• A quick hello to the Western Kentucky .NET User Group

  A few days back, I got a chance to speak at the Western Kentucky .NET User Group meeting in Murray, Kentucky.  The opportunity came up because the original speaker, Jeff Blankenburg, had another obligation and was thus unable to come to this meeting.  I volunteered to deliver his presentation, which is an overview of MIX10 conference. It was a great experience for me; got to drive around and do a little bit of sight-seeing – can’t say I’ve ever been to Kentucky before, so first trip ever there.  I got to meet the user group’s current lead, Tom Turner and got to chat and discuss about all kinds of stuff with the other members.  Cheers to Matt Gawarecki and Brandon Sharp! The presentation itself mostly covers new features in Visual Studio 2010, which was recently released on April 12 – got to demonstrate Historical Debugging in IntelliTrace, Parallel Stacks, View Call Hierarchy and show some Extensions.  We also covered some of the new functionalities in Silverlight 4 (using webcams, drag & drop support among others) and I got to show off Scott Guthrie’s Windows Phone 7 Twitter app.  Altogether, it was quite a bit to cover in 70 minutes or so, but I think everyone enjoyed it. Jeff provided me with the presentation slides (which I modify a bit) and demo applications; so I’m putting it up here for those that may be interested in downloading them.  Please keep in mind that all the demos were made with VS2010 RC, so there may be slight tweaks to get it to work on the RTM version.

• 12.0.4.3 - Missing Battery Icon, auto Suspend not working, Keyboard shortcuts volume up/down no longer working

  Problems I am experiencing: Battery Icon not showing up unity bar (top right corner). Volume Up/Down/Mute not working. Bluetooth hot keys described above also not working.Brightness up/down keys on this keyboard no longer working (apple wireless keyboard) Laptop no longer suspends when lid is shut. I have to go to 'power' button on top right corner and click on 'Suspend' All was working flawlessly until I did the following: I have recently upgraded to Nvidia propriety driver version 319 {version recommended}. Installed Xscreensaver and then removed it and went back to default screensaver. Done a system update (1st since installing) and now currently running: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic #47~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 16:19:35 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NOTE: Base system was ubuntu 12.04.3 installed from ISO however lsb_release reports "No LSB modules are available" 4.installed psensor. I have check power setting (via Settings) and power setting via dconf-editor and set to recommended settings as described in posts detailing solution to this problem. - I have disabled 1) Nvdia settings at startup and 2) psensor at startup but this does not help. I am using an HP DV7 with 2GB Nvidia card. Not using any fancy graphics features. Recommendations? Thanks.

  The Nordics OTN ACE Tour 2013 with stops in Stockholm, Ballerup/Copenhagen and Oslo is over. A very intense week with plenty of excellent presentations from Lonneke Dikmans, Sten Vesterli, Tim Hall and others. I'm always impressed how much those people know and how good they present. It's such a great learning experience. And there's always some time to talk about weired things apart from the Oracle cosmos. So thanks a lot, folks - it was a pleasure to travel with you. And many many thanks also to the people from ORCAN, DOUG and OUGN. Everything worked out so well. And thanks for the great gifts. the dinners, everything!!! Of course a special thanks to all the people who went to my presentations.   Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I currently have a website and blog and using a limited web hosting plan. When I upload images on my hosting server it consumes a lot of bandwidth and space. So I was thinking of hosting images on some-other image hosting site and direct linking it to my site. I found out few sites like imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, imgur. However, I see all have certain restrictions. The features i am looking for are as follows: 1. At least 10gb space 2. At least 500gb bandwidth (bec I hav very high traffic) 3. Very high speed even during heavy load like 1000 visitors accessing every hour. 4. Ultra reliable servers (99.9% uptime) 5. • Use MvcContrib Grid to Display a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  The past six articles in this series have looked at how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application and how to implement features like sorting, paging, and filtering. In each of these past six tutorials we were responsible for generating the rendered markup for the grid. Our Views included the <table> tags, the <th> elements for the header row, and a foreach loop that emitted a series of <td> elements for each row to display in the grid. While this approach certainly works, it does lead to a bit of repetition and inflates the size of our Views. The ASP.NET MVC framework includes an HtmlHelper class that adds support for rendering HTML elements in a View. An instance of this class is available through the Html object, and is often used in a View to create action links (Html.ActionLink), textboxes (Html.TextBoxFor), and other HTML content. Such content could certainly be created by writing the markup by hand in the View; however, the HtmlHelper makes things easier by offering methods that emit common markup patterns. You can even create your own custom HTML Helpers by adding extension methods to the HtmlHelper class. MvcContrib is a popular, open source project that adds various functionality to the ASP.NET MVC framework. This includes a very versatile Grid HTML Helper that provides a strongly-typed way to construct a grid in your Views. Using MvcContrib's Grid HTML Helper you can ditch the <table>, <tr>, and <td> markup, and instead use syntax like Html.Grid(...). • Are web application usability issues equal to website usability issues?

