  • Stream Reuse in C#

    - by MikeD
I've been playing around with what I thought was a simple idea. I want to be able to read in a file from somewhere (website, filesystem, ftp), perform some operations on it (compress, encrypt, etc.) and then save it somewhere (somewhere may be a filesystem, ftp, or whatever). It's a basic pipeline design. What I would like to do is to read in the file and put it onto a MemoryStream, then perform the operations on the data in the MemoryStream, and then save that data in the MemoryStream somewhere. I was thinking I could use the same Stream to do this but run into a couple of problems: Everytime I use a StreamWriter or StreamReader I need to close it and that closes the stream so that I cannot use it anymore. That seems like there must be some way to get around that. Some of these files may be big and so I may run out of memory if I try to read the whole thing in at once. I was hoping to be able to spin up each of the steps as separate threads and have the compression step begin as soon as there is data on the stream, and then as soon as the compression has some compressed data available on the stream I could start saving it (for example). Is anything like this easily possible with the C# Streams? ANyone have thoughts as to how to accomplish this best? Thanks, Mike

  • Partial template specialization on a class

    - by Jonathan Swinney
I'm looking for a better way to this. I have a chunk of code that needs to handle several different objects that contain different types. The structure that I have looks like this: class Base { // some generic methods } template <typename T> class TypedBase : public Base { // common code with template specialization private: std::map<int,T> mapContainingSomeDataOfTypeT; } template <> class TypedBase<std::string> : public Base { // common code with template specialization public: void set( std::string ); // functions not needed for other types std::string get(); private: std::map<int,std::string> mapContainingSomeDataOfTypeT; // some data not needed for other types } Now I need to add some additional functionality that only applies to one of the derivative classes. Specifically the std::string derivation, but the type doesn't actually matter. The class is big enough that I would prefer not copy the whole thing simply to specialize a small part of it. I need to add a couple of functions (and accessor and modifier) and modify the body of several of the other functions. Is there a better way to accomplish this?

  • Properly changing Ajax MultiHandle Slider parameters on postbacks

    - by Matthew PK
Hi all, In VS2010 I have VB.NET codebehind aspx pages and I'm using Ajax multihandleslider extensions to filter search results on numerical values. Fistly, the multihandle sliders don't display in the designer... I have to remove the slider targets tag: In order to make it display in the designer... this isn't so much a big issue but an annoyance. I am displaying items in a given category. So I get the max and min prices for all items in that category and assign the sliderextension max/min values appropriately. This works fine until... I change the item category and go get a new max/min value for the slider control. I set the max/min values, then I set the target textbox values each to the corresponding max/min values. The slider handles don't repaint (or init?) properly Like say for example my initial min/max is 1/100 if I do a full postback and change the max value to 1000 then the slider bar (correctly) stays the same size but the handle appears WAYYYY to the right off the page and I have to scroll to it. When I click it, it shoots back onto the slider bar. I'm pulling my hair out... why do the slider handles only appear properly when I first set the min/max values?

  • Problem with Binding Multiple Objects on WPF

    - by Diego Modolo Ribeiro
Hi, I'm developing a user control called SearchBox, that will act as a replacer for ComboBox for multiple records, as the performance in ComboBox is low for this scenario, but I'm having a big binding problem. I have a base control with a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem, and my SearchControl shows that control so that the user can select the record. The SearchControl also has a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem on it, and it is being updated when the user selects something on the base control, but the UI, wich has the SearchControl, is not being updated. I used a null converter so that I could see if the property was updating, but it's not. Below is some of the code: This is the UI: <NectarControles:MaskedSearchControl x:Name="teste" Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="1" Height="21" ItemsSource="{Binding C001_Lista}" DisplayMember="C001_Codigo" Custom:CustomizadorTextBox.CodigoCampo="C001_Codigo" ViewType="{x:Type C001:C001_Search}" ViewModelType="{x:Type C001_ViewModel:C001_ViewModel}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=Instancia.C001_Holding, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged, Converter={StaticResource DebuggingConverter}}"> </NectarControles:MaskedSearchControl> This is the relevante part of the SearchControl: Binding selectedItemBinding = new Binding("SelectedItem"); selectedItemBinding.Source = this.SearchControlBase; selectedItemBinding.Mode = BindingMode.TwoWay; selectedItemBinding.UpdateSourceTrigger = UpdateSourceTrigger.PropertyChanged; this.SetBinding(SelectedItemProperty, selectedItemBinding); ... public System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.IEntityWithKey SelectedItem { get { return (System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.IEntityWithKey)GetValue(SelectedItemProperty); } set { SetValue(SelectedItemProperty, value); if (PropertyChanged != null) PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("SelectedItem")); } } Please someone help me... Tks...

