• Force logoff of idle users on Windows 7 workstation with fast user switching enabled

  We have mission-critical Windows 7 workstations on our network that must be available to any user at any time, even when it has been locked by a prior user. Thus, we have fast user switching enabled. Unfortunately, it's not unusual for us to have a dozen or more different users logged onto the same machine at the same time, with a corresponding degradation in service. We've done our best at educating the masses to log off at the end of their shift. But users being users, this does not happen on a consistent basis. Does anyone know of a clean way to force logoff idle users after a certain amount of time has elapsed? I am open to any method that could be deployed/configured via script, GPO, or SCCM.

• How to use 3T SAS HDDs which aren't supported by Dell PERC 6i

  We bought several 3T SAS hard disks want to use with our Dell R710 server. But we found our R710 can't recognize the 3T hd, and then we dig out the raid card is PERC 6i which doesn't support it. Contacted with Dell that H700 and H800 support 3T hd, thought we can buy a H700 , but the SAS cable is not available in the market right now. And it seems very hard for us to change the raid card, also no suitable tools to tease the special screws. So I want to know if any other method to use these 3T hds instead of putting them in the warehouse? Can I low formatting it to 2TB, and plug it into Dell R710 to use? Or a SAS to USB adapter to use it as USB external disk? I just want to use them by Dell R710 even external.

• Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

• Database backup regardless of backup made through a control panel?

  I know that all CMS or CMC platforms have some sort of walkthrough for their users to fully backup and restore the database or the whole website. While we all can perform such backups (and there are even plugins which automate the whole procedure) and restore them in necessity (such as when we migrate to a new server), one can also backup the whole website by means of such control panels as Directadmin or Cpanel. Now, I just want to know if it is necessary for us to do database or website backups the way they are described by a specific CMC or CMS developer even after we perform a whole website backup in a control panel such as DA? An example of such CMS platforms is moodle. Moodle Docs describes how we can backup and restore moodle in here. So do we, out of necessity, have to make the backup the way described, or we can simply do it the Control panel way? Thanks

• How to justify rewriting/revamping legacy software in a business case?

  I work for a great little software company which makes good revenue from our main software package. The problem for me is that it's almost unmaintainable. It's written in Delphi 7 (has upgraded versions over time) and has been worked on by a lot of developers over the past 20 or so years. The software lacks any meaningful architecture - there's no object orientation whatsoever, horrible amounts of cyclical dependencies and an over-reliance on global variables to name just a few things. Another huge thing for me is Delphi 7 does NOT support 64-bit. The problem here for me is that my management team don't care about technical things, they want to know why they should care. Obviously that's expected, so what I'm asking here is for some guidance, or tales, or pitfalls about this kind of thing. There's a few things I would love to include, namely for me, the length of time taken to debug/write a feature in "legacy" code, versus coherent, well structured OO code. Does anyone know of any blog posts or the like where this is talked about? For us in the company this is a huge reason. Despite being decent developers we feel like writing a new feature is just piling more rubbish on top. On top of that, even for me who has a decent level of understanding of the code, changing things is infuriating - a small change can have a ridiculous domino effect. Anyone have any experiences they'd like to share?

  Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh. Anyone know the rough prices?

• How to react to an office harassment based on my profession ? [closed]

  A lot of my co-workers (not developers, people from the other departments) who are framing me in the classical "nerd" stereotype, and with that acting disturbing towards me. Of course they are not aggressive or anything, since we are in a work environment having rules on it's own, plus we are all grownups now, but they are on a "quite war" against me (not particularly against me, they are against all developers, but I am the only one who dares to speak about it). I hear names, "nerd", "geek", "cyborg", "outsider" and so on, it's really inappropriate. Of course, nothing is said in our faces, but, you know, "you hear things over". Also this general feeling of "them not liking us at all" can be sensed in the air all the time. And while it is not a problem for a few weeks, a larger duration of constant office harassment (going for months now), can be really annoying and can cause a serious drop in the development performance, which will (inevitably) lead to problems with the management (maybe getting me fired). I want to know, should I continue with my current defensive strategy (passively ignoring their inappropriate labels) or should I switch into a more aggressive maneuvers, like giving them logical reasons why their antisocial behavior should be banned?

  I read about EFF's Panopticlick project to see how unique your webbrowser's headers are. I would like to anonymize that a bit. My current User Agent is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.7 I would like to make that more anonymous, however I still wanted to be counted as a Firefox and Ubuntu user. How can I change my User Agent in Firefox? What should I change it to so that it's less unique, but will be counted as a Firefox user and a Ubuntu user on web analytics software? I know that there is no guarantee that I will be counted a Firefox/Ubuntu user, just something that 'works most of the time' would be sufficent.

• Employers and intellectual property 2

  I have a question about intellectual property, I am currently a manager in a small manufacturing firm. The owners are driven by greed and don't appreciate the development process of complex machinery and are happy just to send things out half done. I on the other hand think that it should be done properly as breakdown in the field can be costly, embarrassing. They seem to have all of us running around doing most of the work out of hours using the attitude of "Be grateful to have a job" yet no one has a contract or any security or any agreement in place. For a couple of the projects i am using PLC's and doing the code in my own time and the testing during company time, and i am aware that they cannot support their own machines if i left, but as i created the code in my own time who owns it? The have asked my to put in a shutdown code for a maintenance request after a given length of time, could this be classed as criminal damage or anything illegal apart from immoral? (we sell the machines with 12 month warrantee, shut down after) But as time goes on I'm getting rather fed up of the companies attitude toward the client. I am considering keeping the clients as my own and get them to contact me directly In the shutdown code. By doing something like this is a trial version contact me for a full license? I wouldn't feel bad for my current employer as he is not afraid to S***t on people as he has been evolved in numerous law suits and has over 30 failed companies leaving people and customers high and dry, we have took the company this far on the reputation of the workers and and i can see things heading like all the other companies he has owned and taking our reputations with him. So i suppose now i have set the scene, if i code into it to contact me directly in the shutdown could there be any legal impact on me, as i rightly or wrongly think i own the code and designs? I am trying to open an URL from a bash script to have it open in profile "test", like this: firefox -P "test" http://www.example.org/ However that opens it in profile "software" anyway. Any ideas? • MySQL Workbench 5.2.43 GA released

