  • Basic multicast network performance problems

    I've been using mpong from 29west's mtools package to get some basic idea of multicast latency across various Cisco switches: 1Gb 2960G, 10Gb 4900M and 10Gb Nexus N5548P. The 1Gb is just for comparison. I have the following results for ~400 runs of mpong on each switch (sending 65536 "ping"-like messages to a receiver which then sends back -- all over multicast). Numbers are latencies measured in microseconds. Switch Average StdDev Min Max 2960 (1Gb) 109.68463 0.092816 109.4328 109.9464 4900M (10Gb) 705.52359 1.607976 703.7693 722.1514 NX 5548(10Gb) 58.563774 0.328242 57.77603 59.32207 The result for 4900M is very surprising. I've tried unicast ping and I see the 4900 has ~10us higher latency than the N5548P (average 73us vs 64us). Iperf (with no attempt to tune it) shows both 10Gb switches give me 9.4Gbps line speed. The two machines are connected to the same switch and we're not doing any multicast routing. OS is RHEL 6. 10Gb NICs are HP 10GbE PCI-E G2 Dual-port NICs (I believe they are rebranded Mellanox cards). The 4900 switch is used in a project with tight access control so I'm waiting for approval before I can access it and check the config. The other two I have full access to configure. I've looked at the Cisco document[2] detailing differences between NX-OS and IOS w.r.t multicast so I've got some ideas to try out but this isn't an area where I have much expertise.   • How to boot linux direct to application on console with no login

    I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc. The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

Somewhere else in my code, a security check is applied which mean I need to disable said event, but I do not have access to the normal -= syntax to remove it.   • USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting in windows and linux

    I have a problem similar to what is described at "Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often?" except is is happening in both Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu 12/04TLS, fully patched), multiple mice, multiple OSs. It stops responding to input for about 3-5 seconds, then starts responding again. It's more frequent and lasts longer when running games (TF2, L4D, Dishonored, Borderlands 2, and more), but happens when just running the OS as well. I was hoping it was the motherboard so I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card to try that, but it's still happening. I've stripped it down to just the keyboard and mouse (different keyboard too just in case the keyboard was the problem), but it's still happening. All the hardware (mice and keyboards) work fine on other computers. I have literally pulled the mouse and keyboard out and plugged them into another computer (laptop) and re-joined the online game and had no problem with the keyboard and mouse combo that just failed on my gaming rig. Please no driver / Windows or Linux only suggestions, as that wouldn't effect both OSs. edit: known good mice I've brought home are now going bad. I suspect the hardware is messed up (voltage?) and has been frying the mice.

    In my code I'm attempting to use a transaction using TransactionScope with Entity Framework. While in this transaction we are opening a regular SQL connection to a seperate server and database. When the conn.Open() is called we get an Error: "Network access for Distributed Transaction Manager (MSDTC) has been disabled. Please enable DTC for network access in the security configuration for MSDTC using the Componet Services Administrative tool." However, MSDTC is enabled and running on the Server.

    First some background information on the server: Host OS: Debian Linux Squeeze + qemu-kvm version 1.0+dfsg-8~bpo60+1 Guest OS: Debian Linux Squeeze I use qemu-kvm via libvirt. I have set up 9p VirtFS with the following in Guest's XML config: <filesystem type='mount' accessmode='passthrough'> <source dir='/srv/www'/> <target dir='wwwdata'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x06' function='0x0'/> </filesystem> That is, I want to share /srv/www to the guest OS using mount tag wwwdata. When I try to mount the VirtFS share from the guest, I get an error message: root@server:~# mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L2 wwwdata /srv/www/ mount: wwwdata: can't read superblock I also tried virtfs target dir/mount_tag www at first. I got the same error message. However, I was able to mount the VirtFS share using mount tag www1111, or www1 or similar. Some more notes on this one. dmesg doesn't show anything useful either in guest or the host. The only sign is this entry in the guest dmesg: [ 36.054936] Installing v9fs 9p2000 file system support Does anyone know how to get this working correctly? Google gives no useful information on this issue; I've tried several searches.

