Wrong perspective is showing in Eclipse plugin project [closed]

I am working in Eclipse Modeling Framework (Eclipse plugin development) in my project the tool(project i am working) provides three perspectives. 1.Accelerator Analyst perspective 2.Contract Validation and 3.Underwriter rules Editor... By default it starts with Contract validation perspective (As we define it within the plugin_customization.ini). However after switching to other perspective does not change the perspective shown... As all perspective (Class, Id and Name) is define only inside Plugin.XML as it is the task of org.eclipse.ui.perspective that that perspective name should be come forefront. Out of 10 7 times it is working fine but I am not getting why this is not working in that 3 cases. What is a widely accepted term for a string variable that would probably contain a file path and file name?

For functions that need to index files in a directory and rename them FileName0001, FileName0002, etc... I often need to write a function that splits the file name from the file path and rename the file. When I put the file name and file path back together, I don't have a very good name for the variable that contains both of them and I usually just wind up concatenating them every time I want to use them (usually using them as parameters for functions labeled either filename or filepath) so I never really know what I'm doing until I notice a lot of files being written in the same directory as my binaries. Anyway, what do I call a file name and a file path? I don't want to call it File, because that usually means the binary information behind the file. I don't want to call it URI because that usually means I've got some sort of protocol, which I don't. I just want a good way to denote "c:\somedir\somedir\somedir\somefile.txt" so as to deconfuse this mess I've just realized I'm in. Please don't just list your personal preference. I think an excellent answer should "'site its sources". (as in, provide a link to a repository with a good example of the code being used as I described)

Banshee crashes consistently - is there a fix?

How much information can you mine out of a name?

While not directly related to programming, I figured that the programmers on here would be just as curious as I was about this question. Feel free to close the question if it does not meet with the guidelines. A name: first, possibly a middle, and surname. I'm curious about how much information you can mine out of a name, using publicly available datasets. I know that you can get the following with anywhere between a low-high probability (depending on the input) using US census data: 1) Gender. 2) Race. Facebook for instance, used exactly that to find out, with a decent level of accuracy, the racial distribution of users of their site (https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=205925658858). What else can be mined? I'm not looking for anything specific, this is a very open-ended question to assuage my curiousity. My examples are US specific, so we'll assume that the name is the name of someone located in the US; but, if someone knows of publicly available datasets for other countries, I'm more than open to them too. I hope this is an interesting question!

