• Why do we use HTTP and not remote invocations?

  Hey, first of all this is a conceptional question and I do not know if StackOverflow is the appropriate place - so my apologies if I am wrong. Nowadays the web is not only used for passing raw informations. Many and especially complex web applications are in use. These web application seem to be so complex that it seems irrational to use the HTTP protocol, which is based on so simple data exchange, plus it is stateless. Would it not be more convincing to use remote invocations for this web applications? The big advantage to my mind is a unified GUI by using HTML. But there are applications, which have no need for a graphical interfaces and then it comes to a point where the HTTP protocol is really cumbersome.

Should sticky_session be set to true or false for in memory session replication. http://tomcat.apache.org/connectors-doc/reference/workers.html mentions : Set sticky_session to False when Tomcat is using a Session Manager which can persist session data across multiple instances of Tomcat. where as /tomcat-6.0-doc/cluster-howto.html (Cluster Basics) mentions : Make sure that your loadbalancer is configured for sticky session mode.

  Hi everyone! I have a ModalPopUpExtender with an UpdatePanel on it. On the UpdatePanel,there few labels and componentart Grid which Updates from the server on every Asynchronous postback when an image button is clicked. The Problem is that the server code updates the modalpopupextender labels as the information on the grid but it wont display the Updated version of it on the modal Popup Extender. Need some Help... • How do I read CalDAV objects from Google using python/django?

  I've looked at vObject, iCalendar and the official list of CalDAV libraries, including 3 in python. However, I can't find any code that can get me an event object from a given CalDAV (i.e. google, exchange, etc.) server using a username/password. Most of the django calendar related code uses native code libraries and not WebDAV. An ideal python CalDAV client example would 1) use a given uid/pw, 2) obtain primary calendar and 3) obtain next appointment information (i.e. subject, location, start, end, etc.) Thanks!

• Parameters not being passed into template when using the .Net transform classes

  I am using the .Net XslCompiledTranform to run some simple XSLT (see below for a simplified example). The example XSLT is meant to do simply show the value of the parameter that is passed in to the template. The output is what I expect it to be (i.e. <result xmlns:p1="http://www.doesnotexist.com"> <valueOfParamA>valueA</valueOfParamA> </result> when I use Saxon 9.0, but when I use XslCompiledTransform (XslTransform) in .net I get <result xmlns:p1="http://www.doesnotexist.com"> <valueOfParamA></valueOfParamA> </result> The problem is that that the parameter value of paramA is not being passed into the template when I use the .Net classes. I completely stumped as to why. when I step through in Visual Studio, the debugger says that the template will be called with paramA='valueA' but when execution switches to the template the value of paramA is blank. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Is this a bug in the MS implementation or (more likely) am I doing something that is forbidden in XSLT? Any help greatly appreciated. • Active Directory public key use

  I have a client who has a requirement to validate users logging into my web application against his active directory using LDAP. In trying to connect using the DirectoryEntry and DirectorySearcher .NET classes, I can connect to his AD Server but not access it. The client's AD server has an SSL Certificate for which he has given me a public key file but I don't know how to use this public key file in my C# code. When I issue the connect command through code, I see, via Wireshark, my application sending the connection request. I then see the server responding with "Server Hello, Certificate, Certificate Request, Server Hello Done". Then my application never responds after that. In using another application, written by somebody else for which I do not have code, I see the same request from the server and then see the application respond with "Certificate, Client Key Exchange" and then the application connects and runs. With that said, my question then becomes, how can I get my C# application to load and send the key file I got from the client?

