  • Sound Recording Application that Starts/Stops Automatically

    I'm looking for a sound/voice recording application that I would just let run on my PC all the time. It would either start/stop based on whether there is "anything worth recording" or maybe just record constantly but discard silent segments. EDIT If you have OS specific suggestions, Windows would need to be supported. Of course, if your solution only works on other OSes I'd like to hear about them anyway.

  • Put a task to the background with bash

    Hey guy, I know that you can start a background job with Bash doing foo &. However, the best way I know to put a foreground job to the background is to do Ctrl+z to pause it then bg 1 to resume it in the background. Is there a faster way? Some Ctrl+Something key combination I'm not aware of? Thanks!

  • TomCat starts, but does not load properly

    Hey guys, I've been working on this for a day now and still don't know what's wrong. I am essentially building a second environment for our web and app server. I got apache to load up just fine, but tomcat is proving to be difficult. It appears to start and load just fine, but when it comes to loading our application, its just got stuck for 2-5 minutes and then shut down.     Im using Linux Mint 13. Wireless has always worked fine but stopped yesterday after I connected to the internet via an ethernet cable.   • Mapped drives not showing in first run of Windows Explorer

    We have a couple of users whose mapped drives don't always appear in Windows Explorer when they initially log in. "net use" shows the drives are mapped correctly and they can see them in File Open dialogs in other applications. However they don't appear in Windows Explorer. The current workaround we have is to kill Windows Explorer and then immediately start it again, then they do reliably appear. Any ideas?

  • Screen is greyed out after power failure shutdown: Mac OSX

    When the battery power is down and the unit not plugged in the computer is forced into a sleep mode requiring pushing the start button when power is re-connected. The initial desktop screen appears to be greyed out and is unresponsive with a timer bar which, when the timing sequence is complete restores an active desktop. I can't find any reference to this phenomenon in the OSX literature I have. Any pointers to where I can get more information? Perhaps I am using the wrong search criteria?

  • Can I get Linux into 'Party/Kiosk-Mode' like status?

    I want to create a linux user account (in ubuntu or debian or whatever release is more suitable for this) which cannot do anything but just view a pre-determined web page. Kind of Kiosk style so that the user can observe what is going on from that web page but; cannot execute or write (and this blocking is preferably made also via GUI i.e. user cant minimize or close the browser, cant view any -start menus- )anything on machine. How can I do this?

  • Tomcat can't talk to MySql after outage

    I missed a payment for my server and hey suspended my account for a day or so. When they brought the server back up all my data was in tact but for some reason Tomcat can't make a JDBC connection to my MySql server. They both run on the same machine and hence I have a bind address of 127.0.0.1. It's strange because I have reset the machine of my own accord before without issue but clearly something has been reset in the downtime. I followed this guide (Just the bits which don't concern S3, I am not on Amazon infrastructure) originally and everything worked as expected. I'm very new to being a SysAdmin and I'm not sure what to try, how would you go about diagnosing this issue?   • installing windows XP in Samsung SENS 145 plus notebook (no CD drive)

    Hi I was trying to install Windows XP in a Samsung SENS 145 plus Notebook. It does not have a cd drive and I already managed to format it and semi install Windows XP, so now it does not even boot up either. This is what I did: Since it supports USB booting, I first made a bootable USB of Windows XP (Korean version; SP2 I think, may be SP 3) using Novicorp WinToFlash enter link description here. It managed to boot up at first and I was able to format the C driveand get Windows install to start up. It took forever to copy all the files from the USB and after the first reboot, before installation started, I cancelled the reboot from windows install, went to BIOS and changed the boot device priority from USB to internal hard drive. But now on bootup it showed me a list with two options for booting windows XP (much like in the case of a multi OS system) so I assumed that I had formatted drive D by mistake and installed XP there, instead of on C drive. Anyway, I chose one of them and it continued my Windows installation. I got the blue installation screen that shows ads about Windows XP on the right frame and estimated remaining time on the left. However, after completing the process, after the first reboot, instead of showing the Windows XP logo, it says \system32\hall.dll is missing (or corrupted I'm not sure, I needed to install the Korean version of windows and I could not exactly read the error message, however it was one that I have already seen in an English version installation, and I am sure it says either missing or corrupted). The problem is, now it shows the same error again when I try to reboot it from the USB drive as well. I tried to boot a portable version of Linux I made in another USB, but the computer does not boot up from that USB, and it shows hal.dll error when I try to boot it using the WIN XP installation USB I made, as well as when I try to boot it from the hard drive, where I suppose Win XP is now semiinstalled. So now I can't get the computer to start up at all, except going to the BIOS. What else can I try to solve this? Also, would it be possible to install XP on this computer by connecting it to another one running Windows 7 ultimate, through the ethernet card? That is, network just the two computers together, then install windows XP on the notebook from the desktop running windows 7? Please help, I'm running out of ideas on this one. If Korean version of windows XP is the problem then I am willing to install English version as well. (but I need to make sure if that is the real cause of the problem)

  • 403 Forbidden Error when trying to view localhost on Apache

    I think my Apache must be all screwed up. I don't know if it ever worked. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and the first step on this tutorial is to start apache and check that it's working by opening http://localhost. It starts fine but when I go to localhost I get a 403 forbidden error. I don't know where to start figuring out how to fix it, so I wonder if a fresh install of Apache would do the trick. What do you think? Update: I found some error logs in /private/var/log/apache2/. Found this in one of the logs. After removing the old virtual hosts, adding my new localhost virtual host, and restarting apache, it seems to work. So I guess whenever I want to add a virtual host, I only need to add them to this file? Or is there a hosts file somewhere, like there is on Linux? Update: Yes, there is an /etc/hosts file that need to be changed to. Add the virtual host name to that file.

My problem is that I can't get Yaws to run while running on either port 8000 or port 80. Running sudo iptables -L gives this output: Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT tcp -- ip-192-168-2-0.ec2.internal ip-192-168-2-16.ec2.internal tcp dpt:http ACCEPT tcp -- 0.0.0.0 anywhere tcp dpt:http ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:http ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:http Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination In addition, I've gone to the security group panel in the Amazon AWS configuration area, and add ports 80, 8000, and 8080 to ip source 0.0.0.0 Please note: if you try to access the URL of the virtual server now, it likely won't connect because I'm not running currently running the yaws daemon.   • Looking for a SECURE Audio Player for Windows

    I know there are dozens of audio players for windows, but which one has: the best security record (least reported vulnerabilities) the least number of security exploits the best security implementation, along with the reasoning behind the implementaiton (i.e. how it is handled). As Windows users start to see more and more reports of media-based attacks against Windows Media Player (& co.) it would be useful to have a player that has some proactive security approaches to handling exploits.

  • What Boxee apps do you recommend?

    I've recently repurposed an old machine that I had laying around (custom built several years ago with miscellaneous parts) as a simple media center with an Ubuntu 8.10 operating system and Boxee as its front end, and I absolutely love it. I'm particularly intrigued by the custom applications that are possible, and I wanted to start a running list of recommended apps for it.
