• LWJGL Java 2D collision when lagging

- by user1990950
I'm using a tile based collision, but when the game is lagging (the lag isn't the problem) the collision fails and the player falls through tiles. This is the movement/collision detection code of my Player class: gravity.y = gspeed; speed.y+=gravity.y; position.set(position.x + direction.x * speed.x * deltaSeconds, position.y + direction.y * speed.y * deltaSeconds); for (int i = (int) Math.round(position.x / 32) - 2 * t; i < (int) Math.round(position.x / 32) + 3 * t; i++) { for (int j = (int) Math.round(position.y / 32); j < (int) Math.round((position.y + height + 64) / 32); j++) { checkCollision(i, j, deltaSeconds); } } public void checkCollision(int i, int j, float deltaSeconds) { bbox.setBounds((int) position.x, (int) position.y, (int) width, (int) height); Tile t = null; t = Map.getTile(i, j); if (t != null) { if (t.isSolid()) { if (t.getTop().intersects(bbox)) { if (position.y + height < t.y * 32 + 32) { if (speed.y >= 0) { position.y = t.y * 32 - height; speed.y = 0; gravity.y = 0; jumpState = 0; } } } if (t.getBottom().intersects(bbox)) { if (position.y < t.y * 32 + 32) { position.y = t.y * 32 + 32; speed.y = 0; } } else { if (t.getLeft().intersects(bbox)) { if (position.x + width > t.x * 32) { position.x = t.x * 32 - width; speed.x = 0; } } if (t.getRight().intersects(bbox)) { if (position.x < t.x * 32 + 32) { position.x = t.x * 32 + 32; speed.x = 0; } } } } } } Is it possible to fix my code, if yes how? Or is it possible to tell if the game is lagging?

• Problem Loading a DLL (4 replies)

I'm having some issues now that I can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm Pinvoking a non WindowsAPI DLL (I mean, not a dll provided on windows). Pinvoking LoadLibrary, I can get a IntPtr to any WindowsAPI DLL, but never I can get a pointer to my DLL. The code I'm using is very simple, like this one: [DllImport("kernel32.dll", SetLastError true)] public static extern IntPtr LoadLibrary(); static void ...

• Answer programming for "What are your interests?" interview questions?

- by Morgan Herlocker
For interview questions that ask for personal hobbies, should you mention a bunch of tech activities you enjoy, like how "I love building java applets in my free time" or should you focus on non-programming activities to show you are well rounded? Does it show passion to say programming is a hobby, or does it sound disingenuous? I could see it going either way, so please back up your answer with some sound reasoning.

• Java : 2D Collision Detection

- by neko
I'm been working on 2D rectangle collision for weeks and still cannot get this problem fixed. The problem I'm having is how to adjust a player to obstacles when it collides. I'm referencing this link. The player sometime does not get adjusted to obstacles. Also, it sometimes stuck in obstacle guy after colliding. Here, the player and the obstacle are inheriting super class Sprite I can detect collision between the two rectangles and the point by ; public Point getSpriteCollision(Sprite sprite, double newX, double newY) { // set each rectangle Rectangle spriteRectA = new Rectangle( (int)getPosX(), (int)getPosY(), getWidth(), getHeight()); Rectangle spriteRectB = new Rectangle( (int)sprite.getPosX(), (int)sprite.getPosY(), sprite.getWidth(), sprite.getHeight()); // if a sprite is colliding with the other sprite if (spriteRectA.intersects(spriteRectB)){ System.out.println("Colliding"); return new Point((int)getPosX(), (int)getPosY()); } return null; } and to adjust sprites after a collision: // Update the sprite's conditions public void update() { // only the player is moving for simplicity // collision detection on x-axis (just x-axis collision detection at this moment) double newX = x + vx; // calculate the x-coordinate of sprite move Point sprite = getSpriteCollision(map.getSprite().get(1), newX, y);// collision coordinates (x,y) if (sprite == null) { // if the player is no colliding with obstacle guy x = newX; // move } else { // if collided if (vx > 0) { // if the player was moving from left to right x = (sprite.x - vx); // this works but a bit strange } else if (vx < 0) { x = (sprite.x + vx); // there's something wrong with this too } } vx=0; y+=vy; vy=0; } I think there is something wrong in update() but cannot fix it. Now I only have a collision with the player and an obstacle guy but in future, I'm planning to have more of them and making them all collide with each other. What would be a good way to do it? Thanks in advance.