  • Are there size limitations to the .NET Assembly format?

    - by McKAMEY
We ran into an interesting issue that I've not experienced before. We have a large scale production ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 Web App Project in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 which gets compiled and deployed using a Website Deployment Project. Everything has worked fine for the last year, until after a check-in yesterday the app started critically failing with BadImageFormatException. The check-in in question doesn't change anything particularly special and the errors are coming from areas of the app not even changed. Using Reflector we inspected the offending methods to find that there were garbage strings in the code (which .NET Reflector humorously interpreted as Chinese characters). We have consistently reproduced this on several machines so it does not appear to be hardware related. Further inspection showed that those garbage strings did not exist in the Assemblies used as inputs to aspnet_merge.exe during deployment. aspnet_merge.exe / Web Deployment Project Output Assemblies Properties: Merge all outputs to a single assembly Merge each individual folder output to its own assembly Merge all pages and control outputs to a single assembly Create a separate assembly for each page and control output In the web deployment project properties if we set the merge options to the first option ("Merge all outputs to a single assembly") we experience the issue, yet all of the other options work perfectly! My question: does anyone know why this is happening? Is there a size-limit to aspnet_merge.exe's capabilities (the resulting merged DLL is around 19.3 MB)? Are there any other known issues with merging the output of WAPs? I would love it if any Assembly format / aspnet_merge.exe gurus know about any such limitations like this. Seems to me like a 25MB Assembly, while big, isn't outrageous.

  • If I wanted to make a Pac-Man Game?

    - by SoulBeaver
I am immediately placing this as a community wiki thing. I don't want to ask for help in programming yet or have even a specific question about programming, but rather the process and the resources needed to make such a game. To put it simply: My college friend and I decided to give ourselves a really big challenge to further our skills in programming. In six months time we want to show ourselves a Pac-Man game. Pac-Man will be AI-controlled like the Ghosts and whichever Pac-Man lives the longest after a set of tries wins. This isn't like anything we've done so far. The goal here, for me, isn't to create a perfect game, but to try and complete it, learn a whole bunch in the process. Even if I don't finish in the time, which is a good possibility, I would want to have at least tried this. So my question is this: How should I start preparing myself? I already have started vector math, matrices, all that fun stuff. My desired platform would be DirectX 9.0c; is that advisable? Keep in mind that this is not a preference just for this project, but I wish to have some kind of future in graphics develepment, so I want to pick a platform that is future-safe. As for the game development in general, what should I take into consideration? I have never done a real game before, so any and all advise to development of mid-scale projects( if this would be a mid-scale project ) is greatly appreciated. My main concerns are the pit-falls and demotivators. Sorry if the question is so vague. If it doesn't belong here, then I will remove it. Otherwise, any and all advise regarding making larger projects is greatly appreciated.

  • web browser become slow or no response after several ajax calls

    - by Patrick
I'm totally newbie to jquery and ajax, my recently project is to help the representatives (reps) to manage customer quotations online. I have a page which displays all the quotations in a big table. I've managed to use ajax to fetch and display the quotations which associate to a particular rep after i click that rep's name. But the only problem is the speed of response. The first few clicks are ok and very smooth. But after several tries, the response become slow and I cant even scroll down the webpage, and later on the web browser craches.... Please have a look at my ajax code. here it is: <!-- AJAX FETCH QUOTES DATA + Tablesorter + FIXED TABLE HEADER--> <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ $(function(){ $("a.repID").click(function(){ $('div#loader').append("<p align='center'><img src='images/loadingbar2.gif' id='loading' /></p>"); var repID = $(this).attr("title"); $.ajax({ type:'POST', url:'quote_info.php', data:'repID=' + repID, cache: false, success:function(data) { $("#container").html('<div id="content">' + data + '</div>'); $("#loading").fadeOut(500, function() {$(this).remove();}); $("#sortme").tablesorter(); $('.tbl').fixedtableheader(); } }); return false; }); }); </script> <!-- AJAX FETCH QUOTES DATA + Tablesorter + FIXED TABLE HEADER-->

