  PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much.   I've been doing MVC for a few months now using the CodeIgniter framework in PHP but I still don't know if I'm really doing things right. What I currently do is: Model - this is where I put database queries (select, insert, update, delete). I'm working on it alone so I don't really have someone to review my code for me and point out the wrong things in it so I'm posting it here in hopes that someone could point out the wrong things that I've done in here. I'm also looking for some guidelines in writing MVC code like what are the things that should be and shouldn't be included in views, models and controllers. How else can I improve the current code that I have right now. I've written some really terrible code before(duplication of logic, etc.) that's why I want to improve my code so that I can easily maintain it in the future. Thanks!

• Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

  I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

• I have Ubuntu only and need to install Windows

  I had Windows 8, I installed Ubuntu for a new OS, Then I want to sadly go back to Windows , I have a Windows Vista *.iso but I can't boot from it. When I try to extract the '.iso file and have the contents on my USB so it can boot up , When I restart and click F9 for my Boot Device Options , Only my Hard Drive and CD ROM are there but my "Generic Flash Drive" is not , But when I do not have Windows Vista '.iso on it , It will show up in the list. How can I make a partition of some sort, Provide instructions since I am new at this all , then I need to be able to use the Windows Vista installer and install Windows Vista, I would like Dual-Boot if possible. Info: I have the HP 2000 Laptop (Mine was removed from the Best Buy Website so the closest laptop to the specifications and the design is the link at the bottom) I am running Ubuntu 12.10. I have 4GB of RAM , 220 GB in my Hard Drive left , I have a USB Flash Drive which works sometimes , other times it fails. • Ubuntu 12.04 Full Screen without Unity Hub

  I couldn't find an answer for this, so I thought I would try here. My problem is, I have some games on Wine that play in full screen mode but I can't really get them in full screen mode. When they start up, they end up with the GUI's "HUD" overlapping the game which is really annoying and well kills the option to play the game. This has also happened in a few of my Linux programs as well. While I wrote its a problem with Unity, it really isn't limited to this though. I've done full screen mode on Unity and had the Unity side bar and top menu overlap, I've used Gnome and had the same issue happen, Gnome menu is in the top, Cinnamon had the same issue. Sometimes if I Alt-Tab out of it and back into the program it MIGHT remove the HUD but that doesn't always work, and lets face it, full screen mode that is killed by the GUI just isn't something that can really be ignored. Any suggestions or help would be highly welcomed. • What is the standard way of using Q15 values?

  To process 8-bit pixels, to do things like gamma correction without losing information, we normally upsample the values, work in 16 bits or whatever, and then downsample them to 8 bits. Now, this is a somewhat new area for me, so please excuse incorrect terminology etc. For my needs I have chosen to work in "non-standard" Q15, where I only use the upper half of the range (0.0-1.0), and 0x8000 represents 1.0 instead of -1.0. This makes it much easier to calculate things in C. But I ran into a problem with SSSE3. It has the PMULHRSW instruction which multiplies Q15 numbers, but it uses the "standard" range of Q15 is [-1,1-2?¹5], so multplying (my) 0x8000 (1.0) by 0x4000 (0.5) gives 0xC000 (-0.5), because it thinks 0x8000 is -1. This is quite annoying. What am I doing wrong? Should I keep my pixel values in the 0000-7FFF range? This kind of defeats the purpose of it being a fixed-point format. Is there a way around this? Maybe some trick? Is there some kind of definitive treatise on Q15 which discusses all this?