• Seven Accounting Changes for 2010

- by Theresa Hickman
I read a very interesting article called Seven Accounting Changes That Will Affect Your 2010 Annual Report from SmartPros that nicely summarized how 2010 annual financial statements will be impacted. Here’s a Reader’s Digest version of the changes: 1. Changes to revenue recognition if you sell bundled products with multiple deliverables: Old Rule: You needed to objectively establish the “fair value” of each bundled item. So if you sold a dishwasher plus installation and could not establish the fair value of the installation, you might have to delay recognizing revenue of the dishwasher days or weeks later until it was installed. New Rule (ASU 2009-13): “Objective” proof of each service or good is no longer required; you can simply estimate the selling price of the installation and warranty. So the dishwasher vendor can recognize the dishwasher revenue immediately at the point of sale without waiting a few weeks for the installation. Then they can recognize the estimated value of the installation after it is complete. 2. Changes to revenue recognition for devices with embedded software: Old Rule: Hardware devices with embedded software, such as the iPhone, had to follow stringent software revrec rules. This forced Apple to recognize iPhone revenues over two years, the period of time that software updates were provided. New Rule (ASU 2009-14): Software revrec rules no longer apply to these devices with embedded software; these devices can now follow ASU 2009-13. This allows vendors, such as Apple, to recognize revenue sooner. 3. Fair value disclosures: Companies (both public and private) now need to spend extra time gathering, summarizing, and disclosing information about items measured at fair value, such as significant transfers in and out of Level 1(quoted market price), Level 2 (valuation based on observable markets), and Level 3 (valuations based on internal information). 4. Consolidation of variable interest entities (a.k.a special purpose entities): Consolidation rules for variable interest entities now require a qualitative, not quantitative, analysis to determine the primary beneficiary. Instead of simply looking at the percentage of voting interests, the primary beneficiary could have less than the majority interests as long as it has the power to direct the activities and absorb any losses. 5. XBRL: Starting in June 2011, all U.S. public companies are required to file financial statements to the SEC using XBRL. Note: Oracle supports XBRL reporting. 6. Non-GAAP financial disclosures: Companies that report non-GAAP measures of performance, such as EBITDA in SEC filings, have more flexibility. The new interpretations can be found here: http://www.sec.gov/divisions/corpfin/guidance/nongaapinterp.htm. 7. Loss contingencies disclosures: Companies should expect additional scrutiny of their loss disclosures, such as those from litigation losses, in their annual financial statements. The SEC wants more disclosures about loss contingencies sooner instead of after the cases are settled.

