• Efficient path-finding in free space

  I've got a game situated in space, and I'd like to issue movement orders, which requires pathfinding. Now, it's my understanding that A* and such mostly apply to trees, and not empty space which does not have pathfinding nodes. I have some obstacles, which are currently expressed as fixed AABBs- that is, there is no unbounded "terrain" obstacle. In addition, I expect most obstacles to be reasonably approximable as cubes or spheres. So I've been thinking of applying a much simpler pathfinding algorithm- that is, simply cast a ray from the current position to the target position, and then I can get a list of obstacles using spatial partitioning relatively quickly. What I'm not so sure about is how to determine the part where the ordered unit manoeuvres around the obstacles. What I've been thinking so far is that I will simply use potential fields- that is, all units will feel a strong repulsive force away from each other and a moderate force towards the desired point. This also has the advantage that to issue group orders, I can simply order a mid-level force towards another entity. But this obviously won't achieve the optimal solution. Will potential fields achieve a reasonable approximation given my parameters, or do I need another solution?

• install android sdk on kubuntu

  I'm trying to follow the instructions for installing the android sdk found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html After i've unpackaged and i run the android program under tools, I don't get all the options that I'm supposed to. The only 2 folders that show up are tools, and extras. Under tools, it only shows the "Android SDK Tools" with the status "Installed". Under the "extas" folder, I have nothing. I've made sure that my http: proxy settings are correct. And I've checked the logs. there are no errors. According to the android developer site, I'm supposed to install the SDK platform tools. has anyone tried this on ubuntu? I also checked and saw others were instructed to do an apt-get install ia32-libs but it failed for me. Besides which, I am running the 32bit os... so I don't think i would need to install that... ?? I've also tried following the instructions found here: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php/772 But... • Relationship between SOA and OOA

  Thomas Erl defines SOA as follows in his site: Service-oriented computing represents a new generation distributed computing platform. As such, it encompasses many things, including its own design paradigm and design principles, design pattern catalogs, pattern languages, a distinct architectural model, and related concepts, technologies, and frameworks. This definitely sounds like a whole new category which is parallel to object orientation. Almost one in which you would expect an entirely new language to exist for. Like procedural C and object oriented C#. Here is my understanding: In real life, we don't have entirely new language for SOA. And most application which have SOA architecture have an object oriented design underneath it. SOA is a "strategy" to make the entire application/service distributed and reliable. SOA needs OOPS working underneath it. Is this correct? Where does SOA (if at all it does) fit in with object oriented programming practices? Edit: I have learnt through answers that OOA and SOA work with each other and cannot be compared (in a "which is better" way). I have changed the title to "Relationship between SOA and OOA" rather than "comparison".

• IDC Recommends Oracle Solaris 11

  IDC published a research report this week on Oracle Solaris 11 and described it as "Delivering unique value."  The report emphasizes the ability of Oracle Solaris to scale up and provide a mission critical platform for a wide variety of computing. Solaris built-in server and network virtualization helps to lower costs and enable consolidation while reducing administration costs and risks. In their conclusion, IDC reports: Today, Oracle is a multi-OS vendor that is adjusting to the opportunities presented by a significantly expanded product portfolio. • Migration a database from 32bit to 64bit

  Database migrations from an 32bit environment to an 64bit environment keeping the same platform architecture (e.g. moving an Oracle 10.2.0.5 database from MS Windows XP 32bit to MS Windows Server 2003 64bit) does not happen that often anymore. But still we see them getting done. And there are a few things to note when doing such a move. First of all the important question is:Will you upgrade your database as part of this move - Yes or No? If you say "Yes" then you are almost done with that topic as we will take care of that bitnes move during the upgrade. The only thing you have to take care is OLAP in case you are using OLAP Option with Analytic Workspaces (AW) by yourself. Those store data in Binary LOBs - and in order to move AWs from 32bit to 64bit you have to export your AWs prior to the move - and import them later on. People who don't use OLAP don't have to take care on this. But if you say "No" (meaning: no upgrade actions involved - you keep your database version) then you have to make sure to invalidate all packages and stored code in the database before you shutdown your database in the 32bit environment and prior to moving it over. And the same rule as above for OLAP applies once you use the OLAP Option. In the source environment: startup upgrade;    -- [or startup migrate; -- for Oracle 9i] @?/rdbms/admin/utlirp.sqlshutdown immediate In the destination environment: startup upgrade @?/olap/admin/xumuts.plb --Only if OLAP Option is installed@?/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql The script utlirp.sql will invalidate all packages and stored code, utlrp.sql will recompile - and xumuts.plb will rebuild the OLAP Analytic Workspaces in case you have the OLAP Option installed.

