• Passing values between Activities using MonoDroid

  Been doing some work in MonoDroid and found that I needed to pass a user entered value from on Activity to another Activity in MonoDroid.  Here's how I did it. In my sending Activity, I need to take some user user entered data and send it to my second activity.  Here is the code:             string UserId = Convert.ToString(et.Text);            if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(UserId))            {                Intent i = new Intent();                i.SetClass(this, typeof(CustomList));                i.AddFlags(ActivityFlags.NewTask);                i.PutExtra("TwitterId", UserId);                StartActivity(i);            }  In this code, I have called .PutExtra and  passed it with a key.  In this case, I am passing a Twitter id.  In the code that is receiving the data, the code to retrieve the Twitter id is: string twitterId = Intent.GetStringExtra("TwitterId"); The call to GetStringExtra() returns the value passed on the key.

  It is widely know that data modifications on table variables do not support parallelism, Peter Larsson has a good example of that here .  Whilst tracking down a performance issue,  I saw that using the OUTPUT clause also causes parallelism to not be used. By way of example,  first lets create two tables with a simple parent and child (one to one) relationship, and then populate them with 100,000 rows. Drop table ParentDrop table Childgocreate table Parent(id integer identity Primary Key,data1 char(255))Create Table Child(id integer Primary Key)goinsert into Parent(data1)Select top 1000000 NULL from sys.columns a cross join sys.columns b insert into ChildSelect id from Parentgo If we then execute update Parent set data1 =''from Parentjoin Child on Parent.Id = Child.Id where Parent.Id %100 =1 and Child.id %100 =1 We should see an execution plan using parallelism such as   However,  if the OUTPUT clause is now used update Parent set data1 =''output inserted.idfrom Parentjoin Child on Parent.Id = Child.Id where Parent.Id %100 =1 and Child.id %100 =1   The execution plan shows that Parallelism was not used Make of that what you will, but i thought that this was a pretty unexpected outcome. Update : Laurence Hoff has mailed me to note that when the OUTPUT results are captured to a temporary table using the INTO clause,  then parallelism is used.  Naturally if you use a table variable then there is still no parallelism

• Cannot activate windows 7

  I can't activate Windows 7, I get an error saying DNS name does not exist. Is something configured incorrectly somewhere? PS: I need the answer within 13 days ;) UPDATE: I had upgraded from my company's Windows Vista build, and when I connect to the company VPN and activate I get a different error: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the Application Event Log for additional information. The Application Event Log contains this (I took out the server name, it's one of the company servers): The client has sent an activation request to the key management service machine. • Where to Perform Authentication in REST API Server?

  I am working on a set of REST APIs that needs to be secured so that only authenticated calls will be performed. There will be multiple web apps to service these APIs. Is there a best-practice approach as to where the authentication should occur? I have thought of two possible places. Have each web app perform the authentication by using a shared authentication service. This seems to be in line with tools like Spring Security, which is configured at the web app level. Protect each web app with a "gateway" for security. In this approach, the web app never receives unauthenticated calls. This seems to be the approach of Apache HTTP Server Authentication. With this approach, would you use Apache or nginx to protect it, or something else in between Apache/nginx and your web app? For additional reference, the authentication is similar to services like AWS that have a non-secret identifier combined with a shared secret key. I am also considering using HMAC. Also, we are writing the web services in Java using Spring. Update: To clarify, each request needs to be authenticated with the identifier and secret key. This is similar to how AWS REST requests work.