Passing integer lists in a sql query, best practices

I'm currently looking at ways to pass lists of integers in a SQL query, and try to decide which of them is best in which situation, what are the benefots of each, and what are the pitfalls, what should be avoided :) Right now I know of 3 ways that we currently use in our application. 1) Table valued parameter: Create a new Table Valued Parameter in sql server: CREATE TYPE [dbo].[TVP_INT] AS TABLE( [ID] [int] NOT NULL ) Then run the query against it: using (var conn = new SqlConnection(DataContext.GetDefaultConnectionString)) { var comm = conn.CreateCommand(); comm.CommandType = CommandType.Text; comm.CommandText = @" UPDATE DA SET [tsLastImportAttempt] = CURRENT_TIMESTAMP FROM [Account] DA JOIN @values IDs ON DA.ID = IDs.ID"; comm.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("values", downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).ToDataTable()) { TypeName = "TVP_INT" }); conn.Open(); comm.ExecuteScalar(); } The major disadvantages of this method is the fact that Linq doesn't support table valued params (if you create an SP with a TVP param, linq won't be able to run it) :( 2) Convert the list to Binary and use it in Linq! This is a bit better.. Create an SP, and you can run it within linq :) To do this, the SP will have an IMAGE parameter, and we'll be using a user defined function (udf) to convert this to a table.. We currently have implementations of this function written in C++ and in assembly, both have pretty much the same performance :) Basically, each integer is represented by 4 bytes, and passed to the SP. In .NET we have an extension method that convers an IEnumerable to a byte array The extension method: public static Byte[] ToBinary(this IEnumerable intList) { return ToBinaryEnum(intList).ToArray(); } private static IEnumerable<Byte> ToBinaryEnum(IEnumerable<Int32> intList) { IEnumerator<Int32> marker = intList.GetEnumerator(); while (marker.MoveNext()) { Byte[] result = BitConverter.GetBytes(marker.Current); Array.Reverse(result); foreach (byte b in result) yield return b; } } The SP: CREATE PROCEDURE [Accounts-UpdateImportAttempts] @values IMAGE AS BEGIN UPDATE DA SET [tsLastImportAttempt] = CURRENT_TIMESTAMP FROM [Account] DA JOIN dbo.udfIntegerArray(@values, 4) IDs ON DA.ID = IDs.Value4 END And we can use it by running the SP directly, or in any linq query we need using (var db = new DataContext()) { db.Accounts_UpdateImportAttempts(downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).ToBinary()); // or var accounts = db.Accounts .Where(a => db.udfIntegerArray(downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).ToBinary(), 4) .Select(i => i.Value4) .Contains(a.ID)); } This method has the benefit of using compiled queries in linq (which will have the same sql definition, and query plan, so will also be cached), and can be used in SPs as well. Both these methods are theoretically unlimited, so you can pass millions of ints at a time :) 3) The simple linq .Contains() It's a more simple approach, and is perfect in simple scenarios. But is of course limited by this. using (var db = new DataContext()) { var accounts = db.Accounts .Where(a => downloadResults.Select(d => d.ID).Contains(a.ID)); } The biggest drawback of this method is that each integer in the downloadResults variable will be passed as a separate int.. In this case, the query is limited by sql (max allowed parameters in a sql query, which is a couple of thousand, if I remember right). So I'd like to ask.. What do you think is the best of these, and what other methods and approaches have I missed?

PHP script keeps doing mmap/munmap

Hello, My PHP script contains a loop, which does nothing much more than echoing and dereferencing pointers (like in $tab[$othertab[$i]]- stuff). It was working great until yesterday, when this script starting being VERY slow (like 50 times slower than before). After using strace, i figured out that 90% of the time, the script does mmap/munmap. Is C# slower than VB.NET?

Believe it or not, despite the title, this is not a troll. Running some benchmarks this morning, my colleagues and I have discovered some strange things concerning performance, and I am wondering if we're doing something horribly wrong. We started out comparing C# vs. Delphi Prism calculating prime numbers, and found that Prism was about 30% faster. I figured maybe CodeGear did more optimization when generating IL (the exe was about twice as big as C#'s and had all sorts of different IL in it.) So I decided to write a test in VB.NET as well, assuming that Microsoft's compilers would end up writing essentially the same IL for each language. However, the result there was more shocking: C# was more than three times slower than VB running the same operations. The generated IL was different, but not extremely so, and I'm not good enough at reading it to understand the differences. As a fan of C#, this apparent slowness wounds me horribly, and I am left wondering: what in the world is going on here? Is it time to pack it all in and go write web apps in Ruby? ;-) I've included the code for each below--just copy it into a new VB or C# console app, and run. On my machine, VB finds 348513 primes in about 6.36 seconds. C# finds the same number of primes in 21.76 seconds. (I've got an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @2.4Ghz; on another Intel machine in the office the code for both runs much faster but the ratio is about the same; on an AMD machine here the timing is ~10 seconds for VB and ~13 for C#--much less difference, but C# is still always slower.) Both of the console applications were compiled in Release mode, but otherwise no project settings were changed from the defaults generated by Visual Studio 2008. Is it a generally-known fact that C#'s generated IL is worse than VB's? Or is this a strange edge case? Or is my code flawed somehow (most likely)? Any insights are appreciated. Why is processing a sorted array faster than an unsorted array?

