  Of late, our broadband internet has been feeling sluggish. A call to the company took way more hold-time than I wanted to spend, and it only fixed the problem for a short while. Thus a perfect opportunity to play with some new tech to solve a problem, in this case, documenting a systemic issue from a service provider. The goal – a log a internet speeds, taken say every 15 min. Recording ping time, upload speed, download speed, and local LAN usage.   The solution A WCF service to measure speeds Internet speed was measured via speedtest.net LAN usage was measured by querying my router for packets received and sent A SQL express instance to persist the data A PowerShell script to invoke the WCF service – launched by Windows’ Task Scheduler An OData WCF Data Service to allow me to read the data MS PowerPivot to show a nice viz (scratch that, the beta expired) LinqPad to get the data, export it to excel Tableau Public to show the viz     Powered by Tableau

• PHP Development Environment (Host: Windows 7, Guest: Ubuntu)

  Since editing files live from a remote server slows down development. I use XAMPP on windows to develop then run the web app's on a Linux server. However to avoid environment dependencies I'd like to mirror the live environment and the development environments. What I'm asking is running development server on Ubuntu inside VirtualBox whilst editing the source files via ftp/Dreamweaver is a good idea? If so, and I wanted to view the local website on the host OS (windows) how would I do this? does the guest OS have a LAN/Local IP address? I notice on windows "ipconfig /all" there are "tunneling" adapters which I assume is for VirtualBox, so I guess the guest OS has the same LAN/Local IP address? if so how would I view the websites hosted on the guest OS on the host OS? I'd also need to host FTP server on guest OS. Note: I need windows! I would love to use Linux all the way -.-

  I'm a new user to Ubuntu and Linux as a whole, I've had it for a few months and just as I'm starting to get a feel for things my wireless decided to quit on me. This puzzled me so i checked all the switches on the Vaio; my wireless switch was on (my bluetooth was also working), and in my windows partition the problem is non-existent. Help please?   My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets. Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a hardware switch.   Hey, I need to install the wifi driver to ubuntu. so I downloaded the driver from hp website but the extension is .rpm, so I need to convert him to .deb so I can install it on ubuntu. • Switching between ethernet interfaces on Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER

  I have ubuntu 10.04 "SERVER" installed on a system with two ehternet ports. I use only one at a time. I wanted to know if I can switch between ports without using ifup and ifdown every time. That means when I connect my Lan cable on eth0 it should work and it does. But when I disconnect the lan cable and connect it on eth1 I have to ifdown eth0 and only then it works. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have configured both eth0 and eth1. there is no problem other than I have to switch it manually with ifdown and ifup everytime. Please guide. Thanks in advance

My driver is installed and activated, I have tried removing and re-adding the network, and various other fixes. • Bluetooth not really "turning on" on a Sony Vaio VPCEG

  On a Sony Vaio VPCEG, bluetooth is not working properly: The gnome-shell bluetooth indicator (at the main bar) shows the bluetooth is on, but when I try to switch visibility on it simply doesn't turn on. When I open the bluetooth configuration dialog, the on/off indicator shows me the bluetooth is off. And when I try to turn it on it simply does not turn on. This is my current layout: public.ip > Cisco firewall > lan.ip > OpenVPN server lan.ip = 192.168.22.70 The Cisco firewall forwards the requests to the oVPN server, thus so far everything works and clients are able to connect. However, all clients connected should be able to access 3 networks: lan1: 192.168.200.0 (vpn lan) > tun0 lan2: 192.168.110.0 (office lan) > eth1 (gw 192.168.22.1) lan3: 192.168.22.0 (server lan) > eth1 (broadcast network) So tun0 is mapped to eth1.   First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. 1. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 2. Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit 3. Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 4. My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now?   I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my DELL Latitude E6230, on first boot wifi worked properly but when I updated the software it stopped working. I can't figure out the problem... In the "Network" setting window, I only see "Wired" and "Network proxy". Wireless has just disappeared: rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no and that's it! Nothing about the wireless controller... Any suggestions?

  I want to setup two ip addresses on my system for access through lan. This is my config on my other system. Desktop Installation My desktop installation runs with multiple IP's added through networkmanager both through lan and wifi. I Recently came across a situation where I needed to install Ubuntu Minimal on a system which wash not having a LAN card and cable internet anywhere around... The only access to the internet was through a USB Plug n Play Data-Card Modem. May anyone suggest something so that I may install Ubuntu Minimal using USB Modem as the only source of Internet, if it's possible at all?? (This relates to Ubuntu 12.04 in specific)

  I just upgraded to 12.10 on my Lenovo B570 laptop. NetworkManager isn't displaying a submenu for wireless connections at all, even though I downloaded the update through the wireless connection. This displeases me.   I'm not able to enable Wireless using the hardware switch on my HP ProBook4430s. Because of this the Enable Wireless option is greyd out and I cannot enable it. The greyd out option can be seen in the screenshot below. The results of iwconfig for my system are as follows, lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off eth0 no wireless extensions. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? • Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

• Configuring default gateway returned by dhcp server

  Hello, I have a machine which connects via ethernet to a private LAN, and wireless to a network which provides internet connectivity. The private LAN uses a wireless router to perform DHCP. The problem is that the wireless and NIC adapters have different default gateways. The default gateway for the private LAN has a lower adapter metric, and is thus chosen by the routing algorithm. I am thus unable to browse the internet when connected to both adapters. The following link has a solution for manually setting the adapter metric to a high number. http://superuser.com/questions/77822/how-to-tell-windows-7-to-ignore-a-default-gateway I was hoping to find a different solution. Does any one know of a router that allows you to configure its DHCP server to return an empty default gateway? I cannot find such an option for my linksys wrt300n. Configuring a static ip address with no default gateway does work, however I would like to use DHCP if possible. Does anyone know of a different way to specify a default gateway for a windows 7 machine with multiple network adapters without mucking with the adapter metric? Thanks, Matthew
