  • Remote Desktop (Vino-Server) connects but display doesn't work?

    Ubuntu comes default with vino-server, I can remote into my machine, and connect to it, however, the display inside my remote client, is a mirror of my own desktop. I tried using one monitor, thinking that's what is the issue but still won't work.   • VBA ActiveX controls grow in size over Remote Desktop Connection

    We have an Excel workbook with a number of ActiveX controls, running in Excel 2003 on Windows XP. When connecting using Remote Desktop, the ActiveX controls change font, sometimes font size, and sometimes orientation (in the case of a spinner control). This happens on first connection and also as the workbook is used - some of the controls then enlarge in size, often overlapping other controls and part of the workbook. I read somewhere this may be caused by improper connection management (not closing them) leading to increasing memory usage; are there other reasons why the display is so different over Remote Desktop and are there workarounds? (the properties of each control usually remain the same, so force-resizing them doesn't always have an effect)

  • Options for keeping models and the UI in sync (in a desktop application context)

    In my experience I have only had 2 patterns work for large-scale desktop application development when trying to keep the model and UI in sync. 1-An eventbus approach via a shared eventbus command objects are fired (ie:UserDemographicsUpdatedEvent) and have various parts of the UI update if they are bound to the same user object updated in this event. 2-Attempt to bind the UI directly to the model adding listeners to the model itself as needed. I find this approach rather clunky as it pollutes the domain model. Does anybody have other suggestions? In a web application with something like JSP binding to the model is easy as you ussually only care about the state of the model at the time your request comes in, not so in a desktop type application. Any ideas?

  • Embed remote desktop in browser

    I would like to embed a Remote Desktop session within my browser. I must use remote desktop because my clients can't install any additional software on the server. Here are some problems that I can already foresee: 1) I believe that I can embed an RDP ActiveX control, but then all I could support is IE. And even then, IE lockdown may forbid ActiveX controls. 2) I don't know anything about Apple computers, but I presume that they don't inherently run RDP? 3) I think there are ways to run RDP through a Java control. I don't have experience to know if this is a good or bad idea. I suppose that Java may even be disabled on some browsers, but don't know if this is a common case? So, what options have I got here to make this work reliably? I presume that I may need some default options (ie ActiveX), and then some fallback options (ie Java), and code to identify the correct option each time.

But how can i check whether the date is passed 2 days or not? The Feed items are displayed on the desktop - however I need to colour code them according to their priority ie 1 = red etc. using the substr function - is there a better way to do this using JavaScript / HTML?     So the question is simple: is it possible to set windows desktop to corporate application page (anybody remembers that active desktop thing?) and use it instead of browser (sic!). My thoughts: Windows 7: I can create giant full-screen widget that will show my page. Still have no idea if I will be able to navigate inside it though. Windows Vista: ???. I know there is still a side bar gadget that hosts a browser. Windows XP: create static html page with iframe pointing to corporate app home page. Problem: clicking links on page still opens default browser.

    Suppose I want to create my own desktop envoriment for Linux, without X. Like Google with the Android did. Where do I start? Is it actually a normal application that just draws stuff, and starts after the kernel boot? And how does it draw it? Using OpenGL or is there something more generic?   • DVD not detected?

    As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. Edit: since I am able to boot from CD, can I safely assume the issue is not a hardware issue?   • Installing/configuring mysql server nightmare

    I've never had problems installing and configuring mysql server in kubuntu but now it's just being stubborn, here's my issue: I installed the packages mysql-server, mysql-client (both 5.1), the server package asked me to put a root password, which I did, it then started saying "access denied", on anything Later on, I decided to purge the packages and re-install and gave a tweak to the my.cnf and not it says ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Please, is there a way to do a fresh start on this and do it right this time? I don't know if I'm missing something but the /var/lib/mysql is not empty but there is no .pid, now the mysql service won't start, there is no mysql.sock either Any help appreciated

Somehow I messed up with window's settings and now the menubar (the one on top of the window, just below the titlebar, which has the File button, Edit, Settings, Help, ...) is hidden from all my KDE applications. Here you can see how the menubar should be correctly displayed: Here you can see how it is actually displayed on my netbook: I don't remember what I did to hide the menubar, I clicked somewhere in the context menu which shows right-clicking on window title, but I cannot find that setting anymore.     I have seen the answer on How to disable hibernating?, but I have no such file. Possibly because that suggestion was written for Ubuntu, not Kubuntu (KDE, not Gnome). I do not have a swap on my encrypted SSD, my system freezes (cannot even change Caps Lock) if I accidentally press the "Hibernate" button at "Energy management". My keyboard has a Hibernate button (Fn + F4) next to the volume control buttons and every time I press the wrong key, the system will freeze after. So, what is the correct way to disable it? If there is no solution, a work-around is welcome too.

Also, where do I get btrfs help? I'm not getting any replies on #btrfs on freenode.net. (Correction: I was too impatient. #btrfs was very helpful!)   • Vodafone mobile broadband dongle doesn't work

    I'm running kubuntu 10.10 and have vodafone mobile broadband dongle. When I plug it in, I can see a 'new cellular connection' , but when I try to connect it shows 'preparing to connect' but never does. I went to 'manage connections' and addded my details, like APN,PIN and PUK. but it still ain't working.. I also tried unchecking MSCHAPv2 and MSCHAP in my PPP settings, but nothing seems to work. what do i do? I'm new to linux.

  • Mouse permanently stuck on left side of screen

    One of my two monitors is died, so while my computer was turned off I unplugged the dead monitor then turned my computer back on. When I got to the log in page I typed my password and got to the desktop my mouse was stuck to the left edge of the screen. I can move it up and down, and left and right click, but it won't come off the edge. I tried switching the monitor cable to the other slot to see if that would make a difference but nothing changed. If it makes a difference, I'm using Kubuntu.

    I added KDE backported packages recently to gain access to a more stable version of KDevelop. However, now, Kontact/Kmail's search doesn't work anymore. Where do I start to find out what's wrong? The problem manifests itself that when in the Inbox folder, I type something in the search bar, no Emails will be shown. (Yes, searching for something where the email is definitely there.) Kubuntu 12.04 LTS. Kontact version 4.13. What I tried. akonadiconsole as suggested here. But I couldn't find a feeder as mentioned. More generally, isn't there a checklist or a general approach to debugging akonadi, nepomuk and Kontact?

  • Inkscape won't open .cdr files

    Hello I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 and I've installed Inkscape because I need to edit a .cdr file, Inkscape works like normal but the sole task I need it to do is edit said .cdr file which I understand it should be capable off by default. Whenever I try to open the file though I get the following error: UniConvertor failed: The eror itself is longer but what it seems to be saying that it can't find this application, and I myself haven't found it in the package manager. If someone has experienced something similar or has a simple solution for editing cdr's I'm no artist I just need to change some names, I would be very gratefull. The full error.