• startup Error for Zend Server CE

- by Jamison
Hello! I've got a strange startup error for Zend Server CE - it's probably easy to fix, but I don't have much experience with Zend Server! I'm running the latest OSX 10.6.6 and the latest Zend Server CE for Mac. When I run the "start" command from the command line, here is what I get: /usr/local/zend/bin/apachectl start [OK] spawn-fcgi: child spawned successfully: PID: 4206 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4210 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4211 Bus error $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 Starting Zend Server GUI [Lighttpd] [FAILED] /usr/local/zend/bin/lighttpdctl.sh: line 46: 4212 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY Starting MySQL SUCCESS! /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4304 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4425 Bus error $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 Starting Java bridge [FAILED] /usr/local/zend/bin/java_bridge.sh: line 39: 4426 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY Zend Server started... The challenge is that ZEND SERVER wont open the GUI with this error, and seemingly I can click on Zend Server in the Applications folder and it opens for a second and immediately closes. I've made sure that Web Sharing is turned off to avoid conflicts, and I've run Disk Utility from my recovery disk to make sure there are no file system errors. Here is what the lines that are referenced in the errors have in terms of code: shell_functions.rc: (starting on line 132 - the error message says line 133...): launch() { if [ -z "$DEBUG" ]; then exec 3>/dev/null 4>&3 else exec 3>&1 4>&2 fi $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 RET=$? if [ $RET -eq 0 ];then $ECHO_CMD "$BINARY watchdog is up and running.. ${OK_COLOR}[OK]${T_RESET}" return $RET else #$WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY >> "$PREFIX/logs/watchdog_$BINARY.log" 2>&1 $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 report $? "Starting" fi } _kill() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ $? -eq 1 ];then $ECHO_CMD "$BINARY is not running" else $WATCHDOG -t $BINARY > /dev/null 2>&1 report $? "Stopping" fi } lighttpdctl.sh: (starting on line 45 - the error message says line 46...): status() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY } case "$1" in start) start status ;; stop) stop ;; restart) stop sleep 1 start ;; status) status ;; *) usage exit 1 esac exit $? java_bridge.sh: (starting on line 38 - the error message says line 39...): status() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY } Question: "Watchdog" is library in this zend BIN folder - it seems to handle error reporting? all the errors in my start command seem to deal with this Watchdog thing, but I don't know what to do about it... Thanks!

• 2D scene graph not transforming relative to parent

- by Dr.Denis McCracleJizz
I am currently in the process of coding my own 2D Scene graph, which is basically a port of flash's render engine. The problem I have right now is my rendering doesn't seem to be working properly. This code creates the localTransform property for each DisplayObject. Matrix m_transform = Matrix.CreateRotationZ(rotation) * Matrix.CreateScale(scaleX, scaleY, 1) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(new Vector3(x, y, z)); This is my render code. float dRotation; Vector2 dPosition, dScale; Matrix transform; transform = this.localTransform; if (parent != null) transform = localTransform * parent.localTransform; DecomposeMatrix(ref transform, out dPosition, out dRotation, out dScale); spriteBatch.Draw(this.texture, dPosition, null, Color.White, dRotation, new Vector2(originX, originY), dScale, SpriteEffects.None, 0.0f); Here is the result when I try to add the Stage then to the stage a First DisplayObjectContainer and then a second one. It may look fine but the problem lies in the fact that I add a first DisplayObjectContainer at (400,400) and the second one within it (that's the smallest one) at position (0,0). So he should be right over its parent but he gets render within the parent at the same position the parent has (400, 400) for some reason. It's just as if I double the parent's localMatrix and then render the second cat there. This is the code i use to loop through every childs. base.Draw(spriteBatch); foreach (DisplayObject childs in _childs) { childs.Draw(spriteBatch); }

