• How can the shared hosting server provide unlimited physical subdomains as opposed to unlimited virtual subdomains?

  Some hosting companies offer unlimited subdomains. There are two kind of subdomains: physical subdomains and virtual subdomains. A physical subdomains has its own site directory rather than being nested inside the site directory of its parent domain. A virtual subdomain site directory, on the other hand, is nested inside the site directory of its parent domain. I wonder how can the shared hosting company provide unlimited (theoritically) physical subdomains? In my understanding, each physical subdomain represents a new site (rather than a new application or virtual directory) in IIS. Please correct me if my mental model is wrong.

• How to make a quiet laptop ? [closed]

  Most modern laptops have very noisy fans. I am looking for a quiet laptop or a small stationary computer which has all its hardware built in a display. Most tasks will be pdf/docs processing, real-time audio processing, web-surfing and skype video chats. Certainly, there is no any fan-less model today; but maybe some of the existed laptops do not switch on their fans so often or implement different solutions? For example, an iPad has no fan at all and it is fast enough for my needs, but it has no normal operating system, so I can't use it for anything but audio chats and web-surfing. Or maybe I can buy a laptop and tweak it to make it absolutely noiseless? Can you recommend me any solution please? Thanks in advance!

  I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

• Can I connect my ipod's earphones to my computer?

  My computer (recent model Dell z600) has 2 input devices on the front of the computer, 1 has an icon of headphones and the other is a Mic icon. When I plugin my earphones to the input device that has the headphones, and play some sound I don't hear anything from my earphones (sounds comes from built in speakers). I know when I plugin a USB headphone set, it switches over to those on but for some reason my earphones are not being picked up. Is it not compatible? • Can't run monitor at native 1080p resolution on Windows 7

  I have a 24" ViewSonic VX2453 monitor that supports 1920x1080p, connected using HDMI. However at that resolution, the desktop goes off the screen. Using the Nvidia control panel, I have to set it to a custom resolution of 1804x1014 to display correctly. The monitor has its drivers properly installed (the correct model name shows up in control panel after installing the drivers), and I'm running 64 bit Win7 Ultimate. I have a GeForce 560 Ti card, if that helps. Why does this happen?

  I have Western Digital My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive with USB3 and Model:WDBACY5000ABK-EESN. Until about two or three months ago when I connected that to My Laptop USB3 port, that worked very well. But now when I'm connecting that to My device, The system does not detect any Hard Drives. When plug in the USB2 port is working properly. I connected that to another Laptop whit USB3 port but I had the same problem. I tested My Laptop port with a Flash Memory by USB3 and ports were healthy and I'm sure they are working. For this issue, I changed the windows, but it still did not work. What can I do? • Recover Bios HP DV9700T windows 7 64

  I downloaded the latest DV9700t bios (.59) and ran the update tool in windows 7 64. This seemed to go ok and did the usual system will shutdown in 10 seconds dialog. Updon the reboot nothing happens I get no BIOS screen or anything so I think the bios update went wrong. Which I am annoyed about I have never known a bios update to fail before and lots of people on the internet seem to have had the same problem with the same model. There is a way to recover apparently using crisdisk utility and creating a bootable usb key then holding win+b at power on, unfortunately the utility to make the disk doesn't seem to work in 64 bit versions of windows, the only type I have easy access to. Anyone know a way to create the boot disk in 64?

  When I asked this question using games as the example (hoping it would be more likely to have been done), it was closed as being off topic so let me ask it this way... Has anyone used a spreadsheet to model a complex, changeable system (something like crowd behaviour, weather systems, a closed ecology, evolution or whatever) and if so, can you point me at it? I'm hoping for a normal (albeit complex) spreadsheet using the spready's inbuilt formulae and functions rather than something specially coded. I'm also after something where it's possible to change the variables and see the changed outcome - perhaps the variables change using random numbers or the like.

• Server drives: 2.5" SCSI less reliable than 3.5" ?

  Just had an HP 2.5" SAS 10k drive fail on a RAID5 array after about 2.5 years. It made me wonder if this was a fluke or an indication that 2.5" drives are less reliable than 3.5" SAS drives. I've had many 3.5" SAS drives running for many years without any issues (knock on wood). I would think that smaller drives would generate less heat and therefore be more reliable, but couldn't find any evidence of this. I realize all drives will eventually fail and that it's a crap shoot with any particular model, but was hoping someone could point out some related studies or comment on the SCSI drive sizes they've found to be most reliable in servers. • TextPad printing to incorrect printer

  I have tried to find an answer on Google, and searched SU, but have not found anything on this particular issue. I Looked for a setting in the TextPad menu and didn't see anything that seemed relevant. I have 2 networked printers that are the same model. (HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 5) One is near me and the other is across the building. The one near me is my default. It seems that TextPad remembers the last printer used and defaults to it rather than printing to the system default, so when I force it to print to my default printer once, the problem is solved until I decide to print to the other printer for some reason. If I don't remember the problem, and specifically print a job to the nearby printer to correct it, I'll end up either wasting paper or wasting trips across the building to pick up printjobs that got printed there by accident. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Is there a solution?

