• NetBeans 6.9 Released

  Great news, the first NetBeans release that has been conducted fully under the stewardship of Oracle has now been released. NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. With support for OSGi and Swing standards, the NetBeans Platform now supports the standard UI toolkit and the standard module system, providing a unique combination of standards for modular, rich-client development. Additional noteworthy features in this release include support for JavaFX SDK 1.3, PHP Zend framework, and Ruby on Rails 3.0; as well as improvements to the Java Editor, Java Debugger, issue tracking, and more. • #altnetseattle in Closing

  So again, the #altnetseattle Conference easily was one of the most useful events of the year for me.  The amount of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that happen in just those two days often outweigh all the presentations I see at other conferences throughout the year.  The reason is simple, they are directed, to the point, and done with the ideal of open spaces.  This makes each session exhaustive on a particular topics.  Throw together some of the smartest people in the field and you have a bang up awesome energy and conversation. I got to talk about cloud computer, a little bit, and REST Architecture as sessions I kicked off myself.  Those were a blast.  I also got to meet a ton of other super talented like minded developers and engineers that are out there kicking the tires of .NET (and other languages/tech stacks like Ruby on Rails). Overall the conference rocked and I will definitely be coming back!  With that, I am headed home to Portland.

• Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions? My company is moving more and more to SharePoint and I feel I need to learn to build application within the SharePoint system. I have some brief introduction to C# but that's about it. I've used some SharePoint Designer and the web interface but not that heavily (most of my "development" so far for SharePoint has been html/css/javascript page manipulation in SPDesigner). What, and in what order should I be learning to eventually develop applications for SharePoint? Also, any good resources for each step?

• Fibonacci Sequence using loop and recur

  I am doing the Project Euler challenge in Clojure and I want to find the sum of all the even numbers in a fibonacci sequence up to a certain number. The code for a function that does this is below. I know there are quicker and easier ways of doing this, I am just experimenting with recursion using loop and recur. However the code doesn't seem to work it never returns an answer. (defn fib-even-sum [upto] (loop [previous 1 nxt 1 sum 0] (if (or (<= upto 1) (>= nxt upto)) sum) (if (= (mod nxt 2) 0) (recur nxt (+ previous nxt) (+ sum nxt)) (recur nxt (+ previous nxt) sum)))) I was not sure if I could do recur twice in the same loop or not. I'm not sure if this is causing the problem?

  I used to develop in Django/Python and Rails/Ruby (and before that C/C++ and C#), and I'm now at a job where we do enterprise Java development (Spring, Hibernate, RESTEasy, Maven, etc.) for web applications and web services. Coming from the Convention over Configuration world, what's the best way to get up to speed doing enterprise Java web services development? I know Java (the language) well, and I've written GUIs in Swing and basic JSP before, but nothing of the kind I'm doing now. Are there any recommended tutorials to get up to speed on popular Java enterprise development tutorials?

• cahoots - zend framework application is not running

  hello everyone, I downloaded cahoots from sourceforge.net. It is a zend framework application. Very nicely done and I must say that it should be a nice tutorial for everyone who is struggling to learn Zend framework. But my problem is that even after reading the instructions this application is still not running. The application just doesn't run at all giving an error message. I have tried my best. no success :( Also I wanted to execute the application as "http://localhost/cahoots" but it runs by this URL "http://localhost/cahoots/public". why is it so.? I am using XAMPP v 1.7.1 with mod-rewrite enabled. Please guide me through the process. Any good tutorials on zend framework with zend tool would be appreciable. I want to learn this framework. Thanks

• Is the .NET/Microsoft technology stack a financially viable option for a startup with limited finances?

  I have an unpaid internship for a very new startup company with little tech experience that's trying to be a Groupon clone. They're currently using Wordpress and I've been trying to decide what web framework to push them towards, since I'll have to learn that language and implement it as well. Is ASP.Net MVC a realistic option for a web based startup company with little financial backing? For example, I know in the Rails hosting is slightly cheaper because of the whole free OS thing and there are free "gems" available to do things like a mailers, but how much more expensive can it get if I go with ASP.Net MVC since such add-ons stop being open source? How much does the cost of hosting for .NET applications add to the equation?

  Hey guys I find it hard to believe that Facebook uses simple sql, surely it would use some other method but lets assume for now it does use sql how would the code assimilating the 'wall' work? Lets say that there is three tables (just for the example) Friends: id (entry key) - uid(your id) - fid (your mates' id) Wall:id (entry key) - username - comment - time - commentcount comments: id (entry key) - wid (wall id (original comment)) - reply - time Lets forget about the like part and report etc, as well as mod things (ip, ban etc.) How would this work? Select wall.id, wall.username, wall.comment, wall.time, wall.commentcount, comments.wid, comments.reply, comments.time FROM wall inner join comments ON wall.id=comments.wid ORDER BY wall.time; That's your own wall but how do they get friend's? A heap of unions?

• Is having your own website important?

  How necessary or important is it? I try to keep a running list of blogs or sites to follow, but a lot of the time I pull up someone's profile and notice there isn't anything there. Is it really important? I understand are different levels of programming (from C/C++ system programmers to Rails and even Haskell and J) and not everyone works in a language easily worked with for web based applications. Not everything is web-centric, however with the advent of many popular and sometimes free services I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a majority of programmers to have a personal site.

