• Why doesn't Gradle include transitive dependencies in compile / runtime classpath?

  I'm learning how Gradle works, and I can't understand how it resolves a project transitive dependencies. For now, I have two projects : projectA : which has a couple of dependencies on external libraries projectB : which has only one dependency on projectA No matter how I try, when I build projectB, gradle doesn't include any projectA dependencies (X and Y) in projectB's compile or runtime classpath. I've only managed to make it work by including projectA's dependencies in projectB's build script, which, in my opinion does not make any sense. These dependencies should be automatically attached to projectB. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something but I can't figure out what. I've read about "lib dependencies", but it seems to apply only to local projects like described here, not on external dependencies. • Does the "security" repository provides anything not found in the "updates" repository?

  For the limited number of package I looked at (e.g. apache), I found that the package version in the updates repository is always newer than or equal to the version available in the security repository (provided that they exist). This gives me the impression that all security patches posted to the security repository are also posted to the updates repository. If this is true, I can remove all <release_name>-security entries in my apt sources.list and the <release_name>-updates entries will still give me the security patches. This will speed up apt-get update quite a bit. The best documentation I can found regarding the repositories is on the community help page "Important Security Updates (raring-security)". Patches for security vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages. They are managed by the Ubuntu Security Team and are designed to change the behavior of the package as little as possible -- in fact, the minimum required to resolve the security problem. As a result, they tend to be very low-risk to apply and all users are urged to apply security updates. "Recommended Updates (raring-updates)". Updates for serious bugs in Ubuntu packaging that do not affect the security of the system. However, it does not mention whether the updates repository also includes everything in the security repository. Can anyone confirm (or disconfirm) this?

• Does JAXP natively parse HTML?

  So, I whip up a quick test case in Java 7 to grab a couple of elements from random URIs, and see if the built-in parsing stuff will do what I need. Here's the basic setup (with exception handling etc omitted): DocumentBuilderFactory dbfac = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder dbuild = dbfac.newDocumentBuilder(); Document doc = dbuild.parse("uri-goes-here"); With no error handler installed, the parse method throws exceptions on fatal parse errors. When getting the standard Apache 2.2 directory index page from a local server: a SAXParseException with the message White spaces are required between publicId and systemId. The doctype looks ok to me, whitespace and all. When getting a page off a Drupal 7 generated site, it never finishes. The parse method seems to hang. No exceptions thrown, never returns. When getting http://www.oracle.com, a SAXParseException with the message The element type "meta" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</meta>". So it would appear that the default setup I've used here doesn't handle HTML, only strictly written XML. My question is: can JAXP be used out-of-the-box from openJDK 7 to parse HTML from the wild (without insane gesticulations), or am I better off looking for an HTML 5 parser? PS this is for something I may not open-source, so licensing is also an issue :(

• apt-mirror - Changing source mirror creates new folder for downloads

  I have a local Ubuntu mirror running on ubuntu 10.04 in my office which uses archive.ubuntu.com to download updates and releases. I have been running this mirror since Ubuntu's Hardy Heron release. It downloads everything under /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com/ folder. Recently I came to know that the mirror in India i.e. in.archive.ubuntu.com is a lot faster for me than http://archive.ubuntu.com which is based in UK. Therefore to download latest release QUANTAL QUETZAL I configured Indian mirror in /etc/apt/mirror.list After making this change and leaving apt-mirror to run overnight I found that it downloaded everything to a new folder called "in.archive.ubuntu.com" so now I have two folders where apt-mirror downloads updates. /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/archive.ubuntu.com/ /export/ubuntu-repo1/apt-mirror/mirror/in.archive.ubuntu.com/ Now, since apache does not have "in.archive.ubuntu.com" configured, Ubuntu clients are unable to access QUANTAL QUETZAL release and its updates. My question is: Is there a way I could copy everything downloaded under "in.archive.ubuntu.com" to "archive.ubuntu.com" so all new updates of the latest release become accessible to Ubuntu clients? Secondly, Can I configure apt-mirror to download everything to archive.ubuntu.com even using Indian mirror? Thanks a lot for your help in advance. I Kazi

• Best way to convert existing project to be open source in GitHub

  I've been working on a personal closed source project for some time and would like to make it open source. I've never created my own open source project before so it will be a good learning experience. I have been using GitHub as source control, so once I've written some decent docs on how to use and develop for it etc, it should be as simple as switching the repo to be public right? I guess my main question is around licencing. I was thinking of going with Apache 2.0 licence just because it seems to be widely used. It requires the licence header to be attached to all the source files, but if I do that now then all the other commits in the past will have it missing. Does that mean some one could pull an earlier version and it wouldn't have a licence? Is it best to start a new repo with the initial commit containing all the code with licence headers? Or maybe is there some advanced Git functionality that allows me to apply the licence header to all existing commits some how? Cheers.

