• Database Modelling - Conceptually different entities with near identical fields

  Suppose you have two sets of conceptual entities: MarketPriceDataSet which has multiple ForwardPriceEntries PoolPriceForecastDataSet which has multiple PoolPriceForecastEntry Both different child objects have near identical fields: ForwardPriceEntry has StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForwardPrice MarketPriceDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) PoolPriceForecastEntry has StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForecastPoolPrice PoolPriceForecastDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) If I modelled them as separate tables, the only difference would be the foreign key, and the name of the price field. There has been a debate as to whether the two near identical tables should be merged into one. Options I've thought of to model this is: Just keep them as two independent, separate tables Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and a parent_id equalling a foreign key to either parent table. This would sacrifice referential integrity checks. Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and create a complicated sequence of joining tables to maintain referential integrity. What do you think I should do, and why?

• Determine cluster size of file system in Python

  I would like to calculate the "size on disk" of a file in Python. Therefore I would like to determine the cluster size of the file system where the file is stored. How do I determine the cluster size in Python? Or another built-in method that calculates the "size on disk" will also work. I looked at os.path.getsize but it returns the file size in bytes, not taking the FS's block size into consideration. I am hoping that this can be done in an OS independent way...

• Live streaming using Flash

  Hi, I was working on an application that streams live video using Flash client and Wowza media server. As of now, I use an independent desktop based encoder(Flash Media Live Encoder) to publish my live stream. I wanted to know if it is possible to do the encoding part in the browser? My application would be a used by many to publish their streams so I cannot ask everyone to use FMLE to publish. I was wondering how do the other web based video chat applications do the encoding part over the web. Please help. Thanks

• What is the best way to clear the CSS style "float"?

  I'm pretty accustomed to clearing my floats by using <br style="clear:both"/> but stuff keeps on changing and I am not sure if this is the best practice. There is a CSS hack (from positioneverything) available that lets you achieve the same result without the clearing div. But... they claim the hack is a little out of date and instead you perhaps should look at this hack. But.. after reading through 700 pages of comments :) it seems there may be some places the latter hack does not work. I would like to avoid any javascript hacks cause I would like my clearing to work regardless of javascript being enabled. What is the current best practice for clearing divs in a browser independent way?

• How to find GTK version in PHP-GTK2?

  This one is driving me nuts. According to GTK's site, there exists GTK_MAJOR_VERSION, GTK_MINOR_VERSION, and GTK_MICRO_VERSION constants. However, none of these work: echo GTK_MAJOR_VERSION; echo GtK::MAJOR_VERISON; echo Gtk::GTK_MAJOR_VERSION; etc Also, Gtk::check_version(2,12,0) always fails even though I have a higher version. I'd like to simply get the actual version number and not rely on check_version, which seems unreliable. How can I do this? I need to do it within PHP, platform independent.

• Fadeout a tiled background image in load using JQuery

  Hi, I've used JQuery in the past to fade divs in and out successfully. However, I have encountered a situation I can't quite wrap my head around: I am coding a site for a designer who has based the formatting of all the elements on a grid pattern he's created. As he wants the pattern elements to be the same size independent of the browser window, I think I can only do this via a repeating background tiled image in CSS. Now he wants the background pattern (only) to come in dark and fade to very light, while not effecting any of the other elements. Am I right in thinking it's impossible to call a tiled background pattern using a CSS selector? Does anyone have any suggestions of a workaround to this problem?

