  • What is a good way of checking to see if a particular user may access a particular file?

    I am working on application which runs as a special unprivileged user. I would like to be able to easily check to see if the user can read a given file. It seems like this should be easy, even when I go into the file in Windows Explorer and see that the read permission is checked, it sometimes seems that there is still something preventing the user from reading the file (such as a parent directory that the user cannot browse) when I try to read it as the user programmatically. The user has no console logon permission, so I can't just log in as the user and try to read the file. So... If I want to know, "Does UserBob have access to file c:\specialPath\specialFile, what is an easy way to find out? BTW, my environment is Windows Server 2003.

  • Issue resolving names on Hyper-V guest with Routing and Remote Access

    I've got a Win2k8 standard server running Hyper-V with a Server 2003 web guest instance running. The host is publicly available on the internet. I've created an Internal Private network in the Hyper-V Virtual Network manager. I've set the host IP for that virtual adapter to 192.168.0.1. I've set the IP on the guest to 192.168.0.2. They can ping each other and share files. I can't browse the web on the guest though. NSLOOKUPs are working. I've tried setting the DNS server setting on the guest to 192.168.0.1 and something external like Google's 8.8.8.8 server to no avail. Windows firewall is disabled on the internal virtual network. I've tried it with both DNS installed on the host and without it. I'm not sure which RRAS/NAT settings are relevant to pass on so ask if you need me to clarify anything. How do I get outbound internet working on the guest VM?

  • Allowing XP Home Clients To Access Active Directory Printers

    My school's network is based on Active Directory on Windows Server 2003 servers. Most of the computers in the school are members of the domain. However, we also acquired a passel of netbooks that are running Windows XP Home (as netbooks tend to), and we're trying to make those useful. The netbooks are made available to students by check-out, so none of them are dedicated to a specific user. I only want to allow the netbooks to do two significant network activities: to access the Internet (this is working acceptably well so far), and to print to one or more printers on the network. That second one is where trouble starts. I'm trying to find a way to allow the XP Home clients to access those Active Directory printers. All the solutions that I can come up with right now are expensive, ugly, or both - for example, changing the OS on the netbooks (even with imaging, that would take a lot of my time) or making sure that the user account on each netbook has a matching account in Active Directory with permissions for printing (invites security/maintainability disaster). Are there any elegant solutions? Failing that, what's the best ugly solution for allowing my students to print from the netbooks?

  • Windows user cannot connect via application, but can via Remote Desktop

    I have an application (ASG-Zena) giving an 1385 error (Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer) when trying to run a batch job. I have checked on "Access this computer from the network" includes Everyone and Administrators and many others. "Deny access to this computer from the network" make sure that Guest is not listed there. If you still have problems, then maybe make sure that nothing is listed there. Administrative tools...local security policy..security options "Network access sharing and security model for local accounts" there are 2 options either classic or 'guest only'. Mine is set to classic. (These diagnostics come from this post) The account in question is added to the Administrator group on this computer. I know the login is valid because I regularly login to the server via remote Desktop. What other settings should I check?

  • WinForms - DateTimePicker default month selection behavior for Server 2003 vs Server 2008?

    Good Afternoon! Has anybody else noticed a change in the default behavior of the "next" and "previous" month arrows in the standard WinForms DateTimePicker control? I have users running on both Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and they are reporting that on 2008 (and Vista/Win7), clicking the right or left arrows on the drop-down Calendar now selects the first day of the month rather than retaining the same day like 2003 (and XP) does. I have checked this out (I have a Win7 machine) and I have confirmed this behavior. I would prefer that the behavior remain consistent whenever possible. Does anybody know what causes this and if there is a way to get around this? Is there a way to trap the arrow-click event and force the resulting date to retain the original day rather than be reset to the first of the month? I thought about seeing if there was a way to hit-test the control on a MouseUp event and determine if the arrow buttons were clicked, and then override the month value being set, but I'm not sure if that is even possible. Can anybody provide some wisdom or insight? Thanks!