  • Fastest Method to Learn Web Design for a Developer

    - by hekevintran
I am a Web developer and in my projects I have noticed that my weakest point is not being good at the front-end design. Relying on other designers can be annoying if they are not able to produce as quickly as I want. My perspective on HTML/CSS is that it is basically a big hack that amazingly works. There are too many CSS and browser specific bugs/quirks to learn and remember them all without spending extreme amounts of time trying to untangle everything. Is there a fast track route to getting CSS into my brain? I have looked at some CSS books, but to me they really read as long lists of how to render things correctly in IE6 and how to make corners rounded. (Seriously why does it require so many tricks to make a sharp corner round? On any platform but the Web this would be called a major oversight.) Does there exist something that does the analogous to CSS that jQuery does for JavaScript? Using jQuery you don't need to know JavaScript well to make things that work. I am not interested in learning why IE6 does things in weird ways because I don't care about supporting it at all. I am more interested in a method of learning how to use CSS to do what I want without spending hours and hours reading obscure blogs.

  • css div positioning question

    - by SoulieBaby
Hi all, I have three divs with the following css: div#container { width: 780px; } div#photos { width: 780px; height: 300px; } div#content { position: relative; top: -106px; width: 780px; } <div id="container"> <div id="photos">photos are here</div> <div id="content">content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer content goes here, but sits slightly on top of the photos layer</div> </div> My problem is that because I've set the content layer to be top:-106px there's a big gap underneith, when I wanted the "container" div to end immediately after the "content" div. I tried setting margin-bottom: -106px on the "container" div but that didn't change the height of the "container" div.. The "content" div will have varied height as it's obviously for text, etc. Is there any way of making this work? Thanks in advance :)

  • What is the relationship between Turing Machine & Modern Computer ?

    - by smwikipedia
I heard a lot that modern computers are based on Turing machine. I just cannot build a bridge from a conceptual Turing Machine to a real modern computer. Could someone help me build this bridge? Below is my current understanding. I think the computer is a big general-purpose Turing machine. Each program we write is a small specific-purpose Turing machine. The classical Turing machine do its job based on the input and its current state inside and so do our programs. Let's take a running program (a process) as an example. We know that in the process's address space, there's areas for stack, heap, and code. A classical Turing machine doesn't have the ability to remember many things, so we borrow the concept of stack from the push-down automaton. The heap and stack areas contains the state of our specific-purpose Turing machine (our program). The code area represents the logic of this small Turing machine. And various I/O devices supply input to this Turing machine.

  • A function where small changes in input always result in large changes in output

    - by snowlord
I would like an algorithm for a function that takes n integers and returns one integer. For small changes in the input, the resulting integer should vary greatly. Even though I've taken a number of courses in math, I have not used that knowledge very much and now I need some help... An important property of this function should be that if it is used with coordinate pairs as input and the result is plotted (as a grayscale value for example) on an image, any repeating patterns should only be visible if the image is very big. I have experimented with various algorithms for pseudo-random numbers with little success and finally it struck me that md5 almost meets my criteria, except that it is not for numbers (at least not from what I know). That resulted in something like this Python prototype (for n = 2, it could easily be changed to take a list of integers of course): import hashlib def uniqnum(x, y): return int(hashlib.md5(str(x) + ',' + str(y)).hexdigest()[-6:], 16) But obviously it feels wrong to go over strings when both input and output are integers. What would be a good replacement for this implementation (in pseudo-code, python, or whatever language)?

  • How do I scrape information off ASP.NET websites when paging and JavaScript links are being used?

    - by Ian Roke
I have been given a staff list which is supposed to be up to date but it doesn't match an intranet People Finder which is written in ASP.NET. As the information is sensitive I am not able to access the database the People Finder is using so the only way I can get at the information is by scraping the structure starting at the top brass at the top and then going through each tier in turn. Each person has a Staff number which then forms the URL http://intranet/peoplefinder/index.aspx?srn=ABC1234 and then all the people who report to them are listed underneth in the format <a id="gvEmployees_ctl03_lnkFullName" href="index.aspx?srn=ABC4321" target="_self"> where each URL indicates the Staff number and provides a link to their team. The trouble arises when the teams are big as paging is implemented in the GridView with an URL such as <a href="javascript:__doPostBack('gvEmployees','Page$2')">2</a>. How would I scrape this page, capture the SRN and other details along with the people who report to the person on all pages of the GridView then loop through each reportee and do the same process until the whole list is complete?

