• Critiquing my first Python script

  A little bit of background: I'm building an inverted index for a search engine. I was originally using PHP, but because of the amount of times I needed to write to disk, I wanted to make a threaded indexer. There's a problem with that because PHP is not thread safe. I then tried Java, but I ended up with at least 20 try catch blocks because of the JSON data structure I was using and working with files. The code was just too big and ugly. Then I figured I should pick up some Python because it's flexible like PHP but also thread safe. Though I'm open to all criticism, what I'd like to learn is the shortcuts that the Python language/library provides that I skipped over. This is a PHP-afide Python script because all I really did was translate the PHP script line by line to what I thought was it's Python equivalent. Thanks. http://pastebin.com/xrg7rf9w

I have to login to a remote server(windows 2003) and open up Sql Management Studio and Log on to the another server(SQL server using the IP address). I have to open a specific store procedure and change one of the parameter to true and exceute the stored Procedure. I know it is very easy to accomplish but, where do I start? • How can I find out which version of emacs introduced a function?

  I want to write a .emacs that uses as much of the mainline emacs functionality as possible, falling back gracefully when run under previous versions. I've found through trial and error some functions that didn't exist, for example, in emacs 22 but now do in emacs 23 on the rare occasion that I've ended up running my dotfiles under emacs 22. However, I'd like to take a more proactive approach to this, and have subsets of my dotfiles that only take effect when version = <some-threshold> (for example). The function I'm focusing on right now is scroll-bar-mode but I'd like a general solution. I have not seen a consistent source for this info; I've checked the gnu.org online docs, the function code itself, and so far nothing. How can I determine this, without keeping every version of emacs I want to support kicking around?

  I'd like to create an assembly in memory, using an using the classes in Reflection.Emit Currently, I can create the assembly and get it's bytes using something like AssemblyBuilder builder = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.DefineDynamicAssembly(..., AssemblyBuilderAccess.Save); ... create the assembly ... builder.Save(targetFileName); using(FileStream fs = File.Open(targetFileName, FileMode.Open)) { ... read the bytes from the file stream ... } However, it does so by creating a file on the local filesystem. I don't actually need the file, just the bytes that would be in the file. Is it possible to create the assembly without writing any files?

• Jquery UI accordion question - how would you approach this?

  I am using jquery UI accordion control in one of my apps asp.net apps. The data for the accordion comes from a database, and each database record has an ID, a Title Field and a content field. The title is the heading, and the content is the data that shows up when the draw is opened... I'd like to be able to call my page like this: http://www.mywebsite.com/mypage.aspx?ID=123 and have it display all the data (as it does now), but then have the default 'drawer' of the accordion open to the section that corresponds to the ID number passed in on the url...there are about 50 sections on the page. Any suggestions on how to approach this? My questions is specific to the jquery accordion function, the rest I know. So where would be the best place to 'tag' the drawer with the unique ID's, and then what is the snippet of javascript code (I assume) that I would use 'open' that drawer based on the ID passed in?? • Asp.Net MVC2 TekPub Starter Site methodology question

  Ok I've just ran into this and I was only supposed to be checking my emails however I've ended up watching this (and not far off subscribing to TekPub). http://tekpub.com/production/starter Now these app is a great starting point, but it raises one issue for me and the development process I've been shown to follow (rightly or wrongly). There is no conversion from the LinqToSql object when passing data to the view. Are there any negitives to this? The main one I can see is with validation, does this cause issues when using MVC's built in validation as this is somthing we use extensivly. Because we are using the built in objects generated by LinqToSql how would one go about adding validation, like [Required(ErrorMessage="Name is Required")] public string Name {get;set;} Interested to understand the benifits of this methodology and any negitives that, should we take it on, experiance through the development process.

• Tabexpansion function Does Not Resolve Variable

  I'm attempting to override and implement my own TabExpansion. In the function I want to parse the contents of $psise.CurrentFile.Editor.Text when a certain $lastword criteria is matched. The issue I have is that the variable $psise.CurrentFile.Editor.Text is resolved to the contents of my TabExpansion function rather than whatever text is in a PowerShell ISE tab. Here's simple test function. Open an ISE tab and paste the following tabexpansion function definition: function tabexpansion { $psise.CurrentFile.Editor.Text } Run the script in ISE. Next open another tab in ISE type some text and press the tab key The output will be function tabexpansion { $psise.CurrentFile.Editor.Text } Rather than whatever text was in the second tab. Is there any way to get $psise.CurrentFile.Editor.Text to resolve at runtime when used within a tabexpansion function?

