• Code Contracts and Pex at MSDN Live 2010

  One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex.  Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts  has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008).   Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/dd491992.aspx . This download is a free download.   Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. Start to get it from here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx .  The current version as of 14.4.10 is 0.9, which works with the 2010 RC.  A new version is due this week.  Pex is a tool to generate unit tests, and does this very intelligently.  Perfect to make tests for legacy code, but also to make sure you get all paths tested.  See the Reference information and project startup information.

  I hope, gentle programmers, that you'll forgive me for not asking a "Soft Question" on theoreticalCS.SE and asking this here. It has recently come to my attention that bigendian came from Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. I was pretty surprised when listening to the book on my commute to hear something I'd only heard before in Comp Sci / Engineering classes. I thought it was some sort of nouveau-politically incorrect piece of holdover jargon like Master and Slave drives or Polish Notation. Are there any other incidents, not of politically incorrect jargon, but of literature influencing aspects of computers, programming or software development?

• Idoc Script Plug-in for Notepad++

  For those of you that caught it in an earlier post, Arnoud Koot wrote a great Idoc Script plug-in for Notepad++.  Well, he's back at it and has written an update for 11g! Arnoud made his announcement a few days ago on the WebCenter Content forum. And it looks like Jonathan Hult caught it as well and posted to his blog. A great addition to his plug-in is context sensitive help.  Now you can look up the variables and functions without having to switch to the formal Oracle documentation. He's even provided a tool to update the help automatically based on the Oracle documentation.  A couple of things to look for that I had missed the instructions was the note about updating the LanguageHelp.ini with your own path to the iDoc11g.chm file as well as the <ctrl><space> keystroke for the auto-complete. • KCDC 2011

  Well, Saturday was my presentation on Programming with Windows Azure, and it went well. Everything worked as I had wanted and I got to everything that I had planned. I did not even need my emergency backup filler. I only hope that the folks who attended got something from it. As for the whole conference, I think it was a resounding success. There were a LOT of good sessions to attend and people to meet. I had a great time, and I look forward to next year with great anticipation. Kudos to all (Lee, Jonathan, Boon(?)) and all (Jasmine, Nathan) who put this on. Great job, everyone!

• USB (wireless) keyboard not recognised during install

  I'm just trying my first trip into the world of Ubuntu. Trying to install from CD on to a virgin machine, I get the initial language prompt, select 'English', I get the Ubuntu install options, select 'Install Ubuntu Server'. I'm then presented with a further 'Language for installation' screen. At this point my keyboard stops working...! Some specifics: I'm using a Logitech wireless USB keyboard - it works fine on another machine; Machine is a ProLiant Micorserver N54L (No PS/2 ports); BIOS USB support is set to Legacy. Any ideas...? • Command Query Separation

  Command query separation is a strategy, proposed by Bertrand Meyer, that each of an object’s methods should be either a command or a query. A command is an operation that changes the state of a system, and a query is an operation that returns a value. This is not the same thing as CQRS, hence why I think that CQRS is poorly named. An Example of Command Query Separation Consider a system that models books and shelves. There is a rule that a shelf may not be removed if it holds any books. One way to implement the removal is to write a method Shelf.Remove() that internally checks to make sure that the shelf is empty before removing it. If the shelf is not empty then it is not removed and an error is returned. To implement this feature following the principle of command query separation would require two methods, one to query the shelf and determine if it is empty and a second method to remove the shelf. Separating the query from the command makes the shelf class simpler to use because the state change is clear and explicit.
