• how to get started with a game engine [closed]

  I'm a 3rd year Computer Science student and I would like to get started with building a game engine or at least tinkering with making one. I am curious if there are any good resources to use to get started. I get the idea behind different pieces in the engine, but I'm not really sure about how they fit together. Is there anything out there to help teach me the skeleton of a game engine? So far I've been playing with the idea of a game engine that uses modules built in a circular linked list so that each can do it's computing and then pass move to the next piece of the engine to work.

• PC noisy due to high load - why?

  I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer.But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

  I want to copy some data from another machine to a local computer on a regular basis. At the moment I'm researching different solutions and try to find the one which fits best. Basically I want to open a network connection (or use an existing one), make a VPN connection and start a rsync process. This should be done on every logout of my desktop session or on shutdown. One possible solution might be to somehow intercept the Unity shutdown and execute a script. So is there a possibility to execute a script on GNOME/Unity shutdown? • Ubuntu 12.04 USB wireless not recognized

  I have searched for awhile now for ways to fix my problem but have come up with nothing. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop computer. I am unable to find the Enable Wireless button in the network area. It just doesn't appear. Everything else works on my laptop. I believe it's the drivers for my USB network adapter. I also have no way of using a wired connection at the moment. Thanks for any help!

• Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

  I apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate question for this SE. A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. I realize this is a rather open-ended question but any direction is appreciated.

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • Linux Programmer moving to Windows

  I am a fairly proficient Linux programmer. I have been coding in Linux for 4 years, for both personal reasons and for profit. During those 4 years I have not even owned a computer running the Windows operating system. I am looking to expand my horizons into Windows programming, but am finding myself overwhelmed with the lack of what I perceive to be standardization. I feel as though different compilers follow different conventions, and all of the worthwhile IDEs cost money. Whats worse is that so many of the Tutorials are just terrible. If anyone else has taken the switch from Linux to Windows programming, what was the most helpful. What are the most straightforward IDEs and tutorials for using the API. I am looking to do mainly C and C++ development, along with some x86. I have found MASM primarily suits my needs for the latter.

• How can I fix my problems with fonts in Firefox?

  Ever since I reinstalled Ubuntu a few hours ago, I've experienced major visual artifacts with smaller font sizes in Firefox. The fonts end up looking like this: Or even like this: This only occurs in Firefox; other applications are unaffected. • How can I manage keyboard shortcuts in 11.10 Oneric?

  In 10.04, I've had a keyboard shortcut defined via it's keyboard settings applet. Recently I have upgraded to 11.10 (I use gnome-classic). This shortcut still works, but I can't find it in System Setting's Keyboard applet. This means I don't know how to disable it. Not that it bothers me too much (now, at least), but not being able to control my own computer doesn't seem very pleasant. Where does Ubuntu store my keyboard shortcuts? BTW, I do not use compiz, and I can't find my shortcut in gconf either.

• Failed Update & Mouse Issues

  I`m using my gfs computer - but I do have Ubuntu 11.10 up and running well to some degree. Still need to work out some bugs but not quite sure how to do that. My mouse is only somewhat responsive - cursor moves, and able to click on things but still unable to do a double click function. Left mouse button still not working at all. Tried running updates but it keeps coming up synaptic error. Not sure what that means. I have read that some people have done reinstalls of Ubuntu and it corrected the problems - not sure if that could work. Comments would be appreciated. Installed Ubuntu 11.10 but thinking of trying to wipe the system to do a fresh install can someone tell me how I get back to the Ubuntu installation menu. Wondering if gnome may need to be reset but not sure.

After I installed the COD Black Ops trough Wine Playonlinux and successfully installed, and I play the game and then appear message "Shader Model 3.0 not available". I have installed ATI driver 11.8 when I trying this game. And then I'm trying to install the driver from menu "System Administration Additional Driver, it doesn't work. I cannot log in, in the screen appear only the text for log in. And then I uninstall it trough recovery mode. And then I download ATI driver 11.11 from official ATI/AMD website, and then I restart my computer and my screen appearing only text again. I'm using Ubuntu (Ultimate Edition) 11.04. How to overcome this problem?

• Lexmark X7170 shows documents as printed when they haven't

  I made the move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu not dual booting because I have decided to quit gaming to spare more time for my studies. I just needed an OS for browsing the web and word processing etc. After I installed Ubuntu I installed the AMD GPU drivers, after which I clicked on the little printer icon, selected add printer and it found the drivers for the Lexmark 7000 series and I installed them. Now my problem is when I print something from Writer it processes it thinks its completed it, when in fact it hasn't printed anything. I tried printing a test page but it was stuck on processing for 5 minutes. I have restarted my computer and turned the printer on and off. I'm running 64bit if that changes anything.

  I connected usb serial cable from printer to computer. The drivers has been installed automatically. I printed the test page - it was printed. I tryed to print an image - it stays with status - processing... and dont work. Test page also cant be printed. What a problem? • If a variable has getter and setter, should it be public?

  I am an about to graduate Computer Science student so probably this is a stupid question. If I have a class with a variable that is private and the class have getter and setter for that variable. Why don't make that variable public? The only case I think you have to use getters and setters is if you need to do some operation besides the set or the get.   The firm I work at keeps a copy of the compiled source code on production. So basically on our Production server, we have two folders: ProductionServer\SourceCode\ ProductionServer\SourceCodeRollback\ The Rollback folder always contains one version older code. This is done so that on deployment nights, if something is wrong with the new code, the deployer(who is not familiar with source control software) has the older version to revert back to. My question is: Is there an official computer science term/nomenclature for the Rollback folder? Or is "Rollback" itself the official term?

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects?

  I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

• Chromium and Google Chrome downloading

  Well, I have sincerely enjoyed having Google Chrome on my linux machine, and have never had any problems until recently. I found that Google Chrome will simply not allow redirected downloads to start. I can download from direct links, but not pages that redirect and "Start in 3 seconds..." I immediately assumed it was the webpage itself, so I refreshed many times. I then restarted the browser, and after another failed attempt, my computer. After that point, I suspected my internet provider was to blame. I tried the redirection link in an alternative browser (Midori), and it worked perfectly fine. I decided it must be the version of Chrome that Google put out, so I quickly installed Chromium, and to my dismay, ran across the same problem. I can live with copying and pasting the url into Midori for redirected links, but I'd like the convenience of staying in my main browser. Thank you for any advice in advance. c:

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

• How can I customize my bootloader to make it prettier?

  I hate how when I turn on the computer it just (after the hp logo, which I hate having also), shows white text on a black background. I'm wondering if there's easy ways to customize this (I'm choosing between Windows 7 and two separate Ubuntu 10.10 installs). I've read a little about some complicated ways to do this, but is there not some simpler ways by installing a package on ubuntu or something? I don't want to hack a bunch of code together to get a simple effect. I'm hoping for actual images and having like the windows 7 logo and ubuntu logo to choose from. Ideas?
