• Download a file over an active SSH session

  So I'm SSHed into my Ubuntu server from my Ubuntu desktop. I'm at a certain path and I want to download a file to my local filesystem (preferably the path I was at before I entered the SSH session). I could mount SSH and pull the file across by mouse but what if I was trying to get a root file and logging in by root directly is disallowed? Even if that wasn't the case (it isn't now), surely there must be a simple way of pulling back a file over an active SSH connection. Surely!

• How do I access an external drive mounted on a machine on my own network?

  I've got one desktop computer Ubuntu 11.04 with an external USB drive mounted on it on the home WRT54L Linux network (192.168.0.2), and when I arrive at home with my laptop, I want to be able to mount the external USB drive from my Ubuntu 11.04 laptop (192.168.0.3) to the desktop, without having to unplug it from the desktop, that is accessing it. Is it possible to send a remote mount command to the desktop usb drive from my laptop? Ideally something that creates a local mountpoint I can just call locally from the programs installed in my laptop, like: username@laptop ~ ./myprograminlaptop /my/file/which/is/actually/on/the/desktop/file.txt

  Last week, I had the opportunity to talk about Java EE 7 in Nancy (Lorrraine - France) and Kiev (Ukraine). The first event was arranged by the local Lorraine JUG while the second one was a largest conference organised by the Ukraine Java User Group. Based on the overall feedback and discussions I had during those two events, it is clear that the WebSocket API (JSR 356) is really a hot topic. • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 1: Why Build Smart Phone Apps

  This is part 1 in a series of post based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. Intro Most of us already carry smartphones. We play games on them. We keep up with what is going on with our friends and our favorite teams. We take pictures of our kids at their events. But the question is if that is all they are good for. Many companies have aspects of their business that lend themselves to being performed by mobile devices. Some of them lean toward larger device such as tablets, but many can be executed on smartphones. This and the following articles will discuss some of the possible applications of smartphone technology for businesses, the platforms that are available and the considerations you need to make when building them. I'll take a look at some specific scenarios and wrap up with a couple of capabilities that are just emerging that can be used in the future. Why Build Enterprise Smartphone Applications So what are some of the ways that you can leverage smartphone technology to gain efficiency in your business or a clients business. There are a few major areas that I have seen mobile platforms being an advantage to. Your mobile sales force is a key candidate for leveraging smartphone apps.  They can visit clients in their retail location and place orders on site. It is a more personal approach which can gain you customer loyalty.  A sales person may also gather information about the way a client does business or who their target market is. This allows them you to focus marketing information or build customized support for your customer. You may also have need to track physical inventory in a store. This is something that has historically been done with laser scanners, but with the camera capabilities in today's phones and tablets it is possible to use more general multi-purpose devices.  This can save costs on both hardware and telecommunication contracts. Delivery verification is another area that historically has been the domain of specialized devices but can now be accomplished with smartphones.  This also reduces costs because it is also used for communicating with the driver and other operations.  Add to that the navigation capability of smartphones and you can see how the return on investment increases. Executives are always on the go. They spend most of their time in meetings and yet they need access to decision making information at their finger tips. With a smartphone app they can get alerts when major sales are closed or critical accounting process are completed that may need their attention. They can also answer questions by instantly pulling up BI reports. I have often heard operations support people say that they need things like VPN and RDP from their phones. If they can also have notifications of outages or critical support requests they can be react to situations without needing to be tied to their desks. • Help installing?

  I'm having a really big problem with installing Ubuntu on my computer. It seems that when I try to install from BIOS from the CD, nothing happens, and when I say nothing happens it boots up my computer like usual. When I try to install from the CD from My Computer directly from the wubi.exe file, nothing happens. THEN when I try to install from the boot helper, it gives me this error: An error occurred: Could not retrieve the required installation files For more information please see the log file: c:\users\Meghan\appdata\local\temp\wubi-14.04-rev286.log Will it help if I say I have a pirated version of Windows? Maybe that's why? I'm frustrated, and I'm not sure what to do. Please help me

• Legality of modifying and distributing the JRE

  I see that Google App Engine apps run on a so-called secured sandbox JRE; that is, a JRE that Google modified and that makes changes to certain JRE types. This is how GAE prevents developers from writing apps that can do things like: Access the local file system via File Make remote JDBC calls Use JNDI Lots of other restrictions We have a similar need where we have an app that developers will be able to write plugins for. These plugins will need to utilize an API (a JAR) that we distribute with our app. We cannot afford for plugins to do certain things, particularly on the end user's file system, and need to modify the File class in a similar manner that GAE does. Long back-story short, this means we'll need to ship our app with a custom, modified JRE. My question: is this legal to do, or did Google likely pay Oracle some fee to modify/distribute their own JRE for app engine?

