• Wireless internet connection connects but internet does not work (no packets received). Wired does.

  When I connect my PC via ethernet cable to my ADSL router it works fine. When I connect via Wireless it connects and the internet will work for a random amount of time and then stop working. It stays connected with a strong signal but no packets are received. My laptop/iphone are right next to it and wireless works fine. If I open the Wireless USB status, it says it is connected to my SSID with full strength (54 mps - I am 3 meteres away from my router) and the activty shows as Packets 594 SENT and 105 RECEIVED (this goes up VERY slowly) I have tried the following: Turned off anitvirus and firewall completely. Tested the wifi signal- I am writing this on my laptop which is next to my PC and also has full wifi strength. Tried a different wireless adapter - I dug out an old PCI wireless card - it does the exact same thing. Compared all wireless settings to my laptop. I can ping google.com and it replies (sometimes with packet loss) When I reboot the PC it will connect for a minute or two (random time) and then just stops again. I tried Firefox, IE etc. no joy I have updated all latest versions (Netgear WG111v2) and drivers Checked Event Log - nothing unusual Ping the router (and even connect as admin for the few minutes when the internet does work) Changed the MTU down to 1200 using DrTCP Checked Device Manager for conflicts - none. I ping the router from the PC (192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.1) and it replies with 4 packets. BUT, on my router admin page (which I access via http on my laptop wirelessly) - if I ping 192.168.0.10 all packets timeout (pinging my laptop 192.168.0.12 works fine) My router admin page shows the leased IP address for 192.168.0.10 (ie it is definitely talking to the router initially) Now I am out of ideas - please help. I think it is an OS/Software issue as I have tried 2 different wireless adapaters (PCI and USB) with the same result but all other wireless devices work fine around mine). It's not the firewall. It is getting assigned an IP address correctly (my PC gets 192.168.0.10, my laptop is .12) It is assigned by DHCP. As soon as I plug in the ethernet cable it all works fine. Repairing the adapter sometimes helps but it will always stop working after a random time. The wireless adapter always shows as connected with Excellent signal but the internet does not work. I am running Windows XP SP3 and have tried a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: The internet seems to be working, it is just either sending packets too small or slow to work (some small pages load bits of them very slowly but then hang). • How can I quickly change display settings from dual monitor to single monitor on laptop?

  I have my laptop (running Windows XP SP3) at work hooked up to an external monitor. Whenever I unplug the external monitor (time to go home!) I have to manually change the display settings. This takes time and involves a lot of clicks. Is there a way to automate changing these settings? I'm thinking of a hotkey solution or a little application that I can start with Launchy to toggle between two profiles. I use the MultiMon tool for "extending" the taskbar to the second monitor - will I have to give that up?

• External USB Fingerprint Reader for Pre-boot Authentication for Dell Laptop

  My company just purchased several Dell Latitude E6500 laptops with docking stations and external monitors. These laptops have a fingerprint scanner located next to the keyboard. DOCKED users who prefer to use the included fingerprint scanner for pre-boot authentication are forced to open their laptop in order to access the scanner. This is an inconvenience when the laptop is docked. We are looking for an external, usb fingerprint scanner, that will work with the current preboot authentication setup. I assume that this scanner would have to access the existing credentials for authentication....wherever they are stored. So we would require something that would work PRE-BOOT, use the existing credentials, and not interfere with usage when the machine was not docked, such as when the laptop is being used at home. Does anyone have experience with this scenario? Thanks.

• Anomaly with bash PS1 definition

  My root and admin user both have the same .bashrc file. Why does the .bashrc file have this difference in prompts? How do I get the admin user to also use the xterm version? How would I test that condition? If I run echo $TERM while running as the admin user I get xterm so as far as I can tell, it should be using the xterm version for the admin user.

Create a Top Nav bar for the home page. You need to modify the Onet.xml file by adding NavBar Child into NavBars element. • Program to download .torrent file from a Magnet URI?

  I have a Torrent app running on my home server that has an outdated but pretty useful web interface. The one problem is that it doesn't take magnet links, only .torrent files. I'd like to continue using this and not have to bother with finding a different program. Given that magnet links are just a pointer to download the torrent file from the swarm, I'm hoping there's a program out there that will take a magnet link and spit out a .torrent only. I know I could put it into µTorrent and grab the file from the app's directory, but that's a bit roundabout, and I'd like something that will do it semi-unattented. Preferably for OS X, but Linux (or a web app) would work too.

• updatedb & locate command problem - Files from external hard drive are no longer indexed after rebooting

  Files from my external hard drive are no longer indexed after rebooting. I have to remount and then run # updatedb after each reboot. The problem is updatedb takes a few minutes for my external hard drives. Is there any way I can retain indexing for my externals after I reboot so that the locate command can search through my externals? • Cygwin and zsh: removing "path prefix line"

  I've installed Cygwin under Windows 7 and I've added the line exec zsh -l to C:\cygwin\home\Viktor\.bash_profile. Problem is I still get that ugly new line for every command I write: (Viktor@INET)[2] ~ $ cd D: (Viktor@INET)[3] /cygdrive/d $ ls $RECYCLE.BIN Program Files (x86) System Volume Information Viktor xampp (Viktor@INET)[4] /cygdrive/d $ _ As horizontal space is no concern with 1920 pixels I would like to have the "Linux appearance", something like this viktor@inet> _ or whatever is default. One command shouldn't take three lines. And how do I change the colors? Edit. I also have Console2 installed, which I have set to use Cygwin, if that's any help.

