    Hello, I bought a almost no-name netbook (chiligreen netbook neo), and I'm trying to have OSX86 working on it. No problem with the installation, but to activate wifi one must use Fn+F3. Of course it works with Windows, but neither in OSX or Ubuntu... Any idea ? A manual way to do something like http://greg.geekmind.org/eee-control/ ?

  • How to kill a single request in IIS?

    I'm using IISPeek and can see that there's a single request that's hanging on a buggy page. I've fixed the bug so that others who open the page won't experience the problem, but the page is still active after almost an hour. I'd rather not stop the whole application as there are some important processes currently running. Via IISPeek I have the request number (9f0002008001238e) and clientIP. Could any of that be used to stop the ongoing request?

  • NFS automounts hang

    Hi, I have been mounting NFS shares on my x86 Ubuntu with NIS/am-utils fine for a long time, but today my system got into a state where it could no longer access automounted directories and instead frequently got hung up trying to access them, returning either "Input/output error" or "Permission denied" (almost randomly), as well as "stale file handle." I can, however, manually mount that share fine. Restarting am-utils doesn't help get my system out of its funk; is there any other way of getting my system un-stuck?

    Übergizmo is reporting an issue with the new Macbook Pros' GeForce 330M GPU being always "on" under Windows 7, and thus almost halving the battery life compared to that with OS X (which is able to somehow suspend that GPU and use the the low-end integrated GPU to do the light work). Any solutions, or rumors of coming solutions?

  • Compressing with RAR vs ZIP

    A lot of people are compressing files with RAR, sending compressed files with RAR and so on. ZIP is more standard and works on all platforms. Windows users have ZIP included and linux users have no trouble with that file format. The tests I did sometime ago showed me that RAR compress better (some KyloBytes, no more) but not enough to use a non-free software when ZIP works on almost all the computers for free. Why do some people use RAR rather than ZIP for compressing?

  • 2Wire USB Network Adapter Not Working With Windows 7

    I installed Windows 7 on a separate drive, and everything works fine, but I can't get the above network adapter to work properly. It's displayed in Device Manager as a USB device, and I have the driver that makes it function in Vista, but when I run the Driver Wizard and direct it to directory where I have the Vista driver, it almost immediately says "Can't install driver." Is there any work around to this?

  • Core i7 on linux loses its multithreading capability after suspend

    On my debian-linux system, with a core i7 920 , each time I resume after the command "pm-suspend" (suspend to RAM), mutlithreading capabilities almost disappear. More specifically, two distinct programs can use 2 distinct cores at full rate, but a single program is limited to only one core (for one instance of a multithreaded program as well as multiple instances of a monothreaded program, e.g. "make -j 4" for gcc). So I end up rebooting the system. Any help appreciated!

  • OpenVPN, Great on Windows, VERY slow on Mac...

    Hello, I'm not really an IT Pro, but this seemed like the best place to ask this question... I have setup VPN networks in the past, for fun, and everything was great, but now I've set one up for my boss, and while my computers all work great, his Mac machines are almost too slow to work with. Its pretty much vanilla configs all around, anyone have any ideas? Its a TUN routing setup over UDP. Back Story: My boss travels a lot, and wants to be able to access all his files from the road, and is also pretty paranoid about security (even though knows almost nothing about computers). SO i figured a VPN would be the answer. I went with OpenVPN, but there are some other issues. The only ISP we can get in our area besides Dial-UP is a crappy Satellite provider, that doesn't offer public IPs unless your willing to pay, so while the computers and VPN setup are pretty vanilla, the routing and structure is strange to get around this limitation. Specs: Its OpenVPN2, and there are six machines using it (only three actually use it, the rest are my test machines), one Windows 7 laptop, two XP Desktops, one OS X 10.5 Desktop, one 10.6 Desktop, and one 10.6 Laptop. One XP Desktop sits at my house and acts as the server (6Mbs/2Mbs FIOS connection). One XP desktop sits at the office and hosts a webpage that will wake up the Main Mac Desktop from sleep, and also ping all the machines on the VPN and show their status. The main office mac (10.6) stays in sleep mode until it gets the Wake-On-Lan packet from the Office XP, and then it auto connects to the VPN and opens itself up. The reason for all this is the Satellite private IP crap means i cant directly access the office machines outside of the LAN, so everyone connects to my house first, then they talk to each other from there. The Wake On Lan weirdness is because my boss doesn't want to leave the main Mac on all the time, and making a quick and dirty webpage was the easiest way to send a Magic Packet from inside the LAN without confusing my boss. The VPN uses Client Config files to make static IPs for the client. The only thing i found in google was some changes to the VPN MTU settings (down to 1400) but no real help. Oh, and i forgot...all the windows machines just have OpenVPN start as a service. The Mac laptop uses tunnelblick (an OpenVPN GUI) and the Mac Desktops use OpenVPN in normal command line mode.   • chroot on OSX as a different OS

