• Install Windows 8 without a Product Key

  Windows 8 setup asks for the product key at the beginning of the setup without letting you install it. I got the Windows 8 ISO from MSDN but I didn't get enough keys to install it on all my 7 computers. Also, my MSDN subscription level doesn't allow me to get the VL product key to Windows 8 Enterprise. Is there any way I can install Windows 8 for a limited time period like we used to do for Windows 7 ?

  Task I am trying to convert a virtual machine to a live CD. Specifically, the virtual machine I am trying to convert is the IOI 2013 Competition Environment. In this task, I am aided by a guide Converting a virtual disk image: VDI or VMDK to an ISO you can distribute. Symptoms However, after getting through all the instructions, the live CD causes a kernel panic on boot on bare metal. If anyone knows which packages needs installing/uninstalling at the .rootfs/ chroot directory stage, please let me know. Details on procedure Do note that after importing the .ova file into Virtualbox, the virtual machine is stored as a .vmdk file already, and not a .vdi file. I would like to point out some results of the procedure followed in case of any questions. This is after extracting the filesystem from the .raw file to the .rootfs/ directory mentioned in the blog. I changed the filesystem table as mentioned in the blog, then looked at the possible "kernel optimized for virtualization". However, I found that linux-image-generic was already installed. Also, when running the command dpkg-query --showformat='${Package}\n' -W 'vmware-tools*' (or dpkg-query --showformat='${Package}\n' -W '*-virtual'), no packages were found. Thus, I did not find any virtualization specific packages. I proceeded to generate the iso following the steps in the blog, and burned it to a DVD.

  So i just recently installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my desktop machine alongside Windows 7, it booted just fine the first few times but after i went into my windows 7 recovery software provided by packard bell( i did this on accident BTW i exited it straight away and made no changes as far as i know) and re-booted i get this screen: error: no such partition grub rescue_ PS: i installed it on a USB stick using the ISO on the official ubuntu website.

  I've been trying to follow Scott Hanselman's post on installing the Win8 RP on a vhd, using the win8 .iso on a dvd, but the install wont start.   Did you miss out on the Windows 7 public beta and want to try it out before you actually make the leap and upgrade? Maybe you want to learn how to deploy new features in a business environment. Here’s how you can test drive Windows 7 directly from your browser. Whether you manage 10,000 desktops or simply manage your own laptop, it’s usually best to test out a new OS before installing it.  If you’re upgrading from Windows XP you may find many things unfamiliar.  Microsoft has setup a special Windows 7 Test Drive website with resources to help IT professionals test and deploy Windows 7 in their workplaces.  This is a great resource to try out Windows 7 from the comfort of your browser, and look at some of the new features without even installing it. Please note that the online version is not nearly as responsive as a full standard install of Windows 7.  It also does not run the full Aero interface or desktop effects, and may refresh slowly depending on your Internet connection.  So don’t judge Windows 7’s performance based on this virtual lab, but use it as a way to learn more about Windows 7 without installing it. Getting Started To test drive Windows 7, visit Microsoft’s Windows 7 Test Drive website (link below).  You will need to run the Windows 7 Test Drive in Internet Explorer, as it requires Active X support.  We received this error when attempting to run the Test Drive in Firefox: Now, click the “Take a Test Drive” link on the bottom left of the page. This site includes several test drives to demonstrate different features of Windows 7 and its related ecosystem of products including Windows Server 2008 R2, some of which, including the XP Mode test drive, are not yet ready.  For this test, we selected the MED-V Test drive, as this includes Office 2007 and 2010 so you can test them in Windows 7 as well.  Simply select the test drive you want, and click “Try it now!”   If you haven’t run a Windows test drive before, you will be asked to install an ActiveX control.  Click the link to install. Click the yellow bar at the top of the page in Internet Explorer, and select to Install the add-on.  You may have to approve a UAC prompt to finish the install. Once this is finished, click the link on the bottom of the page to return to your test drive.  The test drive page should automatically refresh; if it doesn’t, click refresh to reload it. Or you can even test the newest version of Media Center, though it will warn you that it may not function good with the down-scaled graphics in the test drive.   Most importantly, you can try out the new features in Windows 7, such as Jumplists and even Aero Snap.  Once again, these features will not function the quickest, but it does let you test them out. While working with the Virtual Lab, there are different tasks it walks you through. You can also download a copy of the lab manual in PDF format to help you navigate through the various objectives. The test drive system is running Microsoft Forefront Security, the enterprise security solution from which Microsoft Security Essentials has adapted components from. Conclusion These virtual labs are great for tech students, or those of you who want to get a first-hand trial of the new features. • Upgrade Kubuntu 11.10 to 12.10 I get error code that 11.10 is outdated

  I installed Kubuntu 11.10 on top of Windows 7. Everything works fine. I tried to update 11.10 to 12.10 and I get error Code that 11.10 is outdated and not supported. Update stops. I downloaded 12.10 iso but there is no upgrade option, just install. How can I remove the 11.10 installation and install 12.10. (Without breaking my Windows 7 install.) I need dual boot option. • Will it be possible to use a non-pae kernel in 12.10