  • LaTeX book class: Twosided document with wrong margins

    - by fgysin
    I am trying to write my thesis in latex... Cannot get the layout straight though :? I'm using the following document class: \documentclass[11pt,a4paper,twoside,openright]{book} My problem is: on the odd numbered pages there is a big margin right, and a small margin left - it should be the other way round... (for binding & stuff) I am a little puzzled by this - am I just to stupid to see the obvious? The odd page numbers appear on the 'right' page of a bound document, so there needs to be a larger margin left for bindin. Right? Why does LaTeX not behave like this? Here is the full code to produce a small Tex file that shows my problem: \documentclass[11pt,a4paper,twoside,openright]{book} \begin{document} \chapter{blah} Lorem ipsum ius et accumsan tractatos, aliquip deterruisset cu usu. Ea soleat eirmod nostrud eum, est ceteros similique ad, at mea tempor petentium. At decore neglegentur quo, ea ius doming dictas facilis, duo ut porro nostrum suavitate. \end{document}

  • Fast JSON serialization (and comparison with Pickle) for cluster computing in Python?

    - by user248237
I have a set of data points, each described by a dictionary. The processing of each data point is independent and I submit each one as a separate job to a cluster. Each data point has a unique name, and my cluster submission wrapper simply calls a script that takes a data point's name and a file describing all the data points. That script then accesses the data point from the file and performs the computation. Since each job has to load the set of all points only to retrieve the point to be run, I wanted to optimize this step by serializing the file describing the set of points into an easily retrievable format. I tried using JSONpickle, using the following method, to serialize a dictionary describing all the data points to file: def json_serialize(obj, filename, use_jsonpickle=True): f = open(filename, 'w') if use_jsonpickle: import jsonpickle json_obj = jsonpickle.encode(obj) f.write(json_obj) else: simplejson.dump(obj, f, indent=1) f.close() The dictionary contains very simple objects (lists, strings, floats, etc.) and has a total of 54,000 keys. The json file is ~20 Megabytes in size. It takes ~20 seconds to load this file into memory, which seems very slow to me. I switched to using pickle with the same exact object, and found that it generates a file that's about 7.8 megabytes in size, and can be loaded in ~1-2 seconds. This is a significant improvement, but it still seems like loading of a small object (less than 100,000 entries) should be faster. Aside from that, pickle is not human readable, which was the big advantage of JSON for me. Is there a way to use JSON to get similar or better speed ups? If not, do you have other ideas on structuring this? (Is the right solution to simply "slice" the file describing each event into a separate file and pass that on to the script that runs a data point in a cluster job? It seems like that could lead to a proliferation of files). thanks.

  • Is is possible to populate a datatable using a Lambda expression(C#3.0)

    - by deepak.kumar.goyal
I have a datatable. I am populating some values into that. e.g. DataTable dt =new DataTable(); dt.Columns.Add("Col1",typeof(int)); dt.Columns.Add("Col2",typeof(string)); dt.Columns.Add("Col3",typeof(DateTime)); dt.Columns.Add("Col4",typeof(bool)); for(int i=0;i< 10;i++) dt.Rows.Add(i,"String" + i.toString(),DateTime.Now,(i%2 == 0)?true:false); There is nothing wrong in this program and gives me the expected output. However, recently , I am learning Lambda and has done some basic knowledge. With that I was trying to do the same thing as under Enumerable.Range(0,9).Select(i = > { dt.Rows.Add(i,"String" + i.toString(),DateTime.Now,(i%2 == 0)?true:false); }); But I am unsuccessful. Is my approach correct(Yes I know that I am getting compile time error; since not enough knowledge on the subject so far)? Can we achieve this by the way I am doing is a big doubt(as I donot know.. just giving a shot). If so , can some one please help me in this regard. I am using C#3.0 and dotnet framework 3.5 Thanks