• Announcing Key Functional White Papers for SIM and ReIM

- by Oracle Retail Documentation Team
Oracle Retail has published two new documents on My Oracle Support (https://support.oracle.com) that provide partners and retailers with deeper functional information about two products: Oracle Retail Store Inventory Management (SIM) and Oracle Retail Invoice Matching. Oracle Retail Store Inventory Management Item Configuration White Paper (Doc ID 1507221.1) There is functionality within the Store Inventory Management system related to item configuration that spans across multiple concepts that apply to the application as a whole rather than to a specific area. This white paper covers numerous topics around item configuration including: Item Transaction Levels Item Long Description Pack Size Standard Unit of Measure Standard Unit of Measure Conversion Pack Items Simple Pack Conversion Items (Notional Packs) Ranging Items Item Status Non-Sellable Items Type-2 Item Recognition UPC-E Barcodes Non-Inventory Items Consignment and Concession Items Quick Response Codes Oracle Retail Invoice Matching Financial Transactions (Doc ID 1500209.1) This document explains the financial transactions that are posted by Oracle Retail Invoice Matching (ReIM). The scope of the document is limited to ReIM transactions only, and does not explain Retail Merchandising System (RMS), Finance, or Account Receivable transactions. ReIM follows the double-entry accounting standard, which works by recording the debit and credit of each financial transaction belonging to each party involved. Each transaction means a profit to one account (debit) and a loss to another account (credit). Full invoice match processing is completed in ReIM with payment recommendations communicated to Oracle Accounts Payable. ReIM matches merchandise orders and receipts against merchandise invoices, performing automated and manual matching, as well as discrepancy-resolution processing. Matched invoices are posted to interface staging tables specifying the amount and date to pay, vendor, site ID, General Ledger Chart of Accounts (GL CoA) information, and payment terms. Other payables documents, including debit memos, credit memos and credit notes are also interfaced to Accounts Payable through the ReIM staging tables (IM_AP_STAGE_HEAD and IM_AP_STAGE_DETAIL). For information about how ReIM engages in this processing, see the latest Oracle Retail Invoice Matching Operations Guide. Certain ReIM transactions are not interfaced to Oracle Payables, but instead are interfaced to Oracle General Ledger through the IM_FINANCIAL_STAGE table. When analyzing transactions posted through the staging tables, retailers should note the transaction type, Standard/Credit, as well as the sign in the amount field. Technically, a negative sign on a credit transaction changes the transaction to a debit entry, and vice versa. This document is concerned about the financial meaning of the transactions, and will avoid a discussion of negative numbers in T-charts.

• Event Driven Behavior Tree: deterministic traversal order with parallel

- by Heisenbug
I've studied several articles and listen some talks about behavior trees (mostly the resources available on AIGameDev by Alex J. Champandard). I'm particularly interested on event driven behavior trees, but I have still some doubts on how to implement them correctly using a scheduler. Just a quick recap: Standard Behavior Tree Each execution tick the tree is traversed from the root in depth-first order The execution order is implicitly expressed by the tree structure. So in the case of behaviors parented to a parallel node, even if both children are executed during the same traversing, the first leaf is always evaluated first. Event Driven BT During the first traversal the nodes (tasks) are enqueued using a scheduler which is responsible for updating only running ones every update The first traversal implicitly produce a depth-first ordered queue in the scheduler Non leaf nodes stays suspended mostly of the time. When a leaf node terminate(either with success or fail status) the parent (observer) is waked up allowing the tree traversing to continue and new tasks will be enqueued in the scheduler Without parallel nodes in the tree there will be up to 1 task running in the scheduler Without parallel nodes, the tasks in the queue(excluding dynamic priority implementation) will be always ordered in a depth-first order (is this right?) Now, from what is my understanding of a possible implementation, there are 2 requirements I think must be respected(I'm not sure though): Now, some requirements I think needs to be guaranteed by a correct implementation are: The result of the traversing should be independent from which implementation strategy is used. The traversing result must be deterministic. I'm struggling trying to guarantee both in the case of parallel nodes. Here's an example: Parallel_1 -->Sequence_1 ---->leaf_A ---->leaf_B -->leaf_C Considering a FIFO policy of the scheduler, before leaf_A node terminates the tasks in the scheduler are: P1(suspended),S1(suspended),leaf_A(running),leaf_C(running) When leaf_A terminate leaf_B will be scheduled (at the end of the queue), so the queue will become: P1(suspended),S1(suspended),leaf_C(running),leaf_B(running) In this case leaf_B will be executed after leaf_C at every update, meanwhile with a non event-driven traversing from the root node, the leaf_B will always be evaluated before leaf_A. So I have a couple of question: do I have understand correctly how event driven BT work? How can I guarantee the depth first order is respected with such an implementation? is this a common issue or am I missing something?

• Can I use Ubuntu to write a Windows 7 ISO to USB in Ubuntu?

The screen looks like this: Is there a way to make Windows boot from a USB image created on Linux?

• How to manage many mobile device users at server side?

