• What options do I have for creating customized keyboard shortcuts?

  As I am getting more heavily into programming as a job and no longer as a hobby, I am definitely in need of some ways to improve my productivity. One thing that would definitely help in that respect is being able to create customized keyboard shortcuts for text/code snippets. For instance, holding down CMD+L+O+R+E+M will output a paragraph or two of the Lorem ipsum filler text, or CMD+F+U creates a function declaration. What I am ideally looking for is a database where I can store formatted text snippets, bind them to my choice of keystrokes, and then have the text paste whenever I perform the associated keystrokes. Are there any stand-alone applications that can do this for a Mac. Also, are there any text editors / IDEs that have this ability built in?

• How can I disable Ctrl+Shift+Arrow from causing my screen to flip?

  Windows 7 Home Premium, Catalyst Control Center. Without any apparent reason, after booting my PC, I got this little balloon "HD 4600 Drivers updated". I did not install any new cards or drivers or anything. But now, when I try to select an entire word by pressing Ctrl + Shift + ? / ? my screen flips left to right and upside down. Where can I disable this annoying shortcut? OR Any other way of selecting the entire word? There is no option for this in Catalyst Control Center.

  This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

• Very Cool &ndash; Miami 311 System for tracking citizen service requests (Windows Azure, Silverlight

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

• How to manage focus for a small set of simple widgets

  I'm developing a set of simple widgets for a small (128x128) display. For example I'd like to have a main screen with an overlay menu which I can use to toggle visibilty of main screen elements. Each option would be an icon with a box around it while it is selected. Button (left, up, right, down, enter) events should be given to the widget that has "focus". Focus is a simple thing to understand when using a GUI, but I'm having trouble implementing this. Can you suggest a simple concept for managing focus and input events? I have these simple ideas: Only one widget can have focus, so I need a single pointer to that widget. When this widget gets some kind of "cycle" input (as in "highlight the next item in this list"), the focus is given to a different widget. a widget must have a way of telling the application which widget the focus is given to next. if a widget cannot give a "next focus" hint, the application must be able to figure out where the focus should go. Widgets are currently structured like this: A widget can have a parent, which is passed to the constructor. Widgets are created statically, as I want to avoid dynamic memory allocation (I only have 16kB of RAM and I'd like to have control over that). widgets have siblings, implemented as an intrusive linked list (they have a next member). A parent has a pointer to the head of its list of children. Input events are arguments to the widgets buttonEvent methods which can accept or ignore that event. If it ignores the event, it can pass the event to its parent. My Questions: How can I manage focus for these widgets? Am I making this too complicated?

• Why is my wireless significantly slower on Ubuntu 12.04, as compared to windows 7?

  I'm dual booting 12.04, and Win7. Just a tiny bit of background, I'm starting to get more and more interested in programming and 3d modelling, so I'd like to learn more about ubuntu as a result of those interests. Still a complete newb though! Anyway, When downloading on windows, I get 1.5mb/s easy. Now I swap over to Ubuntu, and it hasn't topped 150 kb/s since I installed it some 6 months ago. I'd downloaded most of my programs on windows, so I never really noticed it, but as I'm committing to ubuntu more, it's starting to hinder me. I'm with Shaw, on their Highspeed 20, which gives me 20 mbps down, and 6mbps up. Speedtest.com shows me varying figures somewhat close to what shaw says they give on both windows and ubuntu, which is to be expected, given that it is shaw afterall... So, I don't know what you guys need to know, and I know even less about how to get it to you. Whatever information you guys need, tell me how to get it, how to get it up here, and i'll get it on here! I thought it might be that I'm using a proprietary driver, when an open sourced one would work better? But I really have no clue. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

• XNA calculate normals for linesegment

  I am quite new to 3D graphical programming and thus far only understand that normal somehow define the direction in which a vertex faces and therefore the direction in which light is reflected. I have now idea how they are calculated though, only that they are defined by a Vector3. For a visualizer that I am creating I am importing a bunch of coordinate which represent layer upon layer of line segments. At the moment I am only using a vertex buffer and adding the start and end point of each line and then rendering a linelist. The thing is now that I need to calculate the normal for the vertices of these line segments so that I can get some realistic lighting. I have no idea how to calculate these normal but I know they all face sideways and not up or down. To calculate them all I have are the start and end positions of each line segment. The below image is a representation of what I think I need to do in the case of an example layer: The red arrows represent the normal that should be calculates, the blue text represent the coordinates of the vertices and the green numbers represent their indices. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me how I should calculate these normal.

• How can I resolve collisions at different speeds, depending on the direction?

