• Best Approach for Checking and Inserting Records

  In one of our existing C programs which purpose is: Open connection to DB for record in all_record: if record contain certain data: if record is NOT in table A: // see #1 insert record information into table A and B // see #2 Close connection to DB select field from table where field=XXX 2 inserts This is typically done every X months to sync everything up or so I'm told. I've also been told that this process takes roughly a couple of days. There is (currently) at most 2.5million records (though not necessarily all 2.5m will be inserted). One of the table contains 10 fields and the other 5 fields. There isn't much to be done about iterating through the records since that part can't be changed at the moment. What I would like to do is speed up the part where I query MySQL. I'm not sure if I have left out any important details -- please let me know! I'm also no SQL expert so feel free to point out the obvious. I thought about: Putting all the inserts into a transaction (at the moment I'm not sure how important it is for the transaction to be all-or-none or if this affects performance) Using Insert X Where Not Exists Y LOAD DATA INFILE (but that would require I create a (possibly) large temp file) I read that (hopefully someone can confirm) I should drop indexes so they aren't re-calculated. mysql Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.22, for sun-solaris2.10 (sparc) using readline 4.3

  I'm really struggling with hibernate sessions, I never have the result I expect when making a query on a modified session object. I think all my problems are related. I had the same problem with creating an object with an incremental id in a session, then creating another one in the same session before the commit, with a select max(id)+1. But the session gets me the same number of id every time.

• Socket stops communicating

  I'm running python 2.7 code on a Raspberry Pi that receives serial data from an Arduino, processes it, and sends it to a Windows box over a wifi link. The Pi is wired to a Linksys router running in client bridge mode and that router connects over wifi to another Linksys router to which the Windows box is wired. The code in the Pi runs fine for some (apparently) random interval, and then the Pi becomes unreachable from the Windows box. I'm running PUTTY on the the Windows machine to connect to the Pi and when the fail occurs I get a message saying there's been a network error and the Pi is not reachable. Pinging the Pi from the Windows machine works fine until the error, at which time it produces "Reply from 192.168.0.129: Destination host unreachable." The client bridge router to which the Pi is connected remains reachable. I've got the networking code on the Pi wrapped in an exception handler, and when it fails it shows the following: Ethernet problem: Traceback (most recent call last): File "garage.py", line 108, in module s.connect((host, port)) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/socket.py", line 224, in meth return getattr(self._sock,name)(*args) error: [Errno 113] No route to host None The relevant python code looks like: import socket import traceback host = '192.168.0.129' port = 31415 in the setup, and after serial data has been processed: try: bline = strline.encode('utf-8') s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) s.connect((host, port)) s.send(bline) s.close() except: print "Ethernet problem: " print traceback.print_exc() Where strline contains the processed data. As I said, this runs fine for a few hours more or less before failing. Any ideas? EDIT: When PUTTY fails its error message is :Network Error: Software caused connection abort."

• Tracking changed (unsaved) objects

  I have a class which is serialized to and from an XML file when the user decided to open or save. I'm trying to add the typical functionality where when they try to close the form with un-saved changes the form warns them and gives them the option of saving before closing. I've added a HasUnsavedChanges property to my class, which my form checks before closing. However, it's a little annoying that my properties have changed from something like this .. public string Name { get; set; } to this... private string _Name; public string Name { get { return _Name; } set { this._Name = value; this.HasUnsavedChanges = true; } } Is there a better way to track changes to an instance of a class? For example is there some standard way I can "hash" an instance of a class into a value that I can use to compare the most recent version with the saved version without mucking up every property in the class?

• zend studio 5.5.1 on windows xp - won't open!

  I have been using zend studio 5.5.1 for the last year and and a half (on windows xp), with some occasional issues, such as a blank error dialog box when I started the program, but always went away when i restarted my computer, and usually got messages about javaw.exe errors. But now, the program does not open at all. What happens is, I get a little dialog that says Loading project - this is normal... but then, nothing. The zend program item is sitting in the taskbar, but when i click on it - nothing! there is nothing to show. i can right click and press close, but that is all. restarting computer did not help. i just uninstalled it, downloaded again from zend website, and reinstalled. tried opening - get loading box, seems to have loaded, even got tip of the day box. but there is nothing showing behind them. once i closed the tip box, i dont have any indication that zend is open besides the program item in the taskbar. windows task manager says it is running... anyone have a clue? help!!! thanks

  I am trying to use Cookie so that a default style OR a specific style is applied in reference to the anchor tag clicked, even when the browser is closed/reopen. So if the user clicked the second link, close or refresh the browser and reopen, than the style should still be active, if it is their first time the default should apply.   My num_rows is coming back as 0, and I've tried calling it several ways, but I'm stuck. • How can I unobtrusively disable submit buttons with Javascript and Prototype?

