    What free antivirus solutions would you recommend? What are the limitations? What are the dangers of using free versions as opposed to paid solutions? E.g. are they less reliable? As mentioned by Tony, most of the free solutions are limited to personal use so the question will mainly focus on solutions for personal use. See if your antivirus of choice is already listed. Chances are it is. If you spot an answer that mentions one you already use, vote that up if you think it's a good solution. If you know of a feature or drawback not listed, or can include experiences in dealing with it, please edit the answer accordingly.     I have following problem – some of my files do not have complete ID3 tags and some have typos or small differences in writing - so finally, my portable player sees “Mr. President” as different artist from “Mr President” and so on. I would need some tool which could search similar tags and then allow me to correct the typos or for example override “artist” in all selected files by manually entered text. The same with empty tag items – sometimes, the track name, album etc. is OK, but artist is missing etc. Without touching the audio quality, of course (but this should be no problem, I think). I already tried tools in Winamp, Songbird and other players and currently most advanced free tool I tried is Tagscanner. However, it is not able to to solve the problem with similar tags. Do you know such tool? Preferably free and for Windows, if possible. However, if you know some commercial app able to do this, please let me know.

While it seems pretty easy to find motivated developpers to join for free an open-source project, it seems quite hard to find a single free graphic designer. What free and good resources do you usually use for your programs/websites ? Do you have any cool tip that you're willing to share ?   • Reliable cheap or free DNS service?

    I'm looking for a reliable free or cheap DNS service. I've used FreeDNS at FreeDNS.Afraid.org in the past, but it doesn't always seem reliable... sometimes people say they can't access my website (sometimes I can't access it either) by domain name, and yet if I type in the IP address it works fine, so I assume it's some sort of DNS problem. Are there any other cheap or free DNS services out there? I need something reliable that I can manage via a web interface (or scripts if they have an API) that I can use to manage the DNS for ~100 domain names. EDIT: To be clear, I'm looking for DNS hosting, not DNS servers to use for my WAN connection.

    Hi, I need to merge several MP3 tracks into one, I use Mac OS X 10.5. I want to convert all my Harry Potter CDs to my iPod, but not every minute a new track (as it is on the CDs) but chapterwise. Where can I get a free software? Help, please! (I've already tried: Jfuse, but after I had merged a few chapters it said I had to buy it; emicsoft VOB Converter for Mac; File Stitcher; but since they all were shareware, for free they would only let me merge 2 files at once (that would take me days) or half of each file which is useless of course; iTunes advanced settings ("join CD tracks") when importing the CDs, but it would let me only join the complete CD, not chapters...) (Sorry for my English, hope you could understand what I wanted to say)

  • My server is running out of memory, despite having all swap free

    I am using Debian 6 (Squeeze). The server has 4gb of memory in it, and 8gb of swap. I'm starting to get memory alloc errors at high application load times, but from top command: Mem: 4055944k total, 3915436k used, 140508k free, 10444k buffers Swap: 7999480k total, 0k used, 7999480k free, 3604496k cached The system isn't even trying to use the swap? Why would this be happening? I would like to upgrade the primary memory, but this isn't possible just right now. Thanks.

    Hi there I'm using Pinnacle Studio 12 to edit some videos and as you can guess it use a lot of resources. The problem is that it eats all my free space from the C drive and after i close the application i don;t get back my free space. I assume it does some swap files but where and why it doesn't delete them? I don't store the project and saved files on C drive. I'm running Pinnacle Studio 12 on a XP sp3 Windows machine. I've tried to clean my system with CClean, but it doesn't find/see where my space is lost! TY

  • Free MPEG cutting/cropping/editing tool

    I'm looking for a free tool to cut MPEG's that are created by recording from a USB cable receiver. There are a number of applications that do this, and some are free, but most of them take the video and audio decoded and pass them into a codec again to write the final output. I already have the MPEG's encoded the way I like, so what I need is a tool that can strip the beginning and the ending of the recording before and optionally commercial breaks, by rearranging the data within the file, not re-encoding it. Now I'm using some old software that came with the cable-receiver, but this actually re-encodes the video when exporting. I've tried VirtualDub but had major trouble getting the audio and video streams to stay in sync (and this was also re-encoding)... I found this which comes pretty close, but doesn't allow much accuracy in selecting cut positions.

  • Linux servers vs Windows IIS sense of usage "free" solutions

    I wonder what is the sense of using "free" open source solutions for serious webstie applications? Crawled and read many testing of servers performance and there is one conclusion: IIS seems to be the best choice for high load applicatiom. I mean cost effective. Especially this concers to Nginx PLUS and LiteSpeed Users where subscriptions paid for e.g. LoadBalacer and extra support cost a lot in fact. I'm asking then where it's "free" then or "cheap" in this case? Assuming even little higher cost of dedicated servers with Windows still seems like Windows looks cheaper. At it's basic setup Windows 2012 with IIS offer much more than std LAMP, or other NGINX config.... Maybe am I missing sth ? I mean only general case for someone who did not already started his app. I know exactly that the cheapest solution is the one someone is skilled. Has anyone done already such real costs calculation for example scenarios?

  • Outlook 2010 Unable to See Free/Busy Information While Outlook 2007 can

    In this office, most of us are using Outlook 2007, while a few of us uses Outlook 2010. For Outlook 2007, we are able to view other people's free busy information after hacking the registry of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar and enter a new DWORD value data called 'UseLegacyFB' and set the value as 1. Once we do that, we are able to view people's free/busy information. I don't know what to do with the Outlook 2010, since hacking the registry and updating windows did not work. Help? :(