  I have, for all intents and purposes, a Triangle class that objects in my scene can collide with (In actuality, the right side of a parallelogram). My collision detection and resolution code works fine for the purposes of preventing a gameobject from entering into the space of the Triangle, instead directing the movement along the edge. The trouble is, the maximum speed along the x and y axis is not equivalent in my game, and moving along the Y axis (up or down) should take twice as long as an equivalent distance along the X axis (left or right). Unfortunately, these speeds apply to the collision resolution too, and movement along the blue path above progresses twice as fast. What can I do in my collision resolution to make sure that the speedlimit for Y axis movement is obeyed in the latter case? • Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? • Detecting Units on a Grid

  I am making a little turn based strategy game in pygame, that uses a grid system as the main map to hold all the characters and the map layout. (Similar to Fire Emblem, or Advance Wars) I am trying to determine a way to quickly and efficiently (i.e. without too much of a slow down) check if there are any characters within a given range of the currently selected character. So to illustrate: O = currently selected character X = squares within range Range of 1: X X O X X Range of 2: X X X X X X O X X X X X X Range of 3: X X X X X X X X X X X X O X X X X X X X X X X X X Now I have to tell the user who is in range, and I have to let the user choose who to attack if there are multiple enemies in range. If I have a 5x5 grid, filled with " " for empty and numbers for the characters: [ ][ ][ ][ ][4] [ ][1][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][ ][2][3][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] Depending on which character the user selects, I would like to show the user which other characters are in range. So if they all had a range of 3: 1 can hit 2 2 can hit 1 or 3 3 can hit 2 4 cannot hit anyone. So, How do I quickly and/or efficiently run though my grid and tell the user where the enemies are? PS- As a bonus, if someone could give an answer that could also work for a minimum distance type range, I would give them a pat on the back and a high five, should they ever travel to Canada and we ever meet in life. • How to break the "php is a bad language" paradigm? [closed]

  PHP is not a bad language (or at least not as bad as some may suggest). I had teachers that didn't even know PHP was object oriented until I told them. I've had clients that immediately distrust us when we say we are PHP developers and question us for not using chic languages and frameworks such as Django or RoR, or "enterprise and solid" languages such as Java and ASP.NET. Facebook is built on PHP. There are plenty of solid projects that power the web like Joomla and Drupal that are used in the enterprise and governments. There are frameworks and libraries that have some of the best architectures I've seen across all languages (Symfony 2, Doctrine). PHP has the best documentation I've seen and a big community of professionals. PHP has advanced OO features such as reflection, interfaces, let alone that PHP now supports horizontal reuse natively and cleanly through traits. There are bad programmers and script kiddies that give PHP a bad reputation, but power the PHP community at the same time, and because it is so easy to get stuff done PHP you can often do things the wrong way, granted, but why blame the language?. Now, to boil this down to an actual answerable question: what would be a good and solid and short and sweet argument to avoid being frowned upon and stop prejudice in one fell swoop and defend your honor when you say you are a PHP developer?. • ASP.NET High CPU Bringing Servers to their Knees

  Ok, our new build is having 100% cpu spikes on each server at random intervals. For long durations it make the site totally unresponsive - this will be at peak times as people in different countries log on to the site etc. We've looked at perfmom, memory profilers, CLR profiler, sql profilers, Red gate ants profiler, tried load testing in UAT - but cannot even reproduce the problem. This could mean only thousands of users hitting the live site causes it to happen. One pattern we did notice was that the new code - the broken build - actually uses noticably less threads. We are also using spring for IOC - does this have a bed reputation? To make things worse, we cannot deploy to live due to the business impact - so cannot narrow the problem down to subset of the new features we've added. We truly are destroyed - has anyone got any battle scars that may save us a few lives?

• Reasonable Location to Install Web Service on Server

  Firstly, I'm a software developer and not qualified as any kind of system or server expert so I'm looking for advice in order to help me prevent faults on our server. I've written a modular system to carry out certain tasks for us autonomously to prevent us from writing the same old code over and over again. This consists of a Windows Service (.NET), a Web Service (WCF), a shared Class Library, and a Database which will run on a Windows Server 2003. The problem comes, for me, in deployment. Specifically the web service - naturally the local service (and required shared library) are persisted (by default and convention) in the Program Files folder, but storing the web service here just seems absurd to me (even though we'd lock it down to appropriate use only). Should the files be stored some place else all together? Or split them up and store the web service elsewhere?