• Creating a SQL Azure Database Should be Easier

  Every time I try to create a database + tables + data for Windows Azure SQL I get errors.  One of them is 'Filegroup reference and partitioning scheme' is not supported in this version of SQL Server.' It’s partly due to my poor memory (since I’ve succeeded before) and partly due to the failure of tools that should be helping me. For example, when I want to create a script from an existing database on my local workstation, I use SQL Server Management Studio (currently v 11.0.2100.60).  I go to Tasks > Generate Scripts which brings up the nice Generate and Publish Scripts wizard. When I go into the Advanced button, under Script for Server Version, why don’t I see SQL Azure as an option by now? The tool should be sorting this out for me, right? Maybe this is available in SQL Server Data Tools? I haven’t got into that yet. Just merge the functionality with SSMS, please. Anyway, I pick an older version of SQL for the target and still need to tweak it for Azure. For example, I take out all the “[dbo].” stuff. Why is it put there by the wizard? I also have to get rid of "ON [PRIMARY]"  to deal with the error I noted at the top. Yes, there’s information on what a table needs to look like in SQL Azure but the tools should know this so I don’t have to mess with it.

• Can i change the order of these OpenGL / Win32 calls?

  I've been adapting the NeHe ogl/win32 code to be more object orientated and I don't like the way some of the calls are structured. The example has the following pseudo structure: Register window class Change display settings with a DEVMODE Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Resize the GL scene Init GL The points in bold are what I want to move into a rendering class (the rest are what I see being pure win32 calls) but I'm not sure if I can call them after the win32 calls. Essentially what I'm aiming for is to encapsulate the Win32 calls into a Platform::Initiate() type method and the rest into a sort of Renderer::Initiate() method. So my question essentially boils down to: "Would OpenGL allow these methods to be called in this order?" Register window class Adjust window rect Create window Get DC Show the window Set it to foreground Set it to having focus Change display settings with a DEVMODE Find closest matching pixel format Set the pixel format to closest match Create rendering context Make that context current Resize the GL scene Init GL (obviously passing through the appropriate window handles and device contexts.) Currently, this script dbus-monitor "interface='org.freedesktop.Notifications'" | \ grep --line-buffered "member=Notify" | \ sed -u -e 's/.*/killall notify-osd/g' | \ bash will kill all pending notifications. It would be better to finesse the specific target OSD notification to cancel, by using org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id). Is there an interface method that can put this on (in?) the DBus to fire when a particular notify event occurs? The method will need to get the notify PID to use as the argument for CloseNotification(uint id). Alternatively, qdbus org.freedesktop.Notifications \ /org/freedesktop/Notifications \ org.freedesktop.Notifications.CloseNotification(uint id) could be used from the shell, if the (uint id) argument could be determined. The actual command syntax would use an integer in place of (uint id). Perhaps a better question to ask first might be "How is the DBus address for a notification found?". In hindsight the previous question "How is the (uint id) for a notification found?" is rhetorical! • Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. • Reduce weight in healthy way

