  • JVM throws OutOfMemory during gc though there are plenty memory left...

    I have my java application configured to use 5G memory. I got an OutOfMemory out of blue. I inspected the gc log and found plenty of memory left: young generation occupies 4% allocated space, tenure generation occupancy is 5% and perm generation is 43%. I am puzzled why JVM throws an OutOfMemory at the gc time. Does anyone know why this is happening? Your help is greatly appreciated.   • linux new/delete, malloc/free large memory blocks

    Hi folks, We have a linux system (kubuntu 7.10) that runs a number of CORBA Server processes. The server software uses glibc libraries for memory allocation. The linux PC has 4G physical memory. Swap is disabled for speed reasons. Upon receiving a request to process data, one of the server processes allocates a large data buffer (using the standard C++ operator 'new'). The buffer size varies depening upon a number of parameters but is typically around 1.2G Bytes. It can be up to about 1.9G Bytes. When the request has completed, the buffer is released using 'delete'. This works fine for several consecutive requests that allocate buffers of the same size or if the request allocates a smaller size than the previous. The memory appears to be free'd ok - otherwise buffer allocation attempts would eventually fail after just a couple of requests. In any case, we can see the buffer memory being allocated and freed for each request using tools such as KSysGuard etc. The problem arises when a request requires a buffer larger than the previous. In this case, operator 'new' throws an exception. It's as if the memory that has been free'd from the first allocation cannot be re-allocated even though there is sufficient free physical memory available. If I kill and restart the server process after the first operation, then the second request for a larger buffer size succeeds. i.e. killing the process appears to fully release the freed memory back to the system. Can anyone offer an explanation as to what might be going on here? Could it be some kind of fragmentation or mapping table size issue? I am thinking of replacing new/delete with malloc/free and use mallopt to tune the way the memory is being released to the system. BTW - I'm not sure if it's relevant to our problem, but the server uses Pthreads that get created and destroyed on each processing request. Cheers, Brian.

  • How can I share an entity framework model across website users

    Hello, Currently my website is based around MVC and the Entity Framework running against a SQL Server 2005 database. So far, it has all been running very smoothly, and I really enjoy MVC and its slimmer more concise code (and no huge viewstates or soul destroying postbacks ;)) Recently I was working on upgrading the site to use a simple forum system, and this is where I started running into problems. When I was testing the site using two different browsers, if I created or replied to a post in one browser, the other browser couldn't see the post. At the moment, each visitor to the site gets their own copy of the entity model, which I store in their session data. Obviously this is the problem as updates to one model aren't getting carried to the other. As a test, I tried storing a single copy of the model which all visitors would access by assigning the model to a static variable. This worked, and both browsers could see each others modifications. However, it had its side effects. For example, if I fired up both browsers at the same time and the model was initialized, one browser would crash, and the other would work fine, despite me using a locking object so in theory one of them should have been delayed until the model was ready (of course I could have implemented this wrong ;)). Also, originally this site did use one model for all visitors and when it was live, it frequently shut down - killing the IIS application pool while it did. Now I'm not sure if this was related, but I don't really want to reintroduce whatever bug I had that caused this shut down. So, my question is a simple one really - what is the best way of either using the same model for all website users so they all see updates, or if they do have separate copies (which I imagine will have a performance impact in time) how can the models detect changes in the database and update themselves according.     Our application is memory intensive and deals with reading a large number of disk files. The total load can be more than 3 GB. There is a custom memory manager that uses memory mapped files to achieve reading of such a huge data. The files are mapped into the process memory space only when needed and with this the process memory is well under control. But what is observed is, with memory mapping, the system cache keeps on increasing until it occupies the available physical memory. This leads to the slowing down of the entire system. My question is how to prevent system cache from hogging the physical memory? I attempted to remove the file buffering (by using FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING ), but with this, the read operations take considerable amount of time and slows down the application performance. How to achieve the scalability without sacrificing much on performance. What are the common techniques used in such cases? I dont have a good understanding of the WinXP OS caching behavior. Any good links explaining the same would also be helpful.

    Ok this is my application : An Android app to allow me to submit CokeZone codes into CokeZone.co.uk from a mobile app instead of from the website. So I wrote this section of code to do the post logon command and then check to see if im logged in after. Problem is - the html I get from the homepage after I send the post command is the default - as if im not logged in - so something is going wrong. Can anyone please help! Its probably the URL im sending the POST to, or the params within the POST command - I havent done much of this stuff so its probably something obvious.     Hi, I'm requesting data from a server which returns data in the JSON format. Casting a HashMap into JSON when making the request wasn't hard at all but the other way seems to be a little tricky.     I assume the following objects should be used to read contents of DOCX file: XWPFDocument XWPFWordExtractor However, somewhere the compiler warns me from not including the correct libraries needed in classpath. I think I'm kinda lost for not knowing which jar file is the right one to include for this since there are so many jar files (POI libraries). My project so far involve in reading doc and docx files as part of the project. I've managed to read the contents of doc file. However, for docx file, I'm still having problem with that. Can anyone show the guidelines in terms of the codes and libraries needed (jar files) to read the content of docx file? I'm trying to limit the libraries need to be added on into project since I need to read doc and docx only.   • How to populate Java (web) application with initial data using Spring/JPA/Hibernate

    I want to setup my database with initial data programmatically. I want to populate my database for development runs, not for testing runs (it's easy). The product is built on top of Spring and JPA/Hibernate. Developer checks out the project Developer runs command/script to setup database with initial data Developer starts application (server) and begins developing/testing then: Developer runs command/script to flush the database and set it up with new initial data because database structures or the initial data bundle were changed What I want is to setup my environment by required parts in order to call my DAOs and insert new objects into database. I do not want to create initial data sets in raw SQL, XML, take dumps of database or whatever. I want to programmatically create objects and persist them in database as I would in normal application logic. One way to accomplish this would be to start up my application normally and run a special servlet that does the initialization. But is that really the way to go? I would love to execute the initial data setup as Maven task and I don't know how to do that if I take the servlet approach. There is somewhat similar question. I took a quick glance at the suggested DBUnit and Unitils. But they seem to be heavily focused in setting up testing environments, which is not what I want here. DBUnit does initial data population, but only using xml/csv fixtures, which is not what I'm after here. Then, Maven has SQL plugin, but I don't want to handle raw SQL. Maven also has Hibernate plugin, but it seems to help only in Hibernate configuration and table schema creation (not in populating db with data). How to do this?

    Hey, I would like to make an program that acts like a big filter for stocks. To do so, I need to have real-time (or delayed) quotes from the market. I started getting stock quotes by requesting pages from yahoo, accordingand parsing the html to the ticker, and parsing the html. I was wondering how to do this requesting and parsing html. Is there some way I can request only the stock quotes and its info? I know some applications do this, and I am very curious how they do it, because requesting web pages and parsing them is very time-consuming. Thanks, Dave
