  I'm looking for good, detailed instructions on how to build a DIY NAS (Network Access Storage). I'm planning on doing it cheap (old PC config + open source software). I would like to know: What hardware I need to built one What kind of hard-drive setup I should take (like RAID) Or any other relevant hardware related advices (power supply, motherboard etc...) What software I should run on it, both what OS and software to manage the contents effectively So the NAS is recognizable and accessible to my network I can make sure my Windows computers will recognize it (when using Linux distro's) I can access my files from outside my network I already did a fair bit of searching and found these links, but while these links are great they delve more on the hardware side. • Other games that employ mechanics like the game "Diplomacy"

  I'm doing a little bit of research and I'm hoping you can help me track down any games, other than Diplomacy (online version here), that employ all or some of the mechanics in Diplomacy (rules, short form). Examples I'm looking for: Simultaneous orders given prior to execution of orders In Diplomacy, players "write down" their moves and execute them "at the same time" Support, in terms of supporting an attacker or defender "take" a territory. In Diplomacy, no one unit is stronger than another you need to combine the strength of multiple units to attack other territories. Rules for how move conflicts are resolved Example, 2 units move into a space, but only one is allowed, what happens. I may add to this list later, but these are the primary things I'm looking for. If you need clarification on anything just let me know. Note: I tried asking this on GamingSE, but it was shot down. So, I am unsure where else I could post this. • Why are Linux-based operating systems considered safer than Windows?

  I hear that Linux-based systems are better for security. Apparently they don't have viruses and do not need antivirus software. Even my university claims this - they refuse to have Windows on their servers, which is a real shame because we wanted to use the .NET framework to create some websites. The only reason I can see Linux being safer is because it's open-source, so bugs theoretically would get caught and fixed sooner. I know a bit about how operating systems work, but haven't really delved into how Linux and Windows implement their OS. Can someone explain the difference that makes Linux-based systems more secure?

• Performance-Driven Development

  I was reading a blog yesterday about the evils of SELECT *. The author pointed out that it's almost always a bad idea to use SELECT * for a query, but in the case of SQL Azure (or any cloud database, for that matter) it's especially bad, since you're paying for each transmission that comes down the line. A very good point indeed. This got me to thinking - shouldn't we treat ALL programming that way? In other words, wouldn't it make sense to pretend that we are paying for every chunk of data - a little less for a bit, a lot more for a BLOB or VARCHAR(MAX), that sort of thing? In effect, we really are paying for that. Which led me to the thought of Performance-Driven Development, or the act of programming with the goal of having the fastest code from the very outset. This isn't an original title, since a quick Bing-search shows me a couple of offerings from Forrester and a professional in Israel who already used that title, but the general idea I'm thinking of is assigning a "cost" to each code round-trip, be it network, storage, trip time and other variables, and then rewarding the developers that come up with the fastest code. I wonder what kind of throughput and round-trip times you could get if your developers were paid on a scale of how fast the application performed...   I'm one of the believers that think that we will hit the technological singularity sooner or later. Then the question is if any profession will be unaffected by changes that will come. In the end it will be we programmers that will implement the first self-aware AI. How will technological singularity affect us programmer? What is your professional opinion regarding technological singularity? EDIT: By self-aware I refer to an entity that questions and seek answers, able to analyze and solve problem. Artificial neural network is branch in mathematics/statistics with many widely used algorithms. The algorithms are applied where recognition of data is needed. For example hidden Markov model is used for voice recognition. Another well-known area is business intelligence and data mining. Today algorithms are self-learning. That is a bit of AI what many never think of. Let an ultraintelligent machine be defined as a machine that can far surpass all the intellectual activities of any man however clever. Since the design of machines is one of these intellectual activities, an ultraintelligent machine could design even better machines; there would then unquestionably be an ‘intelligence explosion,’ and the intelligence of man would be left far behind. • Setting properties in chef-client.rb

  I have a use-case where a chef recipe needs to use 'remote_file' to fetch a file on a virtual, and the fetch needs to be do through an HTTP proxy. This is not working because chef-client doesn't use the system proxy settings ... it gets its proxy settings from the /etc/chef/chef-client.rb So how do I get proxy settings (or settings in general) into the chef-client.rb file on a client? Ideally, I'd like it to happen at client bootstrap time, but I can't see how to do that short of hacking the code. The other possibility is that I could create a recipe that updates the chef-client.rb file. But that strikes me as a bit dangerous. And it means that you need to run chef-client twice before it works, assuming that the missing proxy setting in the first run causes the run to ultimately fail. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Is there a Windows 7 add-on that will put the PID in the title bar of a window?

