  • Best tool to recover removed files

    Using Ubuntu 10.10, I have a startup script that automatically removes my 'working directory'. This is a simple folder on my Desktop where I place a bunch of files that I use throughout the day. These are temporary files I need to store just for that one session. In order to keep things clean, my startup script does: rm -rf /home/user/Desktop/workdir mkdir /home/user/Desktop/workdir Works great. Till the moment I had some important files there and forgot to move them before shutting down. A few (2-3) sessions ago this happened and I now realize I need to recover the "workdir" directory. But several new ones have been created and removed in the meantime. What is the best way to recover this - if possible? I read about tools like scalpel but it seems they will scan my whole HD. I know the name of the folder and would like to just look for this workdir folder. What is best?

  • Need a graphical renaming tool which can rename files recursively

    ATM I am forced to use freeware in Windows to rename SOME Linux data files. Linux also creates files like "Filename.ext" as being different to "filename.ext", and !@#$hg".ext ... which cannot be recognized by Windows. "pyrenamer" ... mentioned in another answer cannot auto-rename more than the one immediate folder. I use Ubuntu, not ARCH linux, because I am not CLI. Despite some answers here (designed by and for CLI programmers), how can Ubuntu GUI (not CLI) do file renaming? BTY: in ONE folder only, THUNAR is far better than silly pyrenamer. But Thunar cannot auto-rename recursively.

  • A new tool in beta: Conflict Alert

    You know that manual merges are a real pain? Well, I’ve just released a Visual Studio extension that makes manual merges a thing of the past. No source control system can automatically merge two edits to the same line of code. Conflict Alert solves this by warning you that you are heading down a path that will cause a manual merge later down the line. You choose whether you want to carry on, or talk to your teammate and find out what they are doing. Have you ever warned your teammates that you are doing a big refactor, and that they should ‘keep out of class X’? Conflict Alert tells them for you automatically by highlighting the sections of code that you have edited.   It doesn’t need to connect to your source control system, so it works no matter which you use.   • Generic tool to configure startup applications on Unix

    Is there an automated deployment tool that manages startup applications on a variety of machines, especially the Unices? Or is the only hope to study the nuts and bolts of each Unix (osx, linux, solaris, hpux, aix) on how to configure applications to launch on system startup? I want to run them as a specific user, instead of root. At the moment, I run them all within a screen session .. which is a hassle, as this requires manual intervention every time the machine is rebooted for some reason. Ideally, I am looking for a tool that would read, say, ~/.startup-programs which file contains, on each line, the command line to launch the needed daemons. And this tool should work on OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX and AIX ... writing the appropriate startup scripts for each platform.

  • That Tool is cURLy

    When you just use IE, Firefox or Chrome it can be easy to forget that HTTP is about more then just going to check the latest tech news at Engadget. It is a full and rich protocol, and a great way to experience that richness is the powerful command line utility cURL. cURL has a lot of options, but the syntax starts out simple. You can retrieve the contents of a web page with a simple curl http://blogs.claritycon.com/. The results should be the full text of the web page, tags and all. From there, you can use X to specify the HTTP verb to use, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH, etc and d to specify the payload of a POST or PUT. I have found cURL to be incredibly useful for two scenarios. First, as a good way to test basic web services. Second, while working a bit with CouchDB and another document based database, cURL has helped me learn more about RESTful APIs, including different verbs and response codes. cURL is a mainstay in our environments and programming languages precisely because it is simple, powerful and discoverable. I encourage more .NET developers to take a look, bask on the command line for a while and enjoy the plain text of the web.   • Track sales and commission with third-party tool

    I have a clothing website where I link to various clothing retailers. I have reached an agreement with one of the retailers whereby they will pay a commission to us for every sale they make from traffic that was referred by our site. I need a mechanism for tracking how much commission should be paid to us, that involves as little work as possible to implement from their side. We both have Google Analytics. Option 1: They record a goal in their GA account whenever someone makes a purchase on their site. They see how many completed goals are marked as referral traffic from our site and calculate commission accordingly. The problem with this is that the whole process of calculating and paying commission will be manual. They will need to frequently check how many sales were generated by referral traffic from our site, and probably we will have to chase them for commission payments. Also - since we won't have access to their GA data - we will need to trust that they report all sales accurately. Option 2: Sign them up to an affiliate network like Commission Junction or Google's Affiliate Network, and connect to them through this network. The problem with this solution is that it seems too heavyweight; ideally we don't want to ask a retailer to go through the whole sign up process just to deal with us and pay us commission. I am assuming that there must be some lightweight service that tracks the number of sales by one site and pays commission accordingly to the other site, where the sign up and installation procedure is simple and fast.

    Hi, Is it possible to split a large file into smaller files on Windows 2003 using a tool provided/supported/sanctioned by Microsoft? I see that there are a lot of freeware tools (various zip tools) for this task, but I need to move files off of a production server, thus would like to avoid tools I don't know if I can trust. I would much prefer some tool included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools or something along those lines. Does such a tool exist? Thank you.

  • tool for advanced ID3 tags handling and audio files ordering

    I have following problem – some of my files do not have complete ID3 tags and some have typos or small differences in writing - so finally, my portable player sees “Mr. President” as different artist from “Mr President” and so on. I would need some tool which could search similar tags and then allow me to correct the typos or for example override “artist” in all selected files by manually entered text. The same with empty tag items – sometimes, the track name, album etc. is OK, but artist is missing etc. Without touching the audio quality, of course (but this should be no problem, I think). I already tried tools in Winamp, Songbird and other players and currently most advanced free tool I tried is Tagscanner. However, it is not able to to solve the problem with similar tags. Do you know such tool? Preferably free and for Windows, if possible. However, if you know some commercial app able to do this, please let me know.

  • winrar command line folder stucture

    I am trying to zip up a folder.. Example: C:\Test*.* C:\Test\bin*.* I want to be able to zip up the Test folder with bin subfolder, however, I need the Test folder contents in the zip root. I am trying to do this using the WinRar command line (rar.exe) I've tried using rar.exe a "C:\File.zip" -ep "C:\Test" but it puts all the folder contents in root... Tried rar.exe a "C:\File.zip" -ep "C:\Test*.*" "C:\Test\bin" same thing.. any ideas?

  • Graphical disk surface check tool?

    I need a program that can scan my hard drive for read and write errors so I can partition around them. I REALLY don't do well with numbers but if I can have something that shows an output like the graphical display on gparted that would be perfect. I know a lot of people would recommend replacing the disk but right now I can't as I NEED this laptop for school and can't wait for a hard drive to arrive (I have ordered one, yes, but I don't expect it to arrive for another couple weeks as I only figured out afterwards they still have to manufacture it)

I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective.
