• silverlight vs ASP.NET MVC

  I'm debating whether to use Silverlight 2.0 vs ASP.NET MVC for a web application. The web application will be a subscription free service marketing all age groups. It's important the source is highly testable, but also with the Web 2.0 movement a graphical web application is important as well for competitive reasons. I'm assuming silverlight is better than the ajax helpers/MVC graphically, but foundation-wise testing is better/easier with MVC. Possibly an MVP pattern with Silverlight could increase the testability of the source. Could anyone elaborate on the pros/cons of each technology and recommend one or the other based on the above? (addition 9/22/08) In regards to allowing search engines to index the site, using either technology it will utilize a backend database whereas a lot of the content will be dynamically generated. Based on some of the comments, when we talk of the searchable content would the home page of the application if written in silverlight be searchable? Would I be able to get the site to appear in a google search?

For example, I would like to search every clients that has at least category 1 and 2 (would return client #1). How can I achieve that? Thanks!

• Show Ubuntu logo in Byobu (tmux) status bar?

  For some reason my Byobu (tmux) status bar is showing TAB instead of the ubuntu logo. This: where it should be this: I've tried installing some different fonts, but have not corrected the issue yet. Any ideas? Further information: sudo apt-get install ttf-ubuntu-font-family Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ttf-ubuntu-font-family is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Update: fc-list on my computer shows all the fonts with the prefix /usr/share/fonts/ e.g., /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ubuntu-font-family/UbuntuMono-R.ttf: Ubuntu Mono:style=Regular But the same command on a working system shows fonts listed thus: Ubuntu Mono:style=Bold Italic Perhaps it's a font location problem?

• Why does php show error for my SQL query

  UPDATE: My mistake - I made a typo. Nevermind this question. I'm using php to update a mysql database. The resultant query I'm using when i print it out on my webpage before executing is as follows: INSERT INTO perch2_content_items (itemOrder, regionID, pageID, itemRev, itemID, itemJSON, itemSearch ) SELECT MAX(itemOrder)+1, 105, 81, 11, 118, 'json', 'search' FROM perch2_content_items WHERE regionID=105 When I copy and paste this query directly into the phpmyadmin SQL interface, it works fine. The table gets updated. However, when I try to execute it using my php code as follows, it throws an error. $insertToPerch = "INSERT INTO perch2_content_items (itemOrder, regionID, pageID, itemRev, itemID, itemJSON, itemSearch ) SELECT MAX(itemOrder)+1, $regionID, $pageID, $regionRev, $newItemID, 'json', 'search' FROM perch2_content_items WHERE regionID=$regionID"; mysql_query(insertToPerch) or die(mysql_error()); The error I'm getting is: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'insertToPerch' at line 1 Can anybody help me figure out why it is failing.

• Easy to use/learn PHP framework?

  I need to build a php app, and I was thinking about using a framework (never used one before). I've been browsing around some but most of them seems kinda complicated, I really liked what I saw about Symfony, but it looks like I will have to spend like a month until I really understand how to use it, and in one month I could code the app I have in mind 5 times without a framework. But I want to use one to "standardize" my code and prevent bugs. So I was wondering if someone could share with me which php frameworks you think are easier to learn how to use. My application will use mysql, and it will have some sort of "search engine" to search data that will be populated on the database using a few "scraper scripts" (that I also wants to code using the framework).

  My intention here is to select all entries (Bookings) between "begin" (begin_prefix) and "end" (end_prefix) BUT! The important thing is: If I have a booking at 07:25-10:00 - you query for 09:00-10:00 it should still show the booking because it reserves the room until 10 no matter what .. • Why is the superblock last mount time in the future?

  Future time: Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I regularly have to fun fsck and reset my clock because it shows a 'future time' : Err.Msg. "superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED.   Spring-data-rest does a great job exposing entities via their primary key for GET, PUT and DELETE etc. operations. /myentityies/123 It also exposes search operations. /myentities/search/byMyOtherKey?myOtherKey=123 In my case the entities have a number of alternate keys. The systems calling us, will know the objects by these IDs, rather than our internal primary key. Is it possible to expose the objects via another URL and have the GET, PUT and DELETE handled by the built-in spring-data-rest controllers? /myentities/myotherkey/456 We'd like to avoid forcing the calling systems to have to make two requests for each update. I've tried playing with @RestResource path value, but there doesn't seem to be a way to add additional paths.