  • libreoffice on Mint14 problem : save as 2003 doc

    When saving a doc file (MS office 2003) as a doc file, libreoffice crashes and the file without any updates goes into recovery mode ... I installed mint14 from scratch and did not modify anything the odd thing with mint13 and libreoffice, there is no problem (save as works fine) with an upgraded mint14, there is no problem (save as works fine) this happed on acer one d522 machine and a no-name PC (amd based) both are running a 64 bit version of mint (virgin install) the other machines : - acer X1370 upgraded mint14 and - a dell 1520 (mint13 out of the box) do not show this proble please help... something I forgot or a bug?     I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log.   • Unicenter Software Delivery 4 not able to connect to MS SQL 2000 Database after W2003 SP2 upgrade

    Hello Everyone Yesterday I installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on a Windows Server 2003 which has Unicenter Software Delivery 4 installed. Prior to the installation I disabled every CA service on the server (Brightstor, SDO , RCO, TNG) and the MS SQL 2000 service. After the installation of the SP2 I enabled the services again but the Unicenter Service is not able to connect to the MS SQL 2000 Database anymore. The database itself is up and running and I can connect to it with the Enterprise Manager. A dbcc checkdb doesnt return any errors on the Unicenter database.     Have a SBS2003 client with a mess of a domain that is in process of being cleaned. But, for the life of me I cannot find a setting that will allow write access to the local hard disk for domain users with redirected profiles(to the server). This is needed only for one program that will not follow a symbolic link to the network path, instead it seems to be hard coded to the %appdata% folder but only on the c: drive.... So question is how can I allow "Domain users" write access to the local %appdata% directory? I have tried setting it manually on a machine but it kept resetting to RO no matter how many times I tried. Everytime I would uncheck the RO property it would reset sometime right after i hit OK. Thanks in advance! Dan

  • How can I make Access combo boxes unfurl on arrow key down?

    With combo box controls, I'm used to being able tab to them, click the down arrow key to open up the options, and then use the up and down arrow keys to navigate those options. In an Access form I've designed, pressing down while a combo box is active moves to the next control. I already have tab for that, so how can I get the down arrow to behave as I expect? These combo boxes are the only thing between me and a mouse-free form, which I consider essential for data entry. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Can't access SQL Server 2008 from workstations, but can from server

    We have an app that can use mssql2k or 2k8. We've been using 2k but I decided to try 2k8 to compare. I installed in on our win2k3 server alongside mssql2k. In the ODBC applet on the server, I was able to set up access to 2k8, and it passes the test at the end successfully, whether I tell it to use Windows Authentication or an sql login. The latter is how the app always accessed mssql2k. The app works fine from the server, but when I try it on a workstation (winxpsp3), I get a window titled, "Microsoft SQL Server Login" that says: Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 53 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server ERror: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Then I get the ODBC login dialog, which I can't get to login correctly (I just keep getting the same error above), even copying and pasting a password after resetting it on the server, and whether "trusted" is checked or not. "Options" is disabled. The server was straight SERVERNAME for mssql2k, but for mssql2k8 it's called SERVERNAME\mssql2008. That works on the server, why not on the workstation? (Which I'm logged in as the same person on, BTW.)

    We have multiple sites in IIS with different IP addresses. This is cool, want different IPs to all go to this server and use the proper site. However I discovered an issue that when the server makes an outgoing connection, I cannot predict which IP it will use. I had to have one client add ALL the IPs to their firewall so that a certain service could communicate with their server. Well now the time has come to add another IP/site to IIS but I had told them they would not need to add any more IPs. So the question is, how can I make Windows Server 2003 use only ONE specific IP for outgoing calls instead of it being unpredictable? If this is not a good enough description, when I was RDPed into the server and I opened IE and went to 'what is my IP' it was sometimes different which is how I discovered why the one client's firewall was suddenly refusing the connections. How can I just make outgoing calls originate from a static IP yet still allow multiple IPs pointing to different sites in IIS?

