• How should I deal with user agent parsing in logs?

  My web app project includes logging functionality so we can see where visitors are coming from (referrer URL), what the popular user agents are, what pages are most popular, etc. The log is stored in SQL Server, and when I query the user agents I use a large (almost 100 lines) and growing CASE statement to separate the user agents using string matching (i.e. if the user agent contains the string "Firefox/9" then it's Firefox 9). Is there a better way to do this so I don't have to continually add to that CASE statement to deal with new browser releases? Also, how should I deal with less common, weird/unknown user agents? I've seen the following in the logs and been unable to find good information online about what they are: WordPress/3.3.1; http://www.facecolony.org Mozilla/4.0 ( http://www.hairirons.org redips; <a href=http://hairirons.org/>chi hair iron</a>) I'd guess they're bots/crawlers, but the sites they point to don't appear to reference web crawlers (or even be available sometimes). I've seen other user agents aren't familiar to me, but I know they're bots because they include "bot" or "spider" or something similar in them.

• Xml Serialization and the [Obsolete] Attribute

  I learned something new today: Starting with .NET 3.5, the XmlSerializer no longer serializes properties that are marked with the Obsolete attribute.  I can’t say that I really agree with this.  Marking something Obsolete is supposed to be something for a developer to deal with in source code.  Once an object is serialized to XML, it becomes data.  I think using the Obsolete attribute as both a compiler flag as well as controlling XML serialization is a bad idea. In this post, I’ll show you how I ran into this and how I got around it. The Setup Let’s start with some make-believe code to demonstrate the issue.  We have a simple data class for storing some information.  We use XML serialization to read and write the data: public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); } } Now a few simple lines of code to serialize it to XML: static void Main(string[] args) { var data = new MyData {    FirstName = "Zachary", LastName = "Smith", Age = 50, Hobbies = {"Mischief", "Sabotage"}, }; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof (MyData)); serializer.Serialize(Console.Out, data); Console.ReadKey(); } And this is what we see on the console: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="IBM437"?> <MyData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>   The Change So we decided to track the hobbies as a list of strings.  As always, things change and we have more information we need to store per-hobby.  We create a custom “Hobby” object, add a List<Hobby> to our MyData class and we obsolete the old “Hobbies” list to let developers know they shouldn’t use it going forward: public class Hobby { public string Name { get; set; } public int Frequency { get; set; } public int TimesCaught { get; set; }   public override string ToString() { return this.Name; } } public class MyData { public int Age { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } [Obsolete("Use HobbyData collection instead.")] public List<String> Hobbies { get; set; } public List<Hobby> HobbyData { get; set; }   public MyData() { this.Hobbies = new List<string>(); this.HobbyData = new List<Hobby>(); } } Here’s the kicker: This serialization is done in another application.  The consumers of the XML will be older clients (clients that expect only a “Hobbies” collection) as well as newer clients (that support the new “HobbyData” collection).  This really shouldn’t be a problem – the obsolete attribute is metadata for .NET compilers.  Unfortunately, the XmlSerializer also looks at the compiler attribute to determine what items to serialize/deserialize.  Here’s an example of our problem: static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData) serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if( data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } } If you run the code above, you’ll hit the exception.  Even though the XML contains a “<Hobbies>” node, the obsolete attribute prevents the node from being processed.  This will break old clients that use the new library, but don’t yet access the HobbyData collection. The Fix This fix (in this case), isn’t too painful.  The XmlSerializer exposes events for times when it runs into items (Elements, Attributes, Nodes, etc…) it doesn’t know what to do with.  We can hook in to those events and check and see if we’re getting something that we want to support (like our “Hobbies” node). Here’s a way to read in the old XML data with full support of the new data structure (and keeping the Hobbies collection marked as obsolete): static void Main(string[] args) { var xml = @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""IBM437""?> <MyData xmlns:xsi=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"" xmlns:xsd=""http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema""> <Age>50</Age> <FirstName>Zachary</FirstName> <LastName>Smith</LastName> <Hobbies> <string>Mischief</string> <string>Sabotage</string> </Hobbies> </MyData>"; var serializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(MyData)); serializer.UnknownElement += serializer_UnknownElement; var stream = new StringReader(xml); var data = (MyData)serializer.Deserialize(stream);   if (data.Hobbies.Count != 2) { throw new ApplicationException("Hobbies did not deserialize properly"); } }   static void serializer_UnknownElement(object sender, XmlElementEventArgs e) { if( e.Element.Name != "Hobbies") { return; }   var target = (MyData) e.ObjectBeingDeserialized; foreach(XmlElement hobby in e.Element.ChildNodes) { target.Hobbies.Add(hobby.InnerText); target.HobbyData.Add(new Hobby{Name = hobby.InnerText}); } } As you can see, we hook in to the “UnknownElement” event.  Once we determine it’s our “Hobbies” node, we deserialize it ourselves – as well as populating the new HobbyData collection.  In this case, we have a fairly simple solution to a small change in XML layout.  If you make more extensive changes, it would probably be easier to do some custom serialization to support older data.   I just bought this notebook and I've already installed in a new partition Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 6gb of swap memory. UPDATE2: This is the laptop configuration: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=it&lc=it&dlc=it&tmp_geoLoc=true&docname=c03397517 Sometimes (without any special conditions) Ubuntu freezes. My mouse is blocked, the UI is blocked, ALT+F1 to kill something or to restart is blocked, I can't really do anything... I've also tried and it freezes with: Ubuntu 3D Ubuntu 2D Gnome Shell and it freezes both with low and high load. I can only press on power button (physically) and restart my laptop (and this is not the correct way to do things). I'm using this laptop for work, so I need a stable OS without this freeze. Someone knows how to solve this problem? UPDATE: /var/log/messages is empty /var/log/kernel.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220182/ /var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/1220186/ I just installed propetary driver from ATI, it crash anyway. This morning I started laptop, I enabled wireless, opened dropbox and chrome - freeze. When it freeze I cannot: Do ctrl+alt+f1 to get console access AltF2 + r to reload session Alt+Print + RESUB to restart I totally freezed.