  I'm using the built-in ajax functionality of MVC2. Basically the user types a search query, and on every key press a set of results for the query is shown. This works fine in almost all cases, but sometimes the server is a bit slow with a single response, and thus the result for the next key stroke is returned before the previous. When the previous key stroke result set is finally returned to the client it will overwrite the results for the newer search query that should actually have been shown. My code follows more or less along these lines: <% using (Ajax.BeginForm("SearchUser", null, new AjaxOptions() { UpdateTargetId = "findUserResults" }, new { id = "findUserAjaxForm" })) {%> Every keystroke submits this form and thus outputs the results in the 'findUserResults' element. Most of the times people hear "forum" they imagine unresponsive phpBB with terrible color scheme and unnecessarily huge user info sections (avatar, signature) about 600px high each, which make it impossible to see more than 5 posts on a really big screen. I'd like it to be the other way around with my future forum.   I have recently installed ubuntu 14.04 in virtual box. Now I want to install g++ 4.7 in it. I am trying this command in terminal but its not working. sudo apt-get install g++-4.7 Reading package list... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package g++-4.7 E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'g++-4.7' But I find gcc was there with Ubuntu 14.04 installation itself. How could I install g++ in ubuntu 14.04 and any version of g++ abouve 4.7.2 is fine with me.

• PHP: xml_parse replaces entities and "?" character

  How can I describe something I can't quite put my finger on? I have a module for RSS reading "magpierss" it uses xml_parse() and after extensive troubleshooting all I can come up with is that it removes certain entities like "?" character. I haven't written this module myself but I have traced the code until the part uses xml_parse() and then the output is just replaced. And to my disappointment this behavior exists on our production server only and not the local server. I have compared both php.ini file to search for any differences but couldn't find anything. Could anyone please direct on where to search exactly, i don't even know which direction to start from. Thanks

I can do type1 == type2 and get general equality I can have a recursive loop where I repeat the above step for type1.BaseType until the BaseType is null. I can do type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null to check if type2 is an interface of type1 If I put it all together, I get if ( type2.IsInterface ) return type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null; while ( type1 != null ) { if ( type1 == type2 ) return true; type1 = type1.BaseType; } return false; Is that all the is keyword is. I cannot find the right keyword to plug into the Reflector search to find the function and a google search on "is" was not really helpful

• MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. The aim is to use this as a search tool to allow me to filter results to product IDs only matching the requested feature set. A query of SELECT feature_id FROM product_features WHERE feature_finder_id = '1' AND feature_status_yn = 'y' will return all of the features of a given product. But how can I select all products (feature_product_id) that have a 'y' value when they are on separate lines? Multiple queries might be one way to do it, but I'm wondering whether there's a more elegant solution based purely in SQL.

• TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

  With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

  I am aware of passing data between jsp in spring web flow. Is it possible to transfer data between html pages driven by spring web flow. I don't want to use the HTML5 local storage capabilities. Example: Page 1: Search box for an employee id. Page 2: Search result for the employee details. Two ways that I could think: Get the employee details in page 1 by ajax and pass the result to the page two. Pass the employee id to page 2 and get the result by ajax in onload. • To canvas, or not to canvas, when building browser-based games?

  Background: I have extensive development background, but the last time I coded a game was many years ago. My Javascript skills are quite limited, and I intend to improve them by building a simple game — Tetris, Pac-man, or something of that complexity level. Question: It seems to me that a fundamental choice I need to make is whether I should render on a <canvas> element or not. With a canvas, I have basic tools for rendering points, lines, and more complex things on top of that. Presumably there are, or will be, also various frameworks to help with this. Without a canvas, I could keep my objects in the DOM-tree, like a regular webpage, only quite complex, with many overlapping elements. Is one approach better than the other? Are they mutually exclusive? How do I know which to pick?

• Not able to create Live CD

  I downloaded 12.04.1 on a Windows 7 machine. I burnt a DVD from the ISO image using Windows Disc Image Burner. I had 'verify disc' on. The disc was created successfully with no errors. I was not able to use this disc for installing Ubuntu on another Windows 7 machine. I do not get the Welcome Screen on booting. I find that on the disc I burnt, I do not find bin, disc tree, programs directories and cdromupgrade, start.*, ubuntu* files. I found the boot directory and WUBI executable file. I tried downloading several times with the same result. I had similar problem earlier with 11.04. Can you please let me where the problem is?

• I have to make a simple app that connects devices in a network, but I have no idea of how to this

  I want to write an App for android that has only one ListView. The App will constantly search for anything (mobile devices, desktops, etc.) that is connected in the wifi network. The problem is, I have no idea how to do this. What do I need to study? I comprehend I'd need to use a Thread or a Runnable to constantly search for those devices. Also I know very little about TCP, UDP or any internet protocols. So, can someone give me a basis of what I need to learn to develop this App?