  So I found this recommendation, but I can't quite seem to figure out how. But I do need to send along the value of the submit button so the server knows which button I clicked, hence the insert call. (Note: insert does not create a child of the element you call it on.) And then after disabling the submit buttons I need to call the containing form of the submit buttons submit call, as IE will not submit after you disable the button. Does that make sense?

  My 1st post, but i got many great answers and tips from stackoverflow so far. This one was a close call- How does facebook, gmail send the real time notification? but not exactly, so let brainstorm this together. I have CMS system with mail notification when a change is made on the site. Everything wotk very well but i want to prevent multiple notification if somene make another quick change to, let say, fix a typo. Using php mail(), obviously. I've tough of 2 ways, one simple, and one.... let just say, pretty heavy... cough. the 3rd one was inspired by Implementing Email Notification but really doesn't look appealing to me to send bunch of email at once. Use a timestamp to check if another change was made in the 'let say' last 5 minutes. Record the last change, and compare it to the new one. Could be usefull for backup at the same time since i'll have to save the change somewhere, but text can be long and making an sql search would be painfull. Wouldn't it? Use cron to send changes every x minutes... convince me if you ythink it is a suitable solution. Any ideas, comment or suggestion of your own? (Use a string to do this) Counts three things: how many single-character words are in the file, how many short (2 to 5 characters) words are in the file, and how many long (6 or more characters) words are in the file. • Switching application-wide theme programmatically?

  EDIT: Related question here: Multi theme support in android app I'm attempting to get a user-chosen theme and feel like I'm frustratingly close. Defining the theme in AndroidManifest.xml works as it should, but (as best I can tell) can't change based on app preferences: <application android:theme="@style/theme_sunshine" android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> Alternatively, setting it dynamically in each activity also works: someChosenTheme = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this).getString("themePreference", "theme_twilight"); setTheme(someOtherChosenTheme); But that seems messy, and I'd rather set the theme for the entire app in one place. My first thought was to grab the application context as soon as my main activity launches and do it there: getApplicationContext().setTheme(R.style.theme_dummy); As best I can tell[0], this ought to do the trick, but in fact it's not doing anything--the entire app has the default Android style. • Merging multiple docx files to one

  I am developing a desktop application in C#. I have coded a function to merge multiple docx files but it does not work as expected. I don't get the content exactly as how it was in the source files. A few blank lines are added in between. The content extends to the next pages, header and footer information is lost, page margins gets changed, etc.. How can I concatenate docs as it is without and change in it.Any suggestions will be helpful. • Exporting to CSV/Excel in Java

  I'm trying to export data into a CSV file through Java and I've got some code to do it but it doesn't seem to be outputting the CSV file. Could someone tell me what's wrong? What I would like to do is rather than saving the file somewhere, I would like it to be directly exported to the user. EDIT: Just in case it's not clear, I don't want the file to be saved anywhere but would like it to be outputted automatically to the user i.e. they click export and get the "Run/Save results.csv" window and they open the file.   I have a string I want to convert to divs but it doesn't close the div properly.   I have built a parser in Sprache and C# for files using a format I don't control. Using it I can correctly convert: a = "my string"; into my string The parser (for the quoted text only) currently looks like this: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from open in Parse.Char('"').Token() from content in Parse.CharExcept('"').Many().Text().Token() from close in Parse.Char('"').Token() select content; However the format I'm working with escapes quotation marks using "double doubles" quotes, e.g.: a = "a ""string""."; When attempting to parse this nothing is returned. It should return: a ""string"". Additionally a = ""; should be parsed into a string.Empty or similar. I've tried regexes unsuccessfully based on answers like this doing things like "(?:[^;])*", or: public static readonly Parser<string> QuotedText = from content in Parse.Regex("""(?:[^;])*""").Token() This doesn't work (i.e. no matches are returned in the above cases).