• How to remap CAPSLOCK to ESC in Linux Mint 12

  I would like to remap the CAPSLOCK key to ESC as this is easier to use in Vim. I can make it in Ubuntu 11.04 as there's an option for this in Keyborad configuration. But recently I switched to use Linux Mint and found that there's no such option. I don't know whether it is the gnome3 that makes this happen, as there are only some basic features to customize. Hoping someone can help me remap the key, thanks in advance. found this article, but the options are not found in Mint 12

• 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

  One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1.   Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources>  <Style TargetType="Button"         x:Key="NormalButton">    <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"            Value="Left" />    <Setter Property="MinWidth"            Value="50" />    <Setter Property="Margin"            Value="10" />  </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Then you can have an image and text within the button. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Home"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Home.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Home"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button>  <Button Name="btnLog"          ToolTipService.ToolTip="Logs"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}">    <StackPanel>      <Image Style="{StaticResource NormalImage}"              Source="Images/Log.jpg" />      <TextBlock Text="Logs"                  Style="{StaticResource NormalTextBlock}" />    </StackPanel>  </Button></StackPanel> You will need to add one more resource for the TextBlock control too. <Style TargetType="TextBlock"        x:Key="NormalTextBlock">  <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"          Value="Center" /></Style> All of the above will now produce the following:   Figure 4: Add multiple controls to the content to make your buttons even more interesting. Summary While this is a simple example, you can see how XAML Content has great flexibility. You could add a MediaElement control as the content of a Button and play a video within the Button. Not that you would necessarily do this, but it does work. What is nice about adding different content within the Button control is you still get the Click event and other attributes of a button, but it does necessarily look like a normal button. • powertop keeps telling me to turn off the same thing, over and over

  I am running an ubuntu lucid laptop on battery. I want to make my power last as long as possible. Aswell as the normal things like turn down screen brightness, and turn off wifi, I'm using powertop. It will sometimes tell me things, e.g.: Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key OK, I press the U key to do that. However a few minutes later it will give me the same suggestion, it's as if it never enabled USB autosuspend the first time. It does this for other things aswell, not just USB autosuspend. e.g. it'll give me this message frequently: An audio device is active 100.0% of the time: hwC0D1 LSI ID 1040 Q - Quit R - Refresh A - Turn HD audio powersave on Is there anything I can do to make these choices 'stick'? Or do I have some unfortunatle hardware that won't obey linux? (If so, is there any way to confirm this?)

• Keyboard / keymap problems with Xubuntu 12.04 + NX nomachine

  I'm running NX client on my Macbook Pro to connect to a Xubuntu 12.04 desktop at work. I have configured NX client to start up a console upon connection. I am able to connect to my remote linux machine and I get a simple xterm console. However, when I run xfce4-session, half my keys no longer work. For example, when I launch a terminal, I typing a, s, or d works, but if type w, e, r, or t, the cursor just blinks. If I ctrl-C out of xfce4-session, all the keys work fine in my xterm console. If I run xev, this is the output for when I hit a key that works: KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, root 0x373, subw 0x0, time 170160781, (-45,-21), root:(824,429), state 0x4, keycode 16 (keysym 0x63, c), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (03) "" XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, root 0x373, subw 0x0, time 170160781, (-45,-21), root:(824,429), state 0x4, keycode 67 (keysym 0xffe3, Control_L), same_screen YES, XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 63 XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False but when I hit a key that doesn't work: FocusOut event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, mode NotifyGrab, detail NotifyAncestor FocusIn event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x2e00001, mode NotifyUngrab, detail NotifyAncestor KeymapNotify event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x0, keys: 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Any ideas on what I can do to troubleshoot this issue? Googling around offered a few suggestions (like playing with xmodmap) but nothing seemed to work. Also, one thing worth mentioning is that I do not have any keyboard issues when remoting into a different Ubuntu 10 box via NX.

• MySQL replication/connection failing over SSL

  I set up two MySQL servers where one is replicating from the other. They both work perfectly, but once I turn on SSL I get the following error: ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error I get the same error running from command line like so: mysql --ssl=1 --ssl-ca=/etc/mysql/certificates/ca-cert.pem --ssl-cert=/etc/mysql/certificates/client-cert.pem --ssl-key=/etc/mysql/certificates/client-key.pem --user=slave --password=slavepassword --host=master.url.com Both MySQL servers are running on version 5.0.77. There is a difference that MySQL in the master server was compiled under x86_64 while in the slave server under i686. Also both machines are running CentOS 5. Plus I generated certificates as per this page. Any idea for finding a solution?