Here is a piece of code that shows some very peculiar performance. The dynamic Type in C# Simplifies COM Member Access from Visual FoxPro

I’ve written quite a bit about Visual FoxPro interoperating with .NET in the past both for ASP.NET interacting with Visual FoxPro COM objects as well as Visual FoxPro calling into .NET code via COM Interop. COM Interop with Visual FoxPro has a number of problems but one of them at least got a lot easier with the introduction of dynamic type support in .NET. One of the biggest problems with COM interop has been that it’s been really difficult to pass dynamic objects from FoxPro to .NET and get them properly typed. The only way that any strong typing can occur in .NET for FoxPro components is via COM type library exports of Visual FoxPro components. Due to limitations in Visual FoxPro’s type library support as well as the dynamic nature of the Visual FoxPro language where few things are or can be described in the form of a COM type library, a lot of useful interaction between FoxPro and .NET required the use of messy Reflection code in .NET. Reflection is .NET’s base interface to runtime type discovery and dynamic execution of code without requiring strong typing. In FoxPro terms it’s similar to EVALUATE() functionality albeit with a much more complex API and corresponiding syntax. The Reflection APIs are fairly powerful, but they are rather awkward to use and require a lot of code. Even with the creation of wrapper utility classes for common EVAL() style Reflection functionality dynamically access COM objects passed to .NET often is pretty tedious and ugly. Let’s look at a simple example. In the following code I use some FoxPro code to dynamically create an object in code and then pass this object to .NET. An alternative to this might also be to create a new object on the fly by using SCATTER NAME on a database record. How the object is created is inconsequential, other than the fact that it’s not defined as a COM object – it’s a pure FoxPro object that is passed to .NET. Since the object doesn’t exist in .NET as a type signature the object is passed without any specific type information as plain non-descript object. To retrieve a property the Reflection APIs like Type.InvokeMember or Type.GetProperty().GetValue() etc. need to be used. I made this code a little simpler by using the Reflection Wrappers I mentioned earlier but even with those ComUtils calls the code is pretty ugly requiring passing the objects for each call and casting each element. Using .NET 4.0 Dynamic Typing makes this Code a lot cleaner Enter .NET 4.0 and the dynamic type. The code can use regular object ‘.’ syntax to reference each of the members of the object. You can access properties and call methods this way using natural object language. Also note that all the type casts that were required in the Reflection code go away – dynamic types like var can infer the type to cast to based on the target assignment. As long as the type can be inferred by the compiler at compile time (ie. the left side of the expression is strongly typed) no explicit casts are required. Note that although you get to use plain object syntax in the code above you don’t get Intellisense in Visual Studio because the type is dynamic and thus has no hard type definition in .NET . The above example calls a .NET Component from VFP, but it also works the other way around. Another frequent scenario is an .NET code calling into a FoxPro COM object that returns a dynamic result. Compared to the Reflection code that previously was necessary to run similar code this is much easier to write, understand and maintain. For COM interop and Visual FoxPro operation dynamic type support in .NET 4.0 is a huge improvement and certainly makes it much easier to deal with FoxPro code that calls into .NET. Regardless of whether you’re using COM for calling Visual FoxPro objects from .NET (ASP.NET calling a COM component and getting a dynamic result returned) or whether FoxPro code is calling into a .NET COM component from a FoxPro desktop application. At one point or another FoxPro likely ends up passing complex dynamic data to .NET and for this the dynamic typing makes coding much cleaner and more readable without having to create custom Reflection wrappers. Annotation Processor for Superclass Sensitive Actions

Someone creating superclass sensitive actions should need to specify only the following things: The condition under which the popup menu item should be available, i.e., the condition under which the action is relevant. And, for superclass sensitive actions, the condition is the name of a superclass. I.e., if I'm creating an action that should only be invokable if the class implements "org.openide.windows.TopComponent", then that fully qualified name is the condition. The position in the list of Java class popup menus where the new menu item should be found, relative to the existing menu items. The display name. The path to the action folder where the new action is registered in the Central Registry. The code that should be executed when the action is invoked. In other words, the code for the enablement (which, in this case, means the visibility of the popup menu item when you right-click on the Java class) should be handled generically, under the hood, and not every time all over again in each action that needs this special kind of enablement. C# Design How to Elegantly wrap a DAL class

I have an application which uses MyGeneration's dOODads ORM to generate it's Data Access Layer. dOODad works by generating a persistance class for each table in the database. Fluent interface design and code smell

