• sharepoint 3.0 : access is denied after install

  I just finished install sharepoint 3.0 on a w2k3 enterprise server. It says installation successfully completed. Then when i attempt to go to 'Sharepoint Products and Technologies configuration wizard, i receive the following error: Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. What actually doesn't work as I expect is that username and password in the url are not recognized and the BASIC authorization form is displayed. Obviously it doesn't work from a third party application point of view, I need to pass those variables as GET request. Any suggestion?

  There are a few dashboard widget that are useful even when not going in Dashboard. For example, SVN Notifier sends a Growl notification when commits are made to a repository you want to watch. Or, Delivery Status does the same for status update on tracked packages. The thing is when I log into OS X, those status updates won't happen until the first time I actually enter into Dashboard, so it looks like they are not initialized at startup. How to fix this?

Then I need another that will add the Default gateway, so Windows and software updates can be run.   I need a basic FTP server on Linux (CentOS 5.5) without any security measure, since the server and the clients are located on a test LAN, not connected to the rest of the network, which itself uses non-routable IP's behind a NAT firewall with no incoming access to FTP. Some people recommend Vsftpd over PureFTPd or ProFTPd. No matter what I try, I can't get it to allow an anonymous user (ie. logging as "ftp" or "anonymous" and typing any string as password) to upload a file: # yum install vsftpd # mkdir /var/ftp/pub/upload # cat vsftpd.conf listen=YES anonymous_enable=YES local_enable=YES write_enable=YES xferlog_file=YES #anonymous users are restricted (chrooted) to anon_root #directory was created by root, hence owned by root.root anon_root=/var/ftp/pub/incoming anon_upload_enable=YES anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES #chroot_local_user=NO #chroot_list_enable=YES #chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list chown_uploads=YES When I log on from a client, here's what I get: 500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/var/ftp/pub/incoming I also tried "# chmod 777 /var/ftp/incoming/", but get the same error. • VMware Workstation reboot 32-bit host when starting 32/64-bit guest using VT-x

  I'm trying to start 64-bit guest (MacOSX and Windows7) on 32-bit host (Hardened Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.28-hardened-r9) using VMware Workstation (6.5.3.185404 and 7.0.1.227600). If VT-X disabled in BIOS, VMware refuse to start 64-bit guest (as expected). If VT-X enabled in BIOS, VMware start guest without complaining, but then, in about a second (I suppose as soon as guest try to switch on 64-bit) my host reboots (actually, it's more like reset - normal reboot procedure skipped and BIOS POST start immediately). My hardware is Core 2 Duo 6600 on ASUS P5B-Deluxe with latest stable BIOS 1101. I've power-cycled system, then enabled Vanderpool in BIOS. My CPU doesn't support Trusted Execution Technology, and there no way to disable it in BIOS. I've rebooted several times after that, sometimes with power-cycled, and ensure Vandertool is enabled in BIOS. I've also run VMware-guest64check-5.5.0-18463 tool, and it report "This host is capable of running a 64-bit guest operating system under this VMware product.". About a year ago I tried to disable hardened in kernel to ensure this isn't because of PaX/GrSecurity, but that doesn't help. I have not checked 32-bit guests with VT-X enabled yet, but without VT-X they works ok. ASUS provide "beta" BIOS updates, but according to their descriptions these updates doesn't fix this issue, so I'm not sure is it good idea to try it. My best guess now it's motherboard/BIOS bug. Any ideas? Update 1: I've tried to boot vt.iso provided at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8978 and here is it report: CPU 0: VT is enabled on this core CPU 1: VT is enabled on this core Update 2: I've just tried to boot 32-bit guests (Windows7, Ubuntu9.04 and Gentoo) using all possible virtualization modes. In Automatic, Automatic with Replay, Binary translation everything works, in Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI I got message "This host does not support EPT. Using software virtualization with a software MMU." and everything works. BUT in Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode all 32-bit guests reset host just like 64-bit guests! So, this issue is not specific to 64-bit guests. One more thing. Using Intel VT-x or AMD-V mode for both 32/64-bit guests my host reset right after starting VM, i.e. before VM BIOS POST and before guest even start booting. But using Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI VM BIOS runs ok, then 64-bit guests start booting (Windows7 completed "Loading files" progressbar), and only after that host reset.