  This post is my daily summary of activities that I am going to take to reduce my overall weight by 15 lbs. I am not an overweight person as per my height of 5.11 I have decent weight of 178.4 and good body build. But from a long time(approx 3 month) I am thinking of getting 2-3 abs (note not 6 abs) and reducing my weight to below 170 ( which I was 2 years ago). This post will work as my daily diary of what I ate, what exercises I did, what apps/software I used to monitor my weight loss. Sometime it will not contain much information but some time when I will research will contain information for people who really want to reduce weight. My current target for next few week is to run 2.5 miles everyday under 30 minutes. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetable. No burger or tacos. No meat either fat or lean. And checking body weight after every four hour. Here are reading for today10:00 AM  - 178.22:00 PM    - 178.4I have already ran for 2 miles in 25 minutes, did a little bit of shoulder exercise and had eaten small bowl of vegetable biryani and two bread.I hope this post and all coming post will give the reader the first hand experience of a person who had read every blog and articles related to reducing weight and now trying to do it by implementing all of them by self. My approach will be a healthy way of reducing weight, I am not going to starve my self or going to eat only fruits all day. I will enjoy all the food item that I like to eat and will work hard on my body. This way I will / reduce the weight naturally and will increase the flexibility, durability and immunity of my system /body.

  Struggling with locating patches for Sun products? Can't find your Oracle System Drivers? This question has been raised many times by customers and was the source of a short video in the Oracle System Support Newsletter in February 2012. The transition between SunSolve and My Oracle Support is to change how you think about the type of patch your looking for. For example, in SunSolve you might have typed e1000g if looking for an Enternet Driver.. but entering e1000g will not find anything in My Oracle Support - Patches and Update Menu. As you need to use the Product (Advanced) search which is driven of the Product Name, therefore you need to type "Ethernet" and select the ethernet product you are looking for to locate the patches for this product. Just to recap that video: If you are looking for the e1000g Ethernet Driver - You need to use Advance Search and search for Enternet 1. Log into My Oracle Support - Select Patches and Updates - Select Product or Family (Advanced Search). 2. In the product line enter: Ethernet and select the product name from the menu. 3. Check remove supersede patches - that ensure you only get relevant current patches in the results. 4. Select Search and the results are displayed. Now you have more options to include the platform (Solaris,Linux etc.) if want to further narrow the search. Need more information? The simulator is the result of a collaboration between Purdue University and the Imperial College of London. You can adjust the size, density, impact angle, and impact velocity of the asteroid as well as change the target from water to land. • Should I use OpenGL or DX11 for my game?

  I'm planning to write a game from scratch (a BIG Game, for commercial purpose). I'm aware that there are certain compute libraries like OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, C++ AMP as well as DirectCompute - both from MS (NOT interested in CUDA) are available in the market. I'm planning to write the game from the scratch, which includes the following engines... Physics Engine AI Engine Main Game Engine (... and if anything is missed). I'm aware that, there are some free physics engine libraries in the market. Not sure about free AI engine libraries. I'm bit confused in choosing between the OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, and C++ AMP libraries (as already mentioned i'm NOT interested in CUDA). I want my game to be published in Windows/Android/Mac OSX. It means it should be a cross-platform game. I will be having "one source code" that i'll compile for various platforms like Windows/Android/Mac OSX, and any others if i missed. Note: Since I'm NOT a Java guy, kindly do NOT suggest me the Java Language. For Graphics language should i use OpenGL or DirectX 11? I have heard that OpenGL runs on a single core, and not sure of DirectX 11. Between OpenGL and DirectX which one should i follow? or else, are there any other graphics language that i need to start with? I want to make use of the parallelism in GPU as well as CPU.

• On Screen Coin Animation

  am working with side scrolling skater game. I want to perform coin animation such that as player collect coin it moves upside and attach with currency sprite. My main character and coin present in game scene and currency sprite present in HUD layer. This situation creates problem for me. Directly I can not apply modifier to coin because it is side scrolling game so based on main character speed it reaches at different position. That I have checked. So that I have to generate other coin at same position at game layer coin has, in HUD layer and move upward to it. But I didn't able to get its y position correct though I can able to get x position correctly. Many time main character goes downward so it get minus value many time. I also tried following code float[] position = GameHUD.this .convertSceneCoordinatesToLocalCoordinates(GameManager .getInstance().getCoinX(), GameManager.getInstance() .getCoinY()); But I am getting same coordinate as I provide. No difference in that so please some one provide me guidance in that. Because I am near to complete my game. EDIT: Here game layer and hud layer is totally different. Actual coin present in game layer which player has to collect and at same position I want to generate another coin in hud layer to perform some animation. It is recommended to generate coin in hud layer because through that only I can able to complete my target.