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? I have : Motheboard : intel Chipset Model - DH61WWAAG23116-303 Processor : Intel Core i3 3.20 Ghz RAM : Zion 4 gb DDR3 HDD : 1 tb GRAPHICS : 2 gb NVIDIA GeForce GT-610 CABINET : Frontech Rock OS : Win 7 32 Bit

• 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0? • COUNTIFS over multiple worksheets

  I am trying to make COUNTIFS go across two worksheets in the same excel file (Final Driver Forecast Model), just on different tabs. I need it to count if a driver returns between a certain time, then to put a 1 in that time slot. For example if a driver returns at 2:30 p.m. on the 27th, then the formula will put in a 1 in the July 27th slot from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. I have tried two different formulas the first is =COUNTIF3D(Bid Sheet '[1]Bid Sheet 1'!O4:O110,">="&B76,O4:O110,"<="&C76) This is looking at the worksheet called Bid Sheet 1 and the column O4 through O110 and deciding if the time fits in the time slot of B76 00:00 (12 a.m.) and C 76 2:00 a.m. The second formula I tried to do the exact same thing =COUNTIF3D(O4:O110,">="B76,O4:O110,"<="&C76,"FinalDriverForecastModel',Bid Sheet 1") Neither is working and they both give me #NAME? when I hit enter......What am I doing wrong?

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from WiFi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4GHz). The WiFi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without issue. The problem also seemingly becomes more pronounced after midnight. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

• Reinstall Windows on mass computers

  At work there are about 40 DELL PC's - half of them are Windows Vista and other half are Windows 7. Some of the DELL PC's are 220s and 230s model. If I want to re-install Windows then I can use a Recovery/Recovery disk on any Dell PC's (220s or 230s). It take too long to complete the setup, for example - after re installing the Windows then I need to install the drivers, update windows, install IE9, create default users account and so on. It take about 3 hour to complete setup! I am looking for a solution Where I can create an Image of windows (with driver and completed setup) and then I use same Image it on any PC's at work? If one of the PC need reinstalling - I would like to reinstall via network (LAN) by grabbing the Image? Is there something that before booting into windows - computer check something via network which can download the Image?

• Wireless range extender throughput extremely slow.

  I've got a Belkin 54G router connected to the internet, and a Belkin range extender model F5D7132. I can get the range extender connected to the parent router SSID no problem, in repeater mode as opposed to access point mode. My Windows 7 laptop connects to the extender, which has a different SSID, and it connects with the full 5 bars. The issue is that when going through the extender internet performance is murderously slow, even getting the config pages of the extender or router is bad. When I connect directly to the router, all is well.

  Now that Samba 4 has finally been released we find ourselves in new position of having a choice of of either upgrading our Samba 3 domain to either a Samba 4 domain on Linux or a Windows AD domain on Windows 2012. Given that we are equally expert at managing Windows and Linux servers, is there any reason not to use Samba 4 over AD on Windows; specifically: Are there functional differences from a Windows/OS X client perspective? Are there issues with other services that use AD, such as storage appliances that use AD/Kerberos for authentication/authorisation. Will the Microsoft "System Centre" suite of tools and other similar products work seamlessly? How will Samba 4 handle AD's Multimaster DC model and FMSO roles. Are there any other issues to be aware of, such as vendor support?

  I am building a new desktop PC and I want to have full disk encryption on it. TrueCrypt doesn't support UEFI as of now. Are there still recent motherboards out there without UEFI ? I didn't find any list and I am afraid that I will have to study each potential candidate's technical sheet before purchase. I want to buy 2 or 3 of the same model to be future proof. • How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

  I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

• Sharepoint 2007 reset permission inheritance

  I have this SharePoint 2007 document library which has several levels of folders and files. Some folders in the middle of the hierarchy do not inherit permissions from their parents and have their unique permissions defined. It is a huge library and there are many folders like this. I am currently changing the permission model of my library and I want to reset all those unique permissions and have all of them inherit permissions from the library root. (Something like "Replace child object permissions" checkbox available in windows files system security window) If this is not possible, seeing a list of folders that have their unique permissions defined would also do.
