• Cinema4D for game development tutorials anyone ?

  Hi, I started to learn Cinema 4D. I've noticed it's really easy to use for motion graphics, but I want to use it for modeling for games/realtime 3d engines. Before I used 3dsmax and it was easy to estimate how a model would look/behave in a 3d engine. The two main things I did was displaying Polygon triangles and displaying the Polygon Count. I've found the Total Polygons tick in HUD settings in Cinema 4D, but I can't find any display mode that will show triangles. Is there there a way to display triangle faces/not quads in Cinema4D ? If so how ? There is a Triangulate function, but I'd rather not Triangulate/Untriangulate all the time, especially since it's converting back and forth between the two doesn't always produce the same result.

• Intel site says VT-x is supported on my CPU, but tests say otherwise

  I have a laptop with an Intel 2nd Gen. i7-2729QM (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/) and the Intel site says that it supports VT-x, but I've downloaded the Intel Processor Identification Utility (http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/sb/CS-014921.htm) and the test says that my CPU does not have VT-x. There is no option in my BIOS that allows me to enable/disable VT-x. I researched my laptop model (SAGER NP8170) and most forums say that it's enabled by default and there's no option in the BIOS. So assuming that's true, what gives? I also downloaded another tool called SecurAble from GRC and it also says that my CPU doesn't support VT-x. VirtualBox also says that my CPU does not support virtualization. My mind is boggled by why it says on the Intel site that my CPU supports VT-x but all other tests show otherwise. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks in advance.

• Asus EEE PC 1005HA (XP Home) refuses to connect to Virgin Mobile MiFi

  My client has an Asus EEE PC model 1005HA, and we're attempting to connect it to the WiFi network created by a VirginMobile MiFi unit. They also have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard that has absolutely no issue connecting to the MiFi. The specific symptom is that the netbook fails to lease an IP address from the MiFi unit. I supply the 12-digit numerical password (WPA) to the netbook, it throws a 'waiting for network' dialog with an indeterminate progress indicator, and then times out. Update: We've determined that this behavior has stopped when the EEE PC and the MiFi unit were taken out of the client's home, and to a different home that didn't have an existing wifi network. Similarly, when taken to a third location that didn't have wifi, the EEE PC and MiFi got along swimmingly. My current theory is that the existing wifi networks and the wifi leg of the MiFi unit are on the same channel and competing with one another. Perhaps the MacBook Pro has the capability to overcome this interference, while the EEE PC doesn't.

• Wrong screen resolution with HDMI output to HDTV

  I own an HDTV with a native resolution of 1360x768. Sometimes I plug in my laptop to watch movies, and I used to do it with a VGA cable. I've had no problem setting the laptop to the TV native resolution with the VGA cable (1360x768). Having acquired an HDMI cable recently, I can't go past 1280x720, and if I do, the TV displays "invalid format". At 1280x720, the image is viewable but not centered, so for example I can't see the windows taskbar or titlebars. I've tried both cables (VGA and HDMI) with the same settings: Laptop's display turned off and trying to set the Tv's native resolution. What could I try to fix this issue? Could it be a faulty cable? (I'm using a Thinkpad with Windows 7) EDIT: My graphics adapter appears listed as Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Searching for my laptop's model yields Intel GMA 4500MHD as the graphic card) I'm downloading a driver update from Intel's website. I'll report my progress when I check its behavior tomorrow.

• How would one run a task sequence within a task sequence in SCCM 2012 SP1

  A Shining Example: Inside all of my task sequences I have a group that installs driver packages conditionally based on computer model: And of course, this list does nothing but grow. The fact that it grows isn't a big deal, what is a big deal is that every time it changes I have to manually copy and paste those changes across every task sequence I have, which of course leaves huge room for human error. The same goes for other groups of tasks that are common across task sequences. Looking for a solution where I could centrally manage these tasks, be it link other task sequences to a group within another task sequence, or create a separate task sequence and link to that. I came across a solution by John Marcum (SCCM MVP) that mentioned this ability, but this was a while ago and I can't find the link to it anymore to see if it's even still being updated/maintained, but I'm looking for more of a free solution, or even using Powershell or the ConfigMgr SDK is fine with me, I'm no stranger to either. • Is there a USB ethernet (wired) adapter that is really compatible with Windows 7 64-bit?

  I've checked the Windows 7 compatibility site, and it lists a fair few USB ethernet (wired, not wireless) adapters that should work with Windows 7 64-bit. However, whenever I Google for the model number and Windows 7 64-bit, there's many forum posts claiming that the devices actually don't work with 64-bit (but do work with 32-bit). I've actually also found this with the LUPO USB ethernet adapter; works with 32-bit win7, but not 64-bit (no drivers available). So is there anyone out there who is 100% certain, and have actually used successfully, a 64-bit win7 capable USB ethernet adapter?