• Android tethering question

  Hi there, I have a Motorola Droid 1 with Android 2.2 on it. I found something odd that I don't understand why it works. If I plug my phone into my home computer which is Windows 7 and I turn on the tethering ability, I am met with a Verizon captive portal and it tells me I need to pay for a tethering plan (which I don't have). Now the weird thing, if I plug the same phone into my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop and enable tethering it works and can get on the internet with no captive portal showing up. The only thing I could notice that was different about the connections was Windows connected to the phone with an NDIS driver and Linux connected to the phone with what I think is a raw device mapping. Would that have anything to do with it?

• Online Backup strategy for family individuals

  The majority of my family, including myself, uses Dropbox and Syncplicity free accounts for our syncing needs. However our backup strategy is pretty non-existent, we all have access (via webDav) to our qnap nas located at home, however we copy files accross when we can remember to do so, terrible I know. Is there tools like CrashPlan or Spideroak that allows each the accomodation of each family members syncing and back-up needs under one main account? I'm not sure how this would work, as each family member would need a seperate sub-account or would I manage each computer's syncing and backup lists from a single account? Any thoughts?

  I'm following this tutorial to setup a Postfix/Dovecot mail server with Postfix Admin as a web front end. As regards directory structure for virtual mail users, the author of the tutorial writes: Virtual mail users are those that do not exist as Unix system users. They thus don't use the standard Unix methods of authentication or mail delivery and don't have home directories. That is how we are managing things here: mail users are defined in the database created by Postfix Admin rather than existing as system users. Mail will be kept in subfolders per domain and account under /var/vmail - e.g. [email protected] will have a mail directory of /var/vmail/example.com/me. • Too sell or give for free

  Hello everyone! I am currently making a game that I was originally planning to sell. It is a simple 2D arcade style game for the PC. I've seen many indie games become popular and generate revenue from advertisements, but the game itself remains free. I need some advice on whether or not I should sell my game, release it for free with advertisements, or ask for donations and keep the game free. I feel that my game is fun, but of course the graphics aren't tip top because I am a programmer, not an artist. I just take screenshots of 3D models I get from Turbosquid and crop around it to make a sprite. Also, and I could be very wrong about this, it seems that there are more legal issues surrounding selling a game than making it free and generating revenue from advertisement, or asking for donations. If I am wrong, someone please correct me. Also, I am very interested in generating some revenue for my work, but that isn't at the very top of my list. I am in my last year of high school, soon to be going to college, and I am going to major in computer science/software engineering. So I am trying to gain some preliminary experience at home by coding stuff every day. One way of getting this experience is by making this game. So what do you think? What route should I take? What has worked well with other indie games? Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

  Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

• Blank screen after Switch User or Resume

  About half the time when I switch users or resume from standby or resume the screen goes blank (black). If I work the cursor keys I can hear the system bell when it gets to the end of the user list. I can also successfully login, going from memory, but screen stays black. Sometimes closing and re-opening the lid will light up the screen again. Pressing the special Function key to enable/disable external monitor connection has no effect [Fn]-[F5],[Fn]-[F6]. If none of the previous work I need to put the computer into hibernation or full power off to restore screen function. If I watch closely when switching users I think I can see the screen initially start to light up and then quickly fade to black. The computer is an Acer Aspire 3500, model ZL6, running Ubuntu 10.10 installed 2 days ago. No proprietary drivers are in use. I'll provide a list of hardware details as soon as I can figure out how to generate that (didn't there used to be an entry for hardware details under the System menu?). Possibly related questions: No resume after Hibernate or Standby When I resume from suspension - the screen is blank Switch user fails to complete successfully For what it's worth, blank after resume also used to happen occasionally when the laptop was running XP-Home, but nowhere near as often, perhaps 6 or 8 times a year. UPDATE: I found System Administration System Testing and ran the Monitor test. It went very very dark, but the window elements could be discerned, and the whole screen flashed (from very very dark to black). On the third repeat of that same test the screen went to full blaupck and stayed there. Moving the mouse, via touchpad, or touch keys did not wake it up again. I had to close the lid and put the computer into hibernate, and press the power button to restore it.   hi all I have 3 PC's at home (with Win XP, Win 7 & Win 7) and a router. I am always connected to the internet through the router (PPoE connection). My problem is that sometimes when I want to search or open a page, my browser tells me that the server cannot be reached, as if I don't have a connection to the internet. Other times it logs me out from messenger, but browsing still works. FTP download/upload also works. If i disable and enable the LAN then all works fine. Anyone got any idea besides re-installing OS? thanks

  I just bought an HP Pavilion g6 laptop and I installed Natty Narwhal alongside Windows 7. In Windows 7, my WiFi works perfect but in Ubuntu it absolutely (no matter what I do) won't detect my home WiFi network. • What to do with a Blowfish Key?

  I just completed backing up 8 years of my Gmail using http://gmvault.org I selected the --encrypt option which uses Blowfish encryption. According to their site: Emails can be encrypted with the option -e --encrypt. With that option, the Blowfish encryption is used to crypt your emails and chats and the first time you activate it, a secret key is randomly generated and stored in $HOME/.gmvault/token.sec. Keep great care of the secret key as if you loose or delete it your stored emails won't be readable anymore !!! I'm using OSX Lion. I'm a software engineer but far from an encryption expert. What should I do with this key? It seems like leaving it where it is now (alongside the emails) sort of misses the point of encrypting them to begin with.

• VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

  I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network. When I ran the VPN software to connect to the work network, the internet access went away again.] (Initially posted this on stackoverflow.com, but it was put on hold as off-topic by several users, and was advised to ask here instead)