  • Optimize an SQL statement

    - by kovshenin
    Hey, I'm running WordPress, the database diagram could be found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Database_Description After doing tonnes of filters and applying some hooks to the core, I'm left with the following query: SELECT SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS wp_posts.* FROM wp_posts JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_beds ON (ppmeta_beds.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_beds.meta_key = 'pp-general-beds' AND ppmeta_beds.meta_value >= 2) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_baths ON (ppmeta_baths.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_baths.meta_key = 'pp-general-baths' AND ppmeta_baths.meta_value >= 3) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_furnished ON (ppmeta_furnished.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_furnished.meta_key = 'pp-general-furnished' AND ppmeta_furnished.meta_value = 'yes') JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_pool ON (ppmeta_pool.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_pool.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-pool' AND ppmeta_pool.meta_value = 'yes') JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_pool_type ON (ppmeta_pool_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_pool_type.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-pool-type' AND ppmeta_pool_type.meta_value IN ('tennis', 'voleyball', 'basketball', 'fitness')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_sport ON (ppmeta_sport.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_sport.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-sport' AND ppmeta_sport.meta_value = 'yes') JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_sport_type ON (ppmeta_sport_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_sport_type.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-sport-type' AND ppmeta_sport_type.meta_value IN ('tennis', 'voleyball', 'basketball', 'fitness')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_parking ON (ppmeta_parking.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_parking.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-parking' AND ppmeta_parking.meta_value = 'yes') JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_parking_type ON (ppmeta_parking_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_parking_type.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-parking-type' AND ppmeta_parking_type.meta_value IN ('street', 'off-street', 'garage')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_garden ON (ppmeta_garden.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_garden.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-garden' AND ppmeta_garden.meta_value = 'yes') JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_garden_type ON (ppmeta_garden_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_garden_type.meta_key = 'pp-facilities-garden-type' AND ppmeta_garden_type.meta_value IN ('private', 'communal')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_type ON (ppmeta_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_type.meta_key = 'pp-general-type' AND ppmeta_type.meta_value IN ('villa', 'apartment', 'penthouse')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_status ON (ppmeta_status.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_status.meta_key = 'pp-general-status' AND ppmeta_status.meta_value IN ('off-plan', 'resale')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_location_type ON (ppmeta_location_type.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_location_type.meta_key = 'pp-location-type' AND ppmeta_location_type.meta_value IN ('beachfront', 'countryside', 'town-center', 'near-the-sea', 'hillside', 'private-resort')) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_price_range ON (ppmeta_price_range.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_price_range.meta_key = 'pp-general-price' AND ppmeta_price_range.meta_value BETWEEN 10000 AND 50000) JOIN wp_postmeta ppmeta_area_range ON (ppmeta_area_range.post_id = wp_posts.ID AND ppmeta_area_range.meta_key = 'pp-general-area' AND ppmeta_area_range.meta_value BETWEEN 50 AND 150) WHERE 1=1 AND (((wp_posts.post_title LIKE '%fdsfsad%') OR (wp_posts.post_content LIKE '%fdsfsad%'))) AND wp_posts.post_type = 'property' AND (wp_posts.post_status = 'publish' OR wp_posts.post_status = 'private') ORDER BY wp_posts.post_date DESC LIMIT 0, 10 It's way too big. Could anybody please show me a way of optimizing all those joins into fewer statements? As you can see they all use the same tables but under different names. I'm not an SQL guru but I think there should be a way, because this is insane ;) Thanks! Update Here's what explain returns: http://twitpic.com/1cd36p

  • Understanding byte order and functions like CFSwapInt32HostToBig

    - by Typeoneerror
    I've got an enumeration in my game. A simple string message with an appended PacketType is being sent with the message (so it knows what to do with the message) over GameKit WIFI connection. I used Apple's GKRocket sample code as a starting point. The code itself is working fantastically; I just want to understand what the line with CFSwapInt32HostToBig is doing. What on earth does that do? and why does it need to do it? My guess is that it's making sure the PacketType value can be converted to an unsigned integer so it can send it reliably, but that doesn't sound all that correct to me. The documentation states "Converts a 32-bit integer from big-endian format to the host’s native byte order." but I don't understand what the means really. typedef enum { PacketTypeStart, // packet to notify games to start PacketTypeRequestSetup, // server wants client info PacketTypeSetup, // send client info to server PacketTypeSetupComplete, // round trip made for completion PacketTypeTurn, // packet to notify game that a turn is up PacketTypeRoll, // packet to send roll to players PacketTypeEnd // packet to end game } PacketType; // .... - (void)sendPacket:(NSData *)data ofType:(PacketType)type { NSLog(@"sendPacket:ofType(%d)", type); // create the data with enough space for a uint NSMutableData *newPacket = [NSMutableData dataWithCapacity:([data length]+sizeof(uint32_t))]; // Data is prefixed with the PacketType so the peer knows what to do with it. uint32_t swappedType = CFSwapInt32HostToBig((uint32_t)type); // add uint to data [newPacket appendBytes:&swappedType length:sizeof(uint32_t)]; // add the rest of the data [newPacket appendData:data]; // Send data checking for success or failure NSError *error; BOOL didSend = [_gkSession sendDataToAllPeers:newPacket withDataMode:GKSendDataReliable error:&error]; if (!didSend) { NSLog(@"error in sendDataToPeers: %@", [error localizedDescription]); } }

