in MacBook Pro using the core i5 processor? • Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

  I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction? • Virtualbox PXE Boot Failing with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server

  Some fast help on this would be good, I have been on this problem for 14 hours. In a Virtualbox test environment I have 2 virtual machines networked together using a internal network (no traffic runs though the host, it is all at a software level). One is a fresh client with 512mb of ram and a dual core set-up, the other is the server with 1.5GB of ram and running server 2008 r2. The server is configured as a dns server, dchp server, domain controller and also serves PXE booting though WDS (Windows Deployment Services). Both machines can see each other and I am able to start a network boot. The issue comes at the second to last stage of the pre windows PE install. On TFTP download of boot.sdi it starts it but stops during the boot process.

• Big IP F5 outbound HTTP issues

  We've tried upgrading from 9.x to 10.2 on our F5 Big IP 3400 and everything went over fine apart from one thing. We're unable to establish any outbound HTTP (80) connections from any servers that are assigned to a virtual server. This is something that worked before and is required for certain calls our servers need to make. Interestingly HTTPS (443) connections work fine, it's literally just anything outbound over port 80 seems to fail. Does anyone know if anything has changed between 9.4 and 10.2 that would mean additional config would need to be made to allow for external HTTP connections? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

  I downloaded this and the instructions say: Important: You must enable the I/O APIC in order to use 64-bit mode. (See http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html.) On newer versions of VirtualBox, it may default to using SATA as the disk interface. This can cause a kernel panic in the VM. Switching to the IDE driver solves this problem. I am running this on Red Hat 64-bit mode (I've also tried on Ubuntu 64-bit with the same result). I pointed to the cloudera-vm image as a startup disk for the VM. I am getting this message: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ClouderaDevelopment. VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

• XPP-32 over W7-64 on music production laptop

  I need to upgrade my laptop and need high performance for music production (recording and mixing). My audio interface manufacturer seems to be unable to successfully convert their drivers to 64-bit. I do not trust a virtual machine to handle real-time audio recording at low enough latency so ... I would like to install XP Pro 32-bit on a separate partition and dual boot since most of the machines that can handle this application now ship with Windows 7 64-bit flavors. I'd like to transit to 64-bit over time assuming M-Audio does eventually get a handle on 64-bit drivers, but really need to ensure that I can stay at 32-bit for now. Does anyone have any experience with this or something similar?

  Motivation I have to manage a lot of virtual machines that I create by copying a template (VmWare image). Problem Now I have the problem that in the template the file /etc/hostname contains a given name that I want to change for each copy of the template. Facts The network interface is configured by DHCP. DNS entries exist. The system is a Ubuntu 9.10 server. Question I wonder if I can configure the template so that on startup it sets its hostname according to its DNS name. I could create an init script that parses the IP address, makes a DNS lookup and sets the hostname accordingly. But is there an easier way?

You've got one client that requires the equivalent of two computers worth, and 100 others that eat up the remaining 8. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.

  I've got a Dell Vostro 220 with an E7300 processor (Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66Mhz, LGA775 socket) and I'm thinking about upgrading my processor so I can run Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, which requires Hardware Virtualization support in the processor. Yes, I know this is underpowered for a server, I'm actually using it as a desktop machine but I'd like to use Hyper-V instead of Virtual Server (which I'm using now for running VMs). I'd like to keep the same motherboard and ideally the same CPU fan and RAM too. Any suggestions for a good, relatively cheap (under $200) processor upgrade?

  I've been reading a lot about java memory management, garbage collecting et al and I'm trying to find the best settings for my limited memory (1.7g on a small ec2 instance) I'm wondering if there is a direct correlation between my code size and the permgen setting. According to sun: The permanent generation is special because it holds data needed by the virtual machine to describe objects that do not have an equivalence at the Java language level. For example objects describing classes and methods are stored in the permanent generation. To me this means that it's literally storing my class def'ns etc... Does this mean there is a direct correlation between my compiled code size and the permgen I should be setting? My whole app is about 40mb and i noticed we're using 256mb permgen. I'm thinking maybe we're using memory that could be better allocated to dynamic code like object instances etc...

• Problems setting up home web server

  Has anyone been able to get a server working with the router smcwbr14t-g? Although I have been able to get Apache set up correctly and my website works on the internal IP 192.168.2.101, I've been running into a dead end when trying to get it to show up on my external IP. In my router, there is no option for port forwarding, but there are options for a 'virtual server'. Following the manual, I have it set up like this: http://imgur.com/zrcV7.png I also disabled the firewall. I configured Apache to listen to ports 80, 81, and 443, none of which solved the problem. However, the IP's 192.168.2.101:443 and :81 load fine. The problem is that I still cannot load the web site from my external IP, either from my computer or outside.

I have looked through the virtualbox manuals but nothing extremely technical came up (It was just a generic gloss over of the topic) How does it assign a different ip to the virtual machine but uses the same network card? Why does this different ip (I found using ip addr under linux) not show up under the "attached devices section" of my router but I can port forward to it? How come if I connect to a password protected wifi network, it does not require me to enter my password? Is this multihoming?

Whenever I say (translation from German): 'open quotes', I expect something like " or » to appear on the screen, but I simply get a message <M-kp-2> is undefined . Same goes for 'close quotes', I get <M-kp-7> is undefined. Does anybody know how to define those virtual keyboard strokes? (global-set-key [M-kp-2] "»") does not work.

• Converting a VMware player image from non-persistant to persistant

  I'm pondering setting up a virtual machine to generate app-v (since i got mdop from school) or thinapp application virtualisation packages. Ideally with either of these, i should work off a fresh system do the install, then copy out the packages produced. I'd like to not have to reinstall windows per package to get a fresh, unmodified stock copy of windows. I'm aware that its possible to make a hard disk image persistant in vmware player (one of my lecturers did it, but he's in another country). I'm wondering how would i convert a persistant image to a non persistant one? I'm currently running vmware player 4, with windows 7 guest and host.

• Dual boot Windows 7 with Windows 8- Dynamic Disk

  Its a long explanation. I have a HP Pavilion dm4 notebook. It has pre installed Windows 7 Home Pre. Recently, I tried to install Windows 8 developer preview on my notebook, but while installing, it only allowed me to insatll it on my primary Windows 7 drive I.e. drive C. I had kept 1 empty partition for Windows 8 but when I selectced that option, the next button at the bottom of the window just grey with some error saying Windows cannot boot from this drive....blah blah blah So I googled and found another way of doing it by VHD(virtual hard disk). This seemed to work but on restarting gave me "VHD_BOOT_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" error. After trying all possible ways for around 10 times, I gave up. I noticed that d only thing difference in d tutorials and my notebook is the Disk type. They all had Basic and I have Dynamic. Is that the reason m not able to boot Windows 8? Any suggestions?

  I have downloaded the newest most stable Linux kernel, 2.6.33.2. I thought I would test this using VirtualBox. So I create a dynamically sized harddisk of 4 GB. And installed CentOS 5.3 with just the minimum packages. I setup the make menuconfig with just the default settings.   Hi, I'm building a NAS using Openfiler2.3 (from 32-bit ISO), first of all I want to experiment it on VM first before going out and buy the harddrives needed. I created 5 virtual drives on VMware, sda is 2GB and the rest 1GB each (sdb to sde). I left sda blank and want to setup a RAID 10 disk using sdb, sdc, sdd and sde, 4 RAID partitions are setup successfully, but when I try to create a RAID device the only option for RAID level is 1, 0, 5 and 6. RAID 10 is not there! Can someone let me know what have I missed, please? TIA.
