  Does anyone know an easy way to write files to a DVD from the command line. I've found a program that does it for CDs, and another that writes .ISO images to DVD. I want to use it to write files to a backup DVD overnight.

• Windows 8 upgrade to windows 8.1 RTM fails with error code 0x101 - 0x2000C

  I have a MSDN Subscription and downloaded Windows 8.1 RTM today. It fails to install. After mounting the ISO and installing (with a Windows 8.1 Pro product code), selecting "Keep my apps and settings", it copies all installation files, restarts and then bluescreens at around 50%, then rolls back to the previous version. System has 64 GB Memory, Supermicro, Xeon E5-1650, Intel SSD, runs Hyper-V, Windows 8 Pro. What may be causing this and how do I fix it?

• Lenovo remote control media redirect

  On a lenovo ThinkServer RD240 running firmware 1.20 with the latest BNC software, using the remote console to redirect a CD-ROM fails with the error: "CD-ROM redirection is not supported on this platform". Similar error for forwarding an iso image, foppy and USB drive. I tried executing the management console from Ubuntu, Windows 7 and OS X with the exact same error. The question is: What platform does the jViewer console support any kind of media redirection?

• What is the difference between the BIN file generated by ImgBurn and UltraISO

  I have a CD that I would like to generate a BIN file from (with a CUE file to accompany it). I used ImgBurn and UltraISO to to generate two BIN files. However, I have found out that BIN files generated by these programs are not identical (different file size). So, what is the difference between the BIN file formats and which one should I use to backup CD? The same applies to ISO file generation by these two programs - file size does not match.

• Wiping a laptop from Bios

  I am trying to wipe an old laptops hard drive, it doesn't have a CD drive so have been using a USB to try and wipe the hard drive from the BIOS. I have been using http://www.dban.org/ which I installed as an ISO on the USB Stick. When ever I try to boot into this I get an error saying 'No operating system' Does anyone know of a way to wipe a hard drive? I also tried to boot into safe mode but I just stay on a constant loop. • Is there any open source DVD duplication software like Nero?

  Nero Essentials isn't working right and I wondered if there was anything open source that I could use. I need to duplicate a DVD that I have authored - not a data disc a "real" dvd (with vob files, etc.) CDBurnerXP did not have this. Or, if I create an .iso is that the same thing when I burn it back to my duplicate? Thanks.

  I'm preparing to remotely install Windows 2008 Standard onto a 6250 blade module mounted in a SunBlade 6000 chassis rack. Are there any gotchas (aside from the predictable issues related to bandwidth in transferring the ISO, etc.) for this? Has anyone else successfully completed this task? I'm not a hardware guy, I'm a software guy who has been handed this task because the guys in the datacenter don't want to touch it. Any help is appreciated.

I've used an SNMP browser to inspect a few of my systems and none of them show a HOST branch under ISO.ORG.DOD.INTERNET.MGMT.MIB-2. Any thoughts as to why? I'm looking to monitor a few computer's hardware resources via SNMP and unfortuantely all such OIDs live under the missing HOST branch, Any thoughts?

• Grub doesn't find any partition, what can I do?

  So I just recently installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my desktop machine alongside Windows 7, it booted just fine the first few times but after I went into my Windows 7 recovery software provided by Packard Bell (I did this on accident BTW I exited it straight away and made no changes as far as I know) and re-booted I get this screen: error: no such partition grub rescue>_ PS: I have installed it on a USB stick using the ISO on the official Ubuntu website.

• CRC error when extracting to SSD from 2nd HDD

  I just bought a TDK HC-R90 Recordable blank CD that's supposedly 800 MB, but when I put it in my Macbook, Finder says there's only 100 MB available. WTF? I'm trying to burn the 575.8 MB Anonym.OS live cd (.iso), I dunno if that makes a difference.

  It seems one cannot mount a tar file (read only), similarly as one mounts an ISO image file. At least, I have not found any implementation. It would be useful, for example to run a find command inside. Is this really (or practically) impossible to implement? Why?

  I have a server which I'd like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on, but I've had some problems and thought it would be nice to get things working in a Virtualbox VM with the same features as the server. I want to enable UEFI-boot in the VM. I "Enable EFI" in the System / Motherboard settings for the VM. I make sure the Ubuntu Server 12.04 ISO is inserted when I boot. And yet I get stuck in the UEFI boot console when I start the VM. How do I install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in a UEFI boot-enabled Virtualbox machine?

  This may sound like a strange question, but I was wondering if there is software available which can emulate the behaviour of standalone dvd-players. I'm currently debugging a DVD we're creating, and I can't afford to go hopping to my house every time to check.   I have a fresh install of Windows and a Linux OS that I can't access, how do I fix this? I do not have the .iso/disk for Linux anymore. So I figured, I can install Cygwin and through that install Grub, but I am used to Linux Mint, which uses apt-get. I have used CentOS before which uses rpm, but how do I install and use packages in the Cygwin terminal, and is it possible to install Grub through Cygwin?

  I have the windows 8 release preview 32 bit iso and it fails to install when booted out of a flash drive, it copies the files and the boot loader installs but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 the first time, it simply keeps on spinning forever. I did a vhd install of Windows 8 developer preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present.

• whats the default username and password for an ubuntu live cd?

  What's the username and password for an ubuntu live cd image? I ask cause I've recently copied the contents of an ubuntu based live iso (easypeasy, the ldistro for nwtbooks) onto a harddisk, but the squash fs is corrupt. Most likely cause I copied it live. :) so it's not autologging in. Is there a username/password for this? Update: I tried username ubuntu and a blank password, it didn't work