• What is the fastest CPU my laptop can support?

  I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop and would like to speed up compile times on it. I have confirmed that it is, indeed, the processor time that is the bottleneck. How can I tell what processors are compatible with the motherboard to pick the best available? I run dual boot Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7. lshw tells me that my motherboard is OHN338 from Dell, Inc. If anyone has a generic solution, i.e. "For motherboard X, here is how you find out what processors are supported," that would be make this question much more useful to future visitors. But if you also know of a way to find out specific to my model, that would be great as well.

• How to connect to my US network overseas via VPN?

  I purchased an Apple TV for my parents and I have a netflix account. My parents live overseas, and I was wondering if they could use my account to get it to work. I read that it won't work unless you use proxies or a VPN, so I was wondering if its possible for me to setup a VPN to my network in the US instead of paying a service like StrongVPN? Setup: Router in US - Airport Extreme Router abroad - D-link (not sure of model) I know that the AppleTV doesn't have a built-in VPN client, maybe eventually when its jailbroken there will be an app, but as of now I'll have to use the routers right? Any other ideas are welcome as well!

• Monitoring User Login time

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine. I would like to be able to see how long each of the polices are taking to load (if possable split user and computer) and any other info that might help (services starting etc) I changed the userenvdebuglevel reg option to generate the userenv.log file but it did'nt contain very much info Thanks Luke

• Render a 3D image as a 2D vector image

  Is there any software that will take a 3d model (in any format) and allow you to render it as a 2D vector image (preferable as either an .SVG or .PDF)? My intention is to render LEGO building instructions this way. While there are many tools that let you view them or generate nice, rasterized output, I'd really like to be able to generate vectorized output. Textures are not needed, and hidden line removal may not be needed. I could use a tool that works on any platform (although my preference is OS X, Linux, then Windows). Open source is preferred. If no one knows of a tool that does this, does anyone have a good recommendation of something to hack on and add a feature to output via Cairo?

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4 GHz). The Wi-Fi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the Linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without any issues. • VM Build XML file fails to validate against OVF 1.0 schema

  For our product, we were trying to generate VM / vApp build XML from java code. For this purpose, we were using XML Beans. When we tried to generate JAVA classes for OVF envelope for 0.9 (ovf-envelope.xsd in schemas/ovf) it was successful. However these schemas does not allow us to add IPassignment section which is available in OVF 1.0. When we tried to compile 1.0 schema (ovfenv-vmware.xsd in schemas/ovf1.0.0e/vmware folder), we get validation errors. When we loaded this schema in schema editor we could see some validation errors. First error we saw was following: When we loaded ovfenv-vmware.xsd in XMLspy we could see following validation error in dsp8027.xsd - "cos-nonambig: makes the content model non-deterministic against . Possible causes: name equality, overlapping occurrence or substitution groups." Same error was also thrown by xmlbean while generating java classes from ovfenv-vmware.xsd. Is there any workaround for this problem?

• Computer never connects to the internet automatically on startup?

  I have my Windows Vista laptop connected directly to the router via an ethernet cable, and every time I switch the computer on, the computer cannot connect to the internet. It comes up as limited or no connectivity, I am assuming because it has not been assigned an IP address by the router - not too sure if this is right. The problem is usually fixed either by performing a repair through the networking control panel or removing and re-inserting the ethernet cable. It will also connect without doing any of these if the computer is left idle for about 20 minutes. It will connect fine wirelessly without the need for any of this, however I would prefer to connect via the cable. Any ideas how I can fix this? I have replaced the ethernet cable and router already (identical model) but these haven't helped. Thanks for any help on this.

• What is the method to reset the Planar 1910m monitor?

  My monitor (a Planar, apparently model number PL1910M) is not working. (It is flashing a green / orange sequence which I believe to be an error code. The sequence, in case it helps consists of orange and green three times quickly followed by a longer orange, then another green followed by a long period where both colors appear to be present). I vaguely recall a co-worker suffering from a similar problem, and our IT department "resetting" the monitor by holding down a certain set of keys as they apply power. Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

I do a lot of development work, i havent got a second monitor to test it yes but i know there can be problems. I would like to have a monitor connected on my VGA and on my HDMI so two external monitors and notebooks monitor. Would this be viable ?