  Related: Apache: How can I force the browser to reload CSS files? I'm building an xml page (on an apache2) that is supposed to be translated to xhtml by the browser, so my server also serves a main.xslt which is used as stylesheet by the xml file, similar to the scenario with the css files in the linked question. However, none of tricks provided in either that answer, nor some issues on SO solve the issue for Opera. While Firefox responds to F5 by fetching not only the xml file but also the xslt file, Opera only reloads the xml file. I tried both, setting the Last-Modified HTTP header via an .htaccess file and using the expires module of apache2. This is what my .htaccess looks right now: AddType text/xsl;charset=utf-8 .xslt ExpiresByType text/xsl "modification plus 1 second" Header set Last-Modified "Wed, 08 Jan 2000 23:11:55 GMT" #Header set Last-Modified "Wed, 08 Jan 2020 23:11:55 GMT" If I open the xsl myself and manually reload it, the xml presentation is updated as well, but this is tedious for development. Note: There is no php or any kind of scripting involved. Everything is static.

• Web developing- Strange happenings

  As I'm teaching myself PHP and MySQL during break, I'm experimenting coding in a Ubuntu virtual machine where Apache, MySQL and PHP have been installed and configured to a shared folder. I'm not a big fan of Kompozer because the source code layout is a PIA, so I've started checking out gPHPEdit. However, since using it, I've come across two issues: when I edit the .html and .php files, sometimes the file extension will change to .html~ and .php~, becoming invisible to the browser. The only solution is to switch to Windows, right click and rename the file extension. In Ubuntu Firefox, when I click on my prpject's Submit button for in a practice form, a dialog box pops up asking what Firefox should do with the .php file, rather than simply displaying it in the browser. When I do this in Windows Chrome & Firefox, it goes right to the response page. I'm not sure if this behavior is limited to gPHPEdit/Kompozer, but I've never noticed this happening in Dreamweaver. Any solutions? EDIT The behavior in Point 1 occurs both when Dreamweaver is open in Windows accessing the same files and when it is not. I changed the extension filename of welcome.php, added a comment in gPHPEdit, and the file changed to welcome.php~ upon saving.

• Google bots are severely affecting site performance

  I have an aggregate site on a linux server that pulls in feeds from a universe of about 2,000 blogs. It's in Wordpress 3.4.2 and I have a cron job that is staggered to run five times an hour on another server to pull in the stories and then publish them to the front page of this site. This is so I didn't put too much pressure all on one server. However, the Google bots, which visit a few times every hour bring the server to its knees in the morning and evenings when there is an increase in traffic on the site. The bots have something like 30,000 links to follow at this point. How do I throttle the bots to simply grab the new stories off the front page and stop there? EDIT- Details of my server configuration: The way we have this set up is the server that handles all the publishing is an unmanaged instance via AWS. It mounts the NFS server and connects to the RDS to update content, etc. You get to this publishing instance via a plugin that detects the wp-admin link and then redirects you into there. The front end app server also mounts the NFS and requests data from the RDS. It is the only one that has the WP Super Cache on it.... The OS is Ubuntu on the App server and the NFS runs CentOs. The front end is Nginx and the publishing server is Apache.

• Conditional attribute in XML - most concise solution?