    I was wondering if anyone has been able to use chroot on OSX to run another OS (ubuntu, centos). I know that they are very different, but almost everything I want to use this for wouldn't care about anything at the level of the kernel, so was hoping there would be a way to do this without using a VM. Based off my google searches, I see this question is asked, but no real answer other than "try a VM". Would really like to do this without a VM though.

    Setup Windows 7 64-bit host OS running VirtualBox 4.2, with Ubuntu 12.04 guest OS. OpenSSH server is installed and running (ssh -v localhost connects locally in the guest machine). Can SSH to external servers (no outbound Windows firewall rule blocking port 22) Can ping the IP of the guest (192.168.56.101) Problem Using PuTTY to SSH to the IP of the guest OS (192.168.56.101), PuTTY returns almost immediately with Network error: connection refused How can I diagnose & resolve this issue?

  • is there anyway to know if your supposedly fully dedicated server is really a virtually resource-sha

    Hi, sometimes I feel my server not responding as smoothly as I would expect (i have a Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz Quad Core), given that for example, the 'top' commands reports a low load < 0.5, CPU are almost completely idle ... I maybe have internet connectivity issues, so I don't really know if it's me or if it's the server itself. Is there anykind of benchmarking script (or something analogous) I could run and see the actual performance of the server ?

  • NTPD issue - syncs then slowly loses ground

    RHEL 5 workstation. Has been running smoothly for years. I did a 'pup' recently and followed with a nice, cleansing reboot. Afterwards the system had some startup issues: namely MySQL refused to start. It just went "...." for 5-10 minutes before I did another boot and skipped that step (using 'interactive'). This was the only service that didn't wan't to start normally. So now that the system is booted I've found that it doesn't want to stay in sync with the NTP master and after 48 hours is refusing any SSH other than root. NTPD: this service starts normally and gets a lock on 4 servers. Almost immediately it starts to lose ground and now (after 3 days) is almost 40 hours behind. If I stop/start the service it gets the lock, resets the system clock and starts losing ground again. The 'hwclock' is set properly and maintains its time. Login: when I (re)start the ntp server I am able to login normally. I assume this problem is due to losing sync with LDAP. This appears to be verified by LDAP errors in /var/log/messages. Suggestions on where to look? ADDENDA: Tried deleting the 'drift' file. The more devices you add to your home office, the more disastrous the situation under the table becomes: cords falling behind the desk, ugly cables running along the sides and under of the desk, making it almost impossible to clean and remove the dust.   • How do I remove the numerous Genius Playlists from my iPad?

    I’m using the Music app on my iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.1. For some reason, over time my iPad’s Playlists have been populated with more and more Genius Playlists making it extremely sluggish and almost impossible to access my own playlists. As of right now there are 16 copies for an “Adult Contemporary Rock Mix”. Multiple copies exist for a large number of genres. How do I get these off my iPad so I can get to the playlists I actually care about?
