• Which shopping cart / ecommerce platform to choose?

  I need to build an ecommerce website within a tight budget and schedule. Of course, I have never done that before, so I have googled out what my solutions are and I have concluded that the following were not valid candidates anymore : Magento : Steep learning curve osCommerce : old, bad design, buggy and not user-friendly Zencart, CRE Loaded, CubeCart : based on osCommerce Virtuemart, uberCart, eCart : based on CMS (Joomal, Drupal, WordPress) that is not necessary for my use-case So I finally narrowed down my choices to these solutions : PrestaShop : easy-to-use, great templating engine (smarty) but many modules are not free buy yet indispensable OpenCart : security issues and not a great support from the main developer. See here and here. So, as you can see, I am a little bit confused and if you can help me choosing an easy-to-use, lightweight and cheap (not-necessarily free) ecommerce solution, I would really appreciate. By the way, I am a Java/Grails programmer but I am also familiar with PHP and .NET. (not with Python or Ruby/Rails) EDIT: It seems that this question is more appropriate for the Webmaster StackExchange site. So please move this question to where it belongs (I cannot do that) instead of downvoting it. • Internet Dropping?!

  I have a virtual DC running DNS and Routing and Remote Access, that routes ALL workstations Internet traffic out to the Internet, this works fine but noticed that the Internet drops occasionally. I've checked with our service provider (Managed Communications) and they are adamant that it's not their fault. The Internet drops seem to affect everyone. We also have a server configured to use the same Internet service on a different network over a site-to-site VPN connection which also suffers from packet drops. I've spoken to Cisco and have done many tests with Cisco and they believe the problem is down to the ISP. I'm wondering if it's a DNS issue, as the Internet service uses OpenDNS. Any ideas?

• What does your Lisp workflow look like?

  I'm learning Lisp at the moment, coming from a language progression that is Locomotive BASIC - Z80 Assembler - Pascal - C - Perl - C# - Ruby. My approach is to simultaneously: write a simple web-scraper using SBCL, QuickLisp, closure-html, and drakma watch the SICP lectures I think this is working well; I'm developing good 'Lisp goggles', in that I can now read Lisp reasonably easily. I'm also getting a feel for how the Lisp ecosystem works, e.g. Quicklisp for dependencies. What I'm really missing, though, is a sense of how a seasoned Lisper actually works. When I'm coding for .NET, I have Visual Studio set up with ReSharper and VisualSVN. I write tests, I implement, I refactor, I commit. Then when I'm done enough of that to complete a story, I write some AUATs. Then I kick off a Release build on TeamCity to push the new functionality out to the customer for testing & hopefully approval. If it's an app that needs an installer, I use either WiX or InnoSetup, obviously building the installer through the CI system. So, my question is: as an experienced Lisper, what does your workflow look like? Do you work mostly in the REPL, or in the editor? How do you do unit tests? Continuous integration? Packaging & deployment? When you sit down at your desk, steaming mug of coffee to one side and a framed photo of John McCarthy to the other, what is it that you do? Currently, I feel like I am getting to grips with Lisp coding, but not Lisp development ...

• Should a sysadmin contractor charge overtime for off-peak hours?

  This is not necessarily a server-related question, but more of a system admin question that I think would related to many on SF. I'm doing Sysadmin/IT consulting for a small company. I only work about 3 days a week for them on average. If a server goes down or something like that during off hours (nights, weekends, 3am, etc) and they need it fixed during those time periods, should I be charging overtime for that? I would I not be justified in charging overtime until I've logged 40 hours for the week? Perhaps calling it overtime isn't the best name. I guess maybe its better to call it an off-peak hourly rate. Anyways I just was curious what other consultants did in these circumstances.

• Keyboard freezes / stuck if a key pressed repeatedly

  I use Acer 4530. This problem has happened long since Ubuntu 10.10 and now that I use 11.04 dual booted with Linux Mint 10. Everytime I press one key repeatedly, like when I read a long article in a website/ebook or when I play games which required me to press arrow keys repeatedly, it would randomly freeze. That is, whatever I press on keyboard has no effect, and that also happens with touchpad. However, the USB mouse works just fine. I later found out that it's not actually freeze but more like it's like the key stuck. For example when I play tetris which I usually press w (down) button repeatedly, after some times it would freeze. And if I put the cursor in, say, browser's address bar, it would type "wwww....." infinitely. The only way I could fix it is by suspend the laptop, either by using mouse or by closing the lid. And instead of suspended, in that case the laptop would automatically wake up and everything will be fine. (Usually my laptop would wake up after suspended by pressing any key) It has happened since the first time I use Ubuntu, 10.10, and it also happens in Linux Mint 10, and until now in Ubuntu 11.04. It never happened when I use Windows, though. Anyone has ever encounter similar problem? Anyone know how to fix it permanently? UPDATE I just recently installed Windows 7 and Windows 8 Development Preview and both have similar symptoms. So I declare that this problem is not OS specific, probably hardware problem.

