• Do we really need a safe release macro?

  Quite a lot of people seem to use a macro such as #define SAFE_RELEASE(X) [X release]; X = nil; (myself included). I've been reassessing why I am using it and wanted to canvas some opinion. The purpose (I think) for using this macro is so that if you were to accidentally use your object after releasing it then you won't get a bad access exception because objective-c will quite happily ignore it when the object is nil. It strikes me that this has the potential to mask some obscure bugs. Maybe it would actually be preferable for the program to crash when you try to use X again. That way during testing you can find the issue and improve the code. Does this macro encourage lazy programming? Thoughts?

• Dynamically create PHPUnit tests from data-file

  I have a data file with input and expected outputs. An example could be: input: output: 2 3 3 5 4 Exception 5 8 ... ... Currently I have a custom solution to read from the data file and perform a test for each {input,output} pair. I would like to convert this into a PHPUnit based solution and I would like to have one test per input using the test name forXassertY. So the first three tests would be called for2assert3(), for3assert5() and for4assertException(). I do not want to convert my existing data to tests if it's possible to create the test methods dynamically and keep the data file as the basis of these tests. I want to convert it to PHPUnit as I want to add some other tests later on and also process and view the output using Hudson. Suggestions?

  I have the piece of code that reads data from file. I want to force IOException in this code for testing purpose (I want to check if code throws correct custom exception in this case). Is there a some way to create a file which is protected from being read, for example? Maybe dealing with some security checks can help? Please, note that passing name to not-existent file cannot help, because FileNotFoundException has separate catch clause. • android: ListView.setAdapter() is causing IllegalStateException. Not sure how to fix it.

  I'm trying to populate a listview with the contents of various ListAdapters based upon the results of a switch statement nested in an OnItemClickListener. When clicking the item, the application was force closing, so I ran it through the dev tools and android debugger. Eclipse is showing me the in the main thread that the application has suspended due an IllegalStateException. I have a marginal understanding of what the particular exception indicates, but not sure how to fix it, or what in my code is causing it to be thrown.   Hi I'm trying to write a piece of code for a simple verification method as part of a MVC. At present the SQL is not written as a prepared statement so obviously it is at risk to a SQL injection so any help in regards to writing the SQL as a prepared statement would be really helpful. • NoClassDefFoundError when running java tool under Xcode

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a Java Tool by using Xcode. I've already changed my build.xml to have Xcode target java 1.6 and not 1.3 so I can use generics. I'm getting no build errors and using 'javac' and 'java' in the terminal works. Now I want it to work in Xcode as well. I keep getting the following error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: MyClass where 'MyClass' is the class containing the main method. It probably has something to do with the classpath, which as the build.xml prescribes is "${bin}". There is a bin folder in my project folder, and it contains all the .class files needed to run the program. If anybody could help me, it'd be great!

• How to make IIS wait for WCF service gets ready?

  I have a WCF service hosted in IIS 7. It takes some minutes until this service finish to load its data and ready for external calls. Data loads in internal thread. The problem is that from IIS point the service is ready just after it was activated (by some call), and it process a request without waiting for data to be loaded. Is it possible to tell IIS that the service is still loading and make this service unavailable for requests? No problem if such request will throw an exception.

• Mono 2.10.5 Runtime error on Ubuntu 11.10

  I've install mono-runtime via apt in order to run my Mono console application on Ubuntu via SSH. However, when I run the command mono myapp.exe, It exits, with no message, and my program does nothing. If I throw the -v switch to Mono, such as mono -v myapp.exe, I get about 10k lines of output (as expected, -v is verbose), with the first few lines being: converting method System.OutOfMemoryException:.ctor (string) Method System.OutOfMemoryException:.ctor (string) emitted at 0xb7052c28 to 0xb7052c4b (code length 35) [myapp.exe] converting method (wrapper runtime-invoke) <Module>:runtime_invoke_void__this___object (object,intptr,intptr,intptr) Method (wrapper runtime-invoke) <Module>:runtime_invoke_void__this___object (object,intptr,intptr,intptr) emitted at 0xb7052c68 to 0xb7052cf6 (code length 142) [myapp.exe] converting method System.SystemException:.ctor (string) I read this as the runtime throwing an OutOfMemory exception, but the machine is under no intense load, has plenty of available RAM, and is running nothing other that system processes. I've removed and reinstalled Mono countless times, and have even run the executable on other machines perfectly fine. Am I missing something completely obvious here?

  From within the setup_app function (websetup.py) of a pylons i18n application, which is making use of a db, I was trying to initiate multilingual content to be inserted into the db. Anyone has tried some trick on a similar story ?

• Java file delete on NFS drive

  Hey guys. I am trying to delete a file on a NFS drive. I have had other problems manipulating files on remote drives such as moving a file - however i got around it by not using the conventional method i.e renameFile but instead properly using input and output streams. However using the File.delete() returns false , and I have heard suggestions on using the apache commons io FileUtils class - however it just throws an IO exception. Does anybody have any suggestions on a way to delete a file on a network mounted drive using java? Thanks
