• What are the signs that a ten days debugging session will not resolve an issue? [on hold]

  Ten days ago, we fixed a bug on a large application and the hot fix has created a disappearing of some data from the user point of view (side effect). Data are not deleted, but have been set to hidden status. It could be possible to get the data back, but the thing seems to be hard: we've already spent 10 days to understand and reproduce the problem (mostly with SQL queries but sometimes it is necessary to update the database to test the application logic). My questions are : is 10 days a normal amount of time for these kind of problems? should we keep on and retrieve the data or should we give up this work (so the customer-relationship person will tell these users sorry for the loss, but your data have disappeared or maybe tell nothing at all)? what can be the signs that shows that we should stop to search for how to solve this issue? Edit about the context : we are a small team(3), users are not the customers, and lost data are not about the users money, bank or vital data. This is a question from a confused developer about development methodologies and business concerns, not about how we should deal with the customers.

• Grub not loading after Windows 8 Install

  My system was configured to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Windows 7. Today I got my hands on the MSDN release of Windows 8 and I installed it over my Windows 7. Now the computer just boots to Windows 8 directly without loading the GRUB screen. So I followed the steps as suggested in: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows. I haven't done any measurements since I have yet to write the questions and would like to gather more information before committing to one or another option. As far as I understand: (a) Option 1 will perform better since there will be no need to populate the collection and then garbage-collect the questions; (b) Option 1 will require extra memory: 1000 categories x 100 questions x 4 bytes for each reference = 400 Kb, which is not significant. So I'm leaning to Option 1, but just wondered if I'm correct in my assumptions and not missing something important? Perhaps someone has faced a similar dilemma? Or perhaps it doesn't actually matter that much?

• Ubuntu Raring on iMac 2008; graphics update ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro broke my Raring this morning!

  Was working on my iMac(2008) 20,5" this morning when again some GLX etc updates appeared! As usual I let the update-installer do it's job; when finished updating, my screen got scrambled; I can not work anymore as the screen shivers, shakes and graphics is one big mess. Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work either as most of the time my screen is black completely! When booting into OSX 10.8.5 (Raring dual boot with OSX 10.8.5), OSX graphics works flawlessly! Can anybody indicate me which ATI Radeon drivers I can download which repairs the 'malversation' of this mornings updates? I guess I will have to startup with some rescue boot disk (Knoppix?) to do manipulations… As I'm still a noob as well I need clear explanations (please). Raring worked perfectly in dual boot on my iMac until this mornings updates! Needles to say the 'final resort' is restarting (re)installation of Ubuntu Raring, but want to attempt to rescue my present 13.04. Thank you! Kind regards, Gaytan!

• Google Analytics API data for goals (funnels) doesn't match - how do they reconcile?

  I have a Google Analytics account with a well-functioning funnel made up of 4 goals. I can query the API and get the data out, but it does not match the funnel report in Analytics. Without getting into specific values, I can give you an example with faked data. Here's how the funnel might look: Shopping Cart 100 > 100 > 20 80 (80%) Address Page 5 > 85 > 25 60 (71%) Payment Page 2 > 62 > 10 52 (84%) Checkout 1 > 53 (49.07% funnel conversion rate) Okay, so you would expect the API to output data something like this: goal1Starts goal1Completions goal1Abandons 100 80 20 goal2Starts goal2Completions goal2Abandons 85 60 25 goal3Starts goal3Completions goal3Abandons 62 52 10 goal4Starts goal4Completions goal4Abandons 53 53 0 Instead, it's different. Firstly, the abandons are associated with the following goal (so goal1 always has 0 abandons and goal4 always has 0 abandons. Okay, I can work with that. What's confusing is that the numbers are always a little different. The goal1Completions always match the report, as do the goal4Completions, but everything else is off by a small amount. Sometimes it's only 2 visits, other times it's off by 50. • How can I guarantee a solvable Fifteen Puzzle shuffle?

  I am making a 15 Puzzle game in C# that allows the user to enter a custom row and column value up to a maximum of a 10 x 10 puzzle. I am having problems with the shuffle method. I want to make it so the puzzle is always solvable by first creating a winning puzzle then shuffling the empty space. The problem is it is too inefficient to call every click event each time. I need a way to invoke the click event of a button adjacent to the empty space but not diagonal. I also use an invisible static button for the empty spot. The PuzzlePiece class inherits from Button. I am not too sure how to do this. • How do you quantify competency in terms of time (years)?