• Hide usernames shown on Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop login screen

  When I remote desktop to my Windows Server 2008 (a hosted virtual server) I see a login screen showing an icon for each user in the system. I can click on a user then enter a password and login. This is a terrible security oversight in my opinion as it gives anyone that might want to compromise my server a full list of valid usernames. Is there a way to revert to the old style of login screen requiring both username and password? Thanks

  LS, I am using IIS7 with PHP (FastCGI). I set up the upload_tmp_dir to "X:\Temp" instead of leaving it empty, but it's still using "C:\Windows\Temp" for some reason. I did give the following users full rights : NETWORK SERVICE, (application pool user), IIS_IUSRS. I also restarted IIS after I made the change. I tried to create a directory inside the correct temp path using PHP, and that did work, so it's not a security issue. Kind regards, Matthias Vance

My VMWare player installation has setup the two network adaptor VMnet1 and VMnet8 and they are picked up as unidentified networks with no network access (i need this to activate my windows server installation on it). The option to change the network location is not available (this might be because of network policy on the domain despite having set this as configurable in the local security policy section). Is there anyway i can change how these networks are detected or alter the configuration of vmware to get around this?

  I have OpenBSD installed as a router/firewall, and have been thinking about trying either OpenBSD or FreeBSD out as a desktop system, as well. What kind of practical differences (not philosophical, like "OpenBSD's focus is security" [those are well explained at wikipedia ) are there between FreeBSD and OpenBSD? E.g. default shell, different commands or ways of configuring things etc.?

  We are using Cables Unlimited USB-2925 USB-to-Dual-DB9 serial cables, which use the Moschip MCS7720 controller. We have downloaded the newest driver from http://www.moschip.com/mcs7720.php, but that driver was last updated in 2005. It does not seem to be working with Macs running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of any updates for this driver, or are there any ways to get the driver to work with Snow Leopard?

  Hi, I would like to run apache as a limited user on Windows 2008 R2 for security reasons. I've created a user in the user group (let's call it apache), and set the user to run as in the services pane, but then I am unable to start the service (probably not enough permission to bind to port 80). What is the minimum privileges needed to run apache on windows 2008, or what should I do to allow the user apache to bind apache 2.2 to port 80? Thanks!

• How to fix network connection dead on startup, but okay after disable/enable?

  on Startup When my system starts up, the internet connection is dead. This causes various problems with startup items such as updates and auto-start programs failing. However, the connection is fine after going into Network and Sharing, Change adapter settings, then disabling and re-enabling the adapter. Any suggestions on why this is happening and how to fix it? • Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 can't access the internet

  Our 64-bit windows server can no longer access the internet although it is a web-server that is hosting webpages accessible by the internet. Since this dilemma the server can no longer receive windows updates or Symantec virus definitions. We have checked our firewalls so nothing is blocked. Any insight on why this issue happened would be appreciated. Also the server is running IE6 which we have been trying to update.

• Ubuntu 12.04: apt-get "failed to fetch"; apt is trying to fetch via old static IP

  Sample error: W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-security/universe/i18n/Translation-en Unable to connect to 192.168.1.70:8118: Now this was working just fine until I changed the IP this morning. I have the server set to a static IP of 10.0.1.70 and for years it has been 192.168.1.70 - the IP apt-get is trying to use right now. I use privoxy and tor thus the 8118 port. Like I said it all worked until I changed the static IP from 192.168.1.70 to 10.0.1.70. I was forced to do so because of router issues. (Long and involved story, I didn't really want to change the IP because I know something like this would happen.) The setup for TOR/Privoxy requires that has you point Privoxy at TOR via 127.0.0.1:9050. Then point curl, etc to Privoxy via $HOME/.bashrc. Typically you would set the listen to IP for Privoxy to 127.0.0.1 but if you want it accessible to the rest of the LAN you set the IP to the server's LAN IP. Which I did a long time ago and was working fine until this morning. I have changed all instances of 192.168.1.70 to 10.0.1.70 in both /etc/privoxy/config and $HOME/.bashrc. What makes this really strange for me is that curl is working fine. I curl icanhazip.com and voila I get a new IP every 10 minutes or so. I curl CNN.com and I get the short but sweet permanently moved to www.cnn.com message I expect. Firefox works fine. Ping works fine. And I've tested all of this via Remote Desktop over my LAN. So the connection appears to be fine for everything except apt. I've also rebooted hoping that would clear 192.168.1.70 from apt. So the connection to the internet and DNS aren't an issue for these programs. And they are, as far as I can tell, using Privoxy/TOR just fine. The real irony here is that I've tried to open up Privoxy to go to Ubuntu's servers directly without going through TOR to speed up the downloads from Ubuntu (did this months ago). So somewhere that I have not been able to find, apt has stored the IP 192.168.1.70. And 192.168.1.70 is no longer valid. Thanks for the help
