  I'm using windows 7, Now I need to install Ubuntu 11.04 to the my lap top, I want keep win7 in my lap, I'm planing to keep dual boot system on my lap, I want to install Ubuntu on separate partition, I have deleted my windows empty partition to allocate the space to Ubuntu but when I'm proceeding with installation in Ubuntu, I couldn't recognize the empty partition, Ubuntu shows my full hard disk space one 50GB partition to install, I couldn't recognize the 50GB partition, can anyone tell me how to install Ubuntu on my lap. I really appreciate it, I want to install Ubuntu without loosing my existing data, to do that I have allocated empty unlocated disk space. Thank you in advance!

• Which repo and version of Percona for Natty?

  I'm wanting to drop in Percona instead of MySQL (5.1) on my Natty ubuntu server. I've added the keys and the repos. I've added a natty repo, even though it's not supposed to exist and it seems to be fine. The problem is when I go an apt-get install percona-server-server, it tells me that it depends on percona-server-server-5.5 and won't be installed. Should I just install 5.5 (over the top of mysql 5.1) or do I need to install percona 5.1? Or do I need to pick a different repo and let it decide?

• Update in grub.cfg file for loading new kernel image in Ubuntu 11.04

  I am new to Linux. I am compiling Linux kernel (ver: 2.6.34.12) in gcc in traditional manner in VMware machine in Ubuntu (kernel version - 2.6.38-8-generic) 11.04 version. I am unable to find, where to update about newly compiled kernel in the grub.cfg file. I updated the newly created image version name in the existing image. Then VMware didn't able to load new kernel. I have searched in internet but I didn't find. So anyone can help me, to update in the grub.cfg and to successfully load new kernel. Few things about what I have done: Make bzImage to create image file. Make modules_install && make install to install modules and then sudo mkinitramfs -o initramfs.img-2.6.34 2.6.34. Then sudo gedit grub.cfg. In that at the mementry I updated the version of vmlinuz and initrd from 2.6.38-8 to 2.6.34.12. This is I have done.

• Ubuntu 11.04: No Audio Output

  I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 earlier this week and I'm having trouble getting my audio online. It was working fine in 10.04 and all the resources I can find on troubleshooting seem to be fairly dated so I'm not sure if they apply. CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio] Analog Stereo Duplex Playing a WMA file shows 0.00db output when I mouse over the sound controller in the status bar. Obviously, no output from my speakers. I tried adjusting the profile, thinking I might have the wrong one. That seems to have made things worse. Where mouse over originally said something along the lines of "Oxygen HD Audio," it now reads "Dummy Output." Selecting "Test Speakers" in sound preferences crashes the dialog. Any pointers would be great.

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. I'm in the middle of work on a website and I have a deadline, so I need some help over here. Thanks. p.s. I tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager. Didn't work. And I'm not on a laptop.

• VPS Memory Exchausted Even With Light Settings

  Linux noob here. I have a 256MB VPS on Ubuntu 11.04 server and when I run "free -m" the result shows all memory being used (including the second line re: buffers/cache). I found this very strange, considering I only have 5 Apache processes running each chewing up about 20MB each. MYSQL is taking up 30MB. To my knowledge, and according to "top", I have no other memory hogs operating. Settings that may be relevant: PHP memory_limit = 32M MYSQL key_buffer = 16M Prefork MPM Maxclients = 10 So when I reviewed these settings, I naturally thought maxclients was too high, so I tried switching it to 5. Now not only does my memory still show as being 100% used, my website loads much, much slower, despite not getting any traffic aside from mine at the moment. I don't understand this. I thought a single Apache process handles all requests from a client received within the "KeepAliveTimeout" window, which I've set to 2 seconds. With my initial config. of 10 maxclients, my page load times are around .3ms, so a single process should handle that no problem, correct? So next I went to an extreme level of 1 for maxclients. My memory is still at 100% usage and my site loads painfully slow. I'm a noob at a complete loss here. According to the many tutorials I've read on basic server setup, I should be good to go. Help!   I'm trying to set up an Web Server running Ubuntu server to host some Java web applications, with MySQL running on it, an so on .. here is the tutorial I follow: perfect server ubuntu 11.10 The server configuration is: CPU S1155 INTEL Pentium G850 2.9GHz VGA 5GTs 3MB 65W MB Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Ram 4x4Gb HDD 5x1TB Seagate (4 in RAID5 and 1 for Backup) The problem is that when I am trying to install the Server version of Ubuntu, when the installer asks me whether to activate ATA RAID Devices, and I click yes, he sees only that one, if I click no, he sees all 5 HDD's separate without any RAID, is this normal? I also tried to install the Desktop version on RAID5, but after restart, Ubuntu does't want to boot up, an underscore stands on the top of the screen. I am a newbie in servers and their configuration, in fact I am developer. I need a help from you guys.