  I've been reading two books about web usability issues and tests (Rocket Surgery Made Easy¹ and Prioritizing Web Usability²) and they claim some strategies and typical problems about website usability and how to lead them. However, I want to do a web application, and I think I lost track of what I am trying to solve. These two books claim to work with raw websites (e-commerce, business sites, even intranet), but I'm not sure if everything about web usability is applicable to web application usability. They sure talk about always having available (and usable) the Back button, to focus on short information rather than big amounts of text, etc., but they could be inaccurate in deeper problems that may be easier (or just skippable) in regular websites. Has anybody some experience in this field and could tell me if both web applications and websites share their usability issues? Thanks in advance Edit: Quoting Wikipedia, a website is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets, and a web application is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. To sum up, both shows/lets you search/produce information but websites are "simple" in interaction and keep the classics of websites (one-click actions) and the other one is closer to desktop applications in the meaning of their uses and ways of interaction (double click, modal windows, asynchronous calls [to keep you in the same "environment" instead of reloading it] etc.). I don't know if this clarifies the difference. Edit 2: Quoting @Victor and myself, a website is anything running in your browser, but a web application is somewhat running in your browser that could be running in your desktop, with similar behaviors and features. Gmail is a web application that could replace Outlook. GDocs could replace Office. Grooveshark could replace your music player, etc.

• Does F# kill C++?

  Okay, so the title may be a little misleading… but I am currently travelling and so have had very little time and access to resources to do much fsharping – this has meant that I am right now missing my favourite new language. I was interested to see this post on Stack Overflow this evening concerning the performance of the F# language. The person posing the question asked 8 key points about the F# language, namely… How well does it do floating-point? Does it allow vector instructions How friendly is it towards optimizing compilers? How big a memory foot print does it have? Does it allow fine-grained control over memory locality? Does it have capacity for distributed memory processors, for example Cray? What features does it have that may be of interest to computational science where heavy number processing is involved? Are there actual scientific computing implementations that use it? Now, I don’t have much time to look into a decent response and to be honest I don’t know half of the answers to what he is asking, but it was interesting to see what was put up as an answer so far and would be interesting to get other peoples feedback on these questions if they know of anything other than what has been covered in the answer section already.

Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. • What to learn to make a photo gallery site like this? [closed]

  I started a Wordpress site for my blog but now I want to start another domain for sharing my photos. I used to use Flickr but it requires you to sign up for Flickr Pro if you want to upload over a certain amount of photos. Since I don't want to pay for that, I'm looking to create a photo gallery site like this: http://10mmgalore.com/ or http://www.shuttermaki.com/ But how do you go about with that? Would I be able to install Wordpress and find a theme like that? And/Or are there any Wordpress plugins that I can install to make it like look like that? Or do I need different tools and platforms asides from Wordpress? So can someone list the features, tools and information that I need to make a photo gallery site? The main functions that I want for my site is to have a picture in the middle and when the user clicks on the photo, it goes to the next photo; or there are left and right arrows that users can click to the next photo. I just want to create an album website for my 365 days project (a photo a day). It doesn't have to be as fancy as the sites mentioned above. Thank you!