The thing I do not like is that the StepClause has knowledge of its derived class NamedStepClause. I tried a couple of things to make this sit better with me. I tried to move things out to interfaces but then the problem just moved from the concrete to the interfaces - INamedStepClause still need to derive from IStepClause and IStepClause needs to return INamedStepClause to be able to call Step(). I could also make Step() part of a completely separate type. Then we do not have this problem and we'd have: var workflow = new Workflow().Configure() .Step().Action1() .Step("abc").Action2() .Step().Action2() .Step("def").Action1(); Which is ok but I'd like to make the step-naming optional if possible. I found this other post on SO here which looks interesting and promising. What are your opinions? I'd think the original solution is completely unacceptable or is it? By the way, those action methods will take predicates and functors and I don't think I want to take an additional parameter for naming the step there. The point of it all is, for me, is to only define these action methods in one place and one place only. So the solutions from the referenced link using generics and extension methods seem to be the best approaches so far.

C# Lack of Static Inheritance - What Should I Do?

Alright, so as you probably know, static inheritance is impossible in C#. I understand that, however I'm stuck with the development of my program. I will try to make it as simple as possible. Lets say our code needs to manage objects that are presenting aircrafts in some airport. The requirements are as follows: There are members and methods that are shared for all aircrafts There are many types of aircrafts, each type may have its own extra methods and members. There can be many instances for each aircraft type. Every aircraft type must have a friendly name for this type, and more details about this type. For example a class named F16 will have a static member FriendlyName with the value of "Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon". Other programmers should be able to add more aircrafts, although they must be enforced to create the same static details about the types of the aircrafts. In some GUI, there should be a way to let the user see the list of available types (with the details such as FriendlyName) and add or remove instances of the aircrafts, saved, lets say, to some XML file. So, basically, if I could enforce inherited classes to implement static members and methods, I would enforce the aircraft types to have static members such as FriendlyName. Sadly I cannot do that. AntFarm anti-pattern -- strategies to avoid, antidotes to help heal from

I'm working on a 10 page web site with a database back-end. There are 500+ objects in use, trying to implement the MVP pattern in ASP.Net. I'm tracing the code-execution from a single-page, my finger has been on F-11 in Visual Studio for about 40 minutes, there seems to be no end, possibly 1000+ method calls for one web page! If it was just 50 objects that would be one thing, however, code execution snakes through all these objects just like millions of ants frantically woring in their giant dirt mound house, riddled with object tunnels. Hence, a new anti-pattern is born : AntFarm. AntFarm is also known as "OO-Madnes", "OO-Fever", OO-ADD, or simply design-pattern junkie. This is not the first time I've seen this, nor my associates at other companies. It seems that this style is being actively propogated, or in any case is a misunderstanding of the numerous OO/DP gospels going around... I'd like to introduce an anti-pattern to the anti-pattern: GST or "Get Stuff Done" AKA "Get Sh** done" AKA GRD (GetRDone). This pattern focused on just what it says, getting stuff done, in a simple way. I may try to outline it more in a later post, or please share your ideas on this antidote pattern. Anyway, I'm in the midst of a great example of AntFarm anti-pattern as I write (as a bonus, there is no documentation or comments). Please share you thoughts on how this anti-pattern has become so prevelant, how we can avoid it, and how can one undo or deal with this pattern in a live system one must work with!

relational data from xml

Our problem is this, we have a relational database to store objects in tables. As any relational database could, several of these tables have multiple foreign keys pointing to other tables (all pretty normal stuff) We've been trying to identify a solution to allow export of this relational data, ideally, only 1 of the objects in the model, to some sort of file (xml, text, ??). So it wouldn't be simple enough to just export 1 table as data stored in other tables would contribute to the complete model of the object. Something like the following picture: Toward this, i've written a routine to export the structure by following the foreign key paths which exports something similar to the following. <Tables> <TableA PK="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableC PK="1", FK_A="1", Val1, val2, val3> <TableC PK="2", FK_A="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableB PK="1", FK_A="1", FK_C="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableB PK="2", FK_A="1", FK_C="2", val1, val2, val3> <TableD PK="1", FK_B="1", FK_C="1", val1> <TableD PK="2", FK_B="2", FK_C="1", val1> </Tables> However, given this structure, it cannot be placed into a heirarchial format (ie D2 is a child of C1 and B2; and B2 is a child of C2) Which in turn, makes my life very difficult when trying to identify a methodology to reimport (and reKey) these objects. Has anybody done anything like this? how do you do it? are there tools or documentation on how this is best accomplished? Thanks for your help.