• Dedicated Servers: Is one better then two for LAMP pseudo HA setup? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I know there are zillions of commentary about hosting out there, but I haven't read much about this. Our current well known host is having too many problems, the hardware we are on it subpar, and I'm ready to leave. A day of downtime can cost as much as our monthly hosting bill. A month of bad performance is just killing us right now, user and google wise. I'm wondering about running two dedicated boxes for LAMP, one running as the primary Nginx/Apache (proxy pass), and the other as the MySQL box. Running a single box scares the bejesus out of me because who knows how long it will take anyone to fix a raid card or whatever. The idea is to set this up using some sort of failover system using pacemaker and heartbeat. If one server goes down the other can take over for the other running both web and db. There are some good articles over at Linode about this. I have a few DBs that are 1GB+ and would like to load them into memory. Because of this, I'm shying away from a Linode HA setup because for the price I could do it with two dedicated like I described. Am I mad or an idiot? What are people out there doing for pseodu high availability good performance setups under $400/month? I'm a webmaster; I do a lot of things none of it that well :)

  At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. Thursday's sessions will cover the work of the various NIST Cloud Computing Working Groups on Reference Architecture and Taxonomy Standards Acceleration to Jumpstart the Adoption of Cloud Computing (SAJACC) Cloud Security Standards Roadmap Business Use Cases (see Working Groups of NIST Cloud Computing )

• Will you choose JavaFX for Development?

  A few weeks ago, a poll on the home page of java.net caught my eyes, because it was related to JavaFX. Its title: Will you use JavaFX for development once it's fully ported to Mac and Linux platforms? Usually, the results for this type of polls are published on the editor's Daily Blog soon after the poll closes. For some reason, this didn't happen for the JavaFX poll, so I'll take a shot at interpreting the results.  The results found on java.net look pretty close to the following: Although this way to look at the results already gives us an idea of how much traction JavaFX is getting, there are just too many type of answers that make it hard to read. The answers "maybe" and "I don't know" are awfully similar, so I'm tempted to collapse these together. Then there is "No, I don't do that type of development" that just doesn't belong here, as obviously developers who ave chosen this answer don't develop Rich Internet Apps, and therefore I will adapt the % results accordingly. Finally, I've been tempted to combine the top three categories just t simplify the results. This gives me the following chart:  Whether you prefer the original graph, or my simplified take on it, one thing is sure:  less than 10% of developers who have taken this poll plan to stick to another toolkit (presumably Swing or SWT), while the vast majority is inclined to use JavaFX. When you take into account that JavaFX 2.0 is pretty much a "new" API (no more JavaFX Script), I think these are some pretty good results, 6 months after the official release of JavaFX 2.0.

• Designing a system with different business rules for different customers

  My company is rewriting our proprietary business application. The current architecture is poorly done and inflexible. It is coded more procedural oriented as opposed to object oriented. It has become difficult to maintain. Our system is a web application written in .Net Webforms. I am considering ASP.Net MVC for the rewrite. We intend to rewrite it with a good, solid architecture with the goal of maintainability and reusable classes for some of our other systems and services. We would also like the system to be customizable for different customers in the event that we market the system. I am considering redesigning the system based on the layered architecture (Presentation, Business, Data Access layers) described in the Microsoft Patterns and Practices Application Architecture Guide. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff650706.aspx Hopefully this isn't too open ended, but how would you recommend allowing for different business logic/rules for different customers? I'm aware of Windows Workflow Foundation, but from what I've read about it, it seems many business rules could be too complicated to handle there. Also, Can anyone point me to where I can download an example of a .net solution that is based on the Application Architecture Guide? I have already downloaded the Layered Architecture Solution Guidance and the Expense Sample on codeplex. I was looking for something a bit larger and more robust that I could step through the code and see how it works. • The idea of functionN in Scala / Functionaljava

  From brain driven development It turns out, that every Function you’ll ever define in Scala, will become an instance of an Implementation which will feature a certain Function Trait. There is a whole bunch of that Function Traits, ranging from Function1 up to Function22. Since Functions are Objects in Scala and Scala is a statically typed language, it has to provide an appropriate type for every Function which comes with a different number of arguments. If you define a Function with two arguments, the compiler picks Function2 as the underlying type. Also, from Michael Froh's blog You need to make FunctionN classes for each number of parameters that you want? Yes, but you define the classes once and then you use them forever, or ideally they're already defined in a library (e.g. Functional Java defines classes F, F2, ..., F8, and the Scala standard library defines classes Function1, ..., Function22) So we have a list of function traits (Scala), and a list of interfaces (Functional-java) to enable us to have first class funtions. I am trying to understand exactly why this is the case. I know, in Java for example, when I write a method say, public int add(int a, int b){ return a + b; } That I cannot go ahead and write add(3,4,5); ( error would be something like : method add cannot be applied to give types ) We simply have to define an interface/trait for functions with different parameters, because of static typing?