• Asus laptop not retaining Aero theme when unplugged

  The problem i'm having occurs when i unplug my laptop, it disregards several elements of my theme. The taskbar becomes unlocked. My desktop background is turned white. The transparency on my windows goes away. I can fix these things by running the Aero trouble shooting utility, which mentions something about the color bit depth These are these specs for the computer: Asus Laptop / Intel® Pentium® Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory Model: X54H-BD3MA SKU: 4005394 I'm sure there are duplicates of this, just not sure whick one refers to me. • NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

  I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

• How to add addtional disks to a Windows 2008 KVM based Guest?

  I have a Win 2008 KVM based guest VM running on a Ubuntu 10 host. It is a raw image of 22G. I want to add a "data" drive which would show up as "D:\" drive on the guest. I first created a raw image using: qemu-img create -f raw ~/vmdisk2.img 50G Then, tried attaching it using virsh attach-disk. When that did not work, I tried editing the xml file of the VM directly. Both did not seem to work. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to do this and what the best practice is. I want to keep the base image small, so that I can clone it (hopefully) and then attach necessary storage based on the application at hand. • Logitech Revue - tv picture extends too far off left/right side of tv?

  Hi, I got a logitech revue (for google tv). I hooked it up, works ok, but the picture is not fitting horizontally in my hdtv. The hdtv is a Sony Bravia, 2010 model. The tv picture is fitting vertically just fine, but it looks like the left and right ends of the picture extend way off farther than they should be. In other words, it looks like the picture is starting about 4 inches to the left of the left side of the tv, and extends 4 inches past the right edge of the tv. I know in menu - settings you have an option to "maximize" your picture, which works for the vertical directions, but the horizontal directions seem convinced that they're maximized properly and I cannot adjust. Any help here? Thanks

• H.264 Pricing confusion

  not sure if this is the right place but there seems to be other H.264 questions here, if not please point me to the right place! I am taking uploaded content and encoding it to H.264, I'm confused about the pricing though. Do I have to pay to host and stream this video on my server (in Ireland). I've tried looking around google but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. Some countries have exceptions, some pay $2500. What kind of information should I be looking at to understand the pricing model more? Thanks.

• unstable / variating sound level (volume) within same song / clip

  Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

• Comunication from Server to Client + Client LAN

  I'm having some trouble with some network setup. I've tried OpenVPN, SocialVPN, Hamachi, still it is not working. This is my setup: Server A: NIC 1 with internet public address, NIC 2 to LAN Client B PC: NIC 1 (192.168.10.2) connects to router 192.168.10.1 Client B Device: 192.168.10.3 (Configured via software, can't do much here) Problem: Server A must connect to cliente device B. (I can install software needed at Client B PC). However... I can't change the router to some model with VPN like Draytek or Cisco :( OpenVPN fails at bridging, PC B can ping Server A, but Server A can't ping Device B, only PC B. What else can I do?!?!?

• Burn iTunes playlist to Audio Image

  I have Snow Leopard on an early model MacBook Pro. The CD Drive has been giving me fits the last few months -- I stick a blank CD in it, and it claims it's bad and spits it out. I can go through a pile of brand-new CD's and it will choose 1 out of 7 that it wants to use, even though all the CD's come from the same package. The rejected CD's work fine on a Linux machine I have. I need to burn an audio CD from iTunes and my thought was: Burn playlist to audio CD Image file (Red Book image?) Copy ISO file to Linux Machine Use Linux machine to burn audio image to a CD But looking around, it doesn't seem that iTunes on OSX will support this. I was wondering if anyone else has accomplished this.

• Logfile software for making querys, extracting and other operations

  I have written an app that connects to a server IIS 6 to retrieve information. When doing this i have collected data (phone model etc) and send it to the server with a regular GET HTTP call like this: http://www.myserver.com/getData.php?phonemodel=userphone&appversion=2&id=20 This is logged in the IIS logfiles. I thought of writing my own parser for log files. But why invent the wheel? I´m looking for a software that can read the IIS 6 logfiles. I would like it to be able to do: Extraction - Extract all lines that contains: www.myserver.com/getData Filtering - View all lines where http-code is not 200 Queries - View all lines where phonemodel=iphone Any tips on free software that can help me with this? • VMware ESX 3.5 Host Health shown as unknown

  I have an ESX 3.5 update 5 cluster of five host servers, all fully patched as of this Friday. Today I noticed that one of the servers has the Hardware Health status as unknown in Virtual Center Infrastructure Client. When I look at the Health Status view under configuration for that host, all the items are status Unknown. The server is exactly the same configuration as the others - same model (HP DL360 G5), memory, NICs etc. I have tried restarting the management service with service mgmt-vmware restart but this has not resolved the issue. Asides from this, I am not seeing any issues with the cluster - however, I hate having a blind spot like this. Any ideas?