  in my project there's a service that listens for changes in the connectivity. When wifi is switched off to on then it gets called. The problem it's that i'm using a fragment and inside a fragment there's a button with the setonclicklistener(); and onclick(); SOMETIMES when i touch the button then the service receives an intent that the connectivity has changed (the method gets called without any reason...).   What's a simple and canonical way to read an entire file into memory in Scala? (Ideally, with control over character encoding.) The best I can come up with is: scala.io.Source.fromPath("file.txt").getLines.reduceLeft(_+_) or am I supposed to use one of Java's god-awful idioms, the best of which (without using an external library) seems to be: import java.util.Scanner import java.io.File new Scanner(new File("file.txt")).useDelimiter("\\Z").next() From reading mailing list discussions, it's not clear to me that scala.io.Source is even supposed to be the canonical I/O library. I wrote a simple python program to do the trick with graphviz, but it gives me segmentation fault and I don't know why, if the graph is too big or if i'm missing something. • Jqm is not a function

  Hi all, I'm having some trouble with Jquery and JqModal, and I hope you are able to help, since I've been struggling for hours.. Having a single button element with an onclick action running my method "test" (shown below): $('#picture_form').jqm({ajax: '/test.php'}); $('#picture_form').jqmShow(); This will load the ajax content of test.php into my div element picture_form, shown using JqModal as its supposed to! Though when I close this window, and re-clicks the button I'm getting the error: $("#picture_form").jqm is not a function. As a solution I've tried to use the JqModal trigger function, and this leaves me able to open and close the JqModal windows as many times as I want to. Sadly I can only call the 'trigger' using test environment, in my production code I have to open the JqModal window using a function.. Does anyone have a clue why this 'bug' appears when calling the opening when using a function? Thanks in advance

  Hi in my application there is web browser control to show some static html pages. The pages are displayed properly. but images are not displayed.. I tried with changing src-path but no success. my htmlpages folder is located at bin folder. And i am assigning it as. FileStream source = new FileStream(@"..\HtmlPages\supportHtml.html", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); if i open html files in browser, the images are displayed properly.. So, What is the correct path for images..?? If i set full path to src attribute of <img> tag..it works. but i think its not a proper way. :( EDIT: If i assign d:\myapp\bin\HtmlPages\support.gif then image is displayed. And if i assign "..\HtmlPages\support.gif" or "support.gif" image is not shown.

• How to save big "database-like" class in python

  Hi there, I'm doing a project with reasonalby big DataBase. It's not a probper DB file, but a class with format as follows: DataBase.Nodes.Data=[[] for i in range(1,1000)] f.e. this DataBase is all together something like few thousands rows. Fisrt question - is the way I'm doing efficient, or is it better to use SQL, or any other "proper" DB, which I've never used actually. And the main question - I'd like to save my DataBase class with all record, and then re-open it with Python in another session. Is that possible, what tool should I use? cPickle - it seems to be only for strings, any other? In matlab there's very useful functionality named save workspace - it saves all Your variables to a file that You can open at another session - this would be vary useful in python!

• Data table to Excel conversion leaves my server side button non responsive in SharePoint WebPart

  We have a web part on which we display some data in a grid. We are exporting grid's underlying datatable to Excel and displaying Open - Save - Cancel dialouge box on click of a server side button. Following is the code we are executing on click of server side button. this.Page.Response.Clear(); this.Page.Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=MyTasks.xls"); this.Page.Response.ContentType = "application/ms-excel"; this.Page.Response.Write("...here goes my well formated html...."); this.Page.Response.End(); Problem is that when i click on Cancel in the diaglouge box then dialogue box to Open/Save excel disappears but all the server side buttons placed on my web part becomes non responsive, on click of any of those buttons their server side click event does not get fired !!! Any idea ? Thanks.

• Should Python 2.6 on OS X deal with multiple easy-install.pth files in $PYTHONPATH?

  I am running ipython from sage and also am using some packages that aren't in sage (lxml, argparse) which are installed in my home directory. I have therefore ended up with a $PYTHONPATH of $HOME/sage/local/lib/python:$HOME/lib/python Python is reading and processing the first easy-install.pth it finds ($HOME/sage/local/lib/python/site-packages/easy-install.pth) but not the second, so eggs installed in $HOME/lib/python aren't added to the path. On reading the off-the-shelf site.py, I cannot for the life of me see why it's doing this. Can someone enlighten me? Or advise how to nudge Python into reading both easy-install.pth files? Consolidating both into one .pth file is a viable workaround for now, so this question is mostly for curiosity value.