  I am tasked with setting up conditional profiling - a method of tagging chunks of XML with an attribute, which will then be used as a conditional value to extract subset of that XML. Have a look at another definition/example: DITA profiling The XML is documents that are equivalent to printed books - i.e. documents that are often looked at by a human, even if indirectly. Therefore I am looking at a few requirements here: 1. keeping the value list brief - so it doesn't affect the readability of the document 2. be able to process with standard XML tools - a space-separated list inside an attribute is still probably fine, but I'd rather not use too much regexp for this 3. be obvious for various users, including 3rd parties, which content goes where 4. Be easy to maintain going forward Therefore one easy solution is: The problem with this: 1. As the list grows the value of the attribute can be a bit verbose 2. One needs to explicitly state every value even if it's a scenario of this vs everything else Therefore I am also looking at other approaches such as: 1. Using + and - modifiers, Apache htaccess style to override the default cascading of profiling - by default all content goes everywhere and if we want to exclude a bit we just say "-kindle". It does require parsing the whole tree, is not supported by editing tools and one needs to regexp the attribute value a bit deeper... 2. Using an intermediate file to define groups of values such as "other" or "non-print", example of this in DITA. It allows concise XML as well as different grouping and values for each document but it does create a certain level of abstraction which may make it a little less obvious for a 3rd party? Altogether, if you received such XML and were tasked to process it, which option you'd rather receive? If you have any experiences like that, even in an unrelated areas such a builds, don't hesitate to comment!

• GWT: reporting crawling errors for non existing links

  Google Webmaster Tools is reporting crawl errors for links that never existed, and if i check the "Linked from" tab for a given error link, it shows another that never existed. They all mention joomla/ which is not the cms used on this domain (it's wordpress fyi). • Optimizing MySQL -

  I've been researching how to optimize MySQL a bit, but I still have a few questions. MySQL Primer Results http://pastie.org/private/lzjukl8wacxfjbjhge6vw Based on this, the first problem seems to be that the max_connections limit is too low. I had a similar problem with Apache initially, the max connection limit was set to 100, and the web server would frequently lock up and take an excruciatingly long time to deliver pages. Raising the connection limit to 512 fixed this issue, and I read that raising the connection limit on MySQL to match this was considered good practice. Being that MySQL has actually been "locking up" recently as well (connections have been refused entirely for a few minutes at a time at random intervals) I'm assuming this is the main cause of the issue. However, as far as table cache goes, I'm not sure what I should set this as. I've read that setting this too high can hinder performance further, so should I raise this to right around 551, 560, 600, or do something else? Lastly, as far as raising the join_buffer_size value goes, this doesn't even seem to be included in Debian's my.cnf file by default. Assuming there's not much I can do about adding indexes, should I look into raising this? Any suggested values? Any suggestions in general here would be appreciated as well. Edit: Here's the number of open tables the MySQL server is reporting. I believe this value is related to my question (Opened_tables: 22574)

• The Mystery of the Vanishing Disk Space

  My disk space is dwindling by about 2GB a day! But I am still losing the war. Finally, I realised I have a big misunderstanding: julian@server1:~$ sudo du -h / | tail -n 1 16G / All of my files in / only add up to 16 GB. That leaves 110 GB unaccounted for! Clearly I have a misunderstanding: I thought the '/dev/sda4' line represented all the files visible from '/'. What should I be reading to understand where the other storage has gone? More details: I have an Ubuntu 11.10 server, that was set-up by data-center staff. It is running my own code (which is fairly prolific with log files, but otherwise doesn't store much stuff on the drive) duplicity for backups (which tends to store a lot of signature files) various other standard services, like Apache, nagios, etc. They are very lightly used. It has been up for about 4 months without a reboot. I lied about the du output (simplified it for effect). It also complained about not being able to access GVFS and the du processes's own resources. • Bizarre image loading problem from apache2

  Users have complained a few times about seeing a bizarre set of pink or green stripes on our webpage. At first I thought there were a rash of video card outages, but then someone sent me a screenshot from their browser (IE8). I later saw the same thing, but with slightly different colors on Chrome. Users have experienced this on their iPads and iPhones (iOS Safari). Because I've optimized the site to cache images, the bad image stays around until you clear your cache, so once you do, it resolves itself. My assumption is that the transmission of the image is being cut off mid-stream and then staying that way, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. • GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 Maven Coordinates

  GlassFish Server 3.1.2.2 was released a few weeks ago. This micro release fixed a couple of important bugfixes - one in JAX-WS (JAX-WS-1059) and another one related to JK listener with Apache + mod_ajp_proxy (GLASSFISH-18446). This release is already integrated in NetBeans 7.2 and you can download separately from here. Maven coordinates for this build are now also described on the download page.
