  Exciting day today as Oracle Database 12c is released. You can find lots of information on the release on OTN here. With this release comes another milestone on Oracle's Data Integration roadmap - OWB is no longer shipped with the database. You will notice that the OWB documentation is no longer included with the Oracle Database documentation, you can compare and contrast the 11.2 and 12.1 documentation below. OWB 11gR2 is still supported with Oracle Database 12c, you will need 11.2.0.3 plus at least CP2 which has been certified with Oracle Database 12c. The 11.2.0.4 release will wrapper this into one install.

So far I've published over 10 apps successfully. Is this a good thing to put on my resume? Does it appear to show a grasp of the latest Microsoft technologies? Any downside seen by potential employers? Would you put this on your resume, if looking for a full time professional Software Engineering position?

I tried to explain that there is no equivalent Java EE 6 Programmer examination, but a number of different exams, such as Web Services, Web Components, and Enterprise JavaBeans. Is there a recommended path to follow for the various Oracle certifications in the Enterprise Edition of Java? Is it logical to take some exams prior to taking others because the content builds upon previous knowledge or are they all independent?

  While I joked earlier this month that SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 was released on the same day as General Availability (hey, it's Microsoft's fault since they decided to GA on April 1), this time it isn't a joke. Today Microsoft has released Cumulative Update #1 for SQL Server 2012 . About half of the fixes affect the database engine. • Getting a virus is *very* annoying

  I spent most of yesterday removing an annoying virus from my PC. I feel slightly foolish for getting one in the first place, but after so many years I guess I was always going to eventually succumb. I was also a little surprised at the failure of various tools at removing it. The virus would redirect the browser to websites including ‘licosearch’, ‘hugosearch’ and ‘facebook’, and the disk would be thrashing away infecting dlls in some way. I had the full up to date version of McAfee installed. This identified that there was an issue in some dlls on the system and was able to ‘fix’ them. But they kept getting re-infected. So I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and this too was able to identify and ‘fix’ the infected dlls. The system scans take forever and I really expected better results. I also tried Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, AVG and Sophos to no avail. Eventually I thought I’d investigate myself. It turned out that on reboot, the virus would start 3 instances of Firefox.exe which I’m guessing would do bad things including infecting as many dlls on the system as possible. I removed Firefox and the virus cleverly then launched 3 instances of Chrome! So I uninstalled Chrome and yes, it then started to launch 3 instances of iexplore.exe. If I’m honest, by this stage I was just seeing if it would be able to use any of the browsers! As it was starting these on reboot, I looked in my User Startup folder and there was a <randomly named>.exe and several log files. I deleted these and rebooted. When I looked they had been recreated. So I then looked in the registry Run and RunOnce entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Sure enough there were entries to run a file in C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe. I deleted this and rebooted and it was fixed. I also looked in the event log and found a warning that Winlogon had failed to start the file C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe So I also checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and this entry had also been changed. Finally I ran a full system scan to clean up any infected dlls. I hope it’s gone for good!  #

• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through. So, in the above work around if I change the identity to “Production\Admin” then the IntelliTrace does not throw an exception. This error has been reported to Microsoft and it is expected that it will be fixed in one of the future releases. Enjoy!

• Bring the Windows 8 'Start Menu' back!

  I've been using the the Windows 8 RTM from MSDN for a week but the more of my normal software I load onto the machine the more awkward it becomes using the new 'Metro' (yes I know that name is now not used) 'Start' screen. Yes, you can oraganise your programs in groups, or you can add them to the Quick Launch bar, or you can create alphabetic folders on the desktop but sorry Microsoft, none of these are as logical as the alphabetic Start menu of previous Windows versions.Fortunately the good people at Stardock have a solution in 'Start8', which brings the Start Menu we know and love back to Windows 8. It's still in Beta and the current one runs out in October. I'm looking forward to the final release and like lots of other users, I'll be happy to pay for this.Lets hope Microsoft either reinstate the Start Menu in the first service pack or gives us a usable alternative.