• Will javascript be in the HTML5 standard

  I'm pretty new to the web development scene, and I just want to be absolutely clear on this because I've read a few conflicting statements. I was under the impression that "html5" is a particular way of constructing xml to represent data for a webpage and "javascript" is a programming language that runs as client-side code in the browser. But left and right I see APIs for javascript (workers, geolocation, local storage, etc.) being referred to as an "html5 technology". Wikipedia says that html5 doesn't have a standard yet, so I can't look it up to see if it somehow mandates stuff about javascript. So will APIs for javascript somehow be apart of the html5 standard? Or has it become a common bad practice to label javascript APIs "html5 technology"?

• No sound/audio after resuming from sleep

  I've made a fresh UEFI install of Ubuntu 13.10 (64 bit) on a Lenovo Ideapad Z510 laptop with Intel i5 4200M processor. Ubuntu is the only OS installed on the computer, secure boot disabled. Everythings works fine (backlight issue fixed after editing rc.local file), the only minor trouble I have is resuming the laptop from "sleep" mode. If I close the lid and then wake the laptop opening it again, there is no audio/sound. I need to restart the computer (not even logging out helps). If I suspend the computer in a graphical way (not closing the lid): gearwheel in top right of the screen -- suspend and wake it up/turning on, audio works with no issues. Ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

  I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But can’t find best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and let’s say, copy newest one to a pendrive at the end of the week. Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. As of rsnapshot, Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs. More over there is no way to make it respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as a full snapshot. Renting a server is pretty expensive so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like in my local host.

• juju: How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm? • unable to start regionservers in HBase

  I have a problem starting regionservers on slave PCs. When I enlist only master PC in conf/regionservers everything works fine but when I add two more slaves to it the hbase does not start. If I delete all hbase folders in the tmp folder from all PCs and then start regionserver (with 3 regionservers enlisted) the hbase gets started but when I try to create a table it again fails (gets stuck). I am using hadoop 0.20.0 which is working fine and hbase 0.92.0. I have 3 PCs in cluster, one master and two slaves. Also tell that is DNS (both forward and backward lookup working) necessary for hbase in my case? Is there any way to replicate hbase table to all region servers? I.e. I want to have a copy of table at each PC and want to access them locally (when I execute map task they should use their local copy of hbase table).

  I have a web application in which i need to show a big number of data or records for clients. Now i 'll use pagination but i was wondering should I: Load all the data once then pagination, sorting and sarching 'll be easy..But it 'll takes big time(using local DB it takes up to 9 sec.) Or each time i show new page(from the pagination) i make a new request to server and then new request to DB to get the next records..But then what if the client click on Prev button, i 'll make a new request to get data that I had previously..Should i cach data that are loaded before and how if that's good technique? So load all data once or make a new request every time i need data that maybe have been loaded before. I'm using ASP.NET MVC SPA with durandaljs and knockoutjs

• Comparisons of Javascript 'data grids'?

  I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

• Advice on approaching a significant rearrangement/refactoring?

  I'm working on an application (hobby project, solo programmer, small-medium size), and I have recently redesigned a significant part of it. The program already works in it's current state, but I decided to reimplement things to improve the OO design. I'm about to implement this new design by refactoring a big part of the application. Thing is I'm not sure where to start. Obviously, by the nature of a rearrangement, the moment you change one part of the program several other parts (at least temporarily) break. So it's a little 'scary' to rearrange something in a piece of software that already works. I'm asking for advice or some general guidelines: how should I approach a significant refactoring? When you approach rearranging large parts of your application, where do you start? Note that I'm interested only in re-arranging the high-level structure of the app. I have no intention of rewriting local algorithms.

• Periodic script execution

  I made a script that sends my local sensors temperature to a server in the internet and then I can see a graph of it. Everything works fine when I execute it manully. I have the latest ubuntu version. When it comes to run periodically every minute with crontab then nothing works. It doesnt send anything. I tried to run it as SUDO and as user, I tried to add it in the crontab file to run it from several locations like /bin/myscript.sh , /user/Desktop and many others...Nothing seems to work. Any Idea how to solve it? Thank you!
