  • Implementing "View as HTML" for Word and PDF documents on an intranet

    I am looking for a way to implement "View as HTML" (as seen in e.g. GMail) for Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF documents stored in an intranet. Can anyone recommend approaches for this? The intranet consists of multiple .NET sites, so I would prefer a .NET library (one that doesn't launch MS Word on the server) for this capability, but any kind of arrangement is welcome.

  • Word 2010 header "different first page" option does not work if you select the same built-in header preset?

    I have a three page Word 2010 document. I have set a header on the first page and marked the "different first page" option to make the follow page headers different. It works as expected so long as I don't select the same built-in header preset for the following pages. Here's what I am doing: Check mark different first page. Make the header for the first page using Alphabet preset. Attempt to make the header for the following pages by starting with the same Alphabet preset. I only want to change the text of the following headers but still want the same graphical effects. Click off the header into the body of the document. Upon doing this the headers on the first page are updated to the ones I just made for the following pages. I don't I am doing something wrong because I can choose a different header preset and it will work as expected. If I select the same preset, however, it updates all headers, whether the "different on first page" is selected or not. If this is repeatable on others' computers the I would say it's a word bug. If not then please help me figure out how to get this working right.

  • Edit the Windows Live Writer Custom Dictionary

    Windows Live Writer is a great tool for writing and publishing posts to your blog, but its spell check unfortunately doesn’t include many common tech words.  Here’s how you can easily edit your custom dictionary and add your favorite words. Customize Live Writer’s Dictionary Adding an individual word to the Windows Live Writer dictionary works as you would expect.  Right-click on a word and select Add to dictionary. And changing the default spell check settings is easy too.  In the menu, click Tools, then Options, and select the Spelling tab in this dialog.  Here you can choose your dictionary language and turn on/off real-time spell checking and other settings. But there’s no obvious way to edit your custom dictionary.  Editing the custom dictionary directly is nice if you accidently add a misspelled word to your dictionary and want to remove it, or if you want to add a lot of words to the dictionary at once. Live Writer actually stores your custom dictionary entries in a plain text file located in your appdata folder.  It is saved as User.dic in the C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries folder.  The easiest way to open the custom dictionary is to enter the following in the Run box or the address bar of an Explorer window: %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries\User.dic   This will open the User.dic file in your default text editor.  Add any new words to the custom dictionary on separate lines, and delete any misspelled words you accidently added to the dictionary.   Microsoft Office Word also stores its custom dictionary in a plain text file.  If you already have lots of custom words in it and want to import them into Live Writer, enter the following in the Run command or Explorer’s address bar to open Word’s custom dictionary.  Then copy the words, and past them into your Live Writer custom dictionary file. %AppData%\Microsoft\UProof\Custom.dic Don’t forget to save the changes when you’re done.  Note that the changes to the dictionary may not show up in Live Writer’s spell check until you restart the program.  If it’s currently running, save any posts you’re working on, exit, and then reopen, and all of your new words should be in the dictionary. Conclusion Whether you use Live Writer daily in your job or occasionally post an update to a personal blog, adding your own custom words to the dictionary can save you a lot of time and frustration in editing.  Plus, if you’ve accidently added a misspelled word to the dictionary, this is a great way to undo your mistake and make sure your spelling is up to par!   • Replace text in word textbox objects using VSTO and C#

    Hi, I have to find/replace text from a word document. It works fine for plain text spread through the document, however when the text is in a textbox, the standard find/replace approach doesn't reach it. I found a vba solution, however since I am working in C#, I would like to find a solution in C#. The word document is in 2007 format and my visual studio is 2010. I am using .Net Framework 3.5, but if required, I can consider moving to 4.0.   • Word 97 installed with Outlook XP - Cannot use Word for default editor from Windows Explorer.

    I am using Outlook 2002 (Office XP Update) with Word 97 and Excel 97. (The reason is that Microsoft refused to activate my legit copy of office 2003 when I got a new motherboard, Word XP crashed too much, and I prefer the newer Outlook. I would rather not send Microsoft more money to upgrade since they refuse to activate what I've already purchased. Please don't recommend an upgrade.) Now, I can tell Windows Explorer to use Word 97 to open, for example, a .txt file. But whenever I try to open the text file from Explorer, it either (a) started the Windows XP installer, or (b) tells me that the .txt file is an invalid Win32 application. Is there some way to straighten out the registry without reinstalling Windows XP? Excel 97 and Outlook 2002 are working fine.

I know I can use the Section Break routine, but the problem is the table needs to go into a company frame (which I cannot turn onto a landscape), so I literally need to turn the table by 90 degrees.   • How do I find and replace 'whole words only', in Microsoft Word?

    I want to be able to find and replace eat with Eat in Microsoft Word 2007. However, I don’t want to replace every occurrence of eat such as those that can be found inside other words such as great and meat. I have tried doing this using the regular Find and Replace tool, but I get words with capital letters in the middle. Is there a way I can just replace eat with Eat if it only exists on its own?