• Shibboleth: found encrypted assertions, but no CredentialResolver was available

  I've gotten a Shibboleth Server Provider (SP) up and running, and I'm using the TestShib Identity Provider (IdP) for testing. The configuration appears to be all correct, and when I requested my secured directory I was sent to the IdP where I logged in and then was sent back to https://example.org/Shibboleth.sso/SAML2/POST where I am getting a generic error message. Checking the logs, I am told: found encrypted assertions, but no CredentialResolver was available I have rechecked the configuration, and there I have: <CredentialResolver type="File" key="/etc/shibboleth/sp-key.pem" certificate="/etc/shibboleth/sp-cert.pem"/> Both of these files are present at those locations. I've restarted apache and retried, but still get the same error. I don't know if it makes a difference - but only a subdirectory of the site has been secured - the documentroot is publicly available.

• Securing Back End API for Mobile Applications

  I have an application that I am writing for both iOS and Android; this application will be served by a ReSTFUL API running on a cluster of servers on "the internets". I am curious how the rest of the world is going about securing their APIs so only specific applications running on iOS or Android can use these APIs. I could go the same route as other OAuth providers by providing a key/secret combination (2-legged OAuth), however, what do I do if I ever have to change these keys??? Do I create a new key/secret for every person that downloads the app??? The application is a social-based game that will allow the user to interact with other "participants" in the game based on location, achievements, etc. The API will provide the following functions: -Questions, Quests, etc -Profile Management -User Interaction -Possible Social Interaction Once the app gains traction I plan on opening up the API ala Facebook, Twitter, etc. Which is easy enough, I plan on implementing an OAuth Server and whatnot. However, I want to make sure, during this phase, that only people who are using the application can access and use the API.

• Enabled storing Bitlocker keys in Active Directory, is there a way to upload keys of drives encrypted before this?

  We have enabled storing of Bitlocker keys within the device object on Active Directory, however before this was implemented, we had encrypted 100+ devices using bitlocker and we've only found ways to upload the key to AD when enabling bitlocker for the first time on an install. Does anybody know of a way where we can upload all the keys for all the devices which already had their drives encrypted with Bitlocker into their respective device objects in AD? Or are we going to have to decrypt and re-encrypt all the devices on the floor? (Google seems to say this is what we're going to have to do, however we're no experts in Bitlocker, so may have missed something) When we go into Manage Bitlocker of an already encrypted device, we only get the same options of saving the key to a file, a memory stick or printing it out, no option is available to save to AD etc. Any help would be appreciated.

• Stuck with Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 errors

  A ways back I installed Microsoft Visual Studio beta 2. Today I installed Visual Studio 2010 from Dreamspark (the one with the activation key baked in). This resulted in an install with no place to put an activation key (I don't have one anyways), but I still get the following error when I try to start it: Your Microsoft Visual Studio evaluation period has expired. You will need to upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio to the latest release. This didn't go away with a complete uninstall and reinstall, and I have no idea how to fix it. A quick internet search reveals that this is the error message from Beta 2 after the date at which the RTM version went live. I have a feeling that the message is due to some hanging registry entries (I went through the manual uninstall instructions here). Does anyone know how to find and eliminate all vestiges of Beta 2 or something?

• Update mysql database with arpwatch textfile database

  I'm looking to keep arpwatch entries in a mysql database to crossreference with other information I'm storing based on mac addresses. I've manually imported the arpwatch database into my mysql database, but being a novice with databases I'm not sure what the best way to continually update the database with new entries without creating duplicates would be. None of the fields can be unique, as even the time is duplicated frequently. I'm not interested in the actual arpwatch events like flip flop or new station, just the mac/ip/time pairings. Would a simple bash (or sql) shell script do the trick? Would it be possible to make the mac address plus the time be a composite key of some sort? the database is called utility, table is arpwatch, columns are mac, ip, time a seperate table named 'hosts' with columns mac, ip, type, hostname, location, notes has mac as the primary key. This table will correlate different ip addresses that a mac had over time using the arpwatch column initial import was done with MySQL Workbench using INSERT INTO commands with creative search and replace on the text file

