• Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

• Ubuntu 14.04 install on hardware with RAID

  I've just built a new machine using an ASUS Mobo with 8GB of RAM and set up RAID 10 with 4 new HDD. I want to install Ubuntu 14.04 on it and so far have tried to do so 3 times with no luck. The installation seems to work fine but after it has finished it restarts and all I get is a black screen. Is there something I am missing? I've completed the install on other machines before without issue I just never tried it on a machine with RAID set up.

• Trouble installing Ubuntu.

  I have a blank 1TB hard drive that I have run ubuntu on before. I recently formatted it and am trying to reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on there. Using the Universal USB installer and the 64-bit iso file, I booted up my computer with only my 1TB hard drive connected. I go through the installation process normally, until I restart my computer at the end. Once restarted, I start to experience the problem deal with here. When I run it normally, it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. When I select the "Recovery Mode" option, a bunch of lines scroll across the screen, the last of which is "hostap_pci: Registered netdevice wifi0". It then stops there with a blinking cursor. When I follow the instructions on the page I linked to (replacing "quiet splash" with "nomodeset") and bunch of lines scroll through after I press Ctrl+x. The last line displayed is Adding 8386556k swap on /dev/sda5. Priority:-1 extents:1 across: 8386556k It then stops there with a blinking cursor. How do I fix this problem?

• Ubuntu - Ruby Daemon script creates two processes - sh and ruby - PID file points at sh, not ruby

  The PID file for a ruby process I have running as a daemon is getting the wrong PID. It appears that running /etc/init.d/sinatra start creates two processes - sh and ruby, and the PID that ends up in the PID file is that of the sh process. This means that when I then run /etc/init.d/sinatra stop or /etc/init.d/sinatra restart, it is killing sh and leaving the ruby process still running. I'd like to know a) why is my script launching two processes - sh and ruby, and not just ruby, and b) how do I fix it to just launch ruby? Details of the setup: I have a small Sinatra server set up on an ubuntu server, running as a daemon. It is set to automatically at server startup run a script named sinatra in /etc/init.d that launches the a control script control.rb, which then runs a ruby daemon command to start the server. Now I need to configure iptables for network access. First of all I allow ssh sessions on port 8022 on the host system, then I allow all connections in state RELATED, ESTABLISHED. This is working ok. I install another system as guest, it's IP address is 192.168.10.2, and now I have two problems: I want to allow the access from this host to the outside world, cannot accomplish this. I can ssh from the host. I want to be able to ssh to the guest from the outside world using 8023 port. Cannot accomplish this. • How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

  I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted. • amazon ec2 ubuntu with gitlab and nginx - cant load?

  Ok, so I've spooled up an Amazon EC2 server running Ubuntu, and then followed the instructions below to install GitLab; http://doc.gitlab.com/ce/install/installation.html The only step I've not been able to complete is running the following check on the status; sudo -u git -H bundle exec rake gitlab:check RAILS_ENV=production I get the following error; rake aborted! Errno::ENOMEM: Cannot allocate memory - whoami Which I presume is becuase my EC2 is just running a free tier setup, so isn't that well spec'd. Regardless, I've been trying to access this through my browser. I've set up the elastic IP and pointed my domain at it (for the purpose of this, lets say its git.mydom.co.uk). Doing a whois on this domain shows me its pointing to the right place. For some reason though, I get the "Oops, Chrome could not connect to git.mydom.co.uk". Now - for a period of time I was getting the Nginx holding page (telling me I still needed to perform configuration). This though disappeared after removing the default file from /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/ (after reading this could be issue on a troubleshooting page). Since then, I've had nothing, even when I symlinked the file back in from /sites-available. I've tried changing the owner of the git.mydom.co.uk file sat inside /sites-enabled and /sites-available to www-data, as suggested here, but I could only change the permission of the file in /sites-available, and not the symlinked one in /sites-enabled.   Using Ubuntu Precise 64 bit, I'm facing a problem that I'm unable to solve and that I'll try to describe below: I'm using a console mode program (let's say abc) that uses Go, NodeJS, Java and Scala. Then, I guess that during the boot process, the script within /etc/init.d that starts abc is executed before that the different environment variables set within /etc/sudoers, /etc/environment and /etc/login.defs are loaded. • Ubuntu Server, 2 Ethernet Devices, Same Gateway - Want to force internet traffic through 1 device (or at least allow it to work!)

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 Server with 2 ethernet devices, eth0 and eth1. eth0 has a static IP of 192.168.1.210 eth1 has a static IP if 192.168.1.211 The DHCP server (which also serves as the internet gateway) sits at 192.168.1.1. The issue I have right now is when I have both plugged in, I can connect to both IPs over SSH internally, but I can't connect to the internet from the server. If I unplug one of the devices (e.g. eth1), then it works, no problem. (Also, I get the same result when I run sudo ifconfig eth1 down). Question, how can I configure it so that I can have both devices eth0 and eth1 play nice on the same network, but allow internet access as well? (I am open to either enforcing all inet traffic going through a single device, or through both, I'm flexible). From my google searching, it seems I could have a unique (or not popular) problem, so haven't been able to find a solution. Is this something that people generally don't do? The reason I want to make use of both ethernet devices is because I want to run different local traffic services on on both to split the load, so to speak... Thanks in advance. Before I display the file contents and the route table, when I am logged into the server (through SSH), I can not ping an external server, so this is the same issue I was experiencing that led to me posting this question. I ran a /etc/init.d/networking restart after making the file changes. • How do I make solr/jetty find the installed slf4j jars in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04's packaged Jetty in which I installed solr 4.3.1 (by copying the war file to /var/lib/jetty/webapps. When I start Jetty, I get this error: failed SolrRequestFilter: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Could not find necessary SLF4j logging jars. If using Jetty, the SLF4j logging jars need to go in the jetty lib/ext directory. The package libslf4j-java is installed, and the jars are in /usr/share/java: /usr/share/java/log4j-over-slf4j.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-api.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jcl.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jdk14.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-log4j12.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-migrator.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-nop.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-simple.jar but somehow, Jetty and/or Solr are not finding them. How do I make them find them? or how do I install some other jars where jetty/solr would find them?   I am asked to type some math formulas that can work in Microsoft Office and MathType equation editor. But I only have access to Ubuntu 12.04 near me, there is LibreOffice available under Ubuntu as well, but I am used to type math formulas in LaTex. So I wonder how to provide math formulas that will work in Microsoft Office and MathType, if I work under Ubuntu, preferably with LaTex but LibreOffice being also acceptable since it is still under Ubuntu?