  While looking for a job via agencies some time ago, I kept having questions from the recuitment agents or in the application forms like: How many years of experience do you have in: Oracle ASP.NET J2EE etc etc etc.... At first I answered faithfully... 5yrs, 7yrs, 2 yrs, none, few months etc etc.. Then I thought; I can be doing something shallow for 7 years and not being competent at it simply because I am just doing a minor support for a legacy system running SQL2000 which requires 10 days of my time for the past 7 years. Eventualy I declined to answers such questions. I wonder why do they ask these questions anymore. Anyone who just graduated with a computer science can claim 3 to 4 years experience in anything they 'touched' in the cirriculum, which to me can be equivalent to zero or 10 years depending how you look at it. It might hold true decades ago where programmers and IT skills are of very different nature. I might be wrong but I really doubt 'time' or 'years' are a good gauge of competency or experience anymore. Any opinion/rebuttal are welcome!

• No wubildr, No spaceleft, Boot Error and A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing

  At first I was downloading Ubuntu 12.10 using Windows Installer, but I cancelled it after just 2-3 minutes and dowloaded 32-Bit ISO (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386). Then I created bootable USB Stick (new HP 210 v210 w) using Pendrivelinux (Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.1.4). I Formatted D Drive. (Both by Windows & EaseUS) I've set boot priority correctly. But after getting message "Boot Error", I ran wubi.exe directly from USB drive. Now the message is "A previous installation was detected in D:\ubuntu. Please uninstall that before continuing." I formatted D: again and performed disk check, surface test using EaseUS. It shows no error or bad sectors. Formatted & checked my pendrive too. Directly ran .iso. But same error keeps coming. I found way around above problems, by copying extracted .iso on D:\ and installing Ubuntu using wubi.exe and though on boot it was shown with Windows 7, selecting it caused following error Try hd(0,0): NTFS5 : No wubildr Try hd(0,1): NTFS5 : So, I uninstalled it and Reeinstalled it Now installation fails at around 7mins saying " An error occurred. No space left on device. For more info please see log file " My D: is a 9 GB partition. (99% Free) Ubuntu Site 12.10 says it needs around 4.5 GB. Now Trying it by extendin D: to 10 GB... Got No wubildr. Please help. tdc2bdc

• jquery selector for elements beside one another? [migrated]

  this SHOULD be simple, but I have been through the Jquery Selector help for about an hour now and nothing seems to be working. Help! I am basically trying to pull the text (an address) of a SPAN after a user clicks on the link next to it. Please note though, I will have about 10 on a page, so I cannot set a static address. It must be pulled when the user clicks. The html code: <a href="3" class="clicky">Click to Show Map</a> <span style="display: none" class="theaddy">123 Fake Street, Somewhere Else, 12341</span> So really, my question is, how do I grab the text from .theaddy when a user clicks on .clicky? As I said, I cannot use var propertyaddy = $(.theaddy).text(); because there are 10 of these addy's on the same page. I need some sort of "THIS" Next To kinda thing. I also tossed around the idea of placing the SPAN inside the A, but my efforts on that weren't working either. Thank you in advance for any help!

• Custom binding with WCF

  I have a wcf service where i have to implement the call backs and also i need to host the wcf service on the IIS 6.0, since IIS6.0 doesnot support the net.tcp binding, i decided to go for the custom binding. The reasons for going for custom binding is that the service is accessed by different clients in different timezones. Using custom binding i can set the allowed clock skew time to other values other than the default one. But as soon as i run the server and client on different machine i get the following error "Could not connect to http://10.155.18.198:9000/e60ba5b3-f979-4922-b9f8-c820caaa04c2. TCP error code 10060: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 10.155.18.198:9000." Can anyone in the community help me in this regard.

• Benchmark Linq2SQL, Subsonic2, Subsonic3 - Any other ideas to make them faster ?