  To configure Weblogic server : 1.- Read the following link : How to Use Log4j with WebLogic Logging Services http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12840_01/wls/docs103/logging/config_logs.html#wp1014610 Here the step by step : 2.- Go to WL_HOME/server/lib and copy wllog4j.jar to the server CLASSPATH, to do this copy the file into DOMAIN_NAME/lib 3.- Download log4j jar (in my case I had not the file) from http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/download.html , in this case the last available version is log4j-1.2.17.jar, and copy the file into DOMAIN_NAME/lib (As step 2). 4.- In this case I activate log4j using WLST (Weblogic Scripting Tool), as bellow : 4.1 .- As you're using windows, execute a terminal window and go to DOMAIN_NAME/bin and run the file setDomainEnv.cmd (this file will set the environment to run java). 4.2 .- Execute the following comands : C:\>java weblogic.WLST wls:/offline> connect('username','password') wls:/mydomain/serverConfig> edit() wls:/mydomain/edit> startEdit() wls:/mydomain/edit !> cd("Servers/$YOUR_SERVER_NAME/Log/$YOUR_SERVER_NAME" wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> cmo.setLog4jLoggingEnabled(true) wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> save() wls:/mydomain/edit/Servers/myserver/Log/myserver !> activate() you can use ls() to list the objects under the WLS directory this will activate log4j to use it with WLS. • Removing 301 redirect from site root

  I'm having a look at a friends website (a fairly old PHP based one) which they've been advised needs re-structuring. The key points being: URLs should be lower case and more "friendly". The root of the domain should be not be re-directed. The first point I'm happy with (and the URLs needed tidying up anyway) and have a draft plan of action, however the second is baffling me as to not only the best way to do it, but also whether it should be done. Introduce maintainance issues as existing users would still have the re-directed page in their cache Following the above, introduce duplicate content Confuse Google/other SE's as to what the homepage actually is now I may be over-analysing this but I have a feeling it's not as simple as removing the 301 from the root, and 301'ing the previous target to the root... Any suggestions (including it's not worth it) are sincerely appreciated.

• Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy in Ubuntu 11.10

  Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

• Why google return soft 404 when I redirect on signup page?

  Since one month, I've got an increased "soft 404" reported by google webmaster tools but work well for users. I made some fix but can't figure out how to solve it. Configuration (maybe useless): I have a website built with rails 3.1 Authentication is handled by the gem Devise Problem: On this page http://en.bemyboat.com/yacht-charter/9965-sailboat-beneteau-oceanis-43 when you click on "Ask a Boat request" (a simple form, in GET to : http://en.bemyboat.com/boat_requests/new/9965) you are redirected with the http status 302 to sign in, and then sent back to the new page if successfully sign in. Google tells me that the link on "ask a boat request" returns a soft 404. I can't make this form in "POST" (which will solve the problem) because we need to automatically redirect user to the good page after sign in. (the Gem Devise memorize the "get" link) To simplify, the question is: how to protect a private page with authentication, reached with a simple "get" and not to be penalized by google with "soft 404". • Calling a .NET C# class from XSLT

  If you've ever worked with XSLT, you'd know that it's pretty limited when it comes to its programming capabilities. Try writing a for loop in XSLT and you'd know what I mean. XSLT is not designed to be a programming language so you should never put too much programming logic in your XSLT. That code can be a pain to write and maintain and so it should be avoided at all costs. Keep your xslt simple and put any complex logic that your xslt transformation requires in a class. Here is how you can create a helper class and call that from your xslt. • How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps. • apt-cacher ng / upgrade fails from client

  I'm running apt-cacher ng on an Ubuntu Hardy server and try to upgrade the packages on a Natty client (which was initially a Maverick). I didn't do anything on the server. On the client I tried two setups. I configure APT to use a http-proxy. On the client I did a "apt-get update" which worked fine, but very slowly. In the acng-report.html I see an entry, which seems to be correct. After verifying Install these packages without verification [y/N]? y "apt-get upgrade" failes with the message: Err http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main libnux-0.9-common all 0.9.48-0ubuntu1.1 503 Name or service not known The GUI update manager fails as well with the message, that untrusted packages will be installed. I edit sources.list and add the server in the correct format to all sources. "apt-get update" is very slowly... and I get a lot of errors like this: W: Failed to fetch http://[::ffff:10.10.10.10]:3142/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/natty/main/binary-i386/Packages 403 Forbidden file type or location After that "apt-get upgrade" says: 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. What could be wrong? Is it possible to use apt-cacher ng on an older system for upgrading newer systems? Thank you in advance!