- by Rami
I built a social Android application in which users can see other users around them by GPS location. At the beginning thing went well as I had low number of users, but now that I have increasing number of users (about 1500 +100 every day) it has revealed a major problem in my design. In my Google App Engine servlet I have static HashMap that holds all the users profiles objects, currently 1500 and this number will increase as more users register. Why I'm doing it? Every user that requests for the users around him compares his GPS with other users and checks if they are in his 10km radius. This happens every five minutes on average. Consequently, I can't get the users from db every time because GAE read/write operation quota will tear me apart. The problem with this design is? As the number of users increases, the Hashmap turns to null every 4-6 hours, I think that this time is getting shorter, but I'm not sure. I'm fixing this by reloading the users from the db every time I detect that it becomes null, but this causes DOS to my users for 30 sec, so I'm looking for better solution. I'm guessing that it happens because the size of the hashmap. Am I right? I have been advised to use a spatial database, but that means that I can't work with GAE any more and it means that I need to build my big server all over again and lose my existing DB. Is there something I can do with the existing tools? Thanks.

• SSIS Catalog: How to use environment in every type of package execution

- by Kevin Shyr
Here is a good blog on how to create a SSIS Catalog and setting up environments. http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson/archive/2010/11/13/ssis-server-catalogs-environments-environment-variables-in-ssis-in-denali.aspx Here I will summarize 3 ways I know so far to execute a package while using variables set up in SSIS Catalog environment. First way, we have SSIS project having reference to environment, and having one of the project parameter using a value set up in the environment called "Development". With this set up, you are limited to calling the packages by right-clicking on the packages in the SSIS catalog list and select Execute, but you are free to choose absolute or relative path of the environment. The following screenshot shows the 2 available paths to your SSIS environments. Personally, I use absolute path because of Option 3, just to keep everything simple for myself. The second option is to call through SQL Job. This does require you to configure your project to already reference an environment and use its variable. When a job step is set up, the configuration part will require you to select that reference again. This is more useful when you want to automate the same package that needs to be run in different environments. The third option is the most important to me as I have a SSIS framework that calls hundreds of packages. The main part of the stored procedure is in this post (http://geekswithblogs.net/LifeLongTechie/archive/2012/11/14/time-to-stop-using-ldquoexecute-package-taskrdquondash-a-way-to.aspx). But the top part had to be modified to include the logic to use environment reference. CREATE PROCEDURE [AUDIT].[LaunchPackageExecutionInSSISCatalog] @PackageName NVARCHAR(255) , @ProjectFolder NVARCHAR(255) , @ProjectName NVARCHAR(255) , @AuditKey INT , @DisableNotification BIT , @PackageExecutionLogID INT , @EnvironmentName NVARCHAR(128) = NULL , @Use32BitRunTime BIT = FALSE AS BEGIN TRY DECLARE @execution_id BIGINT = 0; -- Create a package execution IF @EnvironmentName IS NULL BEGIN EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name=@PackageName, @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=@ProjectFolder, @project_name=@ProjectName, @use32bitruntime=@Use32BitRunTime; END ELSE BEGIN DECLARE @EnvironmentID AS INT SELECT @EnvironmentID = [reference_id] FROM SSISDB.[internal].[environment_references] WITH(NOLOCK) WHERE [environment_name] = @EnvironmentName AND [environment_folder_name] = @ProjectFolder EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name=@PackageName, @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=@ProjectFolder, @project_name=@ProjectName, @reference_id=@EnvironmentID, @use32bitruntime=@Use32BitRunTime; END

• Swap Utilization: System Level Versus Individual Process

- by Max
On my top output, at header level, swap is showing 0k used. But on each individual process the SWAP is shown as a non-zero value (output column enabled with option p). What does this mean? Swap: 4870140k total, 0k used, 4870140k free, 571300k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ SWAP COMMAND 2448 max 20 0 323m 87m 27m S 0 4.4 1:23.31 236m chrome