Abstract class A Class B extends class A independent Class C In class D that contains the main method, I create a list of instances of class B List<B> b = methodCall(); // the method returns a list of instances of class B Now in class C I have one method that is common to both A and B, and hence I don't want to duplicate it. I want to have one method that takes as input an instance of class A, as follows: public void someMethod(List<A> a) However, when I do: C c = new C(); c.someMethod(b); I get an error that some-method is not applicable for the argument List<B>, instead it's expecting to get List<A>.   Unless I misunderstood it, this LINK from Apple's documentation clearly states that the class initializer, "+ (void)initialize)", only executes once per class. Here is the excerpt: Special Considerations initialize it is invoked only once per class. If you want to perform independent initialization for the class and for categories of the class, you should implement load methods. However, I'm getting a weird behavior on my project and the initializer is being executed twice. So I have to check if _classContext is null. I only got one class that has this method. What are the possible reasons why this is happening? I'm using XCode 4.5.2 and OS X 10.8.2. • PL DOC source forge - 2 issues

  I'm attempting to use PLDOC source forge (http://pldoc.sourceforge.net/maven-site/) with my code to generate a neat page with comments of my liking. I'm coming across 2 issues, any help would be appreciated. 1 I've been using tags (/**, */) to make comments and this works perfectly for functions, but does not appear in procedures. My Functions and procedures are independent and not in packages, and trying to add comments before the PROCEDURE declaration just gets deleted when saved. 2 if i try to use the recommended method of getting the data directly from teh database (call pldoc.bat -url jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:ORCL -user SCOTT -password TIGER -sql SYS_OWNER.DBMS_PIPE,SYS_OWNER.DBMS_OUTPUT), it puts all the available functions and procedures under the user SIS_OWNER (SIS_owner is the only link available on the left hand side). I want to change this so that I can view all the methods in the list instead. Problem with procedures stated in 1 still exists with this method. Please let me know if you have overcome this and any pointers would be great. Thanks

  The output from MongoDB's map/reduce includes something like 'counts': {'input': I, 'emit': E, 'output': O}. I thought I clearly understand what those mean, until I hit a weird case which I can't explain. According to my understanding, counts.input is the number of rows that match the condition (as specified in query). If so, how is it possible that the following two queries have different results? db.mycollection.find({MY_CONDITION}).count() db.mycollection.mapReduce(SOME_MAP, SOME_REDUCE, {'query': {MY_CONDITION}}).counts.input I thought the two should always give the same result, independent of the map and reduce functions, as long as the same condition is used.

• Embarrassingly parallel workflow creates too many output files

  On a Linux cluster I run many (N > 10^6) independent computations. Each computation takes only a few minutes and the output is a handful of lines. When N was small I was able to store each result in a separate file to be parsed later. With large N however, I find that I am wasting storage space (for the file creation) and simple commands like ls require extra care due to internal limits of bash: -bash: /bin/ls: Argument list too long. Each computation is required to run through a qsub scheduling algorithm so I am unable to create a master program which simply aggregates the output data to a single file. The simple solution of appending to a single fails when two programs finish at the same time and interleave their output. I have no admin access to the cluster, so installing a system-wide database is not an option. How can I collate the output data from embarrassingly parallel computation before it gets unmanageable?

But to me, a raw pointer (to an object or to a function) in C++ does seem to me to satisfy the conditions stated above to qualify as a first class object. Am I missing something?

  I have 2 applications.First one is a web application through which we provision reference data.Second one is an ESB based application where the reference data is used.The reference data changes but not very frequently.We needed to cache the reference data.The web application( I am not the owner) used hibernate. But my ESB based application did not.We only used EHCache. When reference data is changed by the independent web application that needs to be reflected in ESB application.We implemented using message queue - that is when reference data changes web application sends a message to the message queue.Our ESB application listens to that message & clears the cache & caches the data once again.This works.But it is time intensive.How can I use Hibernate to improve the situation? • Is iOS6 simulator buggy when deleting applications?

  Frequently, when I try to delete an app on the iOS 6 simulator that comes with Xcode 4.5, the simulator freezes. What I do is just long press on the app. Delete dialog doesn't come up and the icons keep on wiggling. Quitting and re-opening the simulator does not help to delete the app. I've tried to delete the app's folder from /Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/5.1/Applications folder. Sometimes this helps but sometimes even this doesn't delete the icon from the simulator. This behavior is independent of the iOS version or the device model. It's the same whichever model/iOS I choose. The only thing that helps is using the Reset Contents and Settings option of the simulator. Do you experience the same frustration? If so, have you figured out a workaround besides resetting the simulator completely?