  • Explaining the need to avoid horizontal scroll

    - by Bradley Herman
I need help explaining to my boss why her design is poor on a client's website. She has no knowledge of the web, and it can be difficult as a web developer working with a woman who is a graphic designer (not even a web designer really). On a current site she has designed, an image bar "needs" to be ~1200px according to her, though it isn't necessary with the content. A quick sketch to illustrate what's going on: As you see, the banner spills out past the 960px of the content and as wide as 1200px. This creates a horizontal scroll when all the content is viewable within the 960px wide viewport. I need to make this an <img and not a CSS background because it's a jQuery slideshow that fades from image to image. I think this is a big problem because a lot of people are going to get a horizontal scroll bar imposed in their browser when they're still able to see all the relevant content. She thinks no one will notice and it'll be fine; I think it's very bad practice and confusing to the end user. How do I explain the problem to her?

  • Can I create template-based library objects in Dreamweaver CS5?

    - by Danjah
At work we need two 'streams' of template. The first are general layout templates, like the ones already available in the MX through CS5 packages (except we'd have our own customised ones). The second are more granular objects, some of which are functional. In both cases, I don't want Jimmy to be able to wreak havoc inside anything other than the 'editable regions' which make up the templates. Now this is fine if I stick with the first scenario (layout templates) where there's simply a big chunk of editable region for good ole Jim to sprawl into, think of this as the 'body content' area. But I really do need these granular library (or snippet) objects to work in the same way. Unfortunately with my attempts so far they don't work as I'd have thought - perhaps for good reason? When I create a blank template and throw in my chunk of HTML (unobstrusive JS and external CSS use selectors in this HTML to provide style and function) and save it as a new library item or snippet, all looks well. Then I create a new document based on a layout template and save it as a plain html file (still all good so far). Next I drop in my custom library item... still all good... but then I go to save the document and it only allows me to save it as a new template! I expected it would just allow me to save it as HTML and have it simply respect the defined editable regions, as happens in the containing page 'body content' editable region. Apologies if that got specific and technical quite quickly, but it is quite particular. If you want some example files lemme know and I'll zip some up. Many thanks :) p.s It is not a requirement that library objects must somehow inject their dependency files into the newly created page - I already know what they'll be. Also, I know I must 'detatch from original' once I drop a library item into a document which then allows customisation of the library object.

  • Which persistent & lightweight queue messaging for cross domain (> 2) data exchange with rails integ

    - by Erwan
Hi all, I'm looking for the right messaging system for my needs. Can you help me ? For now, there won't be a huge amount of data to process, but I don't want to be limited later ... The machines are not just web servers, so the messaging tool should be lightweight, even if processing is not very speed. When some data change on a server, all servers should have the information and process it locally. (should I create one channel per server on each of them ?) The frontend is written on Rails, so it is important, in order to simplify the development, that there is a gem / plugin to manage communications and data sent. At this time : RabbitMQ + workling seems to fit my needs. Could this be a right choice ? ActiveMQ make me afraid, because of Java (I really don't know very well Java, but it seems to me to be big CPU consumer) Others don't seem to be as mature as them. There might be lot of development using this kind of technology, so I can't go to the wrong way ! Thank you for help.

