  • What do you need to master a language and its technology? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: how to really master a programming language Let say about Java(just a sample, you can talk about C#, PHP, C++ ... it's just similar) and 10 (ten) levels, 1 is newbie and 10 is master. How can you identify someone at which level based on his knowledge? I do not tend to compare languages, I do tend to know what indicate a master or a newbie in a language and its (language's) based technology. Yeah, I know there aren't on earth a language stand alone, it always come with a technology with it. Let say in Java, you can memorize all of its keyword and syntax in just few days, but to know it (I mean do something with it effectively), you must read the Oracle (Sun) javadoc many many times (I'm not mention the 3rd party product yet).

  • 12.04 to 12.10 upgrade failure

    In upgrading 12.04 to 12.10 via system upgrade when the system rebooted all I got was my desk-top without any command icons. Now all my files are locked into 12.10 and no way to retrieve them. I finally reinstalled 12.04 in a new partition but I don't have the knowledge on how to access 12.10 from it. Being a newbie with Linux I feel like I have all thumbs. I'd like to correct 12.10 but have to idea on what the problem is or how to access it. HELP!!!

    I'm trying to start unit testing (not using any testing frameworks) for my javascripts. Here's one example of it. var obj = {}; obj.disableBtn = function ($btn, style) { $btn.attr('disabled','disabled').addClass('disabled').removeClass(style); }; The use case is as such: obj.disableBtn($('.submit'), 'btn-blue'); What it does is simply add the disabled attribute, add the disabled class, and remove the btn-blue style. Please advise how would a typical test case look like in this case. I have a little knowledge on testing using assert(), but have no idea how to go about it when it involves verifying the result on HTML elements.

  • C# WPF to Embedded programming transition

    I've been learning C# .NET Framework for around 4-6 months (still starting) using some books, and have currently made my way up to Collections and Generics. I'll probably spend the next two months covering the rest up to LINQ and/or Garbage Collections. The thing is, I started to get interested in embedded systems and found out that you can use C# to code it through .NET MF, which mean I wouldn't have to learn C or C++. So, I would like to know if the knowledge I'll have by that time (2 months) will be enough to start working on Embedded (using C# .NET Micro Framework and Netduino) or I should probably see more about plain C# like Multithreading, async and other advanced features ? I want use embedded just as a hobby, at least by now, as I'll still have a long way through university. Although, I'll probably pick it as a career then. Thanks in advance!

    I remember reading a post inquiring the basic/advanced skills required for embedded engineer works. The top comment divides the answer into two parts, the basic level/design level ,not purely coding(something like this...). Then another level : writing application(all about programming). For each level/category, the top comment talks about the necessary skills/knowledge/college courses(for me at least) .     I have downloaded an ISO file of UBANTU 12.10 x86 from the official website (www.ubantu.com). When I tried to install it everything was going good till I got the error message something like "the media you are using is probably currupt or you have an hard disk error . It did't told me what to do. I am already running WINDOW 7 ultimate in my pc and it is running fine i have tested my hard disk for error and no errors was found by "system mechanic pro 11" . after that i tried to install my WINDOW 7 on the same partition and it was successful . Even now I am unable to install UBANTU. It is my first experience with UBANTU so I don't know what to do. please guide me . my email is [email protected]

I really want to get started and everywhere I looked this seemed like the book for beginners with an assumed zero-knowledge in programming2.   • Does low latency code sometimes have to be "ugly"?

    (This is mainly aimed at those who have specific knowledge of low latency systems, to avoid people just answering with unsubstantiated opinions). Do you feel there is a trade-off between writing "nice" object orientated code and writing very fast low latency code? For instance, avoiding virtual functions in C++/the overhead of polymorphism etc- re-writing code which looks nasty, but is very fast etc? It stands to reason- who cares if it looks ugly (so long as its maintainable)- if you need speed, you need speed? I would be interested to hear from people who have worked in such areas.

    Hi I am getting ready to create my first web aplication.I have some knowledge of databases but I have never used databases with relationship created beetween them and also I am not sure how to acces the data in the relationship.My experience is limited to basic CRUD applications and working on simple tables with no realtionship using PHP and MySql. For example I will be creating a login system and for each user I would like to create a profile page that store different data(name , address , profile image etc.).Some of the info will be the same in both tables so there is no point in creating the same table twice.   • Objective-C library recommendation for AES-256 in CTR mode

    Hello, I'm looking for recommendations on an Objective-C library for AES-256 encryption in CTR mode. I have a database full of data encrypted with another library using CTR and seems the included CCCrypt only supports ECB or CBC with PKCS#7. Any idea on the best portable library I should use? I'm not looking to port the original implementation as I don't have the required knowledge in cryptography and hence, that's-a-bad-idea (tm). Thanks!

    Any suggestions on how to become a better Android programmer? I'm past intro tutorials, which mainly focus on how to use pieces of the SDK, but I still struggle to structure big Android apps. Obviously the best use of my time is continuing with my coding projects, but I'm wondering if I should be learning more about Android particulars, solidifying my somewhat shaky Java knowledge, going back to object-oriented fundamentals or patterns...? Pointers to resources (books, example apps, sites) you've found helpful would be great.

    I noticed that in Jeff's slides "Challenges in Building Large-Scale Information Retrieval Systems", which can also be downloaded here: http://research.google.com/people/jeff/WSDM09-keynote.pdf, a method of integers compression called "group varint encoding" was mentioned. It was said much faster than 7 bits per byte integer encoding (2X more). I am very interested in this and looking for an implementation of this, or any more details that could help me implement this by myself. I am not a pro and new to this, and any help is welcome!