• Inverted question mark only on Microsoft Office applications

  My dad has a notebook and the key which has the "/?°" symbols acts like ctrl. Known factory problem. Anyway, his keyboard also has a "?" marked under the "w" key. Pressing "ctrl + alt + w" will display the "?" character (question, interrogation mark). Except on Office applications, like Word and Outlook, which will output "¿". I've searched Word and Outlook menus looking for a parameter that could be, somehow, remapping the notebooks keyboards, applying different regional configurations, language, or encodings. Since it only happens on Office apps, I believe the solution is within its options, but I was unable to find it where. Pressing "ctrl + alt gr + w" will display ? correctly, but I am stumped by this problem. I could remap the keys and make "/?° behave correctly, but my curiosity now is eating me alive. Why only on Office! Thanks,

• scheduled chkdsk on Windows 7 blinking the hard disk light every 5 seconds, what can I do?

  PG&E (the local electricity company) came and took out the old power meters and put in a new ones by brute force and with no advance notice in our neighborhood, so my computer went down in power. So I went to Windows 7's drive C and schedule a Disk Cleanup (chkdsk) on the next boot up. When it boots up, it says A disk check has been scheduled To skip disk checking, press any key within __ second(s). and then after it shows To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s). it just sits there, with no further message. the hard disc light blinks every 5 seconds. So what is to be done now? I certainly don't want to brute force power off again.

• Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?

  I'm looking for a data store that is very memory efficient while still allowing many object changes per second and disregarding ACID compliance for the last X records. I need this database for a server with not much memory and I can make a key-value store, document, or SQL database work. The idea is that indexes/keys are the only thing I need in memory and all the actual values/objects/rows can be saved on disk do to the low read rate (I just want index/key lookup to be fast). I also don't want records constantly being flushed to disk, so I would like the last X number of records to be held in memory so that 100 or so of them can all be written at once. I don't care if I lose the last 10 seconds worth of objects/values. I do care if the database as a whole is in danger of becoming corrupt. Is there a data-store like this?

• #mvvmlight V4 update for Win8 RTM

  With Windows 8 RTM out of the doors (at least for some of us), it was also time to create an update to MVVM Light. I selected the V4 RTM to do this (V4.0.23).This RTM version was released a few weeks ago with no much bells and whistles because I was just too busy to write much about it. Now after some vacation, I will resume blogging on all my favorite topics including of course MVVM Light. Upgrade Upgrading the installations should not require an ununistall, so try to simply run the MSI downloaded from the Download section at http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/. Should you encounter any issue, try to uninstall the old version first following the steps at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/cleaning/. Upgrading current apps from Win8 RP to Win8 RTM I didn’t recompile the assemblies of MVVM Light, so if you had a version running with V4.0.23 on Windows 8 RP, you should be able to use the same DLLs on Windows 8 RTM. If you were using earlier versions however, I would recommend doing an upgrade. I noticed a warning regarding the signing certificate. It is due to the PFX key which appears to be outdated after the upgrade to Windows 8 RTM. I solved this warning by replacing the old PFX key with a new one I copied from a new project. The warning did not cause the build to fail though. About MVVM Light V4 RTM The RTM is finalizing quite a lot of issues. The change log is available at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/installing/changes/. There are some issues that are either still open or that popped up since then, and I am working on V4.1 to be released in the next few weeks. In addition to that, I have plans to support Windows Phone 8 (when it comes) and have a nice list of ideas for V5 with a few new components. Thanks again for your continuous support of MVVM Light! • How to Acitvate Window 7 on second computer

  I bought Windows 7 Professional which I installed it on my laptop. Now i decide to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstall the windows from my laptop which I returned to the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business) and insall windows 7 on my desktop PC. The problem is I cannot activate my copy of windows 7 on the desktop PC. and every time I try to activate it I get the error message " The product key you typed cannot be used to activate windows on this computer" and the code of the error is: Code: 0xc004c008 Description: The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used. Hoe can I solve this problem.
