On Linux it has problems that with certain window managers (gnome-wm/metacity), the main window (based on QDialog) is created in the background (it's not raised). This seems wrong, since documentation for activateWindow does not specify any conditions under which something like this could happen. My question is: Is there any reason to have activateWindow in showEvent in the first place? If there is some reason, what would be good workaround for focusing issues?

  • Should windows services be created with custom users, or should I use one of LocalSystem/LocalServic

    I'm asking the question in general for the average custom developed NT service or unix OSS daemon ported to windows with SCM support. However, at the moment my immediate concern is for mongodb. From my experience with UNIX I like all my services to run as different unprivileged users. The way this has translated to windows is as follows: Create a local (or domain if it has to talk to SQL server) windows user with a long random password (lately an ASCII85 encoded guid generated from a different machine). Set it to next expire and forbid it from changing its password. Remove that user from the "Users Group". Grant that user "Login as a Service" permission. Give it read permission to the folder where the app resides, and write permission to the logs and data files the applications use. Assign the user to the service. Troubleshoot until the service starts. My feeling is that the unprivileged users are less powerful than the 3 special service users. I also feel that by isolating which users run which services, I would limit collateral damage if a way to compromise one service was found.

  • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

    I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. What I have tried so far (which couldn't find the rootkit): TrendMicro OfficeScan Antivirus AVAST Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Ad-Aware Vipre Antivirus GMER TDSSKiller (Kaspersky Labs) HiJackThis RegRuns UnHackMe SuperAntiSpyware Portable Tizer Rootkit Razor (*) Sophos Anti-Rootkit SpyHunter 4 There are no other strange activities on the machine. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   • When pointing to new DNS servers is there any chance of E-mails being lost if the old E-mail hosting service is still up?

    I am changing webhosts and will be using the new hosts mail servers instead of the old ones. I have created all the correctly named mailboxes on the new service but have also not yet cut ties with the old webhost. I am expecting that even if the new DNS values which point to the new hosts DNS servers and respective SOA\zone file with the new MX values have not yet propagated and an E-mail is directed at the old hosts mail servers as per the mx records in the SOA\zone records which the old hosting provider holds, the E-mail would still come through to the mailbox that's on the old host providers mail servers. So I am just trying to reaffirm if I got this right and it's essentially impossible for me to loose an E-mail since it will hit either the old hosts mail servers or the new ones ? Also is it possible to configure the same E-mail account to check and collect mail from different mail servers by entering multiple pop3 addresses ? And if I choose to keep the old web hosts mail hosting services as a backup by specifying the mx records for it with a lower priority in the SOA records hosted by the new webhost, is it possible to have any incoming E-mails sent to both servers by the mail daemon so I have two copies? Or is my only option having the primary mail server forward the E-mail somehow to the old mailserver ?

  • Reading and writing to app.config file in C#

In the form user can change the settings values, after making changes the user can press the Save button and on this I want to save all the values back to the app.config file. Is there any way to do that in C#?

  • Oversized Qt Fonts on OSX

    Why does Qt on OSX appear to default to overly large fonts? Even when you select the same font size manually the fonts appear slightly bigger. Does Qt on OSX use a different font rendering to OSX? Does this improve if you use Qt for Cocoa? In addition, is there a qtconfig tool or equivalent to globally set the font settings for all Qt applications? Thanks!