  I know that Ubuntu +1 questions are frowned upon, but this I believe is a fair exception. Currently I have 2 systems running Ubuntu 12.10, and one of them has a Pentium M that doesn't support PAE (strange I know, but true). This has meant in the past that I had to rely on a custom iso to install Ubuntu a similar system,and so this time I went with Xubuntu 12.04. My question is 2 fold, but really one question: Is it/will it be possible to install a non-pae version of the 12.10 kernel from the standard repositories? If no, how can I get such a kernel? (Is there a PPA with such a kernel available?). NB: Before anyone suggests that I just install this package: http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/linux-image-generic, please note that this comes with PAE enabled. P.S. Yes, I have Googled. I haven't found the answer.

  I am trying to installing Ubuntu 12.10 on my Mac Mini (End 2009). This sounds like a often asked question and I all ready read lots of stuff about it, but now I am confused. While some people say, there are heavy problems by installing Ubuntu on a Mac Mini, such as components (like Sound card, graphic card, …) don't work very well, others say, that it should work perfectly fine. I figured out that installing UBNTU on a Mac isn't as easy (can't just downld the .iso and use unetboot, …) as it is on a PC. So, is it possible to install Ubuntu 12.10 on a Mac Mini 2009 (end), so everything works well?

• Review quality of code

  I have been asked to quality review two code bases. I've never done anything like that, and need advice on how to perform it and report it. Background There are two providers of code, one in VB and one in C (ISO 9899:1999 (C99)). These two programs do not work so well together, and of course, the two suppliers blames each other. I will therefore as a independent person review both codes, on a comprehensive level review the quality of the codes to find out where it is most likely that the problem lies. I will not try to find problems, but simply review the quality and how simple it is to manage and understand the code. Edit: I have yet not received much information about what the problem consists of. I've just been told that I will examine the code in terms of quality. Not so much more. I do not know the background to why they took this decision.

• Ubuntu Minimal in the new Intel NUC Haswell

  I have one the of the new Haswell NUCs that just came out - D34010WYK. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23089&lang=eng&OSVersion=OS%20Independent&DownloadType=Documentation), I tried to load ubuntu minimal 13.10 x64 from the mini.iso and it cannot properly detect a network during install - my guess is a driver issue. Tried 12.04 lts and it doesnt even see the NIC at all. Is there anything I could do to get one of the current versions to see the network properly? I did try the latest trusty nightly desktop and it did install without issue. Is there a minimal version of that? Thanks Ernie

The question here is simple: What are the clear and complete step-by-step instructions that you used to dual-boot 12.04 on your OSX Lion (entrapped) Apple computer. Did you use rEFIt, rEFIind, a special .iso of 12.04? What? Obviously, there is a preference for safer, easier, and more reversible methods. I can probably assure that the best answer will get plenty of views.

• Booting the liveCD/USB in efi mode fails on tablet xe700t1a

  My tablet is Samsung Series 7 Slate (xe700t1a-a02fr). It operates an intel sandy bridge architecture. The main issue about this tablet is that it ships with a windows 7 install in (U)EFI mode (GPT partition table, etc.), so I'd like to get an EFI dual boot with Ubuntu. But it seems I can't boot on the liveCD in EFI mode. It starts loading (up to initrd), but I then get a blank (black) screen. I've tried the nomodeset kernel option (as well as removing quiet and splash) with no luck. I have used the 12.04.1 desktop iso (I have read somewhere that it is the only one that can boot in EFI mode). What are the other leads I can follow ? thanks

  I know there are problems (and have been for quite some time) with the diNovo Edge keyboard. The solution could be found easily and often you can use the on-screen keyboard to fix it. Now I'm installing Ubuntu from scratch and the only keyboard I have is my diNovo, am I screwed? You are able to get to System Config during the install process and from there to Accessibility menu where you usually can start the on-screen keyboard. This doesn't work, no keyboard in sight... What if I can do some ninja copy-paste with the mouse?? Nope, no pasting allowed in the feilds: username, password, etc. Is there a chance I can fix this somehow within the .iso file before I create the bootable USB drive I use to install from? Or do I have to buy a keyboard to be able to install Ubuntu?

• Downloads killing internet on my home network

  I am currently having a problem with my wireless. Whenever I try to download anything it kills the internet for every other application(tabs within the same browser, browsers on other computers on the same network) except the process doing the download. This occurs with everything from downloading updates to iso's. I am not using a torrent. It happens when downloading upgrades, browser downloads, or anything else. This problem does not occur when I use Windows 7 on the same computer and it stops killing the internet for other computers if I turn the download/Ubuntu off. I am using an ASUS G74SX laptop running Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. My wireless card is an Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150 (rev 67) Thanks!