  I would like to register a .cn domain. I found the below pages which list the officially accredited registrars: -based in China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/05/4635.htm -based outside China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/25/4671.htm Needless to say that the registrars based in China have their website in Chinese which effectively prevents me from using them. There are 11 oversea registrars and I'm wondering which one I should be using.   I am unable to find official wording and I'm hoping that some Rich Snippets/Schema Guru can give me some insight into proper usage of repeated content when it comes to using markup. I'm building a site that wants to use Schema as the markup type and the owner would like as much usage as possible. The business name, telephone and address will appear on every page now is it valid or even useful to use Rich Snippets on every page where this information is displayed. • Shutdown issue on persistent LiveUSB

  A) Downloaded Ubuntu to a Windows 7 temp directory from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (Ubuntu 11.10 - Latest version / 32-bit). The output was a .iso file. B) Created a bootable USB stick using Universal USB Installer: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/. Did not select "Persistent file". Result: Tried it in a Dell Latitude D630 Dell laptop: works every time, many startups and shutdowns. C) Repeated B) but with "Persistent file" set. Works once or twice, but then, just locks on the Ubuntu splash screen. E) Downloaded LiveUSB Install from http://live.learnfree.eu/download, which created a file on Windows 7 called live-usb-install-2.3.2.exe. F) Ran the above installer with "Persistent file" to a 4GB ScanDisk (formatted) thumb drive. Result: Worked pretty good for a while. Shutdown and rebooted several times. Changed items like creating a new directories - all worked. Then: Setup an Admin account with a password and no auto login. On next reboot, it required the password and logged in correctly. Tried to shutdown via the top left icon - Shutdown menu option. Key issue: Would not shutdown, but would always go back to the login prompt. Could successfully login. Finally, shutdown (which just put me back to the login window), and hard shutdown with the power switch. Result: On reboot, just locks on the Ubuntu splash screen. Questions (note, very new to Linux): Did I shutdown wrong (I mean prior to the hard power off)? Is the persistence option very unstable, or am I doing something else completely wrong?

• How do I change pages registering as 404 to 200

  I have this problem. After relaunching my site: http://www.kgstiles.com, traffic dropped immensely(about 60%). After troubleshooting for a week and a half - losing thousands of dollars off of lost traffic in the process, I found that Google was getting a 404 error at the end of many of my 301 redirects(so it wouldn't index the new pages). Most of of the pages, though, would register in my browser. They registered as a 404 error in Google's index as well as a 404checker. So my first question is: could this be what's causing my loss of traffic? and second: how do I fix it? I'm desperate!   I need to create an http url at my laptop to have a Ubuntu installation begin within my laptop on a Xen environment. This is how the final thing will look like http://bderzhavets.wordpress.com/2008/10/28/install-ubuntu-intrepid-server-pv-domu-at-xen-33-port-via-httpgetco-centos-52-dom0/ the host and client are both going to be my laptop, I Google d and came across apt-mirror and some other packages. I do not want to archive entire 15 GB Ubuntu repositories on my machine. It is not possible to use a CD,ISO,loop mounted disk (reason mentioned below). I have tried using netboot image on local machine which failed because if you are attempting to create a virtual machine on a hardware which does not support VT virt-manager installer necessarily needs a URL of this sort http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ any other option to create guest OS is simply grayed out. The unfortunate part is my Ethernet connections do not work when I boot with Xen-4.0 and a pv-ops Dom0 kernel from Jeremy's tree.Which is where I have to do this work.So I have to create a URL structure which is similar to Ubuntu mirrors.So how can I do this in bare minimum so that at least the console boots and once the console comes I can do some work.

• .html extension or no for SEO purposes

  I know this question has been asked before on Stack Overflow, but what I have not been able to find in the posts I've read are concrete references as to WHY one is better than the other (something I can take to my boss). So I'm working on an MVC 3 application that is basically a rewrite of the existing production application (web forms) using MVC. The current site uses a URL rewriter to rewrite "friendly" urls with HTML extensions to their ASPX counterpart. i.e. http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget.html gets rewritten to http://www.site.com/products.aspx?id=18554 We're moving away from this with the MVC site, but the powers that be still want the HTML extension on the URLs. As a developer, that just feels wrong on an MVC site. I've written a quick and dirty HttpModule that will perform a 301 redirect from the .html URL to the same URL without the .html extension and it works fine, but I need to convince management that removing the .html extension is not going to hurt SEO. I'd prefer to have this sort of friendly URL: http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget Can anyone provide information to back up my position or am I actually trying to do something that WOULD hurt SEO, in which case can you provide references on that?