  Occasionally I run many instances of something, like Chrome or Visual Studio. Rarely, but often enough to bug me, one of them gets hosed and starts to consume 100% CPU. I can fire up the task manager to see which process is using 100%, but if it just says chrome.exe or devenv.exe, I don't know which window is the culprit. I'd like to know before terminating the process, so I can activate the app and shut it down cleanly. The best I've found so far is to use Process Explorer's feature where I can right click a process and say "bring to front". But I am curious as to whether there is an app that will put the PID(s) right in the title bar of the window so I can tell which window matches the process. I am using Windows 7 64-bit.

• adding mongo to path

  Bit of a noob question. I have downloaded MongoDb and installed it here /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb In order to start it, I then have to 'cd' into the 'bin' /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb/bin and run ./mongod (to start the database) and ./mongo (to start the mongo shell) The problem is that I can only work with python and ruby scripts using the mongo shell if I have those scripts stored in the same bin directory, and I don't think that's the ideal set up. Will exporting the path allow me to access mongo from outside the bin? For example, I would prefer to have my ruby scripts in /sites/ruby and be able to access mongo by starting ruby in /sites/ruby. If exporting to path is the solution, how do I do that. I'm using a mac

• uWSGI and Nginx python file handling

  I've been trying to figure out how to propertly utilize uWSGI with Nginx and have hit a bit of a design roadblock. I'm trying to figure out how my python files should be accessed via uWSGI. I've been able to find 3 different ways to do so: Create a uWSGI process for each python file and then create locations in nginx that pass to each uWSGI process. Create one instance of uWSGI and create a master python file that handles all the different requests. Create one instance of uWSGI and setup dynamic applications I'm coming from LightTPD where I simply setup rewrites to point at the different python files. I feel like 3 is the closest to that but uWSGI says that it is not the recommended way of going about it.

  I'm reading a book on Windows Internals and there's something I don't understand: "The kernel handles software interrupts either as part of hardware interrupt handling or synchronously when a thread invokes kernel functions related to the software interrupt." So does this mean that software interrupts or exceptions will only be handled under these conditions: a. When the kernel is executing a function from said thread related to the software exception(trap) b. when it is already handling a hardware trap Is my understanding of this correct? The next bit: "In most cases, the kernel installs front-end trap handling functions that perform general trap handling tasks before and after transferring control to other functions that field the trap." I don't quite understand what it means by 'front-end trap handling functions' and 'field the trap'? Can anyone help me?

• Is there a way communicate or measure levels of abstraction?

  I'll be the first to say that this question is a bit... out there. But here are a couple questions I bear in mind : Is abstraction continuous or discrete? Is there a single unit of abstraction? But I'm not sure those questions are truly answerable or even really makes sence. My naive answer would be something along the lines of abitrarily discrete but not necescarily having a single unit measure. Here's what I mean... Take a Black Labrador; an abstraction that could be made is that a Black Lab is a type of animal. [Animal]<--[Black Lab] A Black Lab is also a type of Dog. [Dog]<--[Black Lab] One way to establish a degree of abstraction is by comparing the two the abstractions. We could say that [Animal] is more abstract than [Dog] in respect to a Black Lab. It just so happens [Animal] can also be used as an abstraction of [Dog] So, we might end up with something like [Animal]<--[Dog]<--[Black Lab] With the model above, one might be inclined to say that there's two hops of abstraction to get from [Black Lab] to [Animal]. But you can't exactly tell somebody they need one level abstraction and reasonalby expect they will come up with [Dog] given they aren't explicity given the options above. If I needed to tell someobody in a single email that they needed an abstract class with out knowing what that abstract class is, is there a way to communaticate a degree of abstraction such that they might end up on Dog instead of Animal? As a side note, what area of study might this type of analysis fall under?

