  I'm using PostgreSQL. I have a table with 3 fields person, recipe and ingredient person = creator of the recipe recipe = the recipe ingredient = one of the ingredients in the recipe I want to create a query which results in every person who whenever has added carrot to a recipe, the person must also have added salt to the same recipe. More than one person can have created the recipe, in which case the person who added the ingredient will be credited for adding the ingredient. Sometimes the ingredient is used more than once, even by the same person. If this the table: person1, rec1, carrot person1, rec1, salt person1, rec1, salt person1, rec2, salt person1, rec2, pepper person2, rec1, carrot person2, rec1, salt person2, rec2, carrot person2, rec2, pepper person3, rec1, sugar person3, rec1, carrot Then I want this result: person1 Because this person is the only one who whenever has added carrot also have added salt.

  I was wondering if anyone can tell me if MongoDB or CouchDB are ready for a production environment. I'm now looking at these storage solutions (I'm favouring MongoDB at the moment), however these projects are quite young and so I foresee that I'm going to have to work quite hard to convince my manager that we should adopt this new technology. What I'd like to know is: 1) Who is using MongoDB or CouchDB today in a production environment? 2) How are you using MongoDB/CouchDB? 3) What problems (if any) did you come across when you adopted this new storage mechanism (and how did you overcome them)? 4) How did you deal with any migration issues that you had to deal with? 5) Do you have any good/bad experiences with either of these solutions that you'd like to share? • Rails - Scalable calculation model

  I currently have a calculation structure in my rails app that has models metric, operand and operation_type. Presently, the metric model has many operands, and can perform calculations based on the operation_type (e.g. sum, multiply, etc.), and each operand is defined as being right or left (i.e. so that if the operation is division, the numerator and denominator can be identified). Presently, an operand is always an attribute of some model, e.g. @customer.sales.selling_price.sum. In order to make this scalable, in need to allow an operand to be either an attribute of some kind, or the results of a previous operation, i.e. an operand can be a metric. I have included a diagram of how my models currently look: Can anyone assist me with the most elegant way of allowing an operand to be an actual operand, or another metric? Thanks! EDIT: It seems based on the only answer so far that perhaps polymorphic associations are the way to go on this, but the answer is so brief I have no idea how they could be used in this way - can anyone elaborate? EDIT 2: OK, I think I'm getting somewhere - essentially i presently have a metric, which has_many operands, and an operand has_many metrics. I need a polymorphic self join, where a metric can also have many metrics - do I need to call this something else, perhaps calculated_metrics, so that the metric model can use itself? That would leave me with a situation where a metric has_many operands, and a metric has many calculated_metrics.

  CouchDB is great, I like its replication functionality, but it's a bit larger and slower when used in desktop application. As I tested in intel duo core cpu, 12 seconds to load 10000 docs 10 seconds to insert 10000 doc, but need 20 seconds to update view, so total is 30 seconds Is there any No SQL implementation which has the same replication functionality, but the size is very small, and the speed is quite good( 1 second to load 10000 docs). • PHP - Drilling down Data and Looping with Loops

  I'm currently having difficulty finding a way of making my loops work. I have a table of data with 15 minute values. I need the data to pull up in a few different increments $filters=Array('Yrs','Qtr','Day','60','30','15'); I think I have a way of finding out what I need to be able to drill down to but the issue I'm having is after the first loop to cycle through all the Outter most values (ex: the user says they want to display by Hours, each hour should be able to have a "+" that will then add a new div to display the half hour data, then each half hour data have a "+" to display the 15 minute data upon request. Now I can just program the number of outputs for each value (6 different outputs) just in-case... but isn't there a way I can make it do the drill down for each one in a loop? so I only have to code one output once and have it just check if there are any more intervals after it and check for those? I'm sure I'm just overlooking some very simple way of doing this but my brain isn't being clever today. Sorry in advance if this is a simple solution. I guess the best way I could think of it as a reply on a form. How you would check to see if it's a reply of a reply, and then if that reply has any replys...etc for output. Can anyone help or at least point me in the right direction? Or am I stuck coding each possible check? Thanks in advance!

  Hi all I need to connect 2 tables from 2 mysql databases that have 2 different connection strings and each is on the different server. I have this query: cmd = new MySqlCommand(String.Format("INSERT INTO {0} (a,b,c,d) SELECT (a,b,c,d) FROM {1}", ConfigSettings.ReadSetting("main_table"), ConfigSettings.ReadSetting("main_table")), con); So both table have the same columns. Thats why I have only one ConfigSettings.ReadSetting("main_table") for both of them as they are same. I have 2 connection strings and each is pointing to their server: con.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["con1"].ConnectionString; con2.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["con2"].ConnectionString; How to make this cmd to be workking with 2 different connection strings and with the same name for the table. Table name will change that's why it is saved in config.

  I am making a notification system so that when users in a group perform an action, it will notify all the other users in the group. I want the notification to be marked "read" or "unread" for each user of the group. With that, I can easily retreive any unread notification for a user and display it.   Currently in my application I have a single table that is giving me a bit of trouble. The issue at hand is I have a value object that is mapped to this table. When the data is returned to me as an array of value objects, I have to then loop through this array and begin my recursion by matching the ParentID to parent ObjectID's. The column ParentID is either null (acts a parent) or it holds the value of an ObjectID. I know there has to be a better way to create this data structure so that I do not have to do recursive loops to match ParentID's with their ObjectID's. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. • Using NVL function in SQL, please help!

  I'm needing to select first and last name in a table which is working fine in the following SQL, but the part that isn't working is the NVL function. The file should show all pilots at a company that fly helicopters and IF they don't have a licence the field HT_NAME should come up as 'N/A' and the field for end hours flown should be 0. I've put NVL function in as my text details but it still isn't working. Have i made a syntax error? Help would be appreciated.   Hey! I just want to know your guys opinion on using join tables within the zend framework. Of course you can use relations by defining a referenceMap and dependentTables and stuff, or using setIntegrityCheck(false) within a db select(). The setIntegrityCheck version seems a little bit dirty to me, but the other version is not very suitable for big querys and joining many tables...