    I'm implementing a custom membership provider, and everything seems to go swimmingly until I create a MembershipUser object. At that point, I receive the error: The membership provider name specified is invalid.   • Using OpenID as the only authentication method

    I have read the other questions and they mostly talk about the security of doing so. That's not entirely my concern, mostly because the website is question is a browser-based game. However, the larger issue is the user - not every user is literate enough to understand OpenID. Sure RPX makes this pretty easy, which is what I'll use, but what if the user does not have an account at Google or Facebook or whatever, or does not trust the system to log in with an existing account? They'd have to get an account at another provide - I'm sure most will know how to do it, let alone be bothered to do it. There is also the problem of how to manage it in the application. A user might want to use multiple identities with a single account, so it's not as simple as username + password to deal with. How do I store the OpenID identities of a user in the database? Using OpenID gives me a benefit too: RPX can provide extensive profile information, so I can just prefill the profile form and ask the user to edit as required. (I'm not sure if the tables above are right) What measures do I need to take in order to prevent someone from logging in as another user and happily doing anything with their account? (as I understand RPX sends the identifier via HTTP, so what anyone would have to do is to just somehow grab it then enter it in the "OpenID" field) What else do I need to be aware of when using OpenID?

    After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow).     I get a blue screen of death in my windows 98 machine every time I boot it. I can't reach to my desktop. The error is like this: A fatal exception 0E occured at 0028:C003CC2F in VxD IOS(01) + 0000156B This was called from 0028:C0082E60 in VxD VKD(01) + 000001D0 I have to then give it a three finger salute to restart the system. There is no other way to shut down the system at this point except pressing the CPU power button. What could be the problem?     Hi, I am trying to talk to a SOAP web service using SUDS and Python. After lots of messing around learning Python (yes I am new to this) and working out how to use SUDS I have come across a problem. The signature of the web method I am calling, according to suds, is (FWTCaseCreate){ ClassificationEventCode = None Priority = None Title = None Description = None Queue = None DueDate = None AssociatedObject = (FWTObjectBriefDetails){ ObjectID = (FWTObjectID){ ObjectType = None ObjectReference[] = <empty> } ObjectDescription = None Details = None Category = None } Form = (FWTCaseForm){ FormField[] = <empty> FormName = None FormKey = None } Internal = None InteractionID = None XCoord = None YCoord = None } So I use SUDS to create the classes that I want and send it to the method. However I get an error. So I turned logging on and I can see that the XML that is being sent is not correct which is causing a deserialize error.     I've just bought a second monitor for my PC which happens to be a pivot monitor. I've already read lots of forums related to my problem but haven't come across a solution - I have the same symptoms as dozens of posts but no matter whatever I try it just doesn't work. I've already changed the xorg.conf file and added in the device section just under Driver "nvidia" the following for my second monitor: Option "RandRRotation" "on" When I save and reboot I try to rotate my screen with the nvidia X server settings by choosing the second monitor and clicking either "left" or "right" for the rotation. It immediately exits the nvidia settings window and does nothing. I tried within the terminal by typing: xrandr -o right I get the following error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I actually manage to rotate it with Option "Rotate" "CCW" instead of "RandRRotation". The problem with this solution is that you get the second monitor in the right position, but any window you open on that screen is practically unchangeable. You can't change the size nor move it, making it useless for reading PDFs, which is the main reason why I bought this second screen to help me write my thesis.   • Can I use OAuth for a SOAP web service?

    The standard HTTP Authentication for SOAP passed the password etc in cleartext,and I'm looking for an alternative, possibly a key based mechanism to authenticate web services in lieu of the password. OAuth is gaining a lot of popularity; would it be appropriate, and how would I implement it? Or perhaps there are other methods I should use. The project itself is relatively simple, with just a one or two methods to be exposed, but security is of the utmost importance.

    Hey guys, First of all, i have read the "millions" of post on this site and some blogs/forum post on other websites, and no answer is solving my problem. I'm my app, there's a possibility to import a txt or csv file with data. In the case of the error, the file contains 444 rows (file is 14,5 kB). When i try to send it to the server to process it, i get an QuotaExceedException, telling me to increase MaxReceivedMessageSize. So i changed it to a much higher value, but i'm still getting the same exception. I'm using the same exact items for client and server in system.servicemodel in my config file.   • Media Center - TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second

    I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro and there is no skipping/pausing. I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing it okay before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.