• Simple queries occasionally running very slowly

  I have some very simple queries that occasionally run very slowly. The table viewed_sites has about 10 - 20 rows. Running EXPLAIN ANALYZE always gives a runtime of less than 3 milliseconds. When the query is run automatically (every 10 seconds) it occasionally takes over a second to run. The query: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') The table: CREATE TABLE viewed_sites ( site_id character varying(4) NOT NULL, last_viewed timestamp with time zone DEFAULT now() NOT NULL ); The (occasional) log result: 2010-05-24 15:47:55 UTC LOG: duration: 1044.632 ms statement: INSERT INTO ga.viewed_sites (site_id) VALUES ('gop2') It's a horribly vague question, but what could be causing this? • Tab stacking in Firefox

  I often use multiple tabs (30 or more). Since I upgraded to Firefox 17, the addon that I had been using to allow tab stacking is no longer compatible. (I believe Tab Mix Plus was the add-on). I'm not interested in changing the color of my tabs or having them listed down the left side of my window. I'd like to have them all along the top of the window in rows. Does anyone know an add-on compatible with Firefox 17?

• Automatically encrypting incoming email

  I have a small website and would like to encrypt incoming email using gpg. Is there a way to force sendmail to check email and encrypt it if its not already encrypted? I'm using GPG on a linux server. Thanks [added]Someone asked what I hope to accomplish. My intent is for the users of the email to become more familiar with seeing thier own email encrypted and losing that fear of the unknown. The side benefit is that the email can't be looked at later down the road. If the email isn't encrypted on its way in, I'm unable to do anything about it. I'm assuming most email would be nosed around with once its already on my hard drive, so GPG would protect against those issues.

• Why do my download speeds drastically vary during a download?

  I watch the download speed rise and fall like waves in a storm. At night, during low bandwidth usage I have achieve speeds as high as 3.23 M/sec but the watch them decline to 250 K/sec. and then climb back up. Over and over. During the day my best is around 1.67 M/sec with lows into the 65 K/sec. On top of this, why does a download need to slow down when approaching the end of the download? It's not like a multi-hundred ton train needing to decrease speed as it approaches the station.

• Read-only lock on a SharePoint site collection, or Why can't I edit anymore?

  Monday morning, the calls started.  For some reason, long-time users were unable to edit list items.  I figured we had a permissions issue, so I popped in to look at the Site Settings -- and found that I couldn't.  A quick trip to Central Administration showed that I was still listed as a Site Collection Administrator, but I had no power at all on the site collection in question.A quick glance at the logs told me that the server had recently shut down unexpectedly (this is a Hyper-V virtual machine).  Apparently, in the confusion, somehow SharePoint decided to lock the site collection as Read Only.  This can be remedied in one of two ways:1)  In Central Administration, go to Application Management->SharePoint Site Management->Site collection quotas and locks.  Once you have arrived, select the correct application and site collection, and you will have the opportunity to view and set the lock status of the collection (it most likely will be set to "Read-only", and you'll want to move that radio button to "Not locked").2)  Fire up stsadm and issue the following command:stsadm -o setsitelock -url http://myportalsitecollection -lock none

• Did Oracle make public any plans to charge for JDK in the near future? [closed]

  I recently read an article: Twelve Disaster Scenarios Which Could Damage the Technology Industry which mentioned among other the possible "disaster scenarios" also: Oracle starts charging for the JDK, giving the following as argument: Oracle could start requiring license fees for the JDK from everyone but desktop users who haven't uninstalled the Java plug-in for some reason. This would burn down half the Java server-side market, but allow Oracle to fully monetize its acquisitions and investments. [...] Oracle tends to destroy markets to create products it can fully monetize. Even if you're not a Java developer, this would have a ripple effect throughout the market. [...] I actually haven't figured out why Larry hasn't decided Java should go this route yet. Some version of this scenario is actually in my company's statement of risks. I know guessing for the future is impossible, and speculating about that would be endless so I will try to frame my question in an objective answarable way: Did Oracle or someone from Oracle under anonymity, make public, or hinted, leaked to the public such a possibility or the above is plain journalistic speculation? I am unable to find the answer myself with Google generating a lot of noise by searching JDK.

• What is the proper way to maintain the angle of a gun mounted on a car?

  So I am making a simple game. I want to put a gun on top of a car. I want to be able to control the angle of the gun. Basically it can go forward all the way so that it is parallel to the ground facing the direction the car is moving or it can point behind the car and any of the angles in between these positions. I have something like the following right now but its not really working. It moves the gun up and down. But when the car moves around, the angle of the gun changes. Not what I want.

• Can a Linksys Router be the cause of bad speeds on a 1.5 mbps link.

  We use a Linksys 5-port router at a smal organization with about 20 employees. We recently acquired a 1.5 mbps fibre link, but sometimes the link goes down and speeds are still low. On enquirey from the ISP, this was part of the response, However there maybe throttling due to the router in place. A Linksys is a low end router and may be unable to carried traffic of up to 1536Kbps. We are in a position to deploy a Cisco 871 router on test for 2 wks to eliminate that possibility. Also kindly advise the destination of the ping results they look to high. How true is that about the router throttling the network and need for a bigger one.