• I shrunk the Windows partition, now it says grub rescue on boot

  I have got a machine with dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and I wanted to add another OS to that (Jolicloud), so I started the partition manager in Windows and shrunk the Windows partition by about 10 GB (so now I have:Windows;currently empty 10GB;Ubuntu). I shutted down the computer because I was finished. Now when I started my machine again it says error:no such partition. grub rescue> and I can type commands. ls gives (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0) if that helps

  I'd like to be able to stream .avi files to my xbox 360 video library. I've gone through a bunch of different servers (ushare, xbmc) both from the aptitude and from source. It seems that I can get the servers working from both localhost and from another computer on the network. However, the xbox cannot detect any of these. Can anybody give me a hand or perhaps post a detailed walkthrough to give me a hand?

• Need to automount dvd or cdrom at fixed mount point in Ubuntu 11.04

  Ubuntu 11.04, by default, automounts a cdrom or dvd at /media/<vol_name>. I need to make the automounting system use a fixed name instead of the volume name for all CDs or DVDs inserted into this particular drive, e.g. "/media/op-drive0". A bit of searching turns up pretty much the same solution I used, successfully, on an older, gentoo box, which is to create an fdi file for hal, along the lines of the instructions at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=91450. This doesn't seem to work on this box. Other sources say to use the gnome-mount utility to set the mounting properties. Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't know about the gnome-mount program. Any ideas?

• Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

• Ubuntu 11.04 fresh install - "Input signal out of range" or "Mode not supported..."

  I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 using a CD .iso. Installation went fine. Upon completion I rebooted and after a second or two I got a black screen with the message "Input signal out of range". And there it sits... Read a few things about how this could be related to screen resolution, refresh rate, etc. For the heck of it I tried a different monitor. The result is the same but the message provides some clues - "Mode not supported - H:92.7kHz, V:58.3Hz" (the latter is Hz; not kHz). So my thought is that I should probably be able to use the 11.04 install disc to "Try out Ubuntu", find and edit some file that was created by the install with the correct values. Problem is, I am not too sure what I am supposed to edit. Looked at the xorg.conf file but this is so minimal at this point I am not sure it is where I want to go. By the way, the monitor is an I-Inc ix191a. Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this?

  I want to replace postfix with exim4 on my Ubuntu test server to reflect the setup I have on my production server, but apt-get and aptitude (quite understandably) insist on removing several packages that depend upon having a mail stack. However, in this case I am prepared to override apt-get's undoubted good sense as exim should fulfil all the requirements of the dependent packages, providing mail and sendmail functionality for my applications. I don't want to remove the dependent packages as there is months of effort invested and, although backed up, will be a pain to reconstruct properly.

• How to set the laptop screen brightness programatically?

  I'm currently migrating to openbox without gnome session. In unity i can use the vendor keys to set the screen brightness, but in openbox I'm on my own. /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness works fine, the problem is that I need sudo to set the brightness and that wouldn't work with keyboard mappings. xbacklight -get/set doesn't do or output anything. I don't really want to use xrandr --brightness. Are there any other options or a way to fix the problems with xbacklight or acpi_video0 ?

  Adapting some code from a linux forum, I've added a service script to /etc/init.d on my ubuntu natty server to start/stop/restart node.js It literally was working the first day I made it, but then today, after viewing my website this morning, the server threw a 404, and upon further inspection, the node.js process was gone. So I went to start the service again, only this time, node.js didn't start at all, and ever since I haven't been able to get my service script working. • No Cure for a Slow Computer?

  I have a laptop with the following specs: 2.2gHz dual-core processor. 4gb of DDR2 Ram. 180gb HDD space. I have tried everything. I have reinstalled the OS. Installed Ubuntu with Lubuntu, LXDE, Gnome Classic, Unity 2D desktop. I have even tried downgrading to XP with all non-critical processes and services turned off. Even with the most stripped down version of Ubuntu it heats up and the fan starts churning. I'm out of ideas. I have tried everything. If you have any tips, please help. :'(

  For two months I've been running Ubuntu 11.10 64bits in VirtualBox 4.1.12r77245 but today everything has been really slow, freezing all the time. I've had to restart the VM about 7 times already because Ubuntu just freezed in the middle of a task. I'm using my laptop, it's a LG P420 i5 with 4gb ram.   Somebody was using my Windows 7 and she hibernated it instead of shutting down. Later, I booted up Ubuntu and moved about 2GB worth of files from the Ubuntu partition to the Windows partition. After booting up Windows (from hibernation), I couldn't find any of the files. Then I restarted the PC, and the files showed for a second or two and then disappeared. Did Windows delete all the files I put on it while it was hibernating?

How does the os know which paramater to pass to a script? To start apache I would do sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start. If I run sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 it doesn't work without the start. How does the os pass start to the script?

• Why does the terminal in unity 2d (Ubuntu 11.10) always stay in the foreground?

  I have just updated to Ubuntu 11.10 and I am using unity 2d. My terminal applications (gnome-terminal or konsole) just won't go into background. When I move another application in front of them, they are still rendered, but the clicks are going through them. This behavior only appears when the terminal windows interact with another applications. I can move one terminal over another without a problem, but even the menu list of a terminal application can not be shown, since it is - for some unknown reason - "behind" the terminal. Any ideas what might be the cause of this problem? I do not have this problem with my other machines. The only difference is, that I am using unity 2d here and ("normal") unity at home.