  I've got a classification problem in my hand, which I'd like to address with a machine learning algorithm ( Bayes, or Markovian probably, the question is independent on the classifier to be used). Given a number of training instances, I'm looking for a way to measure the performance of an implemented classificator, with taking data overfitting problem into account. That is: given N[1..100] training samples, if I run the training algorithm on every one of the samples, and use this very same samples to measure fitness, it might stuck into a data overfitting problem -the classifier will know the exact answers for the training instances, without having much predictive power, rendering the fitness results useless. An obvious solution would be seperating the hand-tagged samples into training, and test samples; and I'd like to learn about methods selecting the statistically significant samples for training. I use an ORM framework, XPO from DevExpress. But, I have no access control function built in. I am wondering who has such an experience to build access control in ORM. My basic requirement is : It should be a general method and controlled by users in runtime. So any hard coding is not acceptable. It could be based on attribute, database table, or even an external assembly. I am willing to buy a ready solution. According to the idea of AOP, an access control function can be integrated with existing functions easily and nearly not knowingly to the previous developer;) Any suggestions are welcome.

  Hi, Because of a strange C++ warning about the visibility of some symbols and an interesting answer, linking to a paper which describes the different visibility types and cases (section 2.2.4 is about C++ classes), I started to wonder if it is needed for a standalone application to export symbols at all (except main - or is that needed?). Why exactly are they needed to be exported in standalone applications? Is "an exported symbol" an synomym for "visible symbol"? I.e. a hidden symbol is a symbol which is not exported? Do the object files already differ between visible symbols and hidden symbols? Or is this made at the linking step, so that only the visible symbols are exported? Does the visibility of symbols matter in case for debug information? Or is that completely independent, i.e. I would also get a nice backtrace if I have all symbols hidden? How is STABS/DWARF related to the visibility of symbols?

The preferences program ?should? write to a Property file(not a problem at all) and to send a "update signal" to the main program - which mean, to call the update method(that i wrote) that found in the Main class. How can i call the update method in the Main program from the preferences program? Or in the other hand... There is a way to build preferences window that take system resources just when it's appear? • JavaScript helper libraries? No DOM or AJAX stuff

  As I'm writing JavaScript I'm always missing some fairly basic language features that JavaScript just don't have. So is there any library that would bring such features as trim, sprintf, str.endwith and etc. functions to JavaScript ? I just have written those functions too many times and I'm also tired of copy/pasting them from my old code. It would be nice to have some library which has those implemented and tested in one place. Note that I'm not talking about Ajax/DOM-libraries like jQuery or Dojo and such. I know that those libraries bring some of the features that I'm talking here, but not all. And I would like to have also an environment independent library so that same library could be used with server side JavaScript . Best library so far that I've found is php.js, but I don't like how it is polluting the global namespace. I'm also not too fond of how PHP-functions are named.

• Slickgrid, confirm before edit

  I am making a slick grid and need the ability to add rows with a code column. For this to be possible the code column needs to be editable for the entire table. I am trying to work out a way that I can confirm the edit with a standard javascript confirm popup box. I tried putting one into the onedit event within the slickgrid constructor and that executed after the edit. I am led to believe that the edit function is independent from calling the edit stored procedure of the database. Is there a better way to go about this?   Hello, I am having a form and many input elements in that. I want certain fields to be validated, so i keep validateLenth etc on those. And i want some fields to not be validated. For example, i have contact information and address information both on the same page. I want to treat contact information as one group. So if some fields are invalid they should not be submitted and address information to be independent of contact information. Thus, if address information is corrected it should be submitted. • Why I cannot see an image if I do not use the full name of an image?

  I try to add an image to JPanel. It works if I specify the full name of the image (including name of all folders). But I want my software to be machine independent (another machine does not have the same folder structure as my machine has). So, I put my image to the same place where the source is and in my code I use just name of the image (no folders' names). It does not work. I put my image into the folder where my executables are. It does not work again. So, why it does not work and what can I do with that?