  • Vertical-Align: A Full Explanation

    - by Livvy Jeffs
I've been struggling with vertical alignments, a seemingly simple enough process that has a lot of idiosyncrasies throughout different languages and element types. I've done a lot of reading through stackexchange and can't seem to find a common thread of understanding. Here are the rules that I have been able to gather: 1) Vertical-align does not work in <\div>s, you have to set div {display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle} This seems like a big hassle, especially since table-cells override the height limitation even when overflow is set to hidden and expands to fit content, which means the vertical "center" is variable. I just read some source-code from Pinterest where button {vertical-align: middle}, but no other vertical-align commands seem to work. It seems as if button is by default aligned in the middle. Can someone provide a clear explanation for the vertical-align attribute? What html elements respond to vertical-align? Which html elements have default vertical-align attributes? Which html elements have non-overridable vertical-align attributes? And any clues as to understanding the idiosyncracies would help as well! Thanks in advance!

  • Use the repository pattern when using PLINQO generated data?

    - by Chad
I'm "upgrading" an MVC app. Previously, the DAL was a part of the Model, as a series of repositories (based on the entity name) using standard LINQ to SQL queries. Now, it's a separate project and is generated using PLINQO. Since PLINQO generates query extensions based on the properties of the entity, I started using them directly in my controller... and eliminated the repositories all together. It's working fine, this is more a question to draw upon your experience, should I continue down this path or should I rebuild the repositories (using PLINQO as the DAL within the repository files)? One benefit of just using the PLINQO generated data context is that when I need DB access, I just make one reference to the the data context. Under the repository pattern, I had to reference each repository when I needed data access, sometimes needing to reference multiple repositories on a single controller. The big benefit I saw on the repositories, were aptly named query methods (i.e. FindAllProductsByCategoryId(int id), etc...). With the PLINQO code, it's _db.Product.ByCatId(int id) - which isn't too bad either. I like both, but where it gets "harrier" is when the query uses predicates. I can roll that up into the repository query method. But on the PLINQO code, it would be something like _db.Product.Where(x = x.CatId == 1 && x.OrderId == 1); I'm not so sure I like having code like that in my controllers. Whats your take on this?

  • java time check API

    - by ring bearer
I am sure this was done 1000 times in 1000 different places. The question is I want to know if there is a better/standard/faster way to check if current "time" is between two time values given in hh:mm:ss format. For example, my big business logic should not run between 18:00:00 and 18:30:00. So here is what I had in mind: public static boolean isCurrentTimeBetween(String starthhmmss, String endhhmmss) throws ParseException{ DateFormat hhmmssFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMddhh:mm:ss"); Date now = new Date(); String yyyMMdd = hhmmssFormat.format(now).substring(0, 8); return(hhmmssFormat.parse(yyyMMdd+starthhmmss).before(now) && hhmmssFormat.parse(yyyMMdd+endhhmmss).after(now)); } Example test case: String doNotRunBetween="18:00:00,18:30:00";//read from props file String[] hhmmss = downTime.split(","); if(isCurrentTimeBetween(hhmmss[0], hhmmss[1])){ System.out.println("NOT OK TO RUN"); }else{ System.out.println("OK TO RUN"); } What I am looking for is code that is better in performance in looks in correctness What I am not looking for third-party libraries Exception handling debate variable naming conventions method modifier issues

  • Link to RSS/Atom feed, relative, doesn't work in Firefox

    - by Adrian Smith
I have a weird problem. I generate a HTML page, hosted let's say at http://www.x.com/stuff which contains <head> <link type="application/atom+xml" rel="alternate" href="/stuff/feed"/> .. </head> The result is: In IE7 all works well - you can click on the feed icon in the browser and the feed is displayed In Firefox, view source, click on the linked /stuff/feed and you see the source of the feed, so that works as expected In Firefox, view the page (not source), then click on the feed icon in the address bar, I get an error that it can't retrieve the URL feed://http//www.x.com/stuff/feed So the problem is, that it's appending feed:// to the front of the URL and then taking out the colon : after the http. I understand that feed: is HTTP anyway so perhaps the adding of that isn't a big problem. But anyway, the fact is, that URL Firefox generates out of my <link> tag doesn't work. I have considered making the URL absolute, but I haven't found any evidence that those URLs have to be absolute, nor can I understand why that would be the case. And for various reasons it would be inconvenient in my code to generate an absolute URL. I can do it if necessary but I would prefer to see proof (e.g. specification, or Mozilla bug report) that it's necessary before making my code messy What do you think? Does anyone know of any evidence that the URL should be absolute? Or am I doing something else wrong? It seems such a simple/obvious tag, where nothing could go wrong, but I can't get it to work.