• Click and Drag from Clickpad stops working after a while 12.04

  I've got a Samsung Notebook (NP-QX412-S01AU) with a touchpad / clickpad. I'm running 12.04 Precise. When I first log into my computer, the touchpad behaves exactly as expected and desired. The longer I stay logged in, it slowly degrades. I'll try describe it. There are 3 ways of "dragging" on this clickpad: (Physical) click and hold with one finger, and drag around while still holding it down. All with one finger. (Physical) Click and hold with one finger, then with another finger drag around to move cursor. Double tap (not a physical click) and on the second tap, hold and drag. I most naturally use option 1, but here's how it works: When I first turn on, options 1, 2 and 3 all work. After a while, only options 2 and 3 work. Later still, only option 3 works. Restarting X causes all 3 to work again. I've compared the output of "synclient" in each of the states, and there was no difference. Anybody know what to look at? Or at the very least, a command I can run to "restart" the mouse driver without restarting X?

• Exchange can't send emails with attachments

  No one in our organization can send emails with attachments. Emails without attachments go through fine, but if an attachment is included, an error appears in the Server Failures folder under Sync Issues. The error is "The following message had an error and synchronization of it was skipped (0xc0090081)". We are using Symantec Mail Security, which we shut down to try to troubleshoot the problem, and now that fails to load. Any ideas as to what to check? I'm sorry I don't have more complete information, but I'm helping someone try to figure this out. I'm not the admin myself. Thanks.

• How does one rein in the complexities of web development ?

  I have been a server-side programmer for most of my career and have only recently started spending more time on web development. I am amazed at the number of things I need to master in order to write a decent web application. Just to list down a few tools/technologies I need to learn, Server side programming language (Java/JSP, ASP, PHP, Ruby or something else) A decent web framework (for any medium to big size application). HTML & CSS Javascript Javascript library (JQuery/ExtJS etc. primarily for AJAX). Good to know even if not necessary. At least a basic knowledge of web design - layouts, colors, fonts etc. A good understanding of web security. A good understanding of Performance/scalability issues. Testing, browser compatibility issues etc. The list goes on. So, my question to seasoned web developers is - How do you guys manage to learn and keep yourself updated on so many things? While developing a web application, how do you handle the complexities involved in these areas and yet manage to write an application that is well designed, user friendly, secure, performant and scalable. As a web developer, does one have to be a jack of all trades or should one specialize in one or two areas and leave the rest to other members of the team ?

• Ubuntu 11.10 and Mobility radeon HD 4570, 512MB can't find working drivers

  i'm pretty new to Linux and my new problem is ATI drivers. When i installed Ubuntu then i had black screen issue with the blinking in left upper corner, fixed it with F6 and set the "nolapic" mode, can boot only with "nolapic". Now the problem is the drivers. The suggested drivers, from the "Additional drivers" are not working. • Multiple instances of Intellitrace.exe process

  Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

• Does shutdown idle VMs improve the performance?

  Often our team members are coming to me with a compliant that their VMs are slow. Our team members suggested to shutdown some of the VMs temporarily and try to access the VM. But most cases that would not help. Assume that i have assigned 4 GB for and 2 CPUs for my VM. So ideally it should not face performance issue. As our ESXi 4.1 server has multiple VM in the same server (we have overcommited memory and CPU). Does shut down other VM really helps to improve performance or not? [Note : We are using ESXi 4.1 and our hardware is R710 server. We have more number of VMs in single server so we have overcommited memory.]

  I have a Server 2008 machine called OTTO I recently, by mistake, booted up an old machine, also called OTTO (the hardware was unstable, so the new one was set up to take it's place) I shut down the old machine, turned it off, and recycled it (it won't ever be back on) Now, whenever i try to log in to the real OTTO with the domain account (mydomain\Administrator) i get the following error: The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation What can I do to fix this? It doesn't appear in active directory any more I've added it, but I'm guessing this had no effect, due to a different SID I can log in as the local administrator however

• Mail.app Bug -- Keeps Showing Messages

  Hi, I'm running Mail.app on my Mac (Snow Leopard). Two GMail accounts are linked to it using POP. There is an annoying bug which causes certain messages from one of the account to show up in my Inbox. They are always messages I sent to a certain account, and are 6-7 messages from one thread. If I delete them, they just show up again if I restart Mail.app or switch to a different mailbox and back, although the number of messages goes down, until it reaches one, and goes back to six-seven. The only solution I have found is to delete the offending thread from within GMail, except that then another thread takes its place and starts annoying me. Any solution?

• Finding out if an IP address is static or dynamic?