• Ubuntu 13.10. After login, no desktop displayed. Two Nvidia Graphics Cards, Four Monitors

  I am working on an issue with my Ubuntu 13.10 installation. I am attempting to get 4 monitors up and running but I am having some trouble. So far, I installed and updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers (331.20). Initially X would not start (after installation) so I replaced my xorg.conf with xorg.conf.failsafe. This fixed that problem, but then I tried to enable the other 2 monitors (other video card) and xorg fails to start once again (after I login there is no desktop).   I am having a strange issue that I can't seem to resolve. Here is what happend: I had some log files in a github repository that I didn't want there. Everything seems to have pushed fine though, because the files seem to be gone from the GitHub repository, if I try and push again I get the same thing: error: Unable to append to .git/logs/refs/remotes/origin/master: Permission denied error: Cannot update the ref 'refs/remotes/origin/master'.   I hope someone can assist me. I have RubyMine 2.0.2 installed on Windows 7 32 bit computer. Since a week ago (I presume it must have been after I have update some gems) I cant seem to debug form the IDE. I am trying to debug a rake task which I could before. Running the rake task normally works perfect, just debug doesnt. Its not just limited to the rake, I cant debug any ruby files. I've tried installing older versions of debug-ide and debug-base but to no success. I've tried it with ruby 1.8.7 and 1.8.6 on different computers but nothing. • Simple jquery ajax call leaks memory in ie.

  I created a web page that makes an ajax call every second. In Internet Explorer 7, it leaks memory badly (20MB in about 15 minutes). The program is very simple. It just runs a javascript function that makes an ajax call. The server returns an empty string, and the javascript does nothing with it. I use setTimout to run the function every second, and I'm using Drip to watch the thing. Does jquery ajax inherently create some sort of circular reference, and if so, how can I free it? By the way, it doesn't leak in Firefox. Someone suggested running the test in another VM and see if the results are the same. Rather than setting up another VM, I found a laptop that was running XP Home with IE8. It exhibits the same problem. I tried some older versions of jquery and got better results, but the problem didn't go away entirely until I abandoned ajax in jquery and went with more traditional (and ugly) ajax.

• "Content is not allowed in prolog" when parsing perfectly valid XML on GAE

  Hey guys, I've been beating my head against this absolutely infuriating bug for the last 48 hours, so I thought I'd finally throw in the towel and try asking here before I throw my laptop out the window. I'm trying to parse the response XML from a call I made to AWS SimpleDB. The response is coming back on the wire just fine; for example, it may look like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ListDomainsResponse xmlns="http://sdb.amazonaws.com/doc/2009-04-15/"> <ListDomainsResult> <DomainName>Audio</DomainName> <DomainName>Course</DomainName> <DomainName>DocumentContents</DomainName> <DomainName>LectureSet</DomainName> <DomainName>MetaData</DomainName> <DomainName>Professors</DomainName> <DomainName>Tag</DomainName> </ListDomainsResult> <ResponseMetadata> <RequestId>42330b4a-e134-6aec-e62a-5869ac2b4575</RequestId> <BoxUsage>0.0000071759</BoxUsage> </ResponseMetadata> </ListDomainsResponse> I pass in this XML to a parser with XMLEventReader eventReader = xmlInputFactory.createXMLEventReader(response.getContent()); and call eventReader.nextEvent(); a bunch of times to get the data I want. Here's the bizarre part -- it works great inside the local server. The response comes in, I parse it, everyone's happy. (rest of lines omitted) I have double, triple, quadruple checked this XML for 'invisible characters' or non-UTF8 encoded characters, etc. I looked at it byte-by-byte in an array for byte-order-marks or something of that nature. Nothing; it passes every validation test I could throw at it. Even stranger, it happens if I use a Saxon-based parser as well -- but ONLY on GAE, it always works fine in my local environment. It makes it very hard to trace the code for problems when I can only run the debugger on an environment that works perfectly (I haven't found any good way to remotely debug on GAE). Nevertheless, using the primitive means I have, I've tried a million approaches including: XML with and without the prolog With and without newlines With and without the "encoding=" attribute in the prolog Both newline styles With and without the chunking information present in the HTTP stream And I've tried most of these in multiple combinations where it made sense they would interact -- nothing! I'm at my wit's end. Has anyone seen an issue like this before that can hopefully shed some light on it? Thanks!