Classes, methods, and polymorphism in Python

I made a module prototype for building complex timer schedules in python. The classe prototypes permit to have Timer objects, each with their waiting times, Repeat objects that group Timer and other Repeat objects, and a Schedule class, just for holding a whole construction or Timers and Repeat instances. The construction can be as complex as needed and needs to be flexible. Each of these three classes has a .run() method, permitting to go through the whole schedule. Whatever the Class, the .run() method either runs a timer, a repeat group for a certain number of iterations, or a schedule. Is this polymorphism-oriented approach sound or silly? What are other appropriate approaches I should consider to build such a versatile utility that permits to put all building blocks together in as complex a way as desired with simplicity? Thanks! Call bindings for DependencyObject when DependencyProperites are changed

Is there a way to notify a DependencyObject's bindinigs when the inner DependencyProperties have changed? But I also have a binding for a BackgroundDef instance, which should create a Brush and draw the background of a button (either a single color, or two gradient colors). My problem is that the two-way bindings for the DependencyProperties update the properties, but the binding for the class instance is not called, as apparently the entire object does not change. Any idea how I could call the bindings for the DependencyObject when the DependencyProperties are changed?

Modeling a Generic Relationship in a Database

This is most likely one for all you sexy DBAs out there: How would I effieciently model a relational database whereby I have a field in an "Event" table which defines a "SportType". This "SportsType" field can hold a link to different sports tables E.g. "FootballEvent", "RubgyEvent", "CricketEvent" and "F1 Event". Each of these Sports tables have different fields specific to that sport. My goal is to be able to genericly add sports types in the future as required, yet hold sport specific event data (fields) as part of my Event Entity. Is it possible to use an ORM such as NHibernate / Entity framework which would reflect such a relationship? Easy way to observe user activity - how improve my database structure.

Welcome, I need some advise to improve perfomence my web application. In the begin I had this structure of database: USER -id (Primary Key) -name -password -email .... PROFILE -user Primary Key, Foreign Key (USER) -birthday -region -photoFile ... PAGES -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -page -date COMMENTS -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment -date FAVOURITES_PAGES -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -favourite_page Foreign Key(PAGE) -date but now one of the most important page of website is observatory, when everyone can observe activity others users. So I need select all pages, comments and favourites pages some users and display it in one list, sorted by date. For better perfomance (I think) I changed my structure to this: table USER and PROFILE without changes ACTIVITY (additional table- have common fields: user,date) -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -date -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment Foreign Key(COMMENTS) -favourite_page Foreign Key(FAVOURITES_PAGES) PAGES -id (Primary Key) -page COMMENTS -id (Primary Key) -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment FAVOURITES_PAGES -id (Primary Key) -favourite_page Foreign Key(PAGE) So now it is very easy get sorted records from all tables. But I have no only foreign key to PAGES, COMMENTS and FAVOURITES_PAGES in ACTIVITY table - there is about ten Foreign Key fields and in one record only one have value, others have None: ACTIVITY id user date page comment ... 1 2 2010-02-23 None 1 2 1 2010-02-21 1 None .... It is corect solution. When I display about 40 records in one page (pagination) I must wait about one secound, but database is almost emty (a few users and about 100 records in others tables). It is depends on amount records per page - I have checked it, but why it takes too long time, becouse of relationships? The website is built in Python/Django. Any advices/opinion?

I prefer the second, but it requires the IReporter to have a CameraData field (which gets changed by GetCameraInfo()), which feels weird.