  I run a large bulletin board and I get spammers every now and again. My moderation team does a good job filtering them out but every time I IP ban them they seem to come back (I'm pretty sure it's the same person on some occasions, as the post patterns are exactly the same as are the usernames) but I'm afraid to ban them by IP address every time. If they are on a dynamic IP address, I could be banning innocent users later down the line when they try to get to my forum through SERPs, but if I ban only via static IPs I know that I'm only banning that one person. So, is there a way to properly determine if an IP address is static or dynamic? Thanks.

• Can't get lines around table borders/cells [migrated]

  I have several web pages containing tables, for which I'd like to have line-borders around the tables and the cells. In fact, some of these pages existed for several years already, and rendered acceptly in IE6, IE7. We switched about 6 months ago to a completely different set of style sheets to change our site look and feel. We also switched to "modern" browsers such as IE8 (and because I couldn't stop Vista) to IE9. Now the borders don't render at all. I spent a day fighting with this about a month ago, and failed to fix it. It seemed that I could reduce the page down to just the barest table and IE8 would still not render the border. I think I decided IE8 was just buggy, but I'm not an HTML expert so it is more likely that I'm buggy. (I'm just getting back to this; I'll go see if I can find that reduced page). • Problems serving SVN over HTTPS on Ubuntu 10.04

  We've been experiencing some problems with our Subversion server after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to access a repository, regardless of client (I've tried git-svn and svn on Windows as well as svn on Ubuntu 10.04, from different computers and network locations), I get a 400 bad request. • Drupal 7 Advice Needed: "Portal" Creation

  Question: What is the best game plan for building what I want. I'm rebuilding the company intranet and am trying to get our "Portals" system re-created in Drupal. I'm trying to learn Panels, because thats what I think would do this, but I just can't seem to get it working. Menu at top, drop down lists for various webpages, tools, internal applications... and Department Portals. When you click on a department portal, you get the same menu at top... and on the main part of the page you have a menu on the left, with content on the right. Menu stays on the left, content loads next to it. Each Portal has its own menu and content (least of which is "Home"). Ultimately, I'd like to be able to say - users with role "Foo" can add/edit/delete Portal Bar. - Each Portal starts with a "Home" - Each Portal has its own Menu tree's. (Picture 2 above has a < ul for video tutorials that would be a second level menu. So more than one deep.) - Content on the right side of the portal should be flexible (Video, PDF via fileviewer, etc) - Portal Bar should have its own Folder to contain it's content. I'm trying to do this in Panels, but I can't seem to put the pieces together in my mind and in practice. I hope I'm making sense, because the dizzying array of stuff is killing me lol.

• Free DNS software with failover support?

  I'm looking for DNS software that can accomplish the following: Check health of all A records at set intervals If server is unresponsive after multiple successive checks, replace A record with a working server When a server is down, check it periodically. Once it's up, restore normal A records Here's an equivalent I thought of: Run DNS servers with very low TTL (minutes) Use a cron job to periodically query all webservers Use sed to replace A records if need be, and then restart DNS server I have a hard time believing there isn't already something that can accomplish the above. I'm not looking for a paid service, and I'm restricted to anything I can run with root access to a VPS. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

• Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Hi all, Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• How can I disable Ctrl+Shift+Arrow from causing my screen to flip?

  Windows 7 Home Premium, Catalyst Control Center. Without any apparent reason, after booting my PC, I got this little balloon "HD 4600 Drivers updated". I did not install any new cards or drivers or anything. But now, when I try to select an entire word by pressing Ctrl + Shift + ? / ? my screen flips left to right and upside down. Where can I disable this annoying shortcut? OR Any other way of selecting the entire word? There is no option for this in Catalyst Control Center.

• Architectural and Design Challenges with SOA

  With all of the hype about service oriented architecture (SOA) primarily through the use of web services, not much has been said about potential issues of using SOA in the design of an application. I am personally a fan of SOA, but it is not the solution for every application. Proper evaluation should be done on all requirements and use cases prior to deciding to go down the SOA road. It is important to consider how your application/service will handle the following perils as it executes. Example Challenges of SOA Network Connectivity Issues Handling Connectivity Issues Longer Processing/Transaction Times How many of us have had issues visiting our favorite web sites from time to time? The same issue will occur when using service based architecture especially if it is implemented using web services. Forcing applications to access services via a network connection introduces a lot of new failure points to the application. Potential failure points include: DNS issues, network hardware issues, remote server issues, and the lack of physical network connections. When network connectivity issues do occur, how are the service clients are implemented is very important. Should the client wait and poll the service until it is accessible again? If so what is the maximum wait time or number of attempts it should retry. Due to the fact of services being distributed across a network automatically increase the responsiveness of client applications due to the fact that processing time must now also include time to send and receive messages from called services. This could add nanoseconds to minutes per each request based on network load and server usage of the service provider.   This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.