• Is this a good use for ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem?

  I have an application that, among other things, imports documents, then emails necessary parties to let them know that a document has been imported. It turns out that determining whom to email, then performing the emailing, is what's taking the longest. I was thinking of doing something like this: var document = ImportDocument(); ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(s => SendEmail(document.Id)); return document; ... similar to DelayedJob in Rails, if that helps. Does that make sense in this context? What would you do?

• My site not directing links correctly.

  I have a site at http://badassmonkeys.com/ and when i click any of the links it does not direct it to the actual page but still pulls up the link. For some reason it works perfectly on linux cpanel and actually loads the pages, but on windows in apache, or in IIS even with a rewrite mod for it, it just doesnt work. The links dont go correctly. Is it a php.ini setting? This is my htaccess file if curious, but it works perfect in linux, but not on windows....   Hi guys, I would like to know if it is possible to re-size and re-position a greybox or shadowbox window to display in a certain div element? I am creating a template for a wordpress site, and I am using the default calendar, but when you click on a date inside of the calendar, the default action is to open it up in a new window. Would it be possible to mod greybox or shadowbox in such a way that when you click on a date, the box opens up over the calendar displaying the contents in it, instead of a new page? Or is there another way of achieving the desired result, maybe with jQuery or Javascript? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance!

  I am interested in developing an online email service (e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, but on a much smaller scale) allowing people to sign up for free email addresses on my domain. The domain in question is already purchased, but I have no idea how to even start. I was hoping to code this using a Ruby framework such as Rails or Sinatra. • Reading a client's header from Python CGI script?

  I'm writing a very simple web service, written in Python and run as CGI on an Apache server. According to Python docs (somewhere... I forgot where), I can use sys.stdin to read the data POSTed by a random client, and this has been working fine. However, I would like to be able to read the HTTP header information as well - incoming IP, user agent, and so on. I'd also like to keep it very simple for now, by using only Python libraries (so no mod-python). How do I do this?

• Recursive function causing a stack overflow

  I am trying to write a simple sieve function to calculate prime numbers in clojure. I've seen this question about writing an efficient sieve function, but I am not to that point yet. Right now I am just trying to write a very simple (and slow) sieve. Here is what I have come up with: (defn sieve [potentials primes] (if-let [p (first potentials)] (recur (filter #(not= (mod % p) 0) potentials) (conj primes p)) primes)) For small ranges it works fine, but causes a stack overflow for large ranges: user=> (sieve (range 2 30) []) [2 3 5 7 11 13 17 19 23 29] user=> (sieve (range 2 15000) []) java.lang.StackOverflowError (NO_SOURCE_FILE:0) I thought that by using recur this would be a non-stack-consuming looping construct? What am I missing?

• Any good web frameworks for asynchronous multiplayer games?

  I'm trying to craft a site for web-based (original) board games, and my client (currently written in Actionscript, but that's highly fungible) works fine - I can play solitaire games in the client - but it has nothing to connect to. What I'm looking for is a server framework for handling accounts/authentication and game tracking: something that would let players log in, show them a list of their current games, let them invite friends to new games, let them make moves in the games they have open, etc. I'm flexible on language; obviously I'm going to have to write a lot of server code to handle the actual game logic, but that should be straightforward enough. I'm more concerned with how to handle the user (and game) DBs, though suggestions for a good server framework for communicating with the DBs (and serving up, most likely, JSON for client communications) are also welcome. Right now my leaning is towards Ruby (probably with Rails) but as far as I can determine it would be a pretty good chunk of effort to set up the necessary databases, so having something even higher-level would be really useful to me.

  I'm a C++ Programmer trying to teach myself Haskell and it's proving to be challenging grasping the basics of using functions as a type of loop. I have a large number, 50!, and I need to add the sum of its digits. It's a relatively easy loop in C++ but I want to learn how to do it in Haskell. I've read some introductory guides and am able to get 50! with sum50fac.hs:: fac 0 = 1 fac n = n * fac n - 1 x = fac 50 main = print x Unfortunately at this point I'm not entirely sure how to approach the problem. Is it possible to write a function that adds (mod) x 10 to a value and then calls the same function again on x / 10 until x / 10 is less than 10? If that's not possible how should I approach this problem? Thanks!

  Hi! If I have one website and I want to rotate its logs, there's one instance of logrotate that is launched. There are as many logrotate instances launched as they are virtual websites. Here you can find mod_log_rotate, with a 1.3 version and (only) 2.0 version: http://www.hexten.net/wiki/index.php/Mod-log-rotate It's 6 years old. Is there something new, or maybe is there something like that in recent Apache versions?   I was trying to solve this problem on SPOJ (http://www.spoj.pl/problems/REC/) F(n) = a*F(n-1) + b where we have to find F(n) Mod (m) where 0 <= a, b, n <= 10^100 1 <= M <= 100000 I am trying to solve it with BigInteger in JAVA but if I run a loop from 0 to n its getting TLE.
