  • How do I identify and fix the cause of transaction log growth on SIMPLE recovery model databases?

    I recently upgraded our SQL Server 2008 installations to service pack 2. One of our databases is on the simple recovery model, but its transaction log is growing extremely fast. The path I'm currently investigating is that we have a transaction somewhere out there stuck in active state. Here is why: select name, recovery_model_desc, log_reuse_wait_desc from sys.databases where name in ('SimpleDB') name recovery_model_desc log_reuse_wait_desc SimpleDB SIMPLE ACTIVE_TRANSACTION When I check my active transactions, I get the following. So, my line of thinking is that the trans_sp_MScreate_peer_tables transaction is stuck for some reason and holding up transaction log truncation. Is this a plausible scenario? Correct me if my line of thinking is off, as I'm not a SQL Server expert. If this is correct, how do I erase that transaction so that my transaction log is truncated as usual?

  • Is my dns server being attacked? And what should I do about it?

    I've been having some intermittent dns problems with a web server, where certain isp's dns servers don't have my hostnames in cache and fail to look them up. At the same time, queries to opendns for those hostnames resolve correctly. It's intermittent, and it always works fine for me, so it's hard to identify the problem when someone reports connectivity problems to my site. In trying to figure this out, I've been looking at my logs to see if there are any errors I should know about. There are requests from multiple ip's, but each ip will request hundreds of times per day. So this smells to me like an attack. What is the defense against this?

    I have 3 interfaces: eth0 192.168.0.50/24 eth1 10.0.0.200/24 eth2 225.228.123.211 The default gateway is 192.168.0.1 which I want to keep as it is in the changes I want to make. I want to masquerade eth1 10.0.0.200/24 and enable NAT forwarding to eth2. So I have done this: ip route add 225.228.123.208/29 dev eth2 src 225.228.123.211 table t1 ip route add default via 225.228.123.209 dev eth2 table t1 ip rule add from 225.228.123.211 table t1 ip rule add to 225.228.123.211 table t1 Now I can receive ping replies from any internet host if I did: ping -I eth2 8.8.8.8 To enable NAT forwarding I did this: sudo iptables -A FORWARD -o eth2 -i eth1 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT sudo iptables -A FORWARD -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE But it isn't working. To test I used a client pc and put it on 10.0.0.0/24 network and gateway was set as 10.0.0.200. I want to have 192.168.0.1 as default gateway. And the traffic that comes in via eth1 10.0.0.200/24 should be forwarded to eth2 225.228.123.211. I have enabled forwarding on ubuntua also.

  • connecting to a network using route command

    I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers.     I've been having some issues with my RAID setup recently on my headless Ubuntu 10.04 server which means one of my mount requests is failing on bootup. Clearly I need to fix the RAID issue, but this machine is in my loft and having to crawl up there with a keyboard just so I can hit S a few times is extremely irritating. The exact message is as follows: The disk drive for /drv/photos is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery I'd still like Ubuntu to try and mount it, but is there any way to tell it not to wait for the device?

    I have both Ubuntu 12.10 and Win7 installed. I use the former mostly for scientific simulations and the latter for applications. The problem I came across with this configuration is that the simulations take quite a while, and I'm not satisfied enough with solutions like Wine to run the Windows apps while the simulation runs. I would rather not install the simulation programs again, since it took quite an effort. So, is it possible to boot the already installed version of Ubuntu from within Windows 7 via VirtualBox or or something else?

    I'm having a lot of trouble connecting to VPN. This used to work on my machine, but i recently did an update and it's stopped working. I'm not sure what the problem is.     I am using a MacBook Pro 8.2 with Ubuntu 12.04, and my wifi disconnects consistently. I followed the directions as detailed here here, however, and it works up to expected speeds, but after within an hours time, the wifi disconnects and the only way to solve the issue is to either reboot OR disable wireless and re-enable it. lsmod | grep cfg80211 outputs: cfg80211 178818 2 b43,mac80211 I suspect that I did not blacklist the correct driver and there are two drivers causing instability, however I have no idea if I actually did it correctly.

    I have recently had windows XP die on one of my machines, and have installed Linux UBUNTU. The OS works great, except for installing the Xerox Phaser 3160N printer. The OS can find and install the network printer, but when I print a test page, it tells me “Internal Error – Please use the correct driver”. I have the correct drivers, as your support team have sent me the link, (http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-3160/file-download/enau.html?operatingSystem=linux&fileLanguage=en_GB&contentId=105724&from=downloads&viewArchived=false) but I cannot install these drivers to run the printer. These are the instructions from the online guide for installing on a Linux machine: 1. Make sure that the machine is connected to your network and powered on. Also, your machine’s IP address should have been set. 2. Insert the supplied software CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3. Double-click CD-ROM icon that appears on your Linux desktop. 4. Double-click the Linux folder. 5. Double-click the install.sh icon. 6. The Xerox Installer window opens. Click Continue. 7. The Add printer wizard window opens. Click Next. 8. Select Network printer and click Search button. 9. The Printer’s IP address and model name appears on list field. 10. Select your machine and click Next. I get as far as step 5, and step 6 never happens, if it did, it would be very easy from there. There are options to add additional software to UBUNTU, however it does not recognise the installation CD as valid when I try to add it as a source. I installed the 4 drivers from this link https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=precise but still I can't get wireless or bluetooth to work. Even adaptive brightness I think isn't working. Can anyone suggest where to get the complete set of drivers? P.s. Additional drivers says no proprietary devices found which is weird.