  • Mailbox move issue from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

    Today while moving mailboxes between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010, I hit an issue with a couple of mailboxes.  These mailboxes all popped access denied errors or more exactly: Insufficient Access Rights to perform the operation.   The cause was similar to the mail flow issue in that inheritable permissions were not turned on for the user object in Active Directory.  This also presented it’s own unique problem in that since the initial move request failed because of permissions, it had to be cleared before a new move request could be created. On top of that, the request did not show up in the EMC.  I used the following process to clear the request, assign permission, then create a new request:   1. First you need to know the ExchangeGUID of the mailbox for the remove-moverequest command.  To quickly get the GUID for a mailbox simply run:         2. Next we need to clear out the move request using PowerShell by running: [PS] c:\>Remove-moverequest -moverequestqueue "mailbox database 1030639620" -mailboxguid 8525686f-d4d3-42b7-92f1-46d77ea841a3   3. Then to re-establish inheritable permissions. This can be done by using AD Users and Computers, switching to View Advanced Features, then under the Security tab of the object.  Click Advanced, then check “allow inheritable permissions of parent to propagate to this object”   4. Once the Inheritable permissions are restored, we need to create a new move request: NOTE:  The EMC can also be used to initiate the Move Request once the permissions are corrected. [PS] c:\>New-moverequest –identity jyoung  -baditemlimit 100 -targetdatabase "mailbox database 1030639620"   And that’s it.  The mailbox should move over smoothly with no access denied error.

  • MS Access: Why is ADODB.Recordset.BatchUpdate so much slower than Application.ImportXML?

    I'm trying to run the code below to insert a whole lot of records (from a file with a weird file format) into my Access 2003 database from VBA. After many, many experiments, this code is the fastest I've been able to come up with: it does 10000 records in about 15 seconds on my machine. At least 14.5 of those seconds (ie. almost all the time) is in the single call to UpdateBatch. I've read elsewhere that the JET engine doesn't support UpdateBatch. So maybe there's a better way to do it. Now, I would just think the JET engine is plain slow, but that can't be it. After generating the 'testy' table with the code below, I right clicked it, picked Export, and saved it as XML. Then I right clicked, picked Import, and reloaded the XML. Total time to import the XML file? Less than one second, ie. at least 15x faster. Surely there's an efficient way to insert data into Access that doesn't require writing a temp file? Consider that i have an excel workbook and an access table not necessarily having a similar structure (i.e. They may not have same number of columns) When i open the workbook the rows in the excel sheet get populated by the rows in access table (copied from the access table into the excel sheet's particular range of cells specified using macros). Then i modify certain cells in the excel sheet. I also have a button called "Save" in the excel sheet. When pressed, this will execute a macro. My question how can i update the access table to reflect the changes in the excel sheet when the save button is clicked...? Thanks for your time and suggestions...!

  • Server 2008 print server down / access denied

    I have two Server 2008 servers (both running as VMs in VMware). One is a Full Installation, and the other is a Server Core installation. I just installed Print Services on both of them. In Print Management on the Full server, I added the Server Core print server (so now two print servers are listed in Print Management). However, the icon for my Server Core print server has a red, down-pointing arrow (indicating that it is down, I suppose). And when I right-click it and click Add Printer, I get a message saying that access is denied. Can someone tell me how to bring up or check on the status of the Server Core print server. Obviously, I'm somewhat of a noob with this stuff. Thanks in advance...

  • Comma comes up instead of single quote with single quote key in MS-Word 2007

    I have a peculiar problem in Microsoft Office 2007 (Word). When I am using single quotes, the first time I type a ' it appears as a , instead. For example, typing ''' translates to ,'' in Word, necessitating me to go back and delete the comma so that I can correctly single-quote words. Is there a solution to this? Also, the dictionary was set to German when I first started using the application, but I set it to US English after that.