• Ctrl-M chars when transfer files SFTP

  Hi, I am sending files from a windows system to a Unix SFTP server using JSCAPE ftp client. However, I am experiencing the following issue: When uploading a text file from windows to UNiX, each line of text files transferred contains Control-M characters. I did some search and found out that If I use the "ASCII" transfer mode it should solve the issue. But the Ctrl-M is still appearing on the files. Can anyone throw some light in this issue? thanks in advance

  Let's say I have this data model: class Workflow(models.Model): ... class Command(models.Model): workflow = models.ForeignKey(Workflow) ... class Job(models.Model): command = models.ForeignKey(Command) ... Suppose somewhere I want to loop through all the Workflow objects, and for each workflow I want to loop through its Commands, and for each Command I want to loop through each Job. Is there a way to structure this with a single query? That is, I'd like Workflow.objects.all() to join in its dependent models, so I get a collection that has dependent objects already cached, so workflows[0].command_set.get() doesn't produce an additional query. Is this possible?

• iPad orientation on launch problem in portrait (bottom home button)

  Hi.... I've an iPad app that supports all orientation... my problem was on the start up of the application. In case of landScapeRight and landScapeLeft and portrait(top home button) the views shows correctly but when the app start in portrait (bottom home button) the views show in landscape mode... I've implemented the - (void) willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation When I change the apps orientation the views shows correctly.

  I have a Django form that uses an integer field to lookup a model object by its primary key. The form has a save() method that uses the model object referred to by the integer field. • Multiple Broadcast Messages with Less Data or Less Broadcast Messages with More Data?

  Hi, I am developing an application which is communicating with the server. Tha application can perform log-in and get different parameters from server. The application consists of a RESTful client (custom class for making requests), Communication Service (the service which runs in the background) and the main activity. For now I created multiple broadcast messages and multiple broadcast receivers in the main activity so when the application performs login operation a receiver (loginBroadcastReceiver) in the main activity receives a message and when another parameter is received from the server different message is broadcasted and another receiver handles the message. This way however the application performance is poor but I am not sure whether it is due to multiple broadcast receivers. Does anyone know what is the best way to exchange data between service and main activity - is it better to create a single broadcast receiver and retrieve all parameters from message or is it better to initialize multiple broadcast receivers for multiple parameters? I would appreciate if you could provide any useful resource about the topic because I'm writing the thesis and it would be good if the solution could be explained.

• Why AVCaptureSession output a wrong orientation?

  Hey guys, So, I followed Apple's instructions to capture video session using AVCaptureSession: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/qa/qa2010/qa1702.html. One problem I'm facing is that even though the orientation of the camera / iphone device is vertical (and the AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer shows a vertical camera stream), the output image seems to be in the landscape mode. I checked the width and height of imageBuffer inside imageFromSampleBuffer: of the sample code, and I got 640px and 480px respectively. Does anyone know why this's the case? Thanks!

• DB time always showing as zero in Rails development log timings

  I've noticed that the Rails log correctly displays the time taken to execute an action in the logs, and that the View: part of that is also rendered correctly. However, the DB: value is always zero: Aug 11 13:00:22 [2326] INFO: Completed in 2072ms (View: 94, DB: 0) | 200 OK In fact, all my DB timings are being logged as zero. I'm logging at DEBUG level, in development mode, running Rails 2.3.2. Apologies in advance if the answer is blatantly obvious.

I can't see a great deal of info on how I might go about this - it seems that you have to turn the cache off for the page rather than run php code uncached.

• my server suddenly crashes every 2 days or so. Programmer has no idea, please help find the cause, here is the top

  Every couple of days my server suddenly crashes and I must request hardware reset at data center to get it back running. Today I came back to my shell and saw the server was dead and "top" was running on it, and see below for the "top" right before the crash. I opened /var/log/messages and scrolled to the reboot time and see nothing, no errors prior to the hard reboot. (I checked in /etc/syslog.conf and I see "*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages" , isn't this good enough to log all problems?) Usually when I look at the top, the swap is never used up like this! I also don't know why mysqld is at 323% cpu (server only runs drupal and its never slow or overloaded). Solver is my application. I don't know whats that 'sh' doing and 'dovecot' doing. • Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

  We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?