  I received this bit of advice about the meta description tag recently: Meta descriptions are used by Google probably 80% of the time for the snippet. They don’t help with rankings but you should probably use them. You could just auto generate them from the first part of the question. The description tag exists in the header, like so: <meta name="Description" content="A brief summary of the content on the page."> I'm not sure why we would need this field, as Google seems perfectly capable of showing the relevant search terms in context in the search result pages, like so (I searched for c# list performance): In other words, where would a meta description summary improve these results? We want the page to show context around the actual search hits, not a random summary we inserted! Google Webmaster Central has this advice: For some sites, like news media sources, generating an accurate and unique description for each page is easy: since each article is hand-written, it takes minimal effort to also add a one-sentence description. For larger database-driven sites, like product aggregators, hand-written descriptions are more difficult. In the latter case, though, programmatic generation of the descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged -- just make sure that your descriptions are not "spammy." Good descriptions are human-readable and diverse, as we talked about in the first point above. The page-specific data we mentioned in the second point is a good candidate for programmatic generation. I'm struggling to think of any scenario when I would want the Google-generated summary, that is, actual context from the page for the search terms, to be replaced by a hard-coded meta description summary of the question itself.

• Is there a test to see if hardware virtualization (vmx / xvm) are presently enabled within a Linux session?

  I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I've still got to go enable the feature in BIOS. Any way to test from within Linux to see that this is no or not? Thanks.

  I would like to allow to delete certain files in /tmp directory to sudo users. I have added the Allow_Cmnd /usr/sbin/userdel for sudo users but this does not delete all /tmp files associated with the user. So how shall I tweak the sudoers to allow them to delete certain files in /tmp directory only. I googled a bit but learned that regex may be be application at this. I tried couple of tweaks but its not working for me. I would like the users to have ability to execute command such as find /tmp -uid 10002 | grep joeuser | xargs rm -rf

• Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

• JavaScript objects and Crockford's The Good Parts

  I've been thinking quite a bit about how to do OOP in JS, especially when it comes to encapsulation and inheritance, recently. According to Crockford, classical is harmful because of new(), and both prototypal and classical are limited because their use of constructor.prototype means you can't use closures for encapsulation. Recently, I've considered the following couple of points about encapsulation: Encapsulation kills performance. It makes you add functions to EACH member object rather than to the prototype, because each object's methods have different closures (each object has different private members). Encapsulation forces the ugly "var that = this" workaround, to get private helper functions to have access to the instance they're attached to. Either that or make sure you call them with privateFunction.apply(this) everytime. Are there workarounds for either of two issues I mentioned? if not, do you still consider encapsulation to be worth it? Sidenote: The functional pattern Crockford describes doesn't even let you add public methods that only touch public members, since it completely forgoes the use of new() and constructor.prototype. Wouldn't a hybrid approach where you use classical inheritance and new(), but also call Super.apply(this, arguments) to initialize private members and privileged methods, be superior?

• Default Window Size

  I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, though I doubt that matters, in this case. So, how do you set the default windows size? Is there a registry tweak for this? Going to Tools->Folder Options...->View Apply to Folders or Reset Folders doesn't work. So, whenever I open a new window to a random new folder I haven't opened before, I don't want it to take 75% of the screen. Is there any way I could make it open smaller?

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Multi-Tenant VMWare View Deployment

  We have VMWare View 5 set up for a single tenant environment, absolutely brilliant and works perfectly. Two thumbs up there! We're looking at the possibility of deploying this in a multi tenant scenario, where multiple unlinked companies connect to a VDI solution hosted by us but have no visibility of each other. Obviously;y this could be achieved by doubling up on all the components, having a complete VMWare View stack for each tenant, but this seems a little bit messy. Has anyone done this before, and if so how? Googling sheds little light apart from this experts exchange topic.

• When to move into a CRM system?

  I have a client that is currently managing around 5000+ contacts via Outlook. There is also a BES Express installation in place. There are a couple problems. First, there is a corrupt contact in there somewhere that is preventing either a cabled or over the air sync of the complete list to a blackberry. The second, is that it just seems to be getting a bit unruly. They currently have a license for ACT, which I'm trying to get them to move into, but at what number does the contact list need to be at to migrate away from using Outlook/Exchange and into a real CRM solution?

• GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

• Why does my audio keep reverting to stereo?

  I have an ASUS P7P55D LE motherboard with onboard sound and I am running Windows 7 64-bit, and I am using the SPDIF output from my motherboard to my receiver. On my receiver I can see which audio channels are in use (i.e. stereo or 5.1) In the audio interface properties I can test DTS Audio and Dolby Digital outputs and both work fine, but when I try to play a game with 5.1 sound (I've tried Left 4 Dead and Dragon Age Origins) it reverts to stereo. I was getting this behaviour with the default Microsoft drivers so I installed the latest from the ASUS website but there is no difference. I notice that in the Advanced tab the Default Format only allows me to choose from various 2 channel formats so maybe that is something to do with it? How can I get 5.1 output all of the time?