  I am working with Subsonic 2 more than 3 years now... After Linq appears and then Subsonic 3, I start thinking about moving to the new Linq futures that are connected to sql. I must say that I start move and port my subsonic 2 with SubSonic 3, and very soon I discover that the speed was so slow thats I didn't believe it - and starts all that tests. Then I test Linq2Sql and see also a delay - compare it with Subsonic 2. My question here is, especial for the linq2sql, and the up-coming dotnet version 4, what else can I do to speed it up ? What else on linq2sql settings, or classes, not on this code that I have used for my messures I place here the project that I make the tests, also the screen shots of the results. How I make the tests - and the accurate of my measures. I use only for my question Google chrome, because its difficult for me to show here a lot of other measures that I have done with more complex programs. This is the most simple one, I just measure the Data Read. How can I prove that. I make a simple Thread.Sleep(10 seconds) and see if I see that 10 seconds on Google Chrome Measure, and yes I see it. here are more test with this Sleep thead to see whats actually Chrome gives. 10 seconds delay 100 ms delay Zero delay There is only a small 15ms thats get on messure, is so small compare it with the rest of my tests that I do not care about. So what I measure I measure just the data read via each method - did not count the data or database delay, or any disk read or anything like that. Later on the image with the result I show that no disk activity exist on the measures See this image to see what really I measure and if this is correct Why I chose this kind of test Its simple, it's real, and it's near my real problem that I found the delay of subsonic 3 in real program with real data. Now lets tests the dals Start by see this image I have 4-5 calls on every method, the one after the other. The results are. For a loop of 100 times, ask for 5 Rows, one not exist, approximatively.. Simple adonet:81ms SubSonic 2 :210ms linq2sql :1.70sec linq2sql using CompiledQuery.Compile :239ms Subsonic 3 :15.00sec (wow - extreme slow) The project http://www.planethost.gr/DalSpeedTests.rar Can any one confirm this benchmark, or make any optimizations to help me out ? Optimizing What I really ask here is if some one can now any trick how to optimize the DALs, not by changing the test code, but by changing the code and the settings on each dal. For example... Optimizing Linq2SQL I start search how to optimize Linq2sql and found this article, and maybe more exist. Finally I make the tricks from that page to run, and optimize the code using them all. The speed was near 1.50sec from 1.70.... big improvement, but still slow. Then I found a different way - same idea article, and wow ! the speed is blow up. Using this trick with CompiledQuery.Compile, the time from 1.5sec is now 239ms. Here is the code for the precompiled... I post them on subsonic group but they ignore the problem, they say that everything is fast... Here is some capture of my profiling and delay points inside subsonic source code I have end up that subsonic3 make more call on the structure of the database rather than on data itself. Needs to reconsider the hole way of asking for data, and follow the subsonic2 idea if this is possible. Try to make precompile to subsonic 3 like I did in linq2Sql but fail for the moment... Optimizing SubSonic 2 After I discover that subsonic 3 is extreme slow, I start my checks on subsonic 2 - that I have never done before believing that is fast. (and it is) So its come up with some points that can be faster. For example there are many loops like this ones that actually is slow because of string manipulation and compares inside the loop. I must say to you that this code called million of times ! on a period of few minutes ! of data asking from the program. On small amount of tables and small fields maybe this is not a big think for some people, but on large amount of tables, the delay is even more. So I decide and optimize the subsonic 2 by my self, by replacing the string compares, with number compares! Simple. I do that almost on every point that profiler say that is slow. I change also all small points that can be even a little faster, and disable some not so used thinks. The results, 5% faster on NorthWind database, near 20% faster on my database with 250 tables. That is count with 500ms less in 10 seconds process on northwind, 100ms faster on my database on 500ms process time. I do not have captures to show you for that because I have made them with different code, different time, and track them down on paper. Anyway this is my story and my question on all that, what else do you know to make them even faster... For this measures I have use Subsonic 2.2 optimized by me, Subsonic 3.0.0.3 a little optimized by me, and Dot.Net 3.5

  Hi, I am using the liveTwitter plugin The problem is that I need to stop the plugin from hitting the Twitter api. According to the documentation I need to do this $("#tab1 .container_twitter_status").each(function(){ this.twitter.stop(); }); Already, the each does not make sense on an id and what does this refer to? Anyway, I get an undefined error. • Please help to clean up my RoR development environment

  I started RoR development a few months ago, and being new to Mac... Time flies and now I have a lot different ruby versions, rails versions and gems versions located everywhere......And currently I installed rvm and things got even worst, all things messed! And so I started want to clean all things and use rvm again! I want to uninstall all gems, all rails, and all ruby versions, except the system's default one (the very old one born with the mac). Or any other better solutions or suggestions!?   I'm working on strengthening my F#-fu and decided to tackle the Facebook Hacker Cup Double Squares problem. I'm having some problems with the run-time and was wondering if anyone could help me figure out why it is so much slower than my C# equivalent. There's a good description from another post; Source: Facebook Hacker Cup Qualification Round 2011 A double-square number is an integer X which can be expressed as the sum of two perfect squares. For example, 10 is a double-square because 10 = 3^2 + 1^2. Given X, how can we determine the number of ways in which it can be written as the sum of two squares? For example, 10 can only be written as 3^2 + 1^2 (we don't count 1^2 + 3^2 as being different). On the other hand, 25 can be written as 5^2 + 0^2 or as 4^2 + 3^2. You need to solve this problem for 0 = X = 2,147,483,647. Examples: 10 = 1 25 = 2 3 = 0 0 = 1 1 = 1 My basic strategy (which I'm open to critique on) is to; Create a dictionary (for memoize) of the input numbers initialzed to 0 Get the largest number (LN) and pass it to count/memo function Get the LN square root as int Calculate squares for all numbers 0 to LN and store in dict Sum squares for non repeat combinations of numbers from 0 to LN If sum is in memo dict, add 1 to memo Finally, output the counts of the original numbers.