  I'm trying to create a bootable USB image to install Ubuntu on a new computer. I have done this before following the "create USB drive" instructions for Ubuntu desktop, but I don't have an Ubuntu desktop available. How can I do the same using only the command line? Things I've tried: Create bootable USB on Mac OS X following the ubuntu.com "create USB drive" instructions for Mac: Doesn't boot. usb-creator: According to apt-cache search usb-creator and Wikipedia usb-creator only exists as a graphical tool. "Create manually" instructions at help.ubuntu.com: None of the files and directories described (e.g. casper, filesystem.manifest, menu.lst) exist in the ISO image, and I don't know what has replaced them. (At my disposal is Mac OS X and Ubuntu server; I have neither Ubuntu desktop nor Windows.)

• Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on Asus Eee PC 701 4G - boot process hangs up

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Insall Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

  A borrowed a friend workstation with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I do not have the administrator password and I would like to format everything and install Ubuntu 12.04. I have put the iso on the usb using PendriveLinux and restarted the machine. At the boot I am presented with several options but those Ubuntu ones simply load my friends Ubuntu 10.10 OS (for which I have no password). edit: I fixed this by pressing F12 at the boot before it gave me that prompt (called GRUB). I clicked USB and finally install.

• How to UEFI install Ubuntu 12.10?

  Running a newer FM1 motherboard which is using an AMD 3870k APU with a new 1TB HDD. Following the advice in the motherboard manual and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI have now got to grub option screen for UEFI install. see http://imgur.com/VW5vz The dvd.iso being used is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop amd64 from ubuntu .com. The hdd has had a gpt partition table made for, by using gparted when in a live desktop session when booted in bios mode. (*edit/update: Although the old cd updates on running it is an old kernel and it did make a gpt but that version of gparted uses fdisk whereas gdisk is required to make gpt. Think am going to have to spend more time here http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gparted.html lol Using the gparted from 12.10 live session to make partitions; following the guidance regarding this at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Creating_an_EFI_partition, but can only boot to grub option screen http://imgur.com/VW5vz when 12.10 options to "try ubuntu" or "install ubuntu" are selected they give errors as described below*) but after making the gpt decided to leave it unformatted/unallocated space with the intention of using installer to set up partitions. update-originally but gparted now sees hdd as http://imgur.com/hFIvm as described above. *Booting live dvd in EFI mode gives "Secure Boot not installed" just before grub kernel option list with the option to "install ubuntu" but get "can not read cd/0" and "the kernel must be loaded first" errors; when that option is selected. Any pointers on how to get installer going for UEFI install would be good. Looking at other similar questions was good fun and found this 12.10 UEFI Secure Boot install the most relative in helping getting ubuntu to uefi install on my system. In response to wolverine's question this article was referred to http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ This article in the first sentence gives a link to http://www.ubuntu.com/download which is where i downloaded the 12.10 desktop amd64 .iso(and others) but have been unable to do a efi install of ubuntu on this system and as this is a new system have ended up just going with bios installer running which at least puts my mind at ease that i have not bricked my new mobo.(had to do a clrcmos and flash to latest bios version) So it possibly could be the bios settings or the bios version being used that is problem. To try and eliminate bios version i can not get to post screen in order to id bios version being used. Pressing tab to show post instead of logo and trying to pausebreak to catch post is proving difficult. If logo screen in bios is disabled just get black screen no post shown and pressing tab does not show post. Appreciate using appropriate bios settings and latest 12.10 release should simply get uefi installer running when selected from the grub list (nice graphic details in Identifying if computer boots the cd in efi mode section at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Identifying_if_the_computer_boots_the_CD_in_EFI_mode) And to confirm the hdd is booting in efi mode https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Identifying_if_the_computer_boots_the_HDD_in_EFI_mode running the command [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "EFI boot on HDD" || echo "Legacy boot on HDD" gave Legacy boot on HDD This is as expected because i allowed the bios installer (which was 12.04 desktop amd64 after trying 12.10 desktop amd64 in efi mode) to run to get a working installation. Which is not what was intended or wished for but wanted to get a working os to bench test new mobo i.e. prove it is working. There are other options as in installing other bootmanagers/loaders but do not wish to do so as shim should get grub2 going that is after secure boot has been signed.(Now got rough idea what should happen just it aint happening. Is it possible ahci drivers are required?) Will post boot info script url of the updated config/setup. The original question asked seems irrelevant to what is being said in this update but as the problem is not resolved will keep on trying efi installing! i.e the problem is same as when question asked just trying to update. Have tried to edit and update the best i can!

  I am not a computer savvy and need to know how to partition my USB drive without messing up my laptop. I already have the boot order set up properly and the USB drive already has the ISO image downloaded onto it. I am ready for install but just do not know how to partition. I am installing Ubuntu 12.4 LTS onto a USB. Can someone help me? I need an easy walk through please. What I need to know is from the screen shots above do I use the swap drive and if so how do i partition that drive to be my drive? I am stuck up to this part on the installation process. Yes please make a list of the steps for me.
